Business fights back>> Chamber of Commerce take up arms against North Coast power crisis

THE iLembe Chamber ofCommerce has stepped in, onbehalf of the local business

sector, to help resolve electricityshortage issues on the North Coast.

This comes after outages in pre-

vious weeks and the urgent imple-mentation of load shedding onThursday left some businesses highand dry.

Chamber CEO Cobus Oelofsesaid he attended a meeting in Jo-hannesburg on the matter on Tues-day with the South African Cham-

ber of Commerce and Industry(SACCI) and forum, the Minister ofPublic Enterprises Malusi GigabaMP and Eskom CEO BrianDames.

The meeting was held to dis-cuss improvement of service deliv-ery and ‘ensure Eskom and govern-ment are reminded on a constantbasis of the impact of electricity

supply issues on the local economy,its growth prospects and resultingissues such as job creation’.

Oelofse explained that the Na-tional Energy Regulator of SA (Ner-sa) would also need to be engagedat SACCI level to raise efficiencyimprovements with service provid-ers.

He said alternative solutions are

on the cards.“In the longer term, the iLembe

Chamber will work with both localand district role players to considerways of encouraging and promot-ing both energy saving and appro-priate alternative energy solutions,”said Oelofse.

A 52YEAROLD Umhlali grandmother appeared in court facing charges of childabuse after she was accused of burning hergrandson with an iron.

Jabulile Cele, who has apparently beenevading police for almost a week, was arrested last Tuesday.

It's alleged that she burned her 13yearold orphaned and mentallychallenged

grandson on his arms, legs and forehead.A teacher at the child’s special school

noticed the burns and took the boy to theprincipal's office. A case was thereafteropened by the school. She appeared in theNdwedwe Magistrate's Court which waspacked to capacity with community members.

According to school principal Anesh

Singh when confronted, Cele claimed thatthe child burned himself. However, Singhsayshedoesnotbelieveahumanbeingcanburn himself repeatedly with a hot iron.

The Department of Social Development called on the state not to grant bail.

Medical reports indicate that althoughthe teen sustained third degree burns, heis recovering in hospital.

Department spokesperson NcumisaFandezi also raised concerns over the increasing levels of violence against defenceless children.

"We are deeply saddened by the factthat this poor child was abused by the verysame person who was supposed to be protecting him. We would like to appeal to ourcommunities to [protect our children]. We

are also calling for all those who committhese crimes to be brought to book."

The case has been postponed to Fridayfor bail application. The grandmother wasremanded custody.

TWOarmedrobberysuspectswerearrest-ed on Sunday, 9 March after a shootoutwithmembersofReactionUnitSouthAfri-ca (RUSA).

According toRUSAheadPremBalram,a stolen vehicle was recovered and twosuspects were arrested at 1am on SundayonCottonlands Road nearNdwedwe afterthe shootoutbetweenRUSAmembersandthe occupants of a stolen SUV.

The vehicle is believed to have beenstolen in Morningside in Durban a fewhours earlier.

“The vehicle, a white 2007 Toyota For-tunerwasstolenaround6.30pmonSatur-day night from Rapson Road in Morning-side, Durban. The owner realised that hisvehicle was missing and informed theSouth African Police.

“ThecomplainantalsoinformedTrack-erhashisvehiclewas fittedwithatrackingdevice.” According to reports, Trackerthen contacted RUSA at around midnightonSaturday circulating the informationofthe sought after vehicle.

Eskom announced emergency load shedding lastThursday, with areas such as Salt Rock and Esenembebeing affected.

Although the emergency was lifted at 10pm onThursday evening, a rotational schedule has beendrawn up which may be implemented by Eskom asand when it is needed.

The problem last week was caused by ‘wet coal’,

THE Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) is making headway ingaining commercial property own

ers’ support, says the iLembe Chamber ofCommerce.

Ballito is experiencing increasing levelsof urban decay specifically around the issues of crime, grime, bylaw enforcementand general deterioration of public areas.

