“Hy het beslis ’n baie spesiale plek in my hart.” Ashley se skoolhoof, Martin Leukes van Dr. G.J. Joubert Primêre Skool, sê hy was ’n goeie leerling wat altyd baie stil was. Ashley Adonis (10)

    Rockywaters forBlue Flag status?

    NIKITA SYLVESTER

    HelderbergresidentsareconcernedthatBi-

kini Beach in Gordons Bay may be at risk

of losing its Blue Flag status due to the ab-

surd number of rocks covering the shore.

Art Ridgway, who has been fishing in the ar-

ea for over 40 years, suggests that this problem

could have something to do with the dredging.

    Sandgetsmovedall thetime,soitcouldhave

an effect on the beach on the other side of the

harbour, explains Ridgway, adding that there

would be a number of other factors to consider

    too.

As a result of the rock problem, he feels that

Bikini Beach is no longer worthy of its Blue

Flag status. This is not aBlueFlagbeach.Kids

cry when they swim here. It is dangerous for

all swimmers. Bikini beach was once a beauti-

    ful beach; now its barren.

The City of Cape Towns MayCo member for

    Community Services, Tandeka Gqada, said

that Bikini Beach falls within an originally

rocky shore rocks are the natural coastline,

but sediment transport (including beach sand)

within a bay is driven by circulation caused

by long-shore currents. The same would hap-

pen in Gordons Bay. Therefore, sand at this

    locationwould have originally been continual-

    ly removed and replenished naturally.

However, with the construction of the har-

    bour,andmainlytheharbourwall, thiscircula-

    tion was cut off.

Due to this, there was no process for sand re-

moval, resulting in the formation of a sandier

beach what is known today as Bikini Beach.

The challengewith this situation is that the

    natural,rockyshorestillremains,andthelarge

deposits of rock on the beach stems from the

natural occurrence of rocks on this section of

    the coast, she said.

Over the years, the City has been responding

to public requests by moving the rocks out of

the bathers way, or by moving sand to cover

    the boulders.

Thesemeasures are being carried out in or-

der to provide a comfortable beach for visitors.

Bikini Beach therefore requires ongoing inter-

    vention.

It must also be emphasised that, short of re-

moving the harbour wall, the City will have to

continue with these measures in perpetuity.

The situation at Bikini Beach will not jeop-

ardise its Blue Flag status, Gqada stated.

Residents and visitors to Bikini Beach in Gor

dons Bay enduring the rocky terrain.

    According to the Blue Flag

    website:

    Beaches are awarded Blue Flag

    status based on compliance with

    32 criteria covering the

    following:

    1. Environmental

    Education & Information

    2. Water Quality

    3. Environmental

    Management

    4. Safety and Services

All Blue Flags are awarded for

    one season at a time.

If the criteria are not fulfilled

during the season or the condi

tions change, the Blue Flag may

    be withdrawn.

    JAMEY THOMAS

An elderly man from Somerset West fell

victim to an attempted hijacking in broad

daylight while en route to his home on

    Thursday 17 January.

According to Thomas Brett (72), who has

been living in the Briza area for more than

32 years, the incident occurred around 12:00

in Little Street. With the window down and

    his armrestingon thedoor,Thomaswasdriv-

ing down the street relatively slowly. Howev-

er, about 20 m before he reached the stop

street to turn into Smuts Avenue, a man sud-

denly stepped off the sidewalk into the road.

While approaching the bakkie, he was

making some hand gestures atme, urgingme

    to slowdown.Sincehewasneatlydressedand

looked like he needed some help, I stopped,

    said Thomas.

Thomas thought that the man was going to

ask for some directions, but then all hell

    broke loose.

He cameup to thewindowand I remember

thinking I wonder what this man wants,

when a knife suddenly appeared in his right

    hand.Theblade thensliced throughmyarm.

Out of fear that themanwould do himmore

harm with the blade, which he estimated to

    be20 cmlong,Thomasmovedtowardsthepas-

sengers side. According to Thomas his at-

tacker saw this as the perfect opportunity to

help himself to his bakkies key. After grab-

bing the key, he also demanded money.

He took my wallet, as well

    asmy cellphonewhichwas vis-

    ible in my shirt pocket.

    Before the attacker could

    make off with his possessions,

    Thomaspleaded that he just re-

    turn his drivers licence.

I dont know exactly what I

said or how I said it, but some-

how this man felt for me. May-

    be itwasmyage.He then threw

    my keys and drivers licence

over the bakkie, close to the

    pavement,explainedThomas,

    who was surprised that his

    keys were returned since he

had been convinced that the at-

tacker would take off with his

    bakkie.

    Whilehegotoutof thebakkie

to collect the items, the attack-

    er ran away.

    Itwas only then that Thomas

    realised his arm was bleeding

    andhis clotheswere covered in

    blood.

Luckily there was nomoney in mywallet,

but I had to stop all my bank cards and my

cellphone account. After notifying my wife,

I also reported the incident to thepolice, said

    Thomas.

Despite his anger over the fact that an inno-

cent person meaning to do good was violated

and harmed, Thomas says that he is grateful

    tohavesurvived thehorrificordeal.Hewould

like to implore people not to be complacent.

