THE Environmental ImpactAssessment (EIA) report willbe going ahead for a proposed

desalination plant in La Mercy.Thiswasrevealedatapublicmeet-

ing held by CSIR, the facilitatingcompany sourced by Umgeni Watertodecideifadesalinationplantwouldbe feasible and environmentallysafe to solve the water crisis in thenorth.

Ameeting was previously held on8October,2014 when the communi-

ty asked CSIR and Umgeni Water tohalt all forms of a desalination.

However, Monday’s meeting waspoorly attended with fewer than 20members from Tongaat and sur-rounding areas attending, despitethe event being advertised in localnewspapers, the library and othervarious means of notification.

Themeetingwasoffsetbyenviron-mental activistAndishaMaharajwhosaid objections had already beenmadeasking for theplant proposal tobe halted.

“What happened to our previous

objections? We were all quite vehe-ment at the previous meeting sayingwedonotwantthedesalinationplant.

“Why is this meeting continuing ifthis is the case?Youhavebeenreject-edbythecommunity.Whatistheneedfor this?”

Maharaj was thereafter told by afacilitator that while her objectionswere noted, CSIR’s only functionwasto communicate with the communityand assess the scientific impact of adesalination plant.

AFTER monthsofsittingonthefence the R1.4 billion BallitoJunction regional shopping

centre development has been giventhego-aheadbytheKwaDukuzaMu-nicipality (KDM).

Themunicipality, onWednesday,approved theSiteDevelopmentPlan(SDP) for the 65,000m2 mega mallproject being led by the MenlynMaine and Flanagan and Gerardconsortium.

According to plans the existingBallito Junction will be extended bymore than six times its current sizeintoaworld-class regional shopping

destinationattheentrancetoBallito.Construction on Ballito Junction,

which is located at the entrance ofBallito, between thebusyN2andM4highways, is anticipated to takeabout 24 months.

Thenewmall isscheduledtoopenin the first quarter of 2017.

The new Ballito Junction will behometo the town’s first cinemacom-plex, in addition to boasting greatfamily entertainment, a hugely ex-panded fashion offering for the re-gion and an excitingmix of food out-lets.

SpeakingtotheWeekly,mayorRi-cardoMthembu said themallwill bea “draw card” for the KwaDukuzaMunicipality.

“Wearealreadya tourist destina-tion of choice for people from SouthAfrica and abroad.

“This new mall which, I am surewill rival many regional malls, willmeangrowthforusasamunicipalityandasacommunity.Wewillhaveac-cess to so much more than we donow, even our own cinema.

“It is about time KwaDukuza isseen as the place to be. I am happyabout this development and cannot

wait to see how it turns out.”DeveloperMenlynMainedirector

Carl Jankowitz, welcomed the an-nouncement saying it was a signifi-cant milestone for the development– one the biggest property invest-ments currently in the area.

“The KwaDukuza Municipalityrecognises our commitment and thevalue thismajor investment is goingto have on the region.

“It is going to take the shopping,entertainment and leisure offeringon theNorth Coast region to awholenew level, with the new megamall set to become the hotspotin Ballito both for locals andtourists.”

“It will boast a considerable en-tertainment and leisure component,anchored by a Nu Metro cinemacomplex and trendy restaurants.

“This, togetherwithaworld-classretailmixof topSAandinternationalfashion outlets and major depart-ment stores, will set the new BallitoJunction apart in the region,” headds.

Jankowitz also said that at R1.4billion, this is a massive investmentnot just in Ballito, but KZN as awhole.

“While our initial investment willtake themall to 65,000m2, develop-ment rights that exist on the site al-low for the centre to be further ex-panded to90,000m2– that’s “super-regional” shopping centre status.”

According to developers theexistingcentrewillcontinuetotrade,largely unaffected by constructionactivities.

However, the centrewill undergoadegreeofmodernisation,soastotiein to the expansion.

Current anchor tenant Pick nPay will be expanded, and other ex-isting tenants like Dis-Chem, will bejoined by an array of departmentstores.

