    BertieReedsashes stolen

    DELIAH BRINKHUIS

    Every night . . . I said good

    night to him.

These are the words of Pat

    Reed, widow of the well-known

    sailor and adventurer Bertie

Reed, as she dabs away her tears.

Bertie was the first South Afri-

    can solo yachtsman to circum-

    navigate the world three times.

He died on 18 December 2006.

    Pats house in Gordons Bay

    was burgled last Friday after-

noon, and among the stolen items

was a small wooden box with her

    late husbands ashes.

Pat is struggling to come to

    termswithher loss as she tearful-

ly recalls how she would take out

the box at night to talk to theman

she had been married to for 46

    years.

As a last tribute to his life at

    sea, Berties ashes were strewn

over the waves in Gordons Bay

on 19 January 2007, which would

have been his 64th birthday. Pat

kept some of the ashes and saved

these in a little bag in thewooden

box. It occupied a place of honour

in her cupboard, where it stood

    among her perfume bottles.

    She talks lovingly about a

    small toy gorilla named Gonga

that guarded the remains of her

husband where it stood on top of

the kist. Gonga had for many

years also sailed the seven seas

    with its owner.

The burglars alsomade offwith a laptop

and a safe containing the late sailors wal-

let, and the Wolraad Woltemade Award

    for bravery and exceptional seamanship

that Bertie received in 1992 for saving fel-

low competitor, John Martin, during a

    round-the-world competition. Bertie res-

cued Martin from the icy waters of the

Southern Ocean near Cape Horn, after

Martins yacht had struck an iceberg and

    was sinking.

    ASt Christopherpendant andoneof the

many teaspoons that Bertie had collected

on his world trips were also in the safe.

    Pat, whomanages their restaurant Ber-

    ties Moorings in Gordons Bay,

    says she arrived home onFriday

at about 16:10 to find the sliding

    door of herhomeopen. She could

hear her dogs barking at the

back of the house and on closer

    inspection she found that the

    safety gate andwooden door had

    been pried open.

    Horrific thoughts raced

through her mind as she looked

at the contents of her cupboards

    strewn all over the floor.

    Reed said she expected the

worst as she called out to her son

    Stanley and grandson, who live

    with her.

    Theyre murdered, I

thought, she said. As her fran-

    tic screams echoed through the

    house, Stanley camerunningup-

    stairs and relief washed over

    her. They were both unharmed

and were unaware of the burgla-

    ry.

Pat said the laptop was taken

    fromatable in the loungeand the

safe was broken off from where

it was bolted inside a cupboard

    in the bedroom.

I am glad that Stanley did not

    come upstairs while the bur-

    glars were there. Who knows

    what may have happened? she

    said.

SomersetWest CBD is worth the fight

    DALEEN FOUCH

    Business owners and staff alike

    havebeenseverelyaffectedby the

wave of armed robberies in the

    Somerset West CBD.

    However, many remain reso-

lute that theywill not back down.

    American Swiss, which was

robbed of R300 000 in cash in Feb-

ruary and had all its stock stolen

from its shelves in a recent rob-

bery, closed its doors in August.

    Vans Jewellery in Main Road

is under threat of closure due to

the steep increase in armed rob-

    beries.

    Sisters Abbygaile Engelbrecht

and Ilona deWitt took over Vans

    Jewellery from their father, who

    established the business more

    than 57 years ago.

    Engelbrecht says the business

    used to stock top jewellery

brands, but cannot afford to keep

these any longer as theywould at-

    tract robbers.

She says the business itself is

doing fine, thanks to its loyal cus-

tomer base, but fears that crime

will drive them out of the CBD.

    Fernando and Neves Gatinho,

    owners of Central Mini Market,

    established in Somerset West in

    1946, say they are concerned

about crime in the CBD but will

    not give way to criminals.

    Fernando says that although

    criminals have now moved into

    Somerset West, businesses in the

CBD should fight back and not

    leave.

    He explains that leaving the

    CBD will only give criminals

    more space tomove into. Somer-

set West is worth fighting for,

    he says.

