ANEWtransport regulationwillforceparentstobuckleuptheirinfant children in child car

seatsandlimit taxidriversto100 km/h on the open road.

This is among several otherchanges found in a recent govern-ment gazette amending the National

Road Traffic Act (NRTA) that includethe compulsory fitting of “speed gov-erners” into all new taxis, buses andtrucks fromDecember2016as a req-uisite to operate.

Thechildseatregulationwill likelycome into force as early as April nextyear—andCaroSmit, headof thePi-etermaritzburg-based non-profit or-ganisation South Africans Against

Drink Driving (SAADD) that lobbiedfor the changes for over six years, be-lievestheamendmentswerea“coup”for transport pressure groups.

“Weused every platformwe couldto pressure the state tomake sure in-fants had to be placed in child carseats.Weunderstanddrinkdriving isa complex matter, but studies showwe can halve the amount of road

deaths by simply making sure seat-belts are worn,” she said.

Smit saidwhile theyhadextensiveconsultation with the national De-partment of Transport, their over-tures to talk to the provincial depart-ment were ignored.

“I challenge the KwaZulu-Natal TransportMEC [Willies]Mchu-nu to take a selfie of himself sitting in

his carwearing his seatbelt.Weneedleaders to take the lead on this.”

Theamendmentshavebeen in thepipeline since 2012 and were gazet-tedonOctober31.Thegazette,signedby Transport Minister Dipuo Peters, statesan“infant isapersonbelowtheage of three years” and the driver ofaprivatevehicle“shall ensure thataninfant travelling” is seated on an “ap-propriate child restraint”.

Taxis, trucks and buses wouldhave to be fitted with a speed gover-norlimitingtheirspeedto80 km/hfortrucks and 100km/h for buses andtaxis.

Democratic Alliance transportspokesman Manny de Freitas saidwhile the Act was “great”, he had“concerns” over its enforcement.

“They [traffic police] can hardlyenforcewhatisinthelegislationatthemoment.”

Online trucking magazine pub-lisherPatrickO’Leary said: “This leg-islation is 100%needed. In the truck-ing industry, it makes financial senseto travel at only 80km/h as it reducesoperational costs.”

recently visited Sandfields Primary, Tongaat JuniorPrimary, Victoria Primary and Isenembe Secondaryto thank the principals, coordinating teachers andpupils who raised funds for the society’s “Children’sFund” programme.

Board of management member, Balan Subramunier said: “the main emphasis of the fund is toprovide poor pupils with a breakfast meal, so theywould be better able to concentrate in class work”.

Currently 2391 pupils are beneficiaries of thefund.

Social worker Devi Naidoo said that research supported a positive link between hunger reduction, improved nutrition and children’s learning.

“The fund involves children helping children, andwe are proud of the teamwork between school children and the society,” said Naidoo.

In addressing assemblies, the TCW team praisedthe staff and pupils of the schools for their enviablesense of charity.

“It is wonderful to notice how little children areable to think of less fortunate pupils from such anearly age. It says a lot about the power of motivationthey receive from their principal and teachers,” saidboard member Peru Naidu.

Principal of Victoria Primary, Mr. LB. Maharaj encouraged and motivated his pupils to continue withtheir outstanding efforts towards this initiative forthe years to come.

Social auxiliary worker Mariam Mkhize gave special thanks to the coordinating teachers for theircommitment and hard work towards the sustainingthe programme.

Certificates of recognition were presented to principals and qualifying pupils.

Behind the Door>> Book launch gives a glimpse into the trial of the year

DEBI BLAKE

KEEN Durban bookworms were luckyenough to meet the coauthors of“Behind the Door the Oscar Pistori

us and Reeva Steenkamp Story” at its recent launch.

Seasoned journalists Barry Batemanand Mandy Weiner had the audience engrossed with their behindthescenes(and pages) anecdotes at the event hosted by Books & Books last week.

Bateman who was one of the firstjournalists at the scene after the shootingtold of his astonishment at the unprecedented attention from overseas media.