Illustrating demand and how up-beat national and international re-tailers are about the development,Flanagan saysmore than80%of thespace is already let.

“It’s more than two years beforethe new Ballito Junction regionalmall is scheduled to open, and wehave already secured several majorretail brands.

Woolworths, Game, Edgars, Fos-chini, Truworths, Jet, Queenspark,Markham, Identity, Total Sports,Clicks, Incredible Connection, CapeUnionMart andCoricraft areamongtheretailersalreadysigneduptojoinPick n Pay and Dis-Chem at BallitoJunction,” he said.

“To be frank folks, we have a very major watershortage at this end of the world. eThekwini currently loses a lot of water due to leaks and illegal connections. We have also seen a projection of how thingswill go and it does not look good.”

Tongaat Civic Association chairperson JeevaPillay replied to Struton saying it was good thateThekwini were taking precautionary measures, butsaid desalination may not be the best option.

“I think it is important to know that whiledesalination is an option and the only one CSIR canbring forward to us, we should all look at all otheroptions, because with the shortfall projected thisplant will not be able to maintain the shortfall eitherway.”

Umgeni Water manager of planning services andproject manager for the desalination plant KevinMeier said that Umgeni Water supplied KwaZuluNatal with 1 203 mega litres (ML) of water every dayand could only produce 1156Ml. He also said adrought was imminent.

“We expect a drought every 10 years and we havenot had one for 15. We have looked at many differentalternatives, but this is the most viable solution.”

Community members again argued that despitethe meeting not being in the correct forum, other options needed to be taken into consideration.

TEACHERS at a local rural schoolhave halted work saying they willnot teach until the "pathetic con

ditions" of the school are attended to.On Monday, 9 March Cottonlands

Primary teachers did not leave their administrative block protesting the poorworking conditions.

Someofthemainconcernsincludeda demand for extra classes and teachers due to overcrowding.

School maintenance remained highon the list of issues with dilapidatedclassrooms and unhygienic toilets"makingitdifficultforbothteacherandpupil to concentrate".

Teachers also showed the Weeklythetoiletsthatwereconvertedtoclassrooms for HOD offices. They also notedthat the livestock farm next to theschool was a hygiene issue.

A teacher, who did not want to benamed, that led the protest action saidhe was disappointed with the way thedepartment was treating the school.

"To them we are second best. Weare not even that. This school is in direneed of assistance from our managersand leaders yet they refuse to acknowledge the situation we are in. Our toiletsare pathetic, our kids are suffering. Weneed help here and we will not teachuntil we get the help that we need."

Another irate teacher said she was

tired of excuses from her superiors."The livestock situation alone is

enough to give you a hard time. You cansmell it and it is disgusting. We need toeducate children. And to do that wemust be in a school that gives us someform of dignity."

While observing conditions of theschool, the Weekly noted overcrowdingand certain safety aspects at theschool. Many classrooms had collapsing ceilings and at times even beamswere a safety hazard. One classroomhad a fluorescent light hanging fromthe broken ceiling above a pupil’s head.

The leader of the protest said “it hasbecome too much for all of us here".

"While we are here primarily for thechildren, the conditions in which wework under are also quite a strain for usas human beings. There are manythings said in our Constitution aboutfree education and the dignity ofpeople, but the truth is we are beingtreated badly.

"The men and women have toshare a toilet after the male toiletsstopped working."

When the Weekly examined themale toilet, we were met with a numberflies and a foul smelling stench.

The acting SEM for the Pinetowndistrict, Mr S.A. Chetty, had not commented at time of going to press.

A HOUSEBREAKING suspect was arrested

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) headPrem Balram said their operation centre inPhoenix received a tip-off of a housebreakingin progress at business premises on Sundayafternoon.

“Officers proceeded to the scene and sur-rounded the motor vehicle repair shop andnoticed that forced entry was gained via a

rear window.”Balram said that officers believed the

suspect to be still inside premises and calledfor back-up.

