After last week’s amazing high ofbirthday cake indulgence, I’lladmit that I’ve been slowly

falling back to earth from that overdoseof carbs and sugar. That’s why I’m in des-perate need of a cleanse — meaning, Ineed to partake in meals that are abun-dant in fresh vegetables and fish withlots of nutrients and omega-3 fatty acids.With that in mind, I decided to treat

South China Sea. With a populationof seven million people and grow-ing, it’s safe to say that Hong Kongis one of the most densely populat-ed areas in the world, renownedfor its amazing skyline, deep natu-ral harbor, and impeccable cuisinethat features an exotic blend ofEast meets West.

Ken and Cindy Wong, owners ofAnytime Cafe in Market CityShopping Center, long ago recog-nized the culinary benefits of thisformer British colony and immedi-ately decided to bring the HongKong-style cafe concept to theislands. Originally from Hong Kongand having opened the doors totheir establishment in February2010, the Wongs have extensiveknowledge and experience in therestaurant business.

“Seven years ago I ownedHong Kong Orchid Cafe, whichwas known for its more tradi-tional Hong Kong-style cuisineand we brought the traditionalstyle Won Ton Min here,” saysKen, who also previously ownedthe Banana Leaf Italian Bistro.

Dining Out recently caught upwith Ken and Cindy overrefreshing sips of Hong Kong-style milk tea inside their cafe,where we bridged the 5,000-milegap between Hawaii and HongKong.

DO: Can you explain howAnytime Cafe is similar to the cafe-style in Hong Kong?

Ken: The Hong Kong-style isEast meets West, and we do offerHong Kong-style cuisine, such aswonton noodles, which is very tra-

ditional, along with our HongKong-style milk tea. We do servepasta as well, as do many HongKong cafes, but I believe our pastacan be deemed authentic Italian.Hong Kong cafes are open longhours, too.

Cindy: There’s a variety ofcuisines at Hong Kong cafes andthat’s the concept that we aim forhere.

DO: What’s the differencebetween a “cafe-style cuisine” and“restaurant-style cuisine?”

Cindy: I believe restaurantsfocus more on a specific type ofcuisine, while here at a cafe weoffer a bit of everything.Everything on the menu is avail-able to our customers once weopen — so they can easily havepizza or pasta for breakfast if theywant.

DO: Anytime Cafe specializes inItalian-style and Hong Kong-stylecuisine, in addition to local favoritesincluding oxtail soup and locomoco. What is the ultimate goalwhen it comes to this restaurant?

Ken: Our goal is to offer a casualdining experience at a reasonableprice where there’s something foreveryone. We work to make thisplace very family-friend-ly, serving only thebest-quality prod-ucts.

DO: You folksrecently releaseda new menu.Can you elab-orate onyour latestculinarylineup?

Ken: Yes, the new menucame out in July, and we addedsome new items and worked tomake it more visually appealingto our customers. The menualso is translated into Chineseand Japanese.

Cindy: The old menu was tem-porary and we wanted to seewhat items would sell beforegoing all out on the new menu.Now, after being open for 1 1/2years, it’s safe to say that weknow what our customers like.

DO: Tell us about a few of yoursignature items.

Ken: Our Baked Pork Chopwith Fried Rice ($12.95) is a topitem consisting of pork chop andonions with our own homemadetomato sauce over fried rice.Those who enjoy pasta seem tolove the Fresh Clams Spaghettiniwith White Wine Sauce ($9.95),the clams are sauteed fresh inolive oil with an irresistible garlicwhite wine sauce — you reallycan’t beat this deal. Then, ofcourse, the Shrimp Risotto($12.95) is worth mentioning, asshrimp and bay shrimp is sim-mered in a pink tomato brothover authentic Italian risotto. ChefSonny Laforteza, who workedwith us at Banana Leaf, is now incharge of cooking up all ourItalian and local dishes.

DO: Can you tell us about yourunique dishes?