This is negatively impacting on property values, investor confidence, business

and the quality of life in the area.The Ilembe Chamber of Commerce, In

dustry and Tourism has led the drive to establish an Urban Improvement Precinct(UIP) City Improvement Precinct (CID) asit is known in Cape Town to turn aroundthe management of public areas in Ballito.

To date the Chamber has secured 55%of total property value and 30% of totalproperty owner support. The target datefor securing 51% support is April.

“We need to take control of our futurein Ballito and the UIP is the answer. One

property, one vote,” said UIP coordinatingmanager Clare SwithenbankBowman,who is driving the petition process.

She said a total of 270 forms filled inby those interested in being a part of theproject are needed to reach 51% in supportof the UIP. “We are more than half waythere as we have 157 forms to date andneed another 113,” said SwithenbankBowman.

The initial target date to operationalisethe UIP was August this year, unfortunately municipal policy approval and goahead

was only obtained at the end of October2013. The process was started on 1 November 2013, which required the secured written support from 51% of 525 commercialproperty owners by 15 January (municipaldeadline).

“This deadline was not realistic due tothe festive season,” said SwithenbankBowman.

“However we are aiming to secure ahigher support threshold as it will take acollective commitment to turn Ballitoaround.”

Once 51% support is achieved, an official application will be lodged with thecouncil requesting commencement in themunicipal financial year 1 July 2015.

Once approved, the municipality willpro rata the budget amongst all commercial property owners within the UIP boundary, meaning no ‘free loaders’.

SwithenbankBowman is conductingpresentations every second Wednesday atthe iLembe Chamber offices to further inform the public. The next events being 19March and 2 April at 8am.

Eskom calls on consumers to use electricity wisely by switchingoffgeysers,poolpumpsand all nonessentialappliances when notneeded to reduce theimpact of load shedding.

In January 2008 Eskom introduced loadshedding, which isplanned rolling blackouts based on a rotating schedule, in periodswhere short supplythreatens the integrityof the grid.

THE man accused of murdering hisgirlfriend, Kimeera Rajbunsi (17) ap-peared in the Verulam Magistrate’sCourt on Friday.

SholinBissoon(21)wasarrestedonWednesday after he confessed to kill-ing Rajbunsi, his former girlfriend,loading her body into his car anddumpingherinapoolofwaterinasug-arcane field in Glen Anil.

Provincial police spokespersonCaptain Thulani Zwane said the sus-pecthadpointedout theareawherehehad dumped the body.

“It is alleged that on Monday,

Kimeera’s mother returned home atWoodview from work at 5.35pm andnoticed that her daughter was not athome. She found the gate wide open,sawabroken frying panand the bloodon the floor was cleaned with a mop,”said Zwane.

to be reckoned with.Over and above the R40 000

worth of training and mentorshiphe received through the iLembe

Chamber’s Entrepreneur Pro

gramme, Gumede walked away with R25 000 prize money, R3 000 worth of marketing collateral, and advertisingspace and editorial coverage in local publications.

All of this has led to a quadruple increase in sales overthe five month period after the competition finished. Hissuccess has inspired entrepreneurs in Groutville andKwaDukuza alike who are excited to see this young manset a trend.

Instead of blowing his own trumpet, Gumede says hissuccess has challenged him to be consistent in high quality, to be more disciplined and to build his customers’ trustin him.

Gumedeisaselftaught,selfemployedcarpenterwhoidentified a highly valuable market that had been left unattended and underserviced by industry players for years– the black, middle income home owners, initially in theGroutville area – and he has become number one in thismarket.

This income group has over the years gradually up

graded their standard of living, but, due to limited resources, has been unable to acquire the services of bigger industry players whose services have targeted the high incomesector.

Gumede designs and fits custom kitchens, bathroomsand bedrooms each unique to the needs and desires ofeach individual customer.

The iLembe Chamber’s Entrepreneur Competition’sjudges were impressed by his “absolute commitment toquality”, as are his customers who sing the praises of hiswork.

Their satisfaction spread mostly through word ofmouth and has lifted his business exposure. This, coupledwith the exposurefromtheentrepreneurcompetition, hasled to sales spiralling up.