More officers then responded and the en-tire premises was searched.

A male suspect was found hiding inside astack of eight bakkie tyres and was arrested

said Balram.He added that upon questioning the

suspect it was established that he was aresident of Mount Royale and had enteredthe Phoenix area with intent to commitcrimes.

He was handed over to the South AfricanPolice Service.

TWOwomanescapedwithminor injuriesafterthe vehicle they were travelling in overturneddown a flight of stairs on Saturday, 7 March.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa),Prem Balram said the Rusa operations centrereceived several calls from Mount View resi-dents seeking assistance after noticing a vehi-cle that was reversing, overturned and landagainst a home.

“Callers stated that two woman weretrapped in the car.” Balram said officers andparamedicsweresenttothesceneanduponar-rival at the corner of Antelope Place and Katz-kopDrive foundawhitemotor vehicle lying onits roof.

“The two occupants had freed themselves

and had suffered minor injuries.”Balram said that upon interviewing the

driver,whowas aWestville resident, it was es-tablished that shewas reversingher car, aNis-sanlightmotorvehiclewhenshedroveoverthekerb and down a flight of stairs before the caroverturned and came to rest on the roof.

“Her passenger, a Verulam resident,was slightly injured on her head,” saidBal-ram

He said that the car had not landed againsta home as initially reported, but had landedagainst a pole holding up an awning, aroundthree metres from a house.

Balramsaid that thevehicle landedonadogkennel and had narrowly missed killing twodogsthatwereonarunningchainafewmetresaway.

AYOUNGwomanwhoseeminglyhadtheworld at her feet died after being in-volvedinacaraccidentattheweekend.

Twenty-four-year-old civil engineer Kavi-shaParboodiedinVerulamonSaturdaynightwhen a car she was travelling in overturnedand landed in a river. She was transported tohospital where she later passed away.

Speaking to the Weekly her uncle BobbyRajkumar said family members were strug-gling to come to terms with the loss.

“She was a very unique, loving child whodidnot causeharm toanyoneor anything shecame into contact with.

“As a family, it has become increasinglyhard for us to cope during this time. We justcannot believe this hashappened. Shewas so

young and had so much going for her.”Kavishawasratedoneof the topengineers

in the province and had been working in Jo-hannesburg for just over a year.

“Shewas actually down on businesswhenthis happened. She was so bubbly and hum-ble. She was always cheery and brought lifeto everything around her.”

According to Reaction Unit South Africa(Rusa) head Prem Balram, paramedicsracedtothesceneandfoundavehiclethat hadveered off the road and overturned in a river.

“Iwasstoppedbyamotoristwhoinformedhim thathenoticeda car veeroff the roadandpossibly overturned.

“I immediately dispatched Reaction offi-cers and paramedics to the area on the Oak-ford Priory Road and upon arrival found thatacrowdhadgatheredontheroadoverlooking

a river.”Balram said that paramedics and

officers walked around 100 metresthrough a bush and found a greenToyota Corolla lying on its roof inthe water.

“The driver, a 21-year-oldman, was found outside the ve-hicle.”

Balram added that para-medics then freed the womanwhose head was kept abovewater while removing herfrom the vehicle.

“She was driven to herhomebyher 21-year-old broth-er to switch on the lights at herfamily’s New Glasgow homeand they were returning to theVerulamCBDwhen the driv-er attempted to avoid adog on the main road,”said Balram.

According to Nzimbomvu, theproject itself created almost 30 jobs

for the area.“This is also another positive im-

Ednick Msweli, newly appointedhead of eThekwini Water and Sani-tation (EWS), confirmed this weekthat the twomulti-million rand con-tracts that make up a portion of theNorthern Aqueduct Augmentation(NAA)areexpectedtobecomplete inthe fourth quarter this year.

This includesa6kmsectionof thepipeline that begins at Duffs Roadand ends at the Phoenix 2 reservoirand a 22 kmsegment of the pipeline

that stretches from the Phoenix 2Reservoir in Phoenix, continues toWaterlooandthentoUmhlangawitha feed to theplannednewBlackburnreservoir.