Wong: Thai Style Pork Cheek isvery special and our Shrimp WonTon Noodle is very unique. For$6.95, diners receive one of ournewest appetizers Thai Style PorkCheek, marinated and servedwith a spicy dipping sauce. As forthe Shrimp Wonton Noodle inBroth ($8.25), the recipe is tradi-tional Hong Kong-style and thenoodles themselves come fromVancouver. The wonton is filledwith shrimp and minced pork,and the soup is made fresh every-day. A lot of Chinese people who

want traditional Hong Kong noo-dles come to our restaurant. I’min charge of cooking all theChinese food.

DO: You folks work very longhours here, open to midnight onmost days. When are you the mostbusy?

Ken: Dinner and after dinnerare the busiest times for us. A lotof our customers work in restau-rants and hotels, and after workthey come here to enjoy a late din-ner. Usually on the weekends peo-ple are waiting outside to get atable.

DO: Do you plan to add moreitems to the menu in the nearfuture?

Cindy: We just came out withthis new menu, so once cus-tomers get used to it, then we’llbegin to add on more specials.Right now we’re working on per-fecting Thai-style curry and stir-fried spaghettini.

Ken: Also, we’d like to add on aHappy Hour from 2 to 5 p.m. laterin the year when we feature HongKong-style desserts. Afternoon teais really popular in Hong Kong andwe’d like to add that to the menu,too.

DO: What can customerslook forward to in the future?

Cindy: We hope to extendour hours, hopefully become a24-hour establishment one day.But we have to wait until wehave the manpower to do so.

DO: Business seems to be doingextremely well, as the restaurantis always bustling with customers.What do you attribute that to?

Ken: We have a lot of loyal cus-tomers who tell their friendsabout us and because of that weare able to bring in more cus-tomers. There are also patronswho visit from out of town. We’revery lucky to be doing so well.

Kamaaina would agree that oneof the best things about living inthe islands is being able to

savor the delicious tastes of thehearty plate lunch. And with platelunch seemingly always on the brain,locals know that Rainbow Drive-In inKapahulu is their best option for sucha tasty meal.Founded by Sejiu and Ayako Ifuku in

October of 1961, Rainbow Drive-In istoday operated by vice president JimGusukuma, the Ifukus’ son-in-law.According to Gusukuma, the estab-

lishment offers patrons a wide rangeof options that span the rainbow.“For the most part we like to stick

with the original recipes from yearsago, but we have added a few things tothe menu throughout the years,” hesays.For example, Rainbow Drive-In’s

much-loved Shoyu Chicken ($6.25)was derived from a recipe of a formerchef years ago. Since then, the always-requested dish has been satisfying theappetites of hungry diners fromacross the globe.“Our Shoyu Chicken features chick-

en thighs marinated in a sweet andsour sauce consisting of apple cidervinegar, shoyu, sugar and hints of gin-ger,” Gusukuma explains.“It’s not an original recipe at

Rainbow Drive-In, but it’sturned out to be one of ourmost popular dishes and peo-ple really seem to like it. It’sone of our standard platelunches available onMondays, Wednesdays,Fridays and Saturdays.”As for a Rainbow Drive-In

original, the BBQ Steak ($7) isa difficult one to beat. Serveddaily, diners can expect ten-der slices of beef served on abed of cabbage.“Our recipe is old fash-

ioned, and we stick to a moretraditional Japanese teriyakiflavor, using shoyu, sugar anda lot of ginger,” Gusukumastates. “This is a very typicalplate lunch in Hawaii.”All plate lunches come com-

plete with two scoops of riceand macaroni salad.And in honor of Rainbow Drive-In’s

50th anniversary this year, the estab-lishment also is rolling back the pricesto those that were seen in the ’60s and’70s.Upcoming anniversary specials

Customers seeking classic Chinesedishes at reasonable prices have avariety of takeout and dine-in

options at New Liu’s Chop Suey, locatedin the heart of Kamehameha ShoppingCenter. The eatery, which opened inMarch 2002, is especially popular withthe lunch crowd, according to ownerHenry Liu.