Gumede recounts how one of the homeowners at Seaward Estates saw a cupboard he was making for his domestic worker and insisted that he must install his kitchenas well.

Superior Kitchens’ customer base has grown beyond its initial niche and the homeowners of UmhlaliCountry Club and other estates have been seekingits services. Gumede’s dream to see his business gointernational may be much closer than he could everimagine.

With matric under his belt, Gumede says his lateuncle Bheki taught him everything he knows.With no money for tertiary education Gumede decided to work and earn a living.

Starting with welding and selling burglar guards,Gumede thereafter took an interest in his uncle’scupboard making business and decided to followhim and learn as much as he could from him.

When his uncle passed away in 2010, Gumedetook over the business – through commitment andthe valuable lessons learned through the entrepreneur programme, his business quickly grew beyondhis uncle’s original humble operation.

Gumede says the iLembe Chamber’s competitiontook him “from step one to step 10”.

“When I came into the programme I was lost. Itwas the first time I heard of a business plan. Whatis my target market? What are the important andkey things to focus on? How to market my productand business? I learnt so much,” he said.

Henotesthatsomepeopledonotknowwhotheirtarget market is – they just sell to anyone.

“The programme does not just give ordinary basicinformation, but equips you with skills that will workfor the rest of your life.” He also encourages youngentrepreneurs to apply what they are taught in life.“Knowledge is not power if you don’t apply it,” hesays.

Gumede has certainly applied what he learned– prior to the Entrepreneur competition he got anaverage of two kitchen orders every two months;now he gets up to four kitchen orders every monthexcluding additional wardrobe and bathroom orders.

Thankful for the knowledge gained from the Entrepreneur programme, Gumede will be joining theiLembe team to increase awareness of the programme and will be visiting schools in KwaDukuzaand Groutville with the The Entrepreneur 2014 Roadshows.

DID anything great happen to you in the last24 hours? I mean something monumental...something you're so thankful for that you feltlike breaking out in song?

Go ahead, review your day.Maybe you're thinking about whether you

received any cheques in the mail or perhapsyou're just delighted because today's mail

didn’t include any bills! As you consider this question, you might reach the conclusion that nothingtruly spectacular occurred. But, hold on for a moment. Did you have a place to stay last night shielding from the elements? Imagine what it might belike if you and your family didn't have a roof over yourheads. Is there a bathroom, plumbing or hot waterwhere you live? Does that make your life a little morecomfortable?

From the time you awoke, did you have the useof your eyes to see the beautiful sun?

Were you able to get out of bed, walk around andgo outside? Some people won't have that luxury today. What about your hearing?

Can you hear the sounds of the birds chirping orthe wind rustling through the trees? At breakfast,could you smell the fresh coffee brewing or the toastafter it popped up in the toaster?

What would a day be like if you couldn't hear orsmell or if you couldn't taste your food?

Yes, there are people who don't have the full useof these senses. And what about those things thataren't necessary to survive, but that enhance yourdaytoday existence, items like a car, a radio, a television or a computer?

Are you truly thankful for these and other giftsyou regularly use? I'm sure that you get my point.Each day, we have dozens of reasons to give thanks.Yet we generally take these things for granted andfail to see them as precious items to be cherished.Of course, when any one of them is taken from us,even temporarily, we take notice.

But, day in and day out, we rarely consider ourblessings. Why am I making such a big fuss aboutthis? It's simple. When you focus on gratitude andother positive emotions, you feel better and aremore relaxed, more creative and more productive.

You also have a positive influence on thosearound you, at work and at home.It costs us nothingto be grateful and appreciative, yet it has a considerable impact on the quality of our lives. So, don'twaste another minute. Every day, reflect on thepriceless gifts you've been enjoying. Openly shareyour gratitude with others. And, the next time somebody asks if anything great happened to you today,you will have plenty to say!

EVERYDAYis Thanksgiving!

ON Saturday night, I semigatecrashed a friendofafriend’s birthday party in Pietermaritzburg.

This party reinforced every stereotype aboutthe drinking capabilities of Pietermaritzburg residents, and those of us who had bused up fromDurban were expected to quickly blend in.