The current Northern Aqueducthasreachedcapacityonvarioussec-tions of the trunk mains as a resultof growth indemand.As a result, al-though there is sufficient water tomeet current needs, there is not suf-ficient capacity to deliver it to areasthatneeditmost.ConstructionoftheNAA will resolve this.

Msweli said that the NAA, whichcomprises seven individual pro-jects, would not be constructed inlinear fashion. Segments in areas ofcriticalneedwill beput inplace first.

He confirmed that, by the end oftheyear, thepipeline to theWaterlooReservoir would be complete.

Today, Celrose has an open-doorpolicyforme.Friends,IneverthoughtI would be diagnosed with cancer, infact I hadnoknowledgeof thisdread-eddiseasewhich, like Satan, decidedto steal, rob and kill me.

WithGodbymysideandall of you,I fought the disease and destroyedcancer.Todayit’snotaboutme,butallthose who have cancer and otherdreaded diseases and have given uphope.

Weneed touplift those souls by in-stilling inthemfaithandstrengththatthey can become more than over-comers if they only believe, that noweapon formedagainst themwill ev-er prosper. And it has nothing to dowith religion.

THIS year’s State of the Nation Address(Sona) definitely did not disappoint in providing free circus entertainment for millions of South Africans and the world.

The event gave birth to a hashtag thatstarted trending worldwide and South Africa became that country airing its dirty linen in public.

It started offline when it was aboutfashionchoicesandtrendsandtweets,thisshowed the lighthearted side of South African politics.

If we are to succeed as a nation we needto start believing in the power of humanagency. We need to resurrect the idea thatthe choices we make, and the actions wetake, matter.

It is true that the uneven legacy of theapartheid system weighs heavy on us. It isa fact that black children still do not havethe same opportunities as white children.This is a human tragedy that nobody in thisbeloved country of ours should accept.Much has been done to redress the past,make no mistake, but the blame game hasto stop now.

Life in South Africa today is certainlybetter than it was during apartheid but weneed to hold ourselves to a much higherstandard than that. We need to become

the nation that President Nelson Mandelahelped us believe we could become, a placeof hope, prosperity, selfless leadership andmutual respect.

And so the honest question we mustask ourselves today as patriotic South African citizens is, what is holding us back fromachieving Madiba’s vision?

Wecanblameapartheid.Wecanblamethe global financial system. We can blameglobal warming. We can even blame Janvan Riebeeck.

But in our hearts we know what thebottom truth and the problem is we have

lice officers physically removing elected officials from the National Assembly andliterally seeing blood on the floor ofParliament.

How do you justify countrywide, rollingblackouts, planning our lives around loadshedding schedules, and relying on torches, gas and candles in the modern era taking us back to the Stone Age?

How do you not condemn the very obvious dismantling of the country’s crime andcorruption fighting institutions? SARS, theHawks, the NPA, the SIU, the SAPS are allriddled with problems and have lost thefaith of the public

How do you rationalise the decision bythe ANC to effectively ban all foreigners

from owning land in this country and repelling muchneeded foreign investment?

Every time a cop is arrested, or a tenderis irregularly awarded or another dismissalgoes to court it erodes my case against thecritics.

ButIamstillgoingtodefendSouthAfrica. I refuse to stand on the sidelines andlaugh or despair.

We have allowed one powerful manto get away with too much for too long.This man here in our presence today hasbeen ordained as ‘mighty president the untouchable’. South Africa, enough isenough.

Let’s think deeply about the choices wemake and let’s not make history repeat it

self.Voter education is now detrimental

more than ever starting from municipal toprovincial level and then national level. Letus uproot this chaff before it even simmersdown to the future of our children and thegeneration to come.

It’s up to us as a democratic nation tostop this mockery and treat this nation asa serious business not a free circus showfor the whole wide world to see.