“We have good food at good prices,” Liu says. “Our

most crowded times is during lunch on Mondaythrough Friday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our restaurantis good for busy people; those who want fast, easyand convenient meals at a reasonable price.”

When Liu mentions “reasonable prices,” he meansbusiness. The average price per customer is $5-$6,and the restaurant’s menu offers more than 20 dishesthat are daily specials, priced at $4.75 each. Thesespecials feature entrees such as Stuffed Bitter Melonon Rice, Orange Chicken on Rice and Ginger OnionBeef on Rice.

“The specials are offered both day and night,” Liu

confirms, “only at $4.75. These specials include ourCrispy Chicken on Rice, Minute Chicken Cake Noodle,Salt and Pepper Shrimp on Rice and Salt and PepperPork Chop on Rice.”

The latter is the restaurant’s signature dish,according to Liu. He explains that the eatery’s best-seller was the result of a forgotten recipe.

“The master taught me the recipe (for the porkchop) and I forgot an ingredient,” Liu says. “I used myown ingredient instead — I made my own recipe —and it became the restaurant’s signature dish. That’swhat’s so special about it; the pork chop is tender and

a little bit spicy. It’s been one year now (since we usedthat new recipe) and it’s repeatedly requested. Whenpeople do takeout orders, they usually order that.”

Other popular dishes at New Liu’s include HoneyWalnut Shrimp ($9.95), Stuffed Eggplant on Rice($4.75) and Poached Fish ($8.50/$16.95).

“In our Honey Walnut Shrimp, the batter protectsthe flavor in the shrimp,” Liu says. “Once you tastethis dish, you will remember it for the next 100 years.Our Stuffed Eggplant on Rice has a touch of Beijingcuisine. Beijing cuisine is northern (Chinese) cuisine,so it’s more spicy; the dish is based on our sweet andsour sauce and has a touch of spice. Our Poached

Fish is ‘country style,’ meaning it’s very simple —containing shoyu, ginger, green onion; no complicat-ed ingredients — but it tastes very good.”

The most recent additions to the restaurant’s menuinclude Oxtail Soup ($9.50) and Salt and Pepper DuckWing on Rice ($4.75).

“We added the Oxtail Soup a year ago; the duckwing, we just added on (the menu),” Liu says.

While the restaurant offers both dine-in and takeout options, Liu notes that 80 percent of his cus-tomers prefer takeout. In addition to the daily spe-cials for $4.75 each, the lunch plates ($5.50) — PotRoast Pork, Sweet and Sour Ribs, Chop Suey, Crispy

Gau Gee and Rice — and dinner plates ($5.95) —Ginger Chicken, Sweet and Sour Spareribs, BeefBroccoli, Crispy Gau Gee and Fried Rice — are popu-lar options as well.

New Liu’s is also a popular destination for thoselooking for party venues. The restaurant providesseveral different party menus — featuring dishessuch as Beef Broccoli, Roast Duck, Oyster SauceChicken and Steamed Fish — from which customerscan choose. was talking about Larry’sBakery’s White Chantilly Cake($13 for an 8-by-8-inch cake). “We created the cake for peo-

ple who cannot have choco-late,” explains Iris Yafuso, whoco-owns the bakery with herbrother, Lance. But evenchocolate fiends will find thisone unbeatable. Light, fluffyand moist, the delectable treatis filled with a white chiffonfrosting and sprinkled withmacadamia nuts on top.While this may be one of the

bakery’s most well-known con-coctions, it’s certainly not allLarry’s has to offer. Larry’s hasa vast menu of treats, includingpastries such as CinnamonTwist ($1.40) and Apple orCoconut Halfmoon ($1.40); piessuch as French Apple ($11),Pear ($11) and CoconutCustard ($10.50); and cakessuch as Haupia, Guava andDobash.Larry’s has been a family-run

Sikdorak Korean Restaurant may have made its namewith yakiniku, but the Keeaumoku Street eatery also hasan assortment of soups that are ideal for this time of year.

“Soup is very popular with Korean people,” says restau-rant co-owner Andy Chang. As proof of this statement, heimmediately mentions the traditional Seolleongtang($3.95), a Korean broth soup similar to the local stand-by,oxtail soup.