Three shots of tequila in quick successionmade me forget that I have two left feet, absolutely no coordination and a tendency to thinkbig while under the influence.

When the salsa lesson began, I jumped ontothe dance floor, and easily caught the rhythmof twostepsforward and twostepsback.

If I got an occasional left foot mixed up witha right foot, I argued that since I don’t have aright foot, this would have been impossible.

I admitted defeat when the stepping turnedto sidemanoeuvres and twirls. It reminded meof the time I attended one of Lisa Raleigh’s freezumba classes at Suncoast.

While Raleigh is a fantastic instructor, theglances of the people near me turned to stares,and the stares turned to laughter as I bobbedwhen everyone twirled; twirled when everyonejumped; and jumped when everyone ceasedmovement at the end of a song.

Having seen me halt my pathetic attemptsat learning salsa, the kindhearted and braveinstructor later approached me and selflesslyoffered to take to the dance floor with me, withno thought for the safety of his toes, orthose of his friends on the dance floor. I politelybut firmly declined his offer, having no desire tomake a fool of myself or crush his selflesstoes.

Another aspect of this evening worth mentioning is the confusion surrounding the dresscode.

Various changes of hearts on the part of thebirthday boy in the week leading up to the eventled to the 50 or so people at the event beingdressed as everything from princesses, devils anddragons to sheiks and harems.

The advantages of arriving at such an eventin a prehired minibus are obvious.

One can drink to one’s heart content withouthaving to consult @pigspot on Twitter beforedriving home and hope like hell that all roadblocks between party and home have beentweeted.

The disadvantages include sharing a bushome with strangers who feel nothing to throwtheir drinks over you en route and subject youto long and arrogant soliloquies about how successful and rich they are.

It was all worth it to sing “Happy birthdaydear Stranger...Happy Birthday to you!”

Salsa and twoleft feet

IN Germany between October 1939 and August 1941,Adolf Hitler sanctioned the Action T4/Euthanasia Programme.Criterion for euthanasia was simple: ‘life unworthy of

life’.The ‘mentally ill’ and ‘incurably ill’ fell into this catego

ry. A child euthanasia programme was established inorder to eradicate ‘spreading’ of deficient genes andlater shifted to adults not deemed worthy of life.

At this time in Nazi Germany you would be eligiblefor euthanasia if you had an abnormally small head,a swollen head or deformed limbs.

Paralysis and Down Syndrome also made one unworthy of life, as did epilepsy, schizophrenia and encephalitis.Eventually children eligible for euthanasia came toinclude ‘those designated as juvenile delinquents’.

The Nazi propaganda machine premiered filmsand distributed literature to inform the public of conditions at asylums and how much money was beingwasted in keeping alive those that were unable to contribute anythingmeaningfulbyNazistandardstosociety.

As WWII swung into action, corners had to be cut,and ‘mercy killing’ would save the state money.

During this time it is estimated that close on 300 000people were killed using ‘the best available human judgement [to perform a] mercy death’. Historians who have

studied the T4 programme tell us that the ‘mercy deaths’were ‘nearly always carried out without the consentof the people concerned or their families’.

But this is Adolf Hitler we are talking about; inan era when education and propaganda were the samething. So what is a human being worth over 70 yearslater?

According to research undertaken by the U.S. department of soils and agriculture or some such body a fewyears ago, if the chemical and mineral components of thehuman body were added up, we would be worth aboutR1000.

This doesn’t include organs, where, if you are havinga particularly tight month, you can rake in a tidy R6000+for your spleen, according to black market prices.

But then we get to ‘statistical life’ value. Simply put,this is the amount the taxpayer should (theoretically)be willing to pay to stop the death of one human being.Reports released by the Obama administration in 2011indicated that the value of statistical life was $6.1 million.

Since statistical life value is used as a benchmarkfor deciding on regulation, if your life doesn’t holdas much statistical value as the lives of others, cornerscan be cut.

Thus things such as pollution and crime are not astightly regulated in areas where human life has a lowerstatistical value.

Determining the value of human life is tricky. Yourmomprobablythinksyouareworth the lives of 10 people.Your boss probably doesn’t.