PEUGEOT’S best selling vehicle wasnot about to go stale anytime soon,but to give it an even fresher edge in

its cutthroat segment, Peugeot has treated it to a raft of improvements for 2015.

A freshbutfamiliar look is ushered in

by a redesigned front bumper that housesa wider grille, new ‘twotone’ headlights,taillights that have been reinvigoratedwith a clawshaped LED pattern and a newrange of alloy wheels.

Its youngatheart target audience will

also have more colour andexterior personalisationoptions, highlights beingthe Orange Power paint option and the Menthol Whiteexterior styling package as you see in thegallery above. Undercover detectives arenot listed among the target market for theformer option.

Not much changes inside, where the208 already stands apart with its smallsteering wheel, higherthanusual instrument panel and large touch screen.

There are, however, a new batch of gadgets on offer, including Active City Brake,MirrorScreen, reverse camera and a newpark assist system.

On the engine front, Peugeot continuesto offer its normally aspirated PureTechthreecylinder petrol engine in 1litre and1.2litre guises, pushing 50 and 60kW respectively, and they’ve been joined by aturbocharged, direct injection version ofthe 1.2. Mated to either a fivespeed manual or sixspeed automatic gearbox, the new1.2 turbo motor develops 82kW and it canbe paired with a new ‘GT Line’ trim, whichadds an extra dash of street cred with its

GTIlike interior and exterior design enhancements.

The 1.6litre turbocharged GTI also soldiers on, albeit with some new design features, while the aforementioned GT Line isalso available with upper versions of Peugeot’s 1.6litre HDi engine.

FORD South Africa’s motorsport activities have been unitedfor the 2015 season with the launch of a motorsport programme under the new Ford Performance brand.

Tracey Delate, Ford SA’s marketing manager, said: “Fordremains committed to innovation through performance andthe new global Ford Performance team ties together racing,performance vehicles and parts.

“Regional performance engineering and racing teamshave been united as one global team under Ford Performance, which sees the integration of Ford SVT, Team RS andFord Racing. This unified organisation serves as an innovation laboratory and testbed to create unique performancevehicles, parts, accessories and experiences for customers.”

This approach sees the development of smart innovations and technologies in aerodynamics, lightweight materials, electronics, powertrain performance and fuel efficiency that can be applied more broadly to Ford’s product portfolio.

Cronjé said: “We have the best car out there andknow that we will be right at the front challengingforstagewinsandoverallvictories. It isfantastichaving the backing and support of Ford PerformanceandFordSouthAfrica,andwehopetoaddevenmoresilverware to the trophy cabinet throughout the season.”

According to Houghton, the team will start offtheir season on the Tour Natal at the end of Februarywiththesamespecvehicletheyusedin2014buttheywill have the benefit of the latest specification forthe Sasol Rally in April 2015.

Houghton said: “We sent one of our Fiesta bodyshells back to MSport in the UK at the end of lastyear, and it is currently being updated to the latestlevel. This will ensure that we have the new upgradesfor the rest of the season as we fight for championship glory.”

IT’S all system go for the inaugural TongaatPanthers Classic 42.2km race that takes placeon Sunday 15March from Outspan Ground inTongaat commencing at 5am.

The executive and committee membersworkedhardduring thepast fewweeks topre-pare and plan the race.

Thisraceincludesthe21.1kmrun/walkanda10kmrun/walkforthecommunityandfamilymembers.

It’s a new beach route and is one lap at42.2km.

The early 5am start will also allow the run-ners to lock some good times in ensuring thatthey qualify.

Participants at the finish will be receivingt-shirts, hydration in the form of cool drinksand water, including sandwiches and goodprize money for the winners.

The10kmrun/walkisanaddedeventforthecommunity members that want to participateinandtothosethatwanttotaketoroadrunningto keep fit and healthy.

The club guarantees and assures of excel-lent facilities, first class hydration, excellentmarshalling, fruits, and cool drinks, energydrinks at many tables on the route and spotprizes. The 10km run/walk is also of a friendlyand easy route and will make for an excellentfamily outing.
