Die brand wat verlede Woensdagoggend by

    Gateblamed for excessive flooding

    DALEEN FOUCH

Residents of Penny Lane in Cherrywood

Gardens, Somerset West are blaming a

    gate inastreamfor flooddamage to their

    homes.

The recent spate of cold fronts caused

flooding across the Helderberg, but resi-

dents of Penny Lane believe their houses

    wouldnothavebeenaffectedhad the stream

    not been diverted.

Tom Hertog, a retired mining engineer,

    livesnext to thepropertywhere thegatewas

erected and is convinced that the gate

caused the stream to change its course and

flood four houses in Penny Lane.

Hertog says he saw debris blocking the

gate and causing thewater level to rise. The

    courseof thestreamwasdivertedasaresult,

    and the houses were flooded.

But Chris Marais, the manager of Rome

Homestead, where the gate was erected, de-

nies that the gate had anything to do with

    the flooding.

He pointed out that the staff of Rome

Homestead cleaned the debris from the gate

    the evening before the flood.

    Marais addedthatwaterwasnot just flow-

ing from this specific stream, but from vari-

ous other sources that contributed to the

    flooding. Rome Homestead also suffered

    damages.

One Penny Lane resident, whose home

was flooded on Wednesday evening, 28 Au-

gust, said the water was knee-deep.

    Theresidentwhowishes toremainanony-

mous, says his family has to stay in a hotel

until the house is livable again.

He added that it is not the first time the

gate diverted the stream and caused flood-

ing. In 2009 he approached the City of Cape

Town regarding the gate. I read inmy title

deed that one is not allowed to restrict or

    block the flow of water.

But after correspondence with City offi-

cials, no action was taken. In his corre-

    spondencehe suggested the streamcouldbe

diverted into a storm water drain, but no

    action was taken.

Stuart Pringle, ward councillor for the

area, said he was not aware of the problem,

but resolved to start investigating immedi-

ately. While I encourage residents tomake

use of the 0860 103 089 call centre number

and deal directly with officials, I am availa-

    ble to assist wherever needed.

This gate, erected in the flow of a stream is

blamed for the flooding of at least four

houses in Penny Lane, after the debris built

up against the gate and diverted its flow.

    The Hottentots Holland mountains were

covered in snow on Friday last week and

    many residents, armed with cameras,

were out and about taking photos.

DistrictMail editor, Mark Stuart has been

living in Somerset West since 1990. He said

he recalls seeing the mountains covered in

snow like this about 23 years ago, soon after

he moved here. But, he says, even then the

snowhadnot fallen asheavily or as lowdown

on the mountains as last week.

    According toGail Linnow, client liaisonof-

ficer for the regional weather office in the

Western Cape, there are no weather stations

in the areas where snow fell, so there is no

way to measure how much snow fell here.

Linnow says local residents last saw snow

this low on the Hottentots Hollandmountain

    range in the 1980s.

    Heavy showers fromWednesday to Friday

lastweek caused flooding all over theHelder-

    berg.

A total of 108 mm fell from Tuesday 27 Au-

    gust to Monday 2 September.

According to Linnow, the Strand hadmore

rain last week than the normal total for the

whole of August. The total was 235,2 mm for

this August, while the average rainfall for

    August is 101,9 mm.

Furthermore, the total rainfall from Janu-

    ary2013 todate is807,6 mmthehighestsince

    1997.

    The minimum temperature in August

measured one degree colder at 8,5C than the

    averageminimumforAugust,which is 9,5C.

The average minimum for August 2012 was

    7,3C.

Informal areas in the Helderberg were

worst affected, but the more affluent areas

were not spared. Many roads were flooded.

    By late Wednesday afternoon, several

homes at Kays Caravan Park in Strand were

flooded when the Lourensriver bursts its

    banks.

    The Strand Sector 3NeighbourhoodWatch

and Strand Police were on the scene quickly

to help residents evacuate their homes and

transport them to the Strand Scouts Hall.

    According toNeelsTruter, chairmanof the

    neigbourhood watch many Helderberg resi-

dents, businesses and the NG Lourensrivier

    congregation supplied warm clothes, blan-

kets, food and mattresses to make the dis-

placed families as comfortable as possible.

The Watch worked around the clock on

Wednesday and Thursday to ensure that af-

fected residents and their homes were safe.

By Saturday, they hadmoved back into their

    homes.

    Charlotte Powell, head: public awareness

    Management said their department recorded

that 950 informal houses and 3 430 people liv-

    ing in informalareashadbeenaffectedby the

    blankets worth R627 900.

to be transferred. The emergency centre was

closed and neighbouring hospitals were in-

formed of a possible overflow of patients as

    a result.

