Crime out of control again>> Verulam plaguedwith hijackings andarmed robberiesKAVEEL SINGH

HIJACKINGSand theft ofmotorvehicles are just some of thecrimesthathavesentVerulam

into a crime spiral.Commenting on the state of safety

over the last twomonths in Verulam,Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa)head Prem Balram said millions ofrands worth of vehicles and itemshave been taken by criminals.

“Around20vehicles havebeenhi-jacked and around25motor vehicleshave been stolen in Verulam alone inFebruary this year. Several peoplehave been murdered and house-breakings andarmed robberies haveescalated.”

According to Balram, fear hasonce again gripped residents on theNorth Coast who feel that the crimesituation is out of control “with bra-zen armed robbers and hijackersstriking during daylight hours andfleeing with vaulables”.

“Some resident believe that the

crime has spiralled and daylight rob-beries and hijackings are a direct re-sult of the Rusa helicopter not beingpresent during the past fewmonths.”

The Rusa-owned Robinson R44helicopter was at an Aircraft Mainte-nance Organisation for and overhauland service.

Balram said aircraft engineerswere awaiting parts from the Robin-son Helicopters Company that arebased near LosAngeles in theUnitedStatesandthat thehelicopter“shouldbe in operation within two weeks”.

The aircraft is often called by thepublic and the police in assisting totrack down suspects, assist in recov-ery of motor vehicles and respond toserious crimes in progress.

Balramadded that amajor contri-bution to crime was the involvementof lawenforcement incriminalactivi-ties explaining that security compa-nies, the police and people taskedwith protecting South Africans wereteaming up with criminals to earnquick money.

Balram said that several arrestsmade by officers with glaring evi-dence against the suspect were letloose and corruption seem to be riferesulting in the same suspect being

arrested several times for the samecrime.

“The helicopter and crew will bebackinoperationshortlyandthejointoperations between the South Afri-can Police and Reaction Unit SouthAfrica will result in a decrease incrime in Verulam.”

Commentingon the stateof crime, ward councillor Chocks Arunajallamsaid there seems to be an influx justafter the December period.

“I think it is clear thatmost peoplehave theirguardupduring the festiveperiod. After January a lot of peopleseem to be very exposed and there-fore taken advantage off.”

Verulam Community Policing Fo-rum(CPF)chairpersonDuncanDubesaid although he did not have statis-tics with recent figures he believedunemployment created a desire tocommit crime.

“It looks like thisone isbeyondourcontrolbecausepeople think theyaresatisfying the need to sustain them-selves.Unfortunatelyit’sawrongwayof solving personal problems.

“Addedto this is theeasyavailabil-ity and affordability of drugs. Drugaddictswill risk their lives just to feedthe habit.”

Dubesaidopportunisticcrimewasalso a major issue.

“Wearesquarely toblame for this.Wearing expensive necklaces, opengates, unlocked vehicles, is, besidebeing careless, an opportunity forcriminals.

“Criminals are opportunistic bynatureand theywillnot let theoppor-tunitygoby.Therearemanyreasons,but these are top of the list.”

He added that safety was not justthe priority of the police.

“Enough has been said about lackof resources in the SAPS and manyotherreasonsthatmakepolicinginef-fective. It is timethatcommunitiesre-alised that SAPS alone are not a solu-tion.

“If we want to root out crime, let’sall get involved and see if we cannottogether with SAPS make a differ-ence. Let us join other crime-fightingstructures like the CPFs and formstreetcommitteessothatweknowwehave one another’s back.”

THE demarcation board of South Africa has again, onthe eve of election hype, resolved to propose changesto ward demarcation.

A draft proposal has been introduced suggestingthat Gandhi’s Hill, Chetty’s Hill, Hillview, Potty’s Hill,Van Rova, Metcalf and Westbrook all move from ward62, ANC councillor Nonpumelelo Mabaso’s ward 61 to,councillor Michael Abrahams’ ward.

