ETHEKWINI Municipality em-ployees are rejecting the city’soffer to pay them three years of

backpay,asopposedtot theirdemandof seven years.

This follows a court ruling in theirfavour. Workers, all belonging to theSouth African Municipal WorkersUnion (Samwu), havenowgiven theirunion a mandate to “bring the city toits knees” with an all out strike.

Meetings were held last Wednes-daywhereitwasdecidedthatmassac-tionwill commenceonMonday,5May- just two days before the elections.

Samwu’s deputy secretary of theeThekwini region Pretty Shange saidthey plan to take action unless thecouncil meets their demand of sevenyears’ back pay.

Workers want the municipality toabideby theSupremeCourt ofAppealrulinghandeddowninSeptemberlastyearwhich reversed the conditions of

a service agreement implemented bythe city in 2007, and ordered it to payback affected employees. Servicesthat couldbedisrupted include refusecollection, street sweeping, seweragemaintenance and traffic control.

President of the Independent Mu-nicipalandAlliedTradeUnion(Imatu)Stanley Khoza said, while they alsohadnotacceptedtheoffer, theyhadnoplans strike, “as there is still room fornegotiation”.

In2007eThekwiniintroducednewuniform service agreements for em-ployeesaspartofaplantounifytheen-titiesunder thenewlycreatedcouncil.

The unions objected to the serviceagreementsandtook thematter to theLabour Court and won. The city tookthe decision to the Supreme Court ofAppeal and lost in September.

In October, city manager S’bu Sit-hole establisheda technical task teamto quantify the financial implicationsfor the municipality.

Areportbythetaskteamestimated

that the city would have to pay staffmore than R185 million in back pay.

However, staff who benefited fromthe2007agreementwouldhavetopayback R233 million to the city if thecourt orderwasstrictly implemented.

In awritten proposal to the unionslast week,eThekwinisaiditwouldnotgo after money owed to it by employ-ees.However, it said itwould only payback affected employees for threeyears based on the Prescription Act.

In terms of the act, claims for debtexpires if no attempt to collect it hasbeen made within three years. How-ever, Samwu rejected the proposal onthe basis that the city was the one totake the Labour Court decision on ap-pealandallowedthematter todragonfor seven years.

Municipal spokesman Thabo Mo-fokeng, said, “[Talks with unions] areongoing. I am not at liberty to discussthe details of our discussions, save tosay that we are at the stage where weare engaging with all stakeholders.”

YOUREarthSolutionsmanagingdirector Kerry Dell presentedthe realities of global warming

at Hirsch’s Ballito last Thursday.Dell said climate change is hap-

peningrapidly,andifmitigationmea-sures are not enforced, results couldbe ‘catastrophic’.

She said there is now conclusivescientific evidence that the planet isexperiencingclimatechange, withnoorganisations disputing this.

“This planet is going to survivewith orwithout us.Wehave to do ourbittomakesurewedosurvivewithit,”saidDell. Sheexplainedclimatestud-iesshowmoreorhigherglobalairandsea temperatures, sea levels, oceanacidification, hurricanes, drought (insome places), rain (in some places),floods and heat waves. There is lesssnow, Arctic ice and mountain gla-ciers.

The average sea level worldwidehas already risen four to eight inchesin the past 100 years and is expectedto rise another four to 35 inches by2100.

Theprimary reason for this is thatwater expandsas itwarms,whichal-so causes more tropical storms. Therise is also caused by melting of gla-ciers.

“In South Africa, we have to beconcerned about more intense tropi-cal cyclones. We saw this in Durbanin 2007 and2011. The potablewaterdemandisalsoexpectedtobeexceed-edby2030–notsofaraway,”shesaid.The carbon emissions from burningfossil fuels is causing globalwarmingbecause it is thickening the atmo-spheric layer.

Africa is already witnessing im-pacts of climate change, which willworsenifactionisnot taken, shesaid.