    JAMEY THOMAS

The Strand police has confirmed the identi-

ty of the pedestrian which was struck down

and killed by one of their own in the Strand

    on Friday 14 December.

The incident occurred around 17:45 in

    Main Road.

A Somerset West couple, who witnessed

    theaccidentwhilstdrivingto thebeachwith

a friend, related the incident toDistrictMail

    last week.

According to them a woman had stopped

in the middle of the road (on the white line)

in an attempt to get to the other side when

suddenly they noticed a speeding police ve-

    hicle approaching.

The driver of the car said that the police

vehicle was approaching at a very high

    speedinthemiddleof theroad,andalthough

he slowed down and moved as far left as he

could in order for the police van to pass

them, the pedestrians fate was inevitable.

One of the witnesses recalls the pedestri-

the air like a rag doll, landing face down on

    the tar road.

incident pending the investigation, they fi-

disappearing with a large sum of money be-

longing to various businesses that had spon-

sored his fictitious Helderberg Wheels and

sports grounds and the event organiser Rall

    nowhere to be found.

Months before Rall advertised the event

throughout the Helderberg and beyond to be

a weekend of fun and entertainment for the

whole family, as well as a charity outreach.

Rall not only conned business owners but

also his only employee, Charn Prins, and his

wife who claims she was unaware of his

whereabouts after he disappeared with the

    money.

Several fraud charges were made against

Rall which led to his arrest on 22 December

    2012.

Strand police have confirmed that three

fraud charges relating to the HWO expo are

    currently being investigated.

According to police officers, Rall was seen

walking in Strand Roadwhen the officers im-

mediately recognised his face and arrested

    him.

Rall claims that he was on his way to the

    Constable Mthokozisi Gama,

    Lwandle police spokesperson, says

the increase in these arrests was due

    to increased policing, with several

    road blocks held during December,

    along with increased patrols.

    Spokesperson for the Somerset

    West police, constable Suzan

    Jantjies, says they experienced a

slight increase in crime over the fes-

    tive season.

    Macassar police spokesperson,

    Constable Chrisy Young, says police

patrols also paid off in their area.

There was a general decrease in

crime compared to last year. This

might be due to a number of imbizos

festive season last year. The public

has also been very helpful in report-

    Strand police spokesperson, Colo-

Kokkie, died on 26 December, his

    family couldnotaffordaproperburi-

of 40 Somerset Mall car guards took

    the initiative to contrib-

    ute R100 each towards

    the funeral of their be-

    loved friend.

    According to Abdul-

    lahSheikh,whomanag-

    es thecarguards, a little

    over R7 000 was raised

    and handed over to the

    family on 28 December.

    About R4 000 was col-

    lected by the car guards

    and the rest was con-

    tributed by Sheikh and

    the company which ad-

    ministers the car

    guards, Golden Mile.

Kokkie was a great guy, who had

a passion for what he did. And here

at Somerset Mall he was part of the

family a family who helps each

other where they can, however they

    can, said Abdullah.

Kokkie started his job as a car

    guardatSomersetMall in1999,short-

ly after retiring as a typesetter atDie

Burger, where he had worked for 25

    years.

According to a close friend, An-

    drewBezuidenhout, they started out

    as car guards together. However,

    Kokkiedidmore than lookout for the

cars. He used to feed the

birds in the area every day,

and after a while they knew

when it was feeding time. He also

    planted flowers outside the Mall,

    laughed Andrew.

He says that Kokkie was a sweet

guywhowas a hit with each and eve-

ry customer. He had this positive

aura about him. He would get smiles

from his customers, and even hugs.

Kokkies wife, Rita would like to

    express her utmost gratitude to-

    wards everyone for theirmuchneed-

ed contribution. She says that the

money covered all the funeral ex-

penses and there was still some left

    for a rainy day.

My husband was a peoples per-

son and its so inspirational to know

that there are still people who care

about others like he did. I am truly

    grateful.

Rita did, however, not want to

make her husbands cause of death

    known,but saidhehadsuffered from

prostate cancer in earlier years and

that he had endured a great deal of

time slipped into a coma. He passed

away in his sleep, she said.

Kokkies funeral took place on 29

Unfortunately so to are our quiet

Now that most people are back at

    once again filled with aggressive

    and selfish drivers.

There seems to be more and more

bad drivers on our road every year

and less and less being done by traf-

fic officials to curb this affliction.

    Insteadof joiningtheever increas-

ing number of these lawless drivers

why dont we do something about

    them.

For starters,it will help if we all

make a concerted effort to obey the

rules of the roadand report repeated

    offenders to the authorities.

If enough motorists keep on re-

    porting these bad drivers, surely

    something will be done.

    Judicial system

    benefits criminals

Your articles in a recent Dis-

    trictMail about a con-man Mr

    Rall amazes me.

    People seem to be extremely

naive and so for that matter is

    our judicial system!

Here is a man who was con-

    victed of fraud, condemned and

locked up, then freed, and no

    sooner set free again commits

fraud and is locked up again,

    freed again and starting the

    thing over again, and every

    body trusts him, claiming how

    is it possible...! while nobody

dares to say that our judges are

weak and part and parcel of the

    increase of criminal activity.