Your government may think your life is more worthwhile if you are an active contributor to economic andsocial growth in the form of taxes so might your neighbours.

But the value of human life also fluctuates with socialpressure, legislation and culture, as seen in the often highly emotive debates over abortion.

I have always found it ironic that on the same wingof a hospital doctors will fight to save the life of a20weekold premature ‘baby’ but in another rooma 20weekold ‘foetus’ will be aborted. Who decidesthe worth of the baby or the foetus? And why is it that

abortion appears to be targeted at the poor and nonwhites? So, do we gain worthfrom our race? Are we moreworthy if we are middleclass? Are we more worthy ifwe have two children insteadof five?

Aiken’s creative home and lifestyleis enough to make any artist’sheart stop.

Known for his chess sets of famous political and sporting figures, Aiken has lived in Umdloti for13 years now. He moved to the areaafter he decided to change his career from an accountant to owninga game reserve managementcompany in Bushveld, Limpopo.

His latest passion is to marketdevices he invented that imitatethe feel of smoking this to curbthe consumption of cigarettesglobally.

He has even put his home onthe market to help fund this philanthropic venture.

It was patented in August lastyear and is currently undergoingtrials. He is also currently makinglarge monochromatic paintingsthat tell a story about South Africa, working on a townshiporientated series and board game,amongst other private commissions.

He said art was always his firstlove, but growing up in a differentera meant his family did not support his dream as a young man he studied chemical engineeringand accountancy.

“I always found a way to do artthough – I could sculpt from theage of four or five, and used tomake clay figurines for people Itook on hikes in the game reserves.I also did water colours, but thingsreally took off when I took some ofmy chess sets to the Rosebankmarket,” said Aiken.

He said the sets were sold outon the very first day.

It was here that he also met hiswife, Audrey Rudnick, also an extraordinarily talented artist.

KWA.MAMMA Care Centre received agenerous donation from Wonderbag slow cookers last Friday.

Assisted by the Christmas Fair Fund,Wonderbag donated 15 Wonderbags and14 hampers, which included staple foodsto the centre.

The bag works by placing food in a potthat has been brought to the boil andcooked for a few minutes into the bag toslow cook. This saves electricity or gas andreduces carbon emissions.

Kwa.Mamma’s Frieda Bontkowskyjsaid she is grateful for the donation, and

that bringing the gas bill down will helpthem to do more for the community.

“Our main cost is feeding the peoplein Shakashead – 2014 is the year we reallystrive to help. If we can bring the gas billdown by using the Wonderbags, we canfeed more people. At the moment we arefeeding 60 people a day.”

Assistant brand manager Gareth Viljoen explained that the Wonderbag is an ingenious invention that conserves heat andcontinues to cook after food has been removed from the stove or fire. “We have adeal going with the USA that for every bagthey sell there, we are able to donate a bagto the African, but especially South African

communities. It really is a fantastic project,” said Viljoen. The bags are made inTongaat, and the whole initiative wasfounded by local conservationist SarahCollins when loadshedding was first implemented 2007.

She saw that the key to African conservation was to alleviate the poverty issue.Using the Wonderbag saves 60% of gas,electricity or firewood, thus it ‘makes practical, environmental and commercialsense’, according to Collins. The project also helps to create jobs, employing 50 permanent staff at the moment. Kwa.Mamma serves as a crèche, job or purpose creation facility and feeding scheme.

the long termgoal of developmentis empowerment, through tangi-ble factors, such a self reliance,self esteem and ability to contrib-utemeaningfullytosocialandeco-nomic processes.

"The previously disadvan-taged and the youth who cannotget into tertiary centre's arebene-fiting from these projects that canbe duplicated nationally. This is amajor contributing factor to curb-ing unemployment."

Timmal also proposed the ideaofabusinesshub for locals toben-efit from.

"We hope to resource youngand upcoming business people. Itis an idea we want all to buy into.Thisvisionwhichhasbeen imple-mented overseas will surely re-duce employment."

TheVerulamandDistrictsVolleyballAssociation (VDVA) has over the yearsdeveloped into a core member of theregion and has helped grow the gameamongboth junior and senior players.