“It tastes very good,” the chef says with a smile.Another soup Chang highly recommends sinking your

spoon into is the Soft Tofu Soup ($7.95). Made with ananchovy base and loaded with chunks of soft tofu andseafood, if you could blend summer into a soup, thiswould be it.

to hear co-owner Andy Chang tell it.“We’ve been doing pretty well; business has been going

up,” says Chang, who started Sikdorak with partner PatrickChoi last year.

Located in the Samsung Plaza on busy Keeaumoku Street— commonly called “Koreamoku” for the abundance ofKorean eateries found around this bustling downtown neigh-borhood –— Sikdorak is a haven for those craving a bit ofKorean yakiniku cuisine.

Best of all, it is open 24 hours, seven days a week, perfectfor those late-night dinner crawls.

“We have an all-you-can-eat buffet, 24 hours a day,” saysChang, referring to Sikdorak’s never-ending supply of brisket,rib-eye, short rib, pork belly, seasoned beef, barbecue chick-en, spicy pork, tripe and beef tongue.

Priced at just $19.95 per person (minimum two people),the meal also comes with “lots of lettuce, peppers, garlic,kim chee and four kinds of side dishes that are differentevery day,” Chang adds.

As if the promise of comforting “Seoul” food at all hoursof the day isn’t enough, Sikdorak also invites customers tobring their own beer or wine to accompany their meal selec-tion.

Ingredients:• 1 pound shrimp, peeled and cleaned

• 1 cup celery, sliced • 8 cups chicken stock• 4 cups rice, cooked• 1 tablespoon Aloha shoyu

• Large pinch sugar and black pepper

• 1/4 cup green onion, cut about an inch long

• 1/4 cup cilantro, cut about an inch long

• 1 tablespoon ginger, thin slices

Preparation:• Combine chicken stock and cel-ery, bring to a boil, add shrimpon high heat, remove all the

scum; add cooked rice. • Season with sugar, pepper,Aloha shoyu, then add ginger,green onion and cilantro. Turn offheat.Tips: Make sure to taste the soupbefore serving, as some chickenstock may have no sodium. Addmore shoyu or salt, if desired.Shrimp can be substituted withscallop, calamari, fresh fish,chicken, etc.

Shoyu Pork | 4 servingsIngredients:• 1.5 pounds pork about 1-2 inch-es thick• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil• 2 cups Aloha low-sodium soysauce

• 2 cups chicken stock• 1/2 cup sugar• 1 tablespoon ginger• 1 stalk green onion• 1 stalk Chinese parsley• 1 head garlic, cut in half• 3 bay leaves• 1/2 tablespoon black pepper• 1 cinnamon stick• 10 cloves• 3 star anise• 2 dried shiitake mushroom

Preparation:• In a hot pan, add vegetable oil

The combination dish of walnuts and shrimp is a rel-atively easy item to find throughout China.Traditionally, the dish was simply prepared, withplain shrimp, either steamed or fried, mixed with walnuts,mayonnaise and sometimes thick milk. As Chinese cui-sine made its way to the U.S. and restaurants began toflourish, however, each eatery began offering its ownunique style of the traditional dish. Henry Liu, owner of New Liu’s Chop Suey, has found hisown version of this cultural delight, and loyal patronshave asked him not to change his secret recipe.“We cook our Honey Glazed Walnut Shrimp differentlyhere. Many of our guests are ready to order it before theyeven sit down.” says Liu. “It looks simple, but it is not easy to make. There aremany steps — it feels like 10,000 — but in the end, the

taste is just right. The walnut and the shrimp get along sowell together.” One of Liu’s secrets is the use of batter before cookingthe shrimp.“The quality of the shrimp goes well with the batterbecause the flavor of the shrimp is inside. But if you cookthe shrimp without the batter, the flavor almost escapesfrom the dish,” says Liu.Liu credits his patrons with helping him perfect thedish.“I learn from our loyal guests,and the way they like it.