Itwillresultinconstrainedagricul-tural production and an increase infood insecurity, water stress andwa-

ter conflicts, energy constraints im-peding development, expandingrangeandprevalenceofvector-bornediseases (malaria, cholera, yellow fe-ver, rift valley fever), rising sea levelimpacting livelihoods in coastal ar-eas, lossofbiodiversity, lossof forestsand other natural habitats.

Another problem is the highamount of pollution. Dell said everypiece of plastic ever made is still‘somewhere’ on the planet, as it can-not be destroyed.

On theupside,Dell saidmanysus-tainable,environmentallyfriendlyal-ternatives are being implemented

Management, EnvironmentalAwareness, Analyzing Carbon Foot-prints and Comparisons on sustain-able product solutions. She workedfor a corporate company for yearsand eventually decided she couldmakemore impact if shewent on herown. “My company was born out ofa passion for making a difference. Iam passionate about our planet, ourwildlife and our quality of life – it’swhat drives me,” said Dell.

She isalso involvedwithaproductcalled Centron Energy that reducescarbonemissions inall vehiclesby50per cent.

EVERY woman I have come to know and/or loveis being, or has been, abused or mistreated inone way or the other. I often feel helpless as

they confide in me about how often it is people closeto them (as is sadly often the case) who inflict thisdiscomfort in their lives.Sindisiwe

Sindisiwe is very dear to me. She is a very smartwoman who has great ambitions and is as individualas they come. She met a man who made her happy, and the relationship blossomed to the point thathe popped the big question. Needless to say Sindisiwe was overjoyed by the proposal. It was a welcomerelief from all the things that had happened in herlife. She had lost her mother to dementia when shewas young. She was thrust into her father’s family whom she barely knew. You see, her father was notone to be anchored to one wife, and as a result Sindyhas a number of sisters and brothers who I can hardlykeep a track of. Some time after her mother died, she experienced abuse in the form of neglect, untilat one point she found herself alone with her littlebrother. But this was all in the past now and herfuture looked skyblue. Her fiancé, being an established businessman, got approval from the family. He even built her a house and showered her withgifts. She then found out that he was seeingsomeone else and she broke up with him. Seekingcomfort from her family, she instead was accusedof being gay and ungrateful by her family. She today“owes” the man around R40 000 in lobola.

LeratoLerato is an angelic human being, and has an ef

fect on people that makes you love her. This is theaura she radiated at church and was considered amodel young lady. Her family was proud of her,and so was I. Lerato got pregnant out of wedlock, and this was undoubtedly looked down upon by thechurch. I was saddened to hear from her the otherday that the father of her child accused her of beingunfaithful when she was 10 minutes late after work. She was further humiliated when he prevented herfrom going home and instead dragged her by herneck, in full view of her neighbours and friends,to his house. He kept her against her will, tellingher she wasn’t leaving without admitting that shewas cheating. She now lives in fear as this man waitsfor her when she leaves for work and when she returns. He refuses to accept they have broken up.

ThembekaThembeka was born with a fairly common disor

der of her olfactory system which meant she couldnot smell or taste. Her family didn't believe heruntil a fire nearly killed her because she could notsmell the smoke. She is special in that she can tasteby colour and judges the tastiness of her food by thepresentation. Her father was a known cheat andoften physically abused her mother. Her uncle wasalways strange towards her and she sought refugein her father. He watched her being raped as he wasdriving the car with his daughter and rapist brotherin the back seat. I cannot begin to imagine whatthat does to the mind of a 12yearold girl. She toldme as I started writing this that her fatherhad recently assaulted her and that she had bruisesall over her body. These stories are true (the nameshave been changed) and sadly there's many more.I am sometimes ashamed to be a man, as the peoplewho have, and continue to, commit these atrocities, are men. It is blatantly obvious that the solutionto this scourge lies with us, men who have friendswho need to be stood up to, and women who needto be defended instead of turning a blind eye. It isimperative that we realise that it really begins withus. We are just as evil as the perpetrators if we areonly the audience. Bad things endure when goodpeople do nothing.