On the coastal side Seatides, La Mercy, Umdloti,Desainagar, Canelands, Buffelsdale, ChelmsfordHeights and Flamingo Heights have all been proposed to move to ward 58 under councillor MxolisiNzimbomvu.

Commenting on the demarcation proposal, Abrahams said he was not sure of the real reason behindit.

“To me it does not matter because I have alwaysbeen here [to serve] the people. They can put mewherever they want to, I will still be working hard forthe community. I am a worker. The people know thisabout me.”

COPE councillor Steven Naidoo was in stark contrast with this opinion directly calling out the ANC onits “devious intent”.

“The obvious question that arises is why the demarcation board has decided to always do this as werun up to the election period. And the demarcationis always shifted to suit the ANC and its candidates. This seems to be a strategic ploy for areas that theANC has not done well in.”

Naidoo went on to say that issues of service delivery and housing had been going on for years yet government chose to prioritise this.

“We have more pressing issues like electricity andwater restrictions. The concern is that we are not ableto deliver properly. I have tried to contact the demarcation board and they are not furnishing information. It seems like the ruling party people have the information. This should be made public immediately. Ratepayers are affected and they are hampered most withthe lack of service.”

Tongaat Civic Association (TCA) head Jeeva Pillaysaid it was obvious that the demarcation was a political tool.

“It has always been this way. Even the previousgovernment would use it to disguise their poor number of voters. It is not something that will be stoppedimmediately. It does create a lot of problems. It is justnot democratic. The ANC is quick to blame the apartheid government for issues, yet they turn around anduse the old regime’s tactics.”

Pillay said he felt the redistribution of areas fromward 58 was positive.

“They would remove Waterloo and still have theairport. It is an area that they lost. Ward 61 has beenseriously reduced, but has put Westbrook into it.”

Pillay said demarcation showed the ANC was“worried”.

“They are doing what generations of colonialistdid to protect their interest.”

DA councillor Brian Jayanathan said it was clearlya politicallymotivated move by the ANC.

“The demarcation board seems to convenientlyprovide these opportunities for just one party so theircouncillors and officials are reelected into positions. How is this a democracy? I think we all need to takea step back and realise we are being taken for a ride.

“South Africans need to stand up and be countedand protest this kind of behaviour. It is about time westop letting them get away with this.”

Speaking to the Weekly a spokesperson from theDemarcation Board said ward boundaries are reviewed every five years prior to the local elections andthe number of councillors and thus the number ofwards may change.

“The MEC determines the number of councillorswhich is formula based, and half of the number ofcouncillors represent wards. All wards in a municipality must have approximately the same number of registered voters. The norm is determined by dividing thenumber of registered voters as on 5 March 2014 bythe number of wards. A deviation of 15% from thenorm is allowed.”

When asked how the proposed change would affect residents and municipal runnings on a day to daybasis, he said: “Wards are meant to create an areawithin which voters can vote for a ward candidate oftheir choice to represent them in their municipal council. Voters vote at the voting station where they areregistered.”

When asked if the motivation behind the demarcation was politically motivated, he said it was “theward delimitation process is prescribed by Schedule1 to the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act,1998.”

Mr B.R. Narain, a resident ofTongaat for33yearsandtheownerofstalls at the vegetable markets in the

Narain's story began earlier thismonth when he visited StandardBank on Watson Highway to obtainand fill an SARS provisional form.

“I went to a little table and startedfilling in the form. Suddenly a guy in-terrupted me and asked for assist-

Narain saidmoments later anoth-ermanwith a red shirt askedhim thesame question.

“To me it was weird, but I didn'tsuspectanything.Idirectedhimtoen-

Narain said he alerted the bankstaff andasked themtophone thepo-lice.

“I ran outside and saw both mencasually walking and laughing. Ialerted the security guard at whichpoint they began running away fromus. We lost them in the taxi rank.”