    Arewe the countrywhereone

can get away with murder on

    conditionwe show remorse and

    explain things thoroughly!

Not that one is asking for the

    death penalty to be reinstated,

    whichisanotherpointofdiscus-

sion, but being too lenient on

    criminalsdoesnt stop themand

makes them laugh at our weak

    judicial system, where more

    compassion is shown towards

    criminals than towards offend-

    ed parties!

    Useorganic herbicide

Everybody in the Helderberg is being

sprayed with dangerous chemicals on a

    daily basis without their consent.

    Manypeople suffer fromallergic reac-

tions to these chemicals. The spraying

on the vineyards and fruit farms causes

huge environmental damage, as well as

    the municipality spraying weed killer

along the roads and around shops.

    Garden services should promote or-

ganic and individual homes should be

    careful. Clearing of alien vegetation

along rivers using herbicide seems a

    very counterproductive way of doing

things. The rivers and seas are very pol-

    Somerset West resident Fennis Parkin-

son was in awe of the scene that played

out in front of her this past weekend.

She observed a 40 mm spider hunting

    wasp dragging a paralised huntsman

    spideronthecouchto thekitchenonSat-

    urday afternoon.

Realising wemight get stung, we put

    heronamagazineandprecariously took

her into the garden. She was still at-

tached to her prey, told Parkinson.

Pulling her spider, she proceeded to

race towards thepool, so I interferedand

placed her at the other end of the pool.

I was exhausted watching her pull such

    a heavy-weight over such a distance, up

walls, over bricks until she found her

    nest under the shed.

    Inasecondincidentover theweekend,

Parkinson saw the same female wasp

with an even bigger spider come from

    thedirectionof thepool pump.Thewasp

was intent on heading for the shed.

I followed her and she managed to

stuff this huge creature through a small

space under the floor boards. Thiswasp,

    Ibelieve, is fromthepompilidae family,

    said this nature enthusiast.

Parkinson, who lives in Briza, Somer-

    Decision time forMusic Society

    Theannualmeetingof theSomersetWestMu-

sic Society takes place on Sunday 27 January

at 18:00 in the Library hall.

This year, important decisions on which

the continuance of the society could depend

will be put to a vote.

Over the last few seasons the society has

seen a substantial decrease in membership

numbers (from 65 to 44) due to long standing

membersmoving from the area or sadly pass-

ing away. In addition the present economic

climate has had a detrimental effect on the

societys finances due to increasing fees de-

    mandedbyartists,plus theLibraryHallpiano

is old and requires regular expensivemainte-

nance, said Essie Koekemoer, society chair-

    person.

She added that in order to guarantee the so-

    ciety remains viable, membership subscrip-

tions must be raised, and a new fee structure

    for membership has been proposed.

    Allmembersareurged toattend this impor-

    tantmeeting, also anynonmemberswhomay

be interested in joining or offering sponsor-

    ship to the society.

In a departure from the usual format, the

eveningwill commencewith a short piano re-

cital by 22 year old Megan-Geoffrey Prins, a

    regularandpopularperformerforthesociety,

who travels to Cleveland (USA) at the end of

themonth to audition for a place and scholar-

ship at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

The business of the AGMwill follow the re-

cital, after which drinks and light refresh-

ments will be served. Phone 021 856 1847 for

    Its temptingtobuythingsyoumightnot

otherwise be able to afford on credit, but

debt can be a major drain on your finances

and dent your long-term financial goals,

    says NDMA CEO, Magauta Mphahlele.

    Shesays justbecause lendersmaybewill-

ing to give you a loan, doesnt mean you

should take up the loan or the full amount

offered. Before taking on creditmake sure

that you have enough money to cover your

    regular expenses, emergencies and future

    price increases, she adds.

    Important expenses to consider include

    household and car maintenance, school

    fees, transport, food andmunicipality bills.

It is also important to set money aside or

have insurance to cover emergencies like

    illness, death and retrenchment.

Consumers can approach the NDMA for

advice if they are not sure of what their

    rights or options are.

    Tips for borrowing wisely

) Understand your rights and obliga-

tions: This will ensure that you make the

right decisions. Also, know your options

and where to go in case problems arise.

) Borrow within your means: Only bor-

row what you can afford and try as much

as possible to borrow for essential things

like a house, a car, small business, educa-

    tion etc.

)Make your payments on time and in

full: You may think missing a payment is

not abigdeal, butdoing sowithout the lend-

    erspermissionwillnegatively impactyour

credit rating and you could paymore inter-

    est in the long run.

) Understand how much interest you

will pay: The amount of the loan and the

time you take to repay the loan will have

    abig impact onhowmuchyoull spendover

the life of the loan. Make sure you under-

stand how interest is calculated and what

the loanwill cost youafter all other fees and

    charges are included.

) Read the small print: Dont feel pressu-

    rised intosigninga loanagreementwithout

taking the time to understand the condi-

    tions. Itsalsoyourrighttoaskanindepend-