THE president of the AfricanChristian Democratic Party(ACDP) and long standing

member of parliament, Dr KennethMeshoe briefed local party support-ersatapublicmeetingheldonlastFri-day at the Lighthouse Family Churchin Ballito.

Accompanying Meshoe was thedeputy president of the ACDP, Coun-cillorWayne Thring andmanymem-bers of the KZN provincial executivecommittee.

Local ACDP branches invited Me-shoebecausehe is regardedasoneofthestrongestandforthrightChristianvoices in the nation.

Meshoe informed thecrowdnot tomakethemistakeofthinkingthatvot-ing for a small party will be a wastedvote, but highlighted the importanceof making their vote count in the up-coming elections. He stressed thatwhat South Africa needs is not astrong opposition party, but rather a“strong godly government”. He em-phasised that this is the only solution

that can bring change to the state ofthe nation. Meshoe also said that theACDP is fast growing as many arechoosing to support the principles ofintegrity, reconciliation, righteous-ness and family values that the partyhas been built on.

He assured his supporters thatsoon the ACDPwill no longer be con-sidered to be a small party.

“I havemet with the leadership ofthe Shembe Church, one of the big-gest churches with over six millionfollowers. They are tired of voting fora corrupt government.

“They told me that they want tovote for godly government and wantto support the ACDP. In Lesotho thepeople are saying that the presentgovernment has undermined their

values. They are turning their votesfrom ANC to ACDP.”

Meshoe shared with excitementhis expectation of the party increas-ing its impact by securingmore seatsin National Parliament.

“People will be surprised withwhat isgoing tohappened in thisnextelections,” he stated.

The party currently holds threeseats in National Parliament and ishopeful that thiswill increase follow-ing the 7 May elections.

He motivated local supporters tocontinue to grow the party.

The ACDP in KwaDukuza boasts10officialbrancheswithinthemunic-ipality, with more branches expectedto be launched in the near future.

Speaking at the event, local ACDPcouncillor, Pastor Nel Sewraj said,“For the first time in thehistory of ourdemocracy, theACDPwonitsfirstseatin KwaDukuza Municipality. Manythanksgo toallACDPcandidates, vot-ers and supporters.”

FOLLOWING two hugely success-ful years, the award-winningTop Gear Festival is bolstering

its teamtoensure it delivers onehell ofan event for the third part of its trilogyin Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal.

In a bid to create the best street cir-cuit yet, popular and respectedmotor-ingmedia personality,Marius Robertshas joined the Top Gear Festival Dur-ban teambringingwithhim theprom-ise of more motortainment than be-fore.

The bar is set high for the local self-proclaimed petrol head as previousTop Gear Festivals have seen the likesof Formula 1 stars and cars includingtwo-time World Drivers' ChampionMika Häkkinen, four-timeWorld Con-structors' Champions Infiniti Red BullRacing and their successful RB7 car,not to mention current title leadersMercedes AMG Petronas all take partin the motoring extravaganza.

Thelistofmotoringtalentcontinueswith legendary F1 driver DavidCoulthard and Queen of the Nürburg-ringSabineSchmitzwhohavealltakenaturnonthestreetcircuitineverythingfrom F1 and classic cars to more ab-surd vehicles such as tuk tuks and tax-is.

Roberts said of his appointment: "Iam a huge fan of Top Gear, a huge fanof cars and a huge fan of Durban, sowhen I got the call regarding the posi-tion of content manager for the TopGear Festival 2014 in Durbs, I didn'thave to give it much thought.

“Iplan tocombine thesepassions toput together thebest festival content todate.

“I'mnot saying it's going to be easy, after all, the festival has been incredi-bly successful over the past two years, but I am up for the challenge."