However,Narainsaidwhileinpur-suitof thesuspects,anothermanwhoattempted to assist the chase flaggeddownaMetroPolicevanwithtwooffi-cers.

“But they did not help us.”Narain said he “knows the taxi

guys well” and requested they assisthim.

“At this point the police joined usin the search. But it was difficult tofind both men in a sea of people.”

Tongaat SAPS Colonel RonnieHeeralall confirmed the incident andsaid police were working on retriev-ing the footage from the bank.

Death sentence forCasuarina treesTHEmindless mass destruction

of the Casuarina Trees at thecorner ofWatsonHighwayand

Genazzano Road is a despicable actwhich has left the coastal landscapeblighted - untimely visited by a curseof man.

These trees were not just trees or“alien invaders” as the so called au-thorities would have us believe, theyformedaneco-systemthatwaspleas-ant toviewand to relief to sit underorwalk beneath.

Itwasarestingplacewithanabun-dance of crisp fresh air to the tiredsoul.Thesightthatmetusonthatfate-ful afternoon was like viewing withdisgustandhelplessness theremainsofseveraldehornedrhinosuffocatingin their own blood.

The scene resembled the gorysight of a suicide bombing in a busymetropolis. Utterly saddening.

My question is: has the Depart-ment of Forestry pronounced “geno-cide” on all Casuarina trees in thecountryandwhether thedepartmenthas also declared war on all “alien”plants in South Africa? Will bluegums,MdoniandGuavaandmulber-ry be next?

Iwould furtherappreciate therea-

son for the removal of the trees to bepublished.

The article refers to “a Casuarinabranch fell on a human being manyyearsagoandthehumanbeingdied”.Does this then justify the destructionof all Casuarina trees 50 years later.

I was, however, glad to note thatthe developer, in being unquestion-inglyobedienttotheinstructiontode-stroy from the department obligedhimself willingly, and at his own ex-pense, to hire an excavator, dig up allthe remaining stumps and then re-plenish the affected areawith indige-nous trees.

Nature lovers and the communityneed to register their anger and griefat themassacre of the once delightfullandscape I liken it to a “monstrousgang rape of young virgins.”

I draw the attention of all con-cerned to Section 24 of the Constitu-tion of RSA wherein a right is en-trenched:

“Everyone has the right ….. tohave the environment protected, forthe benefit of present and future gen-erations …. Through measures topromote conservation”

The Bible in Romans Chapter 8confirms the plight of nature (trees in

particular) that await liberation fromfrustrations of creation.

Nature conservationgets scant at-tention fromthebudgetofRSAanditssustenance depends on the goodwillof nature lovers.

Ourseasareempty, ourrhinosandelephants are fast disappearing and“rogues” plunder the shad and cray-fish. Thepresidencyneeds to set up acommitted environmental policeforce to address these issues.

It simply means transferring all“blue clad, trigger happy” membersof the current police force into thisunit. They possess the brute force tosuppress anything and nothingstands in their way.

If they can enter the sanctuary ofparliament and break jaws in thepresenceoftheircommanderinchief, then they are capable of stopping all

Can’t blame apartheidWE were incredulous when president JacobZumastated that the currentblackoutsaredueto apartheid.

We thought theCEOofEskomTshedisoMa-tonaprobablygot itrightwhenhesaidinnoun-certainmanner thatEskom’s failingsweredueto a lack of maintenance over the years.

We were disconcerted when possibly themost effective communicator of recent years,Andrew Etzinger, had his tongue stilled be-cause his fluent explanations became unac-ceptable to the ruling party.

At a time when our daily visits of stage twoblackouts are punctuated by an incident whenEskom passed through the threshold of thirdstage blackouts, howworried should we be bythe bland assurance from the utility that thereisnottheslightestpossibilityofatotalblackout?

Ifour figuresarecorrectEskomhasagener-ating capacity of about 9000 megawatts.