He is all for cameras in theCBD

and for the proposed Special Rat-

ings Area (read more on page 7),

but adds that all businesses in the

CBD need to come to the party.

We need to stay in the CBD and

    increase security.

    Glynn Bell, owner of Sweet

of a violent crime, but refuses to

let it influence her life. She says

that although there has been a

spike in armed robberies in the

CBD, she still supports the CBD

shops. We, the shops in the CBD,

    need to stick together.

    MiriamHoosen, owner of Miri-

    been severely affected by the

    crimewave. Peopledonotcome

    people visiting the mall has

    dropped over the last year.

    theirstore,buttheyareverycon-

cerned about the wave of armed

    robberies in theCBD.Theyhave

she refuses to walk through the

CBD and even drives to the li-

brary which is a mere block

away to avoid being a victim

    of crime.

    Gavin proposes that the only

way to combat the robberies is to

have a satellite police station in

the Somerset West CBD and ac-

    tive foot patrols by police.

A woman who works in a store

in the CBD says she was on duty

when the store was held up by

gunmen late last year. She says

    the experience still haunts her,

but adds that she has become

    more vigilant and has increased

    her personal safety measures.

    I stillworkherebecause Ineed

the job, but I am terrified to go to

The woman has called on busi-

    Anotherarmedrobberybrings total to30

    JAMEY GORDON

On the very day the DistrictMail reported

that 29 armed robberies had occurred in

the Helderberg since the beginning of the

year, another armed robbery occurred in

Somerset West this time at Truworths.

The robbery occurred at 17:20 on Thursday

last week and brings to 30 the number of

armed robberies that have hit businesses in

the Helderberg in the last eight months.

Three armed men entered the clothing

store, threatened staff and demanded cash.

They fled the scene with an undisclosed

amount of money from the cash registers and

    safe and a Blackberry cellphone.

    TheSomersetWest Police are investigating

    a case of business robbery.

    Businesses are increasingly worried about

safety in the CBD. American Swiss closed its

doors after losing R300 000 in cash in an

armed robbery in February, and having its

shelves cleared in another armed robbery

    in July.

    DistrictMail asked the SomersetWest Po-

lice to comment on the latest figures and

what was being done about the situation.

    Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson

for the Somerset West Police, said, We

choose to staywith the comments previous-

lymade regarding the CBD robberies. They

remain abig concern for us andwewill con-

tinue to fight crime in this area, she said.

The station said last week that a number

of measures had been instituted, such as

    business forummeetings for business own-

    ersandmanagers,andpublicmeetings,ask-

ing people to report suspicious people and

vehicles, share ideas and utilise resources.

Operations are also conducted on a weekly

    basis, the station said.

But Tony Cross, member and techni-

cal advisor for the Somerset West

Neighbourhood Watch, says it is diffi-

    cult toknowexactlywhat thepoliceare

    doingabout thesituationsince theyare

    not sharing their strategy.

The situation can only be improved

if police work closely with the various

parties involved in the fight against

crime, says Cross. The problem per-

sists and police cannot solve it alone.

In response to thewaveof armed rob-

    beries, the Somerset West Neighbour-

    hoodWatch formedaCBDWatchabout

a week ago, says Cross. Their aim is to

harness their eyes and ears to prevent

    crime.Around 70 business people have

already joined the initiative. While it will not

stop crime on its own, it adds another layer

    of security, says Cross.

Four private security companies have joined

in a community security partnership with the

neighbourhood watch and some of their patrol

vehicles are being stationed in the CBD.

    HughRoe, chairpersonof theCommunityPo-

lice Forum (CPF) and operations manager at

    HelderbergCrimeWatch(HCW),reckonsthat

police visibility has increased since the spike

and that it is comforting to see more vehi-

cles and uniforms in the CBD.

Helderberg Crime Watch has also stepped

up its visibility in the CBD by increasing foot

and vehicle patrols, as well as having some-

one onamotorbike patrolling the area during

the day from 07:00 to 19:00.

    Residents vowtoweld

    crime gateway shut

    JAMEY GORDON

    Residents of Westridge in

    Somerset West are threa-

    tening toweld close a gate

    next to the railway, as

    they believe it exposes

    them to crime.

