I'VE recently been bombarded withquestionsofthevalueofelectronicme-dia and whether or not it is usheringoursociety intoanewage, ordumbingdown humanity as we know it.

It makes for an interesting argu-ment.Ononehand,youhave fascinat-ing advances in thewaywecommuni-cate with others around the world.

We are no longer restricted to justthe communities we live in.

Oursocietyhas in justa fewdecadesadvanced its sphere of communica-tion on a global level.

Just the other day an Israeli wom-an, who works as a communicationsexpert,madecontactwithmeonFace-book and has thus far shared manygreat insights about her country – ashave I (I'm saving the corruption dis-cussions for later).

Would thishavebeenpossibleorasaccessible 10 to 15 years ago?

I don't think so. Yes we did haveemail, theinternetandtelephones, butdid we really have the social aware-ness of other countries aswe do now?

Not really. However, this coin is painfully two-

faced with other social ills stemmingfromelectronicmasscommunication. When the internet first came about, many modern day philosophers andtechnological experts assumed thiswouldfreehumanityfromitsmanyre-strictive physical bonds.

In many ways, it has. But, asweall know, the net’s great-

est endeavour thus far has been the‘porn’ industry. There has also been adecreased advent of attention to vitalissues around the world such as theAmerican Russian stand-off in Syrianwaters. Instead, we find more atten-tion directed toward Kim Kar-dashian's fashion sense, or Lady Ga-ga's new album release. All great dis-tractions of our time.

We need to ask ourselves as hu-mans...areweparticipatingpositivelyfor the futureofourrace?Howwillourgreat great grandchildren label ourcontribution to the betterment of all?

Wehave great resources at ourdis-posal, yet we choose to squander ourpotential with menial distractions ofattention seeking parasites. The solu-tion is simple.

Take all your electronic devices –your cellphone, iPads and computersand allow them to show you the realworld mainstream media is hidingfromyou.Tuneintonewswebsitesandalerts and dominate conversations ina meaningful manner. Don't allowyourself tobedictated tobypoliticiansand corporations. Arm yourself withknowledge that is out there and use itto uplift your society and world. Electronic media - good or bad?

SEVENTEEN years after our Bill of Rightsand Constitution, we finally have an em-powering Act, aimed at ensuring the pro-tection of personal rights of privacy, se-curity and dignity.

The Protection from HarrassmentActHarrassment is commited when one, di-rectly or indirectly, engages in conductthat one knows or ought to know, willcause harm to another. Examples of har-rassment include:>> Following, watching or pursuing aperson;>>Loitering outside a premises where aperson works, lives or even happens tobe at;>>Delivers letters, packages or evenelectronic mail to a person;>>Engages or sends undesirable elec-tronic communicationsThe Act also addresses and provides re-lief from Sexual Harrassment, which isdefined as:>>Sexual attention from a person whoought to know that such attention is un-welcomed.>>Remarks, gestures and messages ofa sexual nature, that have the effect ofoffending, intimidating or humiliting aperson.Courts now have increased and widerpowers to address unbecoming interac-

tion. Some of the changes are:a)An application can be brought by athird person on behalf of a complainant;b)A person can bring an application out-side of the normal court hours, if urgentrelief is necessary;c) Order the police investigate a matterfurther, with a view of establishing theidentity of the offender.

The Act offers greater protection andextends beyond the Domestic ViolenceAct, which is limited to persons who are

in a "domestic relationship".Now, those whose only remedies

were the somewhat ineffective "peaceorders", can approach the courts forprompt effective help.

Those who breach the orders that aregranted, face arrest and even imprison-ment, as do those who lie in their affida-vits of their applications. In a societywhere respect and dignity ought to beour priority values, this Act will certainlyprovids the means to enforce our Consti-tutionally Protected Rights.

Well wishes to the TamilCommunity during the month

of Purtassi

Purttasi Festival in South AfricaMany generations of Telugu speaking families who relocated to South Africa have kept their culture and traditions to thisvery day, which is similar and sometimes not similar to Tamilians

SOME South Africans are privileged tohave had the chance to learn theTelugu language and understand,

write and/or speak Telugu.Purttasi Festival is fasting to please

Saturn or Sani Bagavan, one of the nineplanets. Saturdays are observed for theworship of Hanuman and Shri Balaji be-cause Saturdays are free from the influenc-es of Saturn and other planetary forces(Grahas).

The month of Purtassi (mid SeptembertomidOctober)isdedicatedtotheworshipof Maha Vishnu (the preserver) who is theabsolute symbol of the Transcendentstate of Ananda.THE HOLY TRINITYIn the Holy Trinity (Trimurthi) of Brahma,Vishnu and Siva, the Preserver is Vishnu. Itis the period of the year in which we payhomage to Lord Vishnu. Therefore our wor-ship is thanksgiving to mother nature forpreservation.

Preservation is a Divine Attribute whichembraces many aspects of our life to whichwe invoke Lord Vishnu as Emperumal, Gov-inda, Gopala, Venketeswara, Hari Naraya-na, Balaji, Srinivasa, Runganatha, Ram-chandra, etc. It was in the month of Purtas-si, Lord Vishnu in the form of Sri VenketaChala Pahi (Balaji) came to earth to guidepeople and left his form in the ThiruppathiHills in India. Therefore people from allparts of the world flock to India to payhomage to Thirupathi to get a glimpse ofthe Divine form by taking vows to over-come their problems.