When stage three is reached the utility haslost 4000 megawatts and when it is breacheda national blackout is not far down the road.

The five years’ delays in the commissioningof Medupi and Kusile Power Stations has seenthe original budget of R150 billion jumpup to R326 billion.

Togetherwith themonthly cost of R2 billionfor diesel, this will push Eskom’s interest pay-ments into the stratosphere.

Apiece of legislationwhichwouldbring im-

mediate relief and which would enable inde-pendentpowerproducerstostrengthenthena-tional grid has been rejected by the NECof the ANC where political will eats awaythe ability of the economy to grow.

Thisruling fromLuthuliHousehasbeendu-lyacceptedbythebloatedtopbrassoftheutility,manyofwhomowetheirpositionstobeingwellconnected politically, rather than knowingmuch about management and the generationof electricity.

On the one side there is an impossibly highwage bill where the average yearly income ofsome 46 000 employees is R633 000 a year orR53 000 a month.

Who would not like to work at Eskom withthe retired CEO, Brian Dames, taking homeR22 million last year.

On the other side there is a patent inabilityto generate income by selling its product.

The eight metros, seven of which are rundown by the ANC, owe Eskom R53 billion.

The total figure forallmunicipalities runsatR93 billion. Soweto alone owes Eskom R4 bil-lion, but the ruling party is unlikely to takeany action with the metro and municipalelections taking place early next year withtheir position faltering badly already.

Many ignorecancer'swarning signs>> Become proactive and more positive

MANY people ignore potential warning signs of cancer, a new Britishsurvey found.

The study involved 1 700 people aged50 and older in the United Kingdom whocompleted a health questionnaire listing 17symptoms, including 10 widely publicisedpossible cancer symptoms. The symptomsincluded unexplained cough, bleeding, orsignificant changes in bowel or bladder activity.

While 53 percent of the participantssaid they had experienced at least one ofthe potential cancer symptoms in the previousthreemonths,only2percentthoughtcancer was a possible cause of those symptoms.

In many cases, people attributed potential signs of cancer to reasons such asage, infection, arthritis, cysts and haemorrhoids, according to the Cancer ResearchU.K.funded survey. It was published in thejournal PLOS ONE.

Check symptoms early"Most people with potential warning

symptoms don't have cancer, but somewill and others may have other diseasesthat would benefit from early attention,"lead author Dr. Katriina Whitaker, senior research fellow at University College London,saidinaCancerResearchU.K.newsrelease.

"That's why it's important that thesesymptoms are checked out, especially ifthey don't go away. But people could delayseeing a doctor if they don't acknowledgecancer as a possible cause," Whitaker added.

"It's worrying that even the more obvious warning symptoms, such as unexplained lumps or changes to the appearance of a mole, were rarely attributed tocancer, although they are often wellrecognised in surveys that assess the public'sknowledge of the disease," she said.

Sara Hiom, director of early diagnosisat Cancer Research U.K., said in the newsrelease: "Diagnosing cancer early saveslives because it gives patients a betterchance that treatments will be successful." HEALTH24

WATCHING too much television may lower your chances of survival after coloncancer, new research suggests.

Lower mortality risk“The takeaway message from our

study is that both minimising TV viewing,to less than two hours per day, and increasing exercise, to fourplus hours perweek, were associated with lower mortality risk among colorectal cancer survivors,” explained study author Hannah Arem, a postdoctoral fellow with the U.S.National Cancer Institute’s nutritionalepidemiological branch.

While the study showed an association between television watching, exercising and survival odds among coloncancer patients, it did not prove a causeandeffect link.

Arem and her colleagues report theirfindings online in the Journal of ClinicalOncology.

To explore the impact of lifestyle oncolon cancer survival, the study authorssifted through data that had been collected by the U.S. National Institutes ofHealth for an earlier study.