    According to Lance Ens-

    lin, a resident of Arum

    Street and member of the

    Westridge Neighbourhood

Watch, the gate at the end of

    thepalisade fenceon thecor-

ner of South and East Ave-

    nues serves as an access

    point formaintenance along

    the railway. However, be-

cause the gate is not kept un-

    derlockandkeyandoftenre-

    mainsopen,Enslinfeels that

    criminals have easy access

into and out of the quiet

    neighbourhood.

    Another resident who

    lives in South Avenue, who

    prefers to remain anony-

mous, says he and his family,

    like many other residents in

the area, have fallen prey to

    burglaries twice in the last

few years. He says the escape

    route for many criminals

    who target homes in the

    neighbourhood is either

through the gate or over the

fence. He says he has wit-

nessed a couple of these get-

    aways.

In a recent robbery at one

of the residences, I saw one of

the culprits make off with a

    laptop by jumping the fence

    and running in the direction

    of the Somerset West train

    station, says the resident.

    Another issue of concern

raised by the resident is the

    overgrown grass and weeds

on the open area next to the

    railway. The resident says

    thatbesidesbeinganeyesore,

    the overgrowth serves as the

    perfecthidingplaceforcrimi-

    nals.

    Ithasbeenquiteastruggle

to get the fence up and now

I feel that it has no purpose.

We as residents and rate- and

taxpayers want the gate to be

    kept closed permanently and

    effectively, says Enslin,

    Otherwise well weld it

    shut.

    Enslin says he has made

    numerous calls to Metrorail,

    the local municipality and

    even the police to communi-

    cate theproblemandhopeful-

ly find a solution, but to no

    avail.

    According to Riana Scott,

    spokesperson for Metrorail,

    the gate provides access to

    their service road and opera-

    tional tunnel for mainte-

    nance and repairs, and there-

    fore closing it off permanent-

ly is not an option. Scott says

    they will, however, provide a

sturdier lock to keep the gate

    closed.

    Given that fencing prima-

    rily demarcates railway

    boundaries,afencewouldnot

    deter wilful entry onto the

    rail reserve by persons with

    criminal intent, says Scott.

    She explains that they do

    their utmost to expedite the

    replacement of fencing.

    Scott claims this fence is

    sufficient to fulfil itspurpose,

    which is to demarcate the

    boundary. The repair and re-

    placement of fences across

    the Western Cape is priori-

    tisedandplannedannuallyin

    terms of necessity and imple-

    mented according to availa-

    ble funding.

    She adds that any mainte-

    nance and clearance of rub-

    ble or weeds is primarily

    aimed at keeping the railway

tracks clear and safe for rail

    operations. An on-site in-

    spectiononFridayconfirmed

that the tracks are safe for op-

    eration. The weeds will be

    sprayed and grass cut during

    our normal clean-up cycle.

    She explains that the clean-

    upcycledependsonavailable

    funding and favourable

    weather conditions. There

    are therefore no fixed times

    or dates for these clean-ups.

    Thesearebutsomeof thechallenges

    The residents, directly affected by

the SA National Roads Agency Limit-

    eds (Sanral) forced evictions inAsan-

da Village on 2 and 3 June, have been

living in the community hall for the

    past three months.

    According to Ward 85 Councillor

    MbuyiseloMatha,morethan800evict-

Of these, about 400 have already been

relocated to newly erected homes on

    theSanral-ownedlandtheywereevict-

    ed from initially.

    However, Councillor Siyabulela

Mamkeli, the City of Cape Towns

    Mayoral Committee Member for Hu-

man Settlements, says that 30 people

were moved into their new homes.

Mamkeli also says that there are

over 300 additional people who have

moved into the Nomzamo hall due to

    the recent flooding, and therefore

there are just over 800 people still liv-

    ing in the hall.

But whilst some evictees have relo-

cated to their new homes, some resi-

dents hopes of being settled have not

    been realised.

Bernadine Olivier (28) and her sev-

    en-year-oldsonareamongthefamilies

who have been residing in the hall

    since the untimely evictions. Olivier

    regards thesituationashellandone

she would not wish upon anyone.