Did you know that the friendly,

People need to be treated with

respect in order for them to work

well. We are all born as creative

people and need to be given the op-

portunity to grow to prove this.

    Christo, who has been running

    this highly successful coffee shop

together with his wife Lizette for

the past ten years, believes that

their success is also due to good

    business ethics.

Christo is also of the opinion

that in too many businesses today

there are too many managers and

    too few leaders.

He defines a leader as someone

who looks after and cares about

    the growthandwelfare of staff and

    leads by example.

    He admits that starting the

    Farmhouse was not all smooth

    along the way.

The first three years were ex-

tremely tough and we tried all

sorts of things, not all of them suc-

    cessful.

People kept on saying to us we

needed to find our own recipe to

make the business work, but no-

body was prepared to tell us what

that recipe was so we had to find

    it out ourselves.

    The concept and the name

    Farmhouse came from my

    mother-in-law and this concept to-

gether with the frozen meals and

    a good breakfast has always

    worked.

    Christo says the changes they

Ek kan nie glo hoekom die if its

not broken, why fix it? konsep by

    partybesighedeverbygaannie!Ek

    praat vanCUM-boeke in Somerset

    Mall.

Cum se hoof besigheid is boeke

en as n sekondre inkomste be-

    dienhulleookkoffie, tee,koekens.

Di gedeelte van hul winkel het

    gou n gunsteling kuierplek ge-

word. n Groot rede daarvoor was

    dat hulle die mees bekostigbare

koffie in die Mall gebied het en

    daarmee saam ook lekker, smaak-

    like en bekostigbare eetgoed. Die

    kombinasie was duidelik n wen-

ner, veral ook by die ouer mense.

    Natuurlik het die boekeafdeling

    vandiewinkelookvoordeelgetrek

So n koffie en refill kos nou R25.

Vergelyk dit met Cafe Rosini, vir

wie drink en eetgoed hul hoof in-

komste is, en hulle vra R15 vir n

koffie en refill. Hulle bied ook n

ontbyt en koffie aan vir R29,90.

Spur bied n bottomless koffie met

hul ontbyt, en so kan ek aangaan.

Wimpy koffie is R12. Dis eet- en

    drinkplekke, hulle verkoop nie

    boeke as n sekondre besigheid

nie. En Cum hoop om mededin-

gend te bly? Watter besigheid ver-

hoog enige prys met 50% en 100%

op n slag? En dit vir koffie! Kyk

maar na enige plek wat koffie be-

    dien,wanneerhullepryseverhoog

doen hulle dit met R1 maksimum.

Hoekom? Want klante wil nie uit-

    gebuit word nie.

    Asof die koffie-verhoging by

Cum nie genoeg is nie, het hulle

    ook hulle van eetgoed-verskaffer

verander. (En glo my daar was

niks met hul vorige een verkeerd

nie.) Waar n heerlike sny koek en

    koffie voorheenR30 gekos het, kos

    ditnouR40wanthulnuweverskaf-

fer se pryse is belaglik! n Mens

mag dalk dink dat hulle net hulle

    winsgrens wou verhoog, maar dit

kan nie wees nie. Neem byvoor-

    beeld hulle wortel-muffin. Dit het

R10 by Smiling Oven (hulle vorige

verskaffer) gekos en Cum het dit

teen R18 verkoop. Dit is n profyt

van amper 100%. So Cum het wel

    goedgeldgemaakenhulklantehet

    nie gevoel hulle word uitgebuit

nie. Nou is dit n ander saak.

Nou vra ek net of dit nou nie n

kwessie is van jouself in die voet

    skiet nie? Die afgelope langna-

week het al die plekke in die Mall

uit hul nate gebars, maar Cum se

    tafeltjies was leeg. Meeste klante

    voel dat Cum geldgierig geword

het en dit ten onkoste van hulle ja-

    relange, lojale klante.

    Brenda du Plessis, operasionele

    bestuurder by CUM-Boeke lewer

    kommentaar:

Ons klinte se opinie is vir ons

    baie belangrik, daarom maak

    CUM-Boeke graag van hierdie ge-

leentheid gebruik om te reageer op

    Susann Donnelly se brief.

    Soos enige ander besigheid moet

CUM-Boeke van tyd tot tyd vernu-

we. Nie net omdat ons graag vars

en nuut wil wees nie, maar ook om-

dat die sentrumbestuur dit van ons

verwag. Natuurlik sluit dit die kof-

    fiekroeg-gedeelte van onswinkel in.