The initial investigation had includedmore than 566 000 men and women between the ages of 50 and 71, all of whomhad completed an initial health and lifestyle questionnaire at some point between 1995 and 1996.

All were asked to indicate the degreeto which they had routinely participatedin moderate to vigorous “leisuretime activity” on a weekly basis over the pastdecade. Activities included swimming, biking, golf, tennis, dancing, fastwalking, jogging, aerobic exercise and/or heavygardening.

Weekly leisure activityThe new analysis honed in on the

nearly 3 800 participants who went onto be diagnosed with colon cancer. On average, the diagnoses had occurred approximately five years following comple

tion of the initial survey.By stacking prediagnosis exercise

habits up against cancer survival information, the researchers determined thatcolon cancer patients who had seven ormore hours of weekly leisure activity before their diagnosis showed a 20 percentlower risk of dying – for any reason – thanthose who had engaged in no leisure activity whatsoever.

And after analysing a followup survey completed between 2004 and 2005by roughly 1 800 of the original 3 800 colon cancer patients, the team found thatthose who engaged in seven or morehours of weekly leisure activity postdiagnosis faced a 31 percent lower risk of dyingfrom any cause, regardless of their activity levels before diagnosis.

The study team also found that thosepatients who routinely watched no morethan two hours of TV per week before di

agnosis faced a 22 percent lower risk ofdying from any cause than those whowatched five or more hours per week.

Television viewing was chosen as astandin for sedentary behaviour “because it is the most prevalent leisuretimesedentary behaviour,” Arem said.

The research team found a lower mortality risk among those who watched lessTV postdiagnosis, although it was notdeemed statistically significant.

No firm conclusionsOn the more specific question of how

exercise habits and television viewingroutines might affect the risk of dyingfrom colon cancer, Arem said the researchteam could not draw any firm conclusions.

“We looked at both allcause mortality and colorectal cancerspecific mortality in these analyses,” she noted. “[And]the risk of dying from colorectal cancerwas higher among the individuals whowatchedmoreTVcomparedtothosewhowatched less than two hours per day, butthe associations were not statisticallysignificant.” Health24

Healthy habits mayreduce colon cancer risk>> A good diet and exercise can make the world of difference

AFEWhealthyhabits couldreduce your risk for coloncancer, accordingtoanew

study.Researchers analysed data

from more than 347,000 peoplein Europewhowere followed for12years.Duringthattime,nearly3,760 cases of colon cancerwerediagnosed among the partici-

tyle factors affected colon cancerrisk: healthy weight; lowamounts of belly fat; regularphysical activity; not smokingand limiting alcohol consump-tion; and a well-balanced diet.

This diet was high in fruits, vegetables, fish, yoghurt, nutsandseeds, andfoodsrichinfibre, and low in red and processedmeat. The more of these factorspeople had, the lower their riskfor coloncancer, according to theresearchers.

Compared to those with noneor only one of the factors, thosepeople with two healthy factorswere 13 percent less likely to de-velop colon cancerwhile the riskwas37percentlessforthosewithall five healthy factors, the studyfound.

However, the association wasgreateramongmenthanwomen, according to the authors of thestudy in the October 10 issue ofthe journal BMC Medicine.

Preventing colon cancer"Estimatesbasedonourstudy

populations suggest that up to22

percent of the cases in men and11percent of the cases inwomenwould have been prevented if allfiveof thehealthy lifestylebehav-iours had been followed. Our re-sults particularly demonstratethe potential for prevention inmen who are at a higher risk of[colon] cancer than women,"lead author Krasimira Aleksan-drova, of the German Institute ofHuman Nutrition Potsdam-Reh-bruecke, said in a journal newsrelease.

Read: Could vitamin D helpprevent cancer?

The findings "provide addi-tional incentive to individuals, medicalprofessionalsandpublichealth authorities to invest inhealthy lifestyle initiatives. Eachperson can contribute a lot toavoid cancer; the more healthylifestyle changes, the better," Al-eksandrova concluded.