WhilethebodyisbasedinVerulamits structures have attracted teamsfrom Phoenix, Newlands and Avocawithclubs fromtheseareasparticipat-ing in it's exciting indoor and outdoorleague competitions.

Thisyear thebodykicksoff its tenthanniversary with an opening outdoortournament which will be held at theVerulam Recreational Grounds on 15March.

"Verulamhasalwaysstagedahighlycompetitive league structure, withmost players aspiring to provincialrepresentation. One of the develop-mental strategies that we have adopt-edovertheyearsistoencouragejuniorplayers toplay at senior level. This hashad the effect of fast tracking the stan-dard of junior and youth volleyball asseen in winning performances in theinter-district tournaments," VDVApresident, Lingum Pillay said.

According toPillayVDVAhasahostof celebratory tournaments plannedfor the year.

"As alwayswe are focussed on suc-cessful completion of both the indoorand outdoor leagues. As this is ourtenthanniversaryyear,weaimtocele-brate with a host of commemorativetournamentsandassociated functions

Sibonelo Makhanya who lives in Oaklands in Verulamwas apupil ofDianthusPrimarySchool inVerulam,and thenproceed-ed on a 100% scholarship to Glenwood Boys high school beforegoing to DHS where he matriculated in 2013 with a bachelorspass.

He has played his entire club cricket at the Verulam CricketClub. Makhanyawho captained the KZNCU Coca cola team andtheKZNCubsteamwasselectedtorepresentSAU19inthepresti-gious U19 World Cup in Dubai.

South Africawas crowned champions after beating Pakistanin the finals. SA had the beating of the formidable Australia inthe Semi Final. SA captain, AidenMarkram scored an unbeaten66 not out in the final to lift the trophy for SA. Makhanya playedin the round robin match against Canada and showed his classby taking 3/20 in 10 overs.

The SA team boasted the player of the match in the final, C.Bosch, who took 4/15in 7.3 overs. Kagiso Rabada the feared SAspeedsterwasnamedmanof the tournament for taking17wick-ets, with his best of 6/25 in 10 overs. andVerulamheld its Bi-enniel Gen-eralMeetingattheVerulamSecond-ary school hall on Friday, 5 March.TheBGMsawprincipals,parents,

heads of sports codes in TongaatandVerulamcometogethertoselectanewcabinetforTonverwhichcele-bratesamomentousmilestoneinits20 year history.

It was unanimously decided thatGuru Ramcharan will head the or-ganisation during the prestigious20th anniversary celebrations. The20th anniversary of the Tonver

Games is expected to see a majorevent taking place in 2014.

In his acceptance address Ram-charan made an impassioned pleato heads of all schools in the Tonverregion to add their shoulder thewheel and get sports off the groundat their respective institutions.

He also called on them to supportTonver in all its initiatives to createa balance between academic andsporting excellence.

Special guest at the BGMwas re-tired Pinetown Districts sports co-ordinator Ayesha Mohamed whocommendedTonver for theirorgan-isational abilities.InheraddressMohamedinformed

He assured the Tonver delegatesthat his Billy Nair Education desk willsupport the Tonver Games 20th anni-

versary Celebrations throughout theyear,andhecongratulatedGuruRam-charan’s election as President of Ton-ver.

Tonveralsoacknowledged thecon-tributions of newly retired husbandand wife team Dan and Dolly Aru-mugam for their 20 year associationwith the organisation since the incep-tion of the Tonver Games concept.

SEM SA Chetty presented themwith tokens of appreciation for theiryeomenservice to the causeof schoolssport in the Tonver region.

The vision anddirection forTonverwas spelled out in Ramcharan’s presi-dential address to the meeting whichwasentitled“Don’t lookat tomorrow’sdawn through yesterday’s eyes”.

It was a powerful call by the headofavoluntaryorganisation,whichhasa proven track record of achieving ex-cellence, for all role players to share inanewvisionofdeliveringexcellencetothe learnerswhoare theultimateben-eficiaries. It was a call for positivethought and co-operation from all theaffiliates of Tonver.