She says theworst is that they have

no privacy. You constantly have peo-

ple around you. Even when using the

of thisOlivier says: When food ispro-

vided, there is not enough. When we

    itself.

husband and two children (aged five

    and ninemonths respectively), are al-

problem is that they often have to go

    number of people it accommodates

her children get sick easily. She says

she often wakes up with a sore body

because she and her family have to

share a mattress and have to use the

mose adds that washing and hanging

their clothes at the hall is also a mis-

    sion.

It would be better to sleep under a

bridge, than to live in these condi-

    tions, says Tomose.

According to Mamkeli, the cost of

    cleaning andmaintenance of the com-

On average R960 is spent on refuse

tion, the laying and drying of the con-

    849 homes.

According to Matha, thus far 400

homes have been erected and he was

informed that a further 80 homes

    would also be built.

Whether a total of 234 or 849 homes

will be erected for the evictees, will be

confirmed as part of the inquiry into

    the Lwandle evictions, says Matha.

Another issue to formpart of the in-

quiry is the fact thatmost residentsdo

    not have any furniture.

creased over a period of time,

    which could largely be attribu-

    ted to Strand Neighbourhood

    Watchs efforts to reduce crime

    in the area.

    . The community was flood-

    ed with this incorrect informa-

tion, which was not only placed

on the front page of the District-

Mail, but also displayed on al-

    most each and every lamppost

    in the Helderberg. The article

had a serious negative and hor-

    rifyingeffectonthecommunity.

    SNW was inundated with en-

quiries from the public and it

    was clear that the community,

    and especially our senior citi-

    zens, experienced ahigh level of

fear. The article made all the

    goodworkrenderedbySNWun-

    done. The trust relationship be-

    tween the community and SNW

    sufferedseriousdamageandthe

    community cannot understand

how it is possible that there

    were 90 carbreak-insduring the

    same period the SNW launched

    a crime prevention operation.

    . Themost alarming and dis-

    appointingaspect is thattheDis-

    trictMail did nothing to rectify

    the situationafterSNWbrought

    this matter under their atten-

tion, but only offered a vague,

    meaninglessandplatitudinous/

lame excuse after a letter was

    published in theDistrictMail on

14 August 2014 by the SAPS

    Strand under the heading, Ar-

    ticle about SAP Strandmakes it

    difficult to fight crime.

    SNW strongly objects against

    the publication of unverified

    crimerelatedfactsanddemands

    that the DistrictMail rectify the

    situation and set the record

    straight by offering their apolo-

gy to the public and SNW.

    We demand that the District-

    Mailplace emphasis on thevital

    andimportantrolewhichneigh-

    bourhood watches and in this

    specific matter, the Strand

    Neighbourhood Watch, play in

the prevention of crime in their

    various residential areas in col-

    laboration with SAPS.

    We demand further that the

    DistrictMail acknowledge the

important role of SNW in their

    relentless sacrifices and en-

    deavourstomakeourcommuni-

    WE sincerely apologise to the

    Strand NeighbourhoodWatch

    andour readers for the inaccu-

    racies contained in the front

    page article Crime wave hits

    Helderberg (10 April 2014).

    The journalist wrote the arti-

    cleafterhercarhadbeenbroken

into and a police officer told her

that he had processed 90 cases

    of carbreak-ins thatFriday (Fri-

    day 4 April).

    The journalist did not inform

the officer that she was a jour-

nalist and that she would be us-

ing his statement in an article.

She asked the Strand Police Sta-

    tions spokesperson to confirm

the number of incidents on the

night of 4 April, but the spokes-

    person said that the stationmay

    notgiveoutstatistics,as these

are released once a year by the

    national minister.

    Wewere wrong to present the

information as fact in the ab-

    sence of official verification.

    The information should have

    been officially verified, or not

    committed to print.

    We apologise sincerely to the

    Strandpolice, theStrandNeigh-

    of this unverified information.

    We apologise, too, for the

length of time it has taken to get

    to this point.

    We should have apologised

    andcorrected therecordas soon

as we had dealt with the com-

    plaint.

We will be focusing in an up-

    done by the Strand Neighbour-