Daarom het ons onlangs nuwe ta-

    fels en stoele in onskoffiekroeggesit

om n nuwe voorkoms aan daardie

gedeelte van die winkel te gee.

    Ookdie spyskaartmoes vernuwe,

want geen restaurant bied vir tien

    jaar dieselfde spyskaart sonder om

veranderinge aan te bring nie. Ons

het na ons klinte geluister en op

    grond van hul voorkeure verande-

    ringe aangebring aan die spys-

kaart. Ongelukkig kan ons nie aan

    almalsevoor- enafkeuregehoorgee

nie, maar probeer n wye verskei-

    denheid eet- en drinkgoed aanbied

    waaruit ons klinte kan kies.

Weens ons goeie pryse en uitste-

kende diens is ons koffiekroeg n

    baie gewilde kuierplek. Omdat

    CUM-Boeke egter niemarkverwan-

Ons wil egter be-

    klemtoon dat ons steeds produkte

van die hoogste gehalte bied teen

    kompeterendepryse.Diemeestevan

    ons klinte aanvaar hierdie veran-

    deringewat ons aangebring het, en

is baie gelukkig daarmee. Daar is

egter enkele klinte wat dalk nie

    hiermee saamstem nie en verkies

om nie meer ons koffiekroeg te be-

soek nie. Alhoewel ons jammer is

oor hul besluit, respekteer ons hul

    keuse.

is not much they can do.

    One can understand that people

who are unhappy with their work

The presentation is part of the schools con-

This annual event started more than two

decades ago as part of Beaumonts Fun Day.

Terry Erasmus was one of the first pupils

who worked in the Beaumont Bonsai Drag-

ons garden during the eighties. Today Terry

is president of the Cape Bonsai Kai and also

the owner of Bonsai Tree, a Bonsai business

The programme will include a young de-

    points and basic Bonsai styles.

Members of the publicwill also have the op-

portunity to consult experienced growers for

    "USINESS

    Howpolitics affect investment

I am a firm believer in never discuss-

    ingsex, religionandpoliticsat thedin-

    nertable,partly tomaskmyignorance

on the topics, but mostly just to avoid

any nasty surprises from my dinner

    guests.

Thisweek Iwould like to breakmy rule

and touch on the current South African

political landscape and how this is affect-

    ing investment decisions.

Believe it or not the Zumas govern-

ment has actually been quite good for

    business and that is because

    they do nothingA laissez-faire

approach with little or no gov-

    ernment interference is very

    good for business.

    Therecent launchof theEco-

    nomic Freedom Fighters

    (EFF), led by comebackkid Ju-

    liusMalema, shouldsendshiv-

    ers down any investors back.

    If theEFFdoesmanagetoget

some votes, the ANC will be

forced to move further to the

    left with changes in economic

    policy favouringamoresocial-

    ist approach

    Needless to say this would

    be bad for investors.

The question is, will the EFF get votes?

And the answer is yes; given the partys

likely appeal to the unemployed youth

and the fact that South Africa currently

has the highest percentage of youth be-

tween the ages of 15 and 24 in the world.

    ButwhataretherisksofanArabSpring

    in SA?

    ClemSunter,wellknownscenarioplan-

ner and author of several books, has iden-

tified three ingredients for a Arab

    Spring uprising.

Number one is the before mentioned,

which is a large percentage of unem-

ployed youth, number two is a disconnect

    with government (sound familiar) and

number three is good social networks.

South Africa is three for three; in fact

    weareprobablyaworld leaderonthese

three metrics. But before you pack

your bags for Perth, there is a salient

difference to the Egypts of the world

and that is that we are a true democra-

cy. The risk to our democracy is not

    so much unemployment or poverty,

but inequality, the wealth gap, which

breeds contempt and could go some

way to explaining the resentful and vi-

olent behaviour of criminals in our so-

    ciety.

An interesting side note on the un-

    employment figures,

    which are officially re-

corded as 25%. If you in-

    clude those job seekers

    who have quit looking for

    work then the percentage

    rises to 37%, however if

    take into account South

    Africasmassive informal

    sector,which is estimated

    to be around +-6.5 million

    economically active peo-

    ple then the unemploy-

    ment percentage falls be-

    low 10%.

    As long as people have

the ability to earn an in-

    come, which is adequate

to provide for basic needs, the risk of

an Arab Spring uprising is reduced

    significantly. Take away this ability

and you have a problem, this is why

the recent proposals around the licens-

ing of businesses is worrisome and

    should be resisted.

For most of us: we are economically

trapped in SA, so we better make sure

we keep this ship afloat and lets be

honest there is still no place like home.

Make sure youre registered to vote

    next year.
