major part of our heritage,” said Ram.Pam described the voting experience as the
“beauty of democracy”.Twenty-year-old Lindo Kuhle said he felt a

“The process was extremely easy and it issuchabeautiful day. It was absolutely perfect.”
Long time voters Nicohlas van Staadenand wife Anna-lee said they were elated to bepart of the democratic process.
“We have done this several times and it issomething that is excellent to be part of. I amglad we have this system in our country and Ihope everyone exercises this right as soon asthey can,” said Nicohlas.
Well-known community member Nazir Sa-dack brought along his entire family to thevoting station, saying it was important thathis children understood the process.
“They may not be of age yet, but my wifeRaeesa and I thought it was important for thekids to see the procedure. The future of ourcountry must be educated and understandwhat goes on.”
SAPS sector manager for the beach area inTongaat, ManishaMaharaj-Marie, said that noincidents had taken place in the morning.
“It is smooth sailing at the moment. Partyagents have set up in their cordoned off areasand thus far everything has gone on without ahitch,” said Maharaj.
Meanwhile, the politicians...African National Congress (ANC) councillorMichael Abraham said his party was expect-ing a landslide victory.
“Locally, weknowwe have donewhat need-ed to be done to ensure the majority stays withus, the people. During the last 10 years, wehave proven that we have given back signifi-cantly to South Africa.
“We pulled our people out of apartheid andwe will continue to serve them in the best waywe know how. ”
Cope councillor Steven Naidoo said theirpreparations for the elections were extensiveon the ground.
“We have strengthened our structures andhave had our party agents trained. We havealso aimed to assist those needing transporta-tion and have arranged for it,” said Naidoo.
“I am confident we will do extremely wellthisyear.Previously,we were a party in infan-

“As a councillor I have never been chasedfromanyof the informalareas,assomecouncil-lorshad to run for their lives,” said Jayanathan.

October said the department, Dube Trade-Port and the KwaZulu-Natal government had
held extensive negotiationswith Samsung.
Mabuyakhulu hinted at“good news” for KZN last yearwhen he said an Asian compa-nywas planning to invest R3 toR4 billion.
It is believed that financeminister Pravin Gordhan hasheldtalkswithSamsungbossesto help close the deal.
He is said to havemotivatedfor a bigger investment of a ful-

Samsung is trying to keep the investment“below the radar”, especially that of emergingcompetitors, such as China’s Hisense, whichset up a TV production plant in the WesternCape last year.

THEASEN PILLAYAMIDST the rising costs ofliving and econom-ic crisis, consumers continue to fall deeperinto debt. Nationally, there is an alarming in-crease in consumer over-indebtedness.
More people are unable to meet day to dayliving expenses, like buying food, because thebulk of their income is spent on trying to payoff their debt.
More alarming, is that large numbers ofdebts fall within the category of “recklesscredit”, a term that most consumers are un-aware of.
In terms of the National Credit Act, acredit provider can only render credit to aperson, after they have conducted a full andproper financial assessment.
In theory, an assessment is supposed toaddress the following:
*takingreasonable steps to assesswhetherthe proposed consumer understands therisks and costs of the proposed credit agree-ment,
*ascertaining the current debt and re-pay-ment history of the consumer
*clearly establishing the existing financialmeans of the consumer.
If a financial assessment had been con-ducted, it can still be challenged and deemedinvalid, if it is established that the credit pro-vider did not take steps to ensure that the con-sumer fully appreciated the risks and costs ofthe agreement, or, if entering into that creditagreement would have made the consumerover-indebted.
Should a credit agreement be found to bereckless, then that agreement may be sus-pended, or the credit provider may be forcedto write off part, or the entire debt.
The above relief is, however, conditionalupontheconsumerhavingmadeatruthfuldis-closure of ALL material information, as re-quested at the time of the assessment.
There are some transactions that recklesscredit does not apply to, such as school/stu-dent loan, an emergency loan or a pawntransaction. The remedies under recklesscredit can greatly assist families who findthemselves over-indebted and it is stronglyrecommended that people in such circum-stances, consult a debt counsellor.
For a free consult to determine if you areover-indebted or are a victim of recklesslending, email: [email protected] orcall 031 566 3306.