As anchor-presenter on SouthAfri-ca's first motoring channel, IgnitionTV,since2008andracingcompetitive-ly for the past four years in a variety ofrace series, Roberts has extensiveknowledge of the motoring industrywithin South Africa.

Combining this with his plans forthe festival, Roberts has already put inplace a new, enhanced and city-ap-provedDurban street circuit for 2014.

The new layout has additional ben-efits including taking the street circuitaction closer to spectators.

With the circuit looping back on it-selfalongBatteryRoad,thenewgrand-stand positions create a stadium feelaround the street circuit, allowingTopGear fans to get even more bang fortheir buck.

From the moment the sun rises onthe 21 and 22 June to the time the sunsets, therewillbenon-stopactionrightin front of them.

On track there is plenty for specta-tors to get excited about with morecompetitive racing action. The newestandmostexcitingactiontakestheformofanewtimeattackinvitational,where30 of South Africa's bravest drivers

take each other on in 30 of South Afri-ca's fastest cars. This high-octane en-tertainment is bound to have fans onthe edge of their seats this June.

In addition The Stig will be un-leashed in a variety of cars as he com-pletes power laps synonymous withtheTopGear televisionshows -alwaysa favourite with the crowds.

Expect a nail-biting, jaw droppingspectacle as the Porsche and Ferrari

drivers provide prize winners withtheir own doseof rip-roaringaction intrue Top Gear style.

Visitors are encouraged to bookearly to avoid missing out on the mostexciting event on this year's entertain-ment and motoring calendar.

THE inaugural Four Elements OceanChallenge, where a small field of in-trepid athletes will swim seven kilo-metres along Durban’s iconic beach-front between Blue Lagoon and thenorthern Harbour Wall, takes placeon Saturday 3 May.

Theevent isbeingheldby thenon-profit company Four Elements Con-servation in honour of World OceansDay (8 June), and is aimed at raisingawareness and funds for the preser-vation of the ocean environment.

The gruelling ocean swim -whereall participants have been hand-se-lected to include Olympic, EnglishChannel, and other world–rankeddistance swimmers - is to be the focal

point of a fiveminute film thatwill bereleasedaspartoftheofficialcelebra-tions of the UN-designated WorldOceans Day celebrations on 8June.

FourElementsConservationNPCis the brainchild of young DurbanGirls College pupil Olivia Taylor (17),whose passion for the natural envi-ronment moved her to form the or-ganisation in 2012.

“Our objective is to support, com-municate and promote environmen-tal activities, including theprotection

and preservation of endangered, threatened or suffering creatures,”saidTaylor. “Humanity is threatenedbymass indifference, andwewant tohave a positive effect on our environ-mentbymobilisingpeopleandinspir-ing them to uphold our principle of‘Dive Deeper, Aim Higher, Fly Fur-ther”.

Otto Thaning, awell known SouthAfrican distance swimmer who hasswumtheEnglishChannel andStraitof Gibraltar, said,“Four Elements

NPC and the Ocean Challenge is a re-markable conservation concept.

“A concept that is often promotedat school and university graduationceremoniesextolsandencouragesef-forts to leave a better world for ourchildren. “Ihavealways thought thatwhatwe should be aiming for is leav-ing better children to look after ourworld, andFourElements is the epit-ome of such a philosophy,” addedThaning Speaking about the organi-sation, Taylor said, “The name ‘Four

Elements’ is inspired by Aristotle’soriginaltheoryoftheelements:water, earth, air and fire. For each element,a symbolic animal has been chosen, with the dire plight of sharks, rhino’sandbearded vultures representedbywater, earth and air.

“Arguably the most important ofthe elements is ‘fire’, which calls onthose of us with a burning passion tostand up for what you believe in andlet your voice be heard.

“Assuch, weendeavour toprovidea platform and advice for other like-mindedpeople(especiallyyoungpeo-ple), so that they too can have thecourage to light their own fires.”

All funds raised by Four ElementsConservation will be directly chan-nelled into the selected local marineenvironmental activities.