At many temples, the Garudan Flag ishoisted on the first day of the month. TheShree Emperumal Hindu Temple does not

hoist the flag on the first day of the monthbecause the insignia of Garudan lies per-manently at the entrance of the Temple. This flag is renewed annually during theThiruna Festival. However, the first day ofthe month, Malayppa Swami and his twoconsorts and Lord Ganesha are taken inprocession around the temple to heraldthis sacred month.Thereafter prayers are held on each Satur-day of the month. Special recitals pertain-

ing to Lord Vishnu are conducted from reli-gious books like Garuda Parthu and Thiru-naamPadhigam.Devoteeshailthephrase:“Govinda, Govinda, Govinda”, after eachverse is recited. The NaamamDevotees especially on Saturdays wear theNaamam or the Vaishnavite symbol. Sym-bolically, the Naamam represents LordVishnu’s two feet in his reclined pose –which is represented in the shape of a capi-

tal “U” (white). The central stroke repre-sents the Thrishaum (red stroke) – MotherLutchmee. Why are prayers are observed on Sat-urdays?

Saturdays are observed for the worshipof Hanuman and Shri Balaji because Satur-days are free from the influences of Saturnand other planetary forces (Grahas).

In this month planets like Mercury andKetha influence the earth.

Therefore, the worship of Lord Vishnu withdevotion and love will help us to have apeaceful and happy life with good andobedient children.

“Bakthi” is the main theme of all therituals in the month. Benefits from observ-ing Purtassi. The community becomes united duringthis period. We must strive at all times tobe united. The restrictions to a vegetarian diet is notonly an act of self discipline but this absti-nence has profound religious significance, which helps in the purification of the body, mind and soul.It helps to discipline the mind, removeswaste and toxins from the body and helpstorevitalisethebodyinitscapacitytofunc-tion well. It further helps the mind to be-come more alert and reflexes becomessharper.Devotion to God especially during this Kali-yug period is important. This period whichis characteristic of excessive greed for pow-er, extreme hatred, jealousy, anger and in-tolerance have polluted the life of man ingeneral all over the world. We must strive, seek and maintain the fol-lowing virtues: truth, peace, righteousnessand non violence. This helps people in di-recting their thoughts towards God Reali-sation.Fasting: You have to fast until evening. You can eat after Sun goes down afterlooking at the sky, my grandmother wasone of them who carried this rule out forthe entire month.

*You can have fruits and milk duringthe fasting but not cooked food. As I cur-rently fast on Mondays, Poornima.

Time to cleanse the mind, heart and intellectIT is sometimes difficult to understand how fasttime flies. It feels as though just recently that wewere engaged in the observance of Purtassi. How-

ever, we should count it as a blessing as the more fre-quently we participate in such practices, the more webenefit.

Hindus of South Indian descent throughout theworld are in preparation to embark on a month-longperiod of austerities and sacrifices in honour of LordVenketeshwara or Perumal as He is referred to in Tam-il Nadu.

Swami Vivekananda took to the world stage inSeptember 1893 and declared that “we are all poten-tially divine beings” and that the world is a gymnasi-um where we come to work out all our past karmasuntil we are able to manifest our divine nature. It israther unfortunate though, that man has become sopreoccupied with artha and kama (wealth and plea-sure) that he has made little progress in understand-ing himself. In this high-tech age we have becomearm-chair citizens. We think like how we ‘remote-con-trol’ almost everything or utilise our fancy gadgets toconduct most of our activities from the comfort ofour couches, that liberation and realisation will alsocome at the touch of a button.

Just as it is necessary to clean our brassware andother jewellery that oxidises on contact with the at-mosphere; it is necessary to cleanse the mind, heartand intellect that are dulled by contact with worldlyactivities. Man has become mechanical in his life andutterly controlled by the senses. Hence this period of

austerities, fasting and sacrifices helps to cleanse andfocus the mind away from the senses and dwell onthe inner divine reality of ours. It is a time when wecan try to act according to our true nature - that isto live by truth, to show compassion, to exhibit peacethrough our actions and love all as the very manifes-tation of God. This can be accomplished by regularprayer, silent meditation and contemplation onNarayana as the centre of our beings.

One should not miss the opportunity to feed thepoor, help the sick and spread peace and love in thename of Govinda. We must also pray for strength ofmind and the will to be able to continue these practic-esevenbeyondthemonthofPurutassi.Asweprepareto clean our households, bring out the new kitchenutensils and make the external environment as pureas possible for the observance of Purutassi; let us alsocleanse and prepare the heart, body and mind toshine with the brilliance and purity of Govinda whois the in-dweller of our hearts.

May that all pervading Narayana who is wor-shipped as Venketeshwara in this month bestow HisgraceupontheworldandhelpusHisignorantchildrento raise our consciousness to the divine level. On be-half of the affiliates and members of the TongaatHindu Unity Forum, we wish all devotees and seekersoftheselfwhoareobservingthisholymonthstrengthand peace. We also encourage all Hindus to visit tem-ples and shrines and engage in collective prayer forthe welfare of society and the world.