SOUTH Africa is a country born outof a turbulent history, where racialdiscrimination reigned supreme.
Our freedom from Apartheid oc-curred because of the countless sac-
rifices of blacks, whites, Indians andcoloureds respectively.
Our fight for democracy was ex-actlythat,afightfordemocracy;asys-tem where each person irrespectiveof their race, ethnicity or creed, could vote and support the party oftheir choice.
We cannot mandate people tothink the way we do, neither can weforce people to support a specific po-litical party. Beingpart of ademocra-cy means respecting each person’sright to hold their own political
views. Nelson Mandela clearly eluci-dated that a democracy allows for adiversityofopinion, andadiversityofpolitical views. He also emphasizedthat those views must be respectedand protected. This is precisely whyI have been calling for the establish-ment of a Ministry for Minority Af-fairs, to ensure that the specific is-sues faced byminority communitiesare addressed.
I therefore think Visvin Reddyneeds to consult his own party andensure that his statements are in
linewith the party’smandate, beforehe makes loose assertions based onanger and contempt, which ulti-mately breeds greater seeds of divi-sion.
As a nation, there is so much thatunitesus. This is an idealwhichwascherished by both Mahatma Gandhiand Nelson Mandela, iconic leadersthat understood the importance ofcreating unity among people.
The oppression and subjugationof the Indian community in South Af-rica over the last hundred years has
left an indelible scar, which hastystatementsandconfrontationwillnotsolve.
Mr.Reddy,Iamsure,canacknowl-edge that many in our communityhave not been mentally liberatedfrom the yolk of their former mas-ters. Therefore, we must work con-structively and with humility to re-leaseour community from the shack-les of cerebral slavery, which stillbinds us to our former colonial mas-ters.

MINORITY Front LeaderShameen Thakur Rajbansi de-nounced the “pissing DA car-toon” as damning, immoral, senseless, defamatory and un-ethical.
This is a direct insult to allMinority Front supporters andthe lndian community. I amshockedanddisgustedat the po-litical campaigning of some DAmembers who circulated thiscartoon on social media andemailed it to our leader and my-self.
“This action violates the elec-toral code of conduct, signed bythe leader Helen Zille,” statedMrs Rajbansi, and social sitesmust not be used to defame peo-ple or organisations.
This cartoon has hurt the dig-nityof the lndiancommunityas itdisplaysthearroganceofasupre-mist colonial mentality over theMinority Front which is home tothousands of lndian voters.
No amount of reasonable ex-planationwillabsolvethecreatorof this unethical cartoon thatdamages the absolute fabric ofour society and democracy.
TheMinortyFrontlogoissacredto the party and its supporters.
This act is malicious and thework of desperate candidateswho stoop to the level of humanrights violations in trying toplease theirmasters for their po-sitions. The perpetrators whocreated this defamatory cartoonmust be prosecuted by the Elec-toral Commission.
The Minority Front has laidformal chargesatSAPS for inves-tigation and has reported themattertotheHumanRightsCom-mission and to Facebook,.
This cartoon has violated theMinorty Front's rights for a freeand fair election, because it hasgoneviral on social networks, in-ducing hate-speech and racism.
The community must now bethe judge.
Mrs Rajbansi stated that thevote of lndian people will makehistoryon 7May,but itwill be fortheMinorityFront-therealhomefor all lndians. We are not de-terred and the Tiger’s legacy willnot be destroyed, as the car-toon predicts.