“Within an hour of the news breaking, all international television stations werecamped outside Pistorius’ housing estate,”Bateman commented.

He said that Mandy Wiener was thenatural choice to collaborate with on thebook being an awardwinning investigative journalist and author in her own right.

Behind the Door not only provides acompelling narrative of the shooting andthe events and trial that followed but alsoprovides some details that were not mentioned in court.

With the State appealing against theOscar Pistorius verdict and sentence, Wiener and Bateman mentioned that the nextedition of the book may include updateddetails.

ies or hot milk, is afantastic way of get-ting the benefitswithout the addedkilojoules found in abar of chocolate.

Raw cacao andcacao-based prod-ucts have been con-sumed across theworld for centuries.

According to re-search done by theAlpine Foundationfor Life Sciences inSwitzerland, the in-digenous people ofMesoamerica werealready using cacaobefore 1000 BC.

The Aztecs inparticular used todrink liquid cacao,or what they called“chocolatl”, for itsperceived ability tobuild resistance andfight fatigue.

Cacao later alsobecame popular inEurope in the 16thcentury it was alsoused for medicinalpurposes.

Today, cacao isstill regarded as anexceptionallyhealthy food – al-though many of itshealth benefits stillhave tobesubstanti-ated by good re-search.

>> Devotees remember thelessons taught on thisauspicious day

SAI devotees throughout the world will be celebrating the advent of Sathya Sai Baba on Sunday, 23 November.

Sathya Sai Baba had taken human form on 23 November 1926, in a remote village of Puttaparthi, inSouthern India.

From an early age, he began to demonstrate extraordinary, super human powers and displayed profound wisdom regarding spiritual matters.

At age 14, he firmly declared that he had takenbirth for the express purpose of leading mankind backonto the path of truth, righteous conduct, peace, loveand nonviolence. Though his fame has spreadthroughout the world, he resided in Puttaparthi in anAshram called Prasanthi Nilayam (Abode of SupremePeace).

Sathya Sai Baba established many modern, stateoftheart hospitals, elementary and secondaryschools and major universities, all of which provideservices to everyone free of costs. He also constructedamassivedrinkingwatersystemforthebenefitofmillions in villages and cities across India.

The message he bringsSathya Sai Baba taught that man’s basic nature

is divine and that the purpose of life is the realisationof that divinity. This, he said will occur through leadinga moral life, rendering selfless service to those in needand developing love and respect for all life.

He reemphasised the core principles that formedthe foundation of all the world’s religions, being, truth, love, right conduct, peace and nonviolence. Heencouraged devotees to practice these human valuesin their daily lives and set an inspiring example by theway he led his own life.

The responsibility for bringing about world peace, rests with the individual. His prescription is simple, yetprofound:

If there is righteousness in the heart,There will be beauty in the character. If there is beauty in the character,There will be harmony in the home.If there is harmony in the home,There will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation,There will be peace in the world. His MissionSathya Sai Baba stressed that he is not seeking

to establish a new religion or to direct people towardsa particular religion. He encouraged those attracted to his message to“continue worshipping along lines already familiar toyou”.

He has also said, “Let the different faiths exist andlet the glory of God be sung in all languages and tunesthat should be the ideal. Respect the differences between the faiths and recognise them as valid as longas they do not extinguish the flames of unity. If eachperson lives the ideals propounded by the foundersof their religion, unaffected by greed or hate, then theworld will be a happy and peaceful habitation formankind.”

The Sai Centres are dedicating themselves to creating individuals who are spiritually attuned to theneeds and aspirations of their respective religions andwho are responsible citizens of the nation.

The organisationThe Sathya Sai International Organisation is a

spiritual one, it recognises the fundamental unity ofall the religions. It has centres in over 137 countries.

The organisation itself is not important; it existsonly for what it gives; an opportunity for searchingsouls to gather together and find the way to progressalong the spiritual path and help others on the samejourney.

About his birthdaySathya Sai Baba has stated:“The day when God takes birth in your heart, is my

birthday. That day needs to be celebrated.”For more information contact: Sagayen Murugan
