Reflection on the Feast of the Holy Family The Feast of the Holy Family is not just about the Holy Family, but about our own families too. The main purpose of the Feast is to present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families, and for domestic life in general. Our family life becomes sanctified when we live the life of the Church within our homes. This is called the "domestic church" or the "church in miniature." St. John Chrysostom urged all Christians to make each home a "family church," and in doing so, we sanctify the family unit. The best way to do this is by making Christ the center of family and individual life. Ways to do this include: reading scripture regularly, praying daily, attending Mass at least on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, imitat-ing the actions of the Holy Family, going to confession fre-quently, and so forth, all done together as a family unit. In addition to cultivating positive actions, the Church teaches that various actions and behaviors are contrary to God's divine plan for the family. These include abortion, contracep-tion, embryonic stem-cell research, divorce, spousal abuse, child abuse, among other things. Catholic teaching is that a marriage must be open to children. Anything artificial that pre-vents this is contrary to divine law, although spacing births for a just reason is permitted and may be accomplished through "natural family planning.” Today reflect on the value and sanctity of the family unit, and evaluate your own family life. What ways may it be improved? What would Jesus, Mary, and Joseph do?

Thank you to all who made our celebration of Christmas this year special for all of us.

Those who decorated and spent extra time on the music really contributed a lot for our Christmas experience this year. I am also grateful for the people who volunteered for various minis-tries at Mass. Thanks for all you do for our parish year round. The Deacon’s and I want to thank all who remembered us at Christmas. Your kindness, gifts and cards of appreciation were appreciated by all three of us. We are happy to serve you. You will received as you leave Mass this weekend a book “Joy to the World” by Scott Hahn. It is a Christmas/New Years gift from the parish. Take time to read the book, maybe just a few pages a day. It gives you insight into the birth of Jesus. Let us pray for each other this week.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK will kick off with 4:30pm Mass on Sat., Jan. 27 followed by a chili dinner for school chil-dren and their families. During Catholic Schools Week, we are looking for adults who have a particular skill, trade, or profes-sion who would be willing to come on the afternoon of January 29 from approximately 2-3pm to work with a group of about 10 students on an activity that they could plan out that would intro-duce the students to that skill, trade, or profession.