“THE people laugh with us, cry withus, getbetter fromsickness, orpassaway. We see all the Etete commu-
nity’s troubles - and joys,” says SummerhillHouse’s Esther Lynn.
Lynn, affectionatelyknownbymostas “Go-go”, is amuch-loved Etete resident and an in-tegralmember of the Summerhill House non-profit organisation team.
Many liveshavebeenmadebrighterbyherkindness and generosity, on her own accountand through theNPO. She cooks for and feedsthe people. She teaches some to sew and selltheir work. She helps them get birth certifi-cates and ID documents so they can work orobtaingrants. Shealso takes time topraywiththose who are inconsolable.
Lynn has brought up 11 children in herhome - eight foster children - and still helpscare for numerous others.
“Ihavealways lovedchildren, andsomanyof them in the community donot have enoughtoeatandaresickandneedhelp.Someofthemhavebeen abandonedby their parents, or theparents are away working most of the time. Idon’t have a lotmyself, but I cannot turn themaway.”
Lynnisable to feed50childrenonceaweekwith the help of Roberts and Chaplin’s auditdepartment which supply Summerhill withsandwiches every Tuesday.
Lynn also cooks during school holidayswhen the children get a hot meal each day tomakeup for themeal theywouldnormally re-cieve at school.
Funds, raised by Summerhill, also go to-wards getting documentation for people, school fees, taking Bibles to the community, building the Summerhill facility and more.
LynnwasbornandgrewupontheTweediefamily’s sugar farminlandontheNorthCoast, andworked for the them formany years. Sheeventuallymovedwhenmostof thefamilyhadmoved away or died, and it no longer felt likehome. She then got a job through her churchwith a family that needed help to look aftertheir twins, and she thenmovedwith them to
Pretoria for a time.“I will never forget, it was my first trip in
an aeroplane and I was so excited and ner-vous, but had to be calm to look after the chil-dren,” she reminisced.
She did not stay long in Pretoria, sayingthereweretoomanypeopleandit“wasnothertype of place”.
Shewas unemployed for threemonths be-fore getting a job, again through her church, with Summerhill founder Paula Owen about12 years ago.
Lynnhasnothadaneasy life, havingneverbeen to school, losing her husband in 1990and then having her home in Stanger repos-sessed as she couldn’t pay the instalmentswithout her husband and she found herselfhomeless with 11 children to take care of.
Lynn was desperate and even considered
prostitution as a solution to help pay keep herhome. She decided though that a house, evenone she built with her hands, was not worthher dignity. Luckily Church Alive helped herfind a temporary place to live in.
Lynn eventually found a house in Etete, which the Owen family helped her buy andwhich is now the heart of many Summerhillgatherings.
Tearfully she says she doesn’t knowwhereshewouldbe if itwasnot forheremployerandclose friend, Paula. “Paula has a wonderful, kind heart. She has done somuch forme andthe community. She is very special to all of us.Thanks to hermy house will be ours forever.”
The Summerhill concept began 10 yearsago, andwasofficially registeredasanNPO in2007.

The first three goals were scored by KylehimselfwhileothergoalscamefromClarkandMoona.
InthesecondhalfBuffelsdaleGiantscontin-ued to impress however, it wasn’t easy thistime as Rajastan regrouped and managed tochange their style of play and within minutesstarted to score goals.
Rajastan improved their tempo and at-tacked the Buffelsdale defence but the Giant’sgoalkeeper Colin “Bolo” Naidoo pulled outsome classic saves denying Rajastan anychances of getting back into the game.
OnMondaynightBellsofTongaatandClas-sic of Phoenix played to a 6 goal each draw.
Thelocal teamstampedtheirauthorityear-ly in the first fiveminutes they displayed goodpassing skills and created good goal scoringopportunities and within five minutes theywere rewarded with two quick goals.
However,Classic foughttirelesslyeventual-ly scoring one goal to make the score 2-1.
The complexion of the game changed inClassics favour after they could not maintaintheir composure and the Bells strikers TyronandJoshuatookadvantageofthesituationandpunished themwith yet another two goals be-fore the referee blew for the break.
In the second half Classicwas themore de-termined side they played their heart out butthey just could not break the solid Bells de-fence.

However, Classic striker Stanton did notgive he fought to the very end andmanaged toscore twice in the dying minutes of the game.
The draw was a good reflection. In the final game of the night Chelms beat
