How to Get Involved in Our Parish
We are a very small community here at St. Barnabas and participation from our parish members is vital for growth, sustainability, managing events for faith formation, keeping our current organizations thriving, and
running and organizing all the aspects of fun events like St. Barnabas Day and the Fall Festival!
WE NEED EACH OF ONE OF YOU!!
Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance toward areas that work well for you and then take that leap of faith and volun-teer or join an organization-you may just find yourself becoming more satisfied in the parish and making some
life-long friends in the process! This is your parish!
We are all recipients of different gifts. Take a look at your special God-given abilities and consider how your talents could help our parish grow in numbers; but, more importantly spiritually.
Good at public speaking? -Volunteer as a Lector or run a 6-week Bible Study or Faith Formation Program.
Relate well with teens? We need a few faith-filled young adults to run a Youth Program!
Like to meet new people? Our Parish needs a few volunteers for a Welcoming Committee.
Great smile? Volunteer to be a greeter before Holy Mass! Get to know people by name!
Ideas person? Run for the Parish Council-Serve on the Fall Festival Committee!
Have a compassionate heart?-Volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Organization helping less fortunate
people in the surrounding community!
Like Being Part of a Group of Like-Minded People-Make Friends at the Parish and Do Good at the Same Time? Join our Ladies Guild, Our Holy Name Society, Our Pro-Life Committee, Our Quilters, the
Ranger Rosaries Group!
Some Available Time? Do you have time to attend Holy Mass during the week? Please come and pray, spend some time with Our Lord in quiet adoration and pray for Father Hager and the St. Barnabas Parish.
THE AMAZING PARISH PRAYER
Heavenly Father, we thank You for gathering us together and calling us to serve as Your disciples.
You have charged us through Your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing
Your love to the world.
Send Your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern Your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish.
Give us strength and courage and the clear vision as we use our gifts to serve You.
We entrust our St. Barnabas Parish family to the care of Mary, our mother, and ask for her intercession and
guidance as we strive to bear witness to the Gospel and build an amazing parish.
Amen
The Fall Festival is in desperate need of someone to be the

· St. Barnabas’ birth name was Joseph. He was nicknamed Barnabas meaning “Son of Encouragement” (Acts 4:36). This nick-name was probably given to him because of his inclination to serve others (Acts 4:36-37, 9:27) and his willingness to do whatever the Church leaders needed (Acts 11:25-31)
· St. Barnabas was a Levite and a Cyprian (that is, a native of the island of Cyprus).
· St. Barnabas put the kingdom first before his possessions. His first recorded action is that he “sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet” (Acts
4:37). St. Barnabas was also acknowledged by St. Paul for supporting himself financially in his ministry instead of depending on churches (1 Corinthians 9:6).
· After St. Paul’s dramatic conversion, St. Barnabas courageously vouched for him when the Jerusalem church was suspicious that a former persecutor would want to join their ranks (Acts 9:26-31).
· St. Barnabas was a Christian leader and preacher (Acts 15:35). On one occasion, he was sent by the Jerusalem church to Antioch. Acts 11:23-24 describes his arrival, “When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.” After his arrival, Barnabas sought out Saul to help him with the work (Acts 11:25).
· As the early church began to grow in spite of Herod’s persecution, St. Barnabas and St. Paul received the call from the Holy Spirit to go on their first missionary journey (Acts 13:1-3).
· St. Barnabas, along with St. Paul, served to straighten out Jew/Gentile tensions that arose in the early church by sharing from the Scriptures and his experience how the Gentiles were being saved and could fellowship with Jews (Acts 15:1-21; Galatians 2:1-10). Although this issue was not without its challenges for St. Barnabas. In Galatians 2:13, Paul called Barnabas out for being led astray by Jewish circumcision party hypocrisy for a time (presumably before the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15).
· St. Barnabas had a sharp disagreement with St. Paul that ended their ministry together. Acts 15:36-41 ex-plains that Barnabas wanted to take Mark along on their missionary journey while Paul did not because Mark had abandoned them on a previous trip. Paul would eventually describe Mark as “useful to me” at the end of his life (2 Timothy 4:11). It makes sense that Barnabas would stick up for Mark–they were cousins (Colossians 4:10).
· There was wide speculation about St. Barnabas in early church history. “In the third century Barnabas was identified by Clement of Alexandria as one of the 70 of Luke 10:1; Tertullian referred to him as the author of Hebrews; and the Clementine Recognitions stated he was the Matthias of Acts 1:23, 26. In the second century an epistle bearing Barnabas’s name appeared, became quite popular, and even received some consideration for a place in the NT. Later an apocryphal Acts of Barnabas and perhaps even a Gospel of Barnabas were circulated.”
Grant, O God, that we may follow the example of thy faithful Servant Barnabas, who, seeking not his own re-nown but the well-being of thy Church, gave generously of his life and substance for the relief of the poor and
the spread of the Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