While the findingsdon'tprovethat healthy living will preventcolon cancer, they add to evi-dence that factors suchasweightand diet influence your risk.

THREEuniversitieswillgetR37millionforresearchtowardsfighting cancer, the Sunday Times reported.

The money, from the Medical Research Council, wouldbe used to set up research units. The University of CapeTown (UCT) would focus on gynaecological cancers, including those of the cervix, uterus and ovaries.

The University of Witwatersrand would concentrate oncancers of the breast, colon and pancreas, and the University of KwaZuluNatal on cancers of the oesophagus, gallbladder, and liver.

Head of African Cancer Institute and chairman of anadvisory committee on cancer, Prof Vikash Sewram, saidmore cancers were being diagnosed because more peoplewere being screened.

"But where the focus needs to be is priority cancers,"he was quoted as saying.

He said the intention was to ensure accurate cancer surveillance, better and quicker diagnosis, and access to treatment.

ProfLynetteDennywhowouldleadtheUCT'sresearchteam said cancer had been sidelined by other infectiousdiseases.

"As cancer has been neglected for so long, there is agreat deal of catching up to do." Health24

Thegoodnews is thatwomennowhave an 89% chance of surviving fiveyearsafterdiagnosis. In fact, over thepast few decades, breast cancer hasbecome a very survivable disease.Manywomengoontoliveanother30-40 years after diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis is also nolonger synonymous with losing theaffected breast or breasts. Recon-struction methods have advanced tosuchanextent thatsurgeonscancon-struct near-perfect breasts by usingtissue from other parts of the body, giving the breast-cancer patient a lit-tle nip, tuck and lift at the same time.

What, exactly, is breast cancer?Breastcancerisageneraltermfordif-ferent types of cancer that developfrom breast tissue cells which, forsome reason, grow abnormally andmultiply, ultimately spreading to therest of the body.

The causes of breast cancer aremostlyunknownbutmayincludesev-eral genetic, environmental, nutri-tional and hormonal factors.

Symptoms of breast cancer aren'tobvious in the early stages, and anychangesinthebreastshouldbemoni-tored, especially if there are breast

lumps, changes in nipple appear-ance, swelling under the armor unu-sual nipple discharge.

Early diagnosis of breast cancer ispossiblewithroutinemammographyand early biopsy of suspicious lumpsor lesions.

ThelatestresearchWorldwide,re-searchers are searching for clues tothe causes of breast cancer, while ex-ploring new prevention strategiesand treatment options. A few impor-tant findings include the following:

* The success rate of new hormo-naltreatmentforbreastcancerisverypromising.Studies showthatwomenwho received hormonal treatmentimmediately after diagnosis and pri-or to surgery experienced suchmarked shrinkage of the lump thathalf of all patients who were ear-marked for a mastectomy (completeremoval of the breast) needed only alumpectomy (removal of the lump, while saving the breast).

* Research shows that new adju-vant therapy (treatment given aftersurgery) with aromatase blockerscan stop breast cancer as well as oreven better than tamoxifen - an anti-oestrogen drug used to prevent oe-strogen-positive breast cancer fromspreading to other parts of the bodyor to treat breast cancer that has al-ready spread to other parts of thebody.

* Although it's still ahotlydebatedtopic, researchers are finding that it

might not be necessary to cut out allcancerous glands in cases wherebreast cancer has spread to glandssurrounding the breast. The recentlypublished AMAROS trial indicatedthat removal of the so-called "senti-nel" gland - the first lymph node ornodes in the armpit to which breastcancer can spread - is highly effectivein treating breast cancer, especiallywhen combined with radiotherapy.

* Thenewest"silverbullet" indoc-tors' treatment arsenal is T-DM1, athree-pronged combination drugthat interferes with cancer cellgrowth in a targeted way. It attachesveryspecifically to thecancercell andreleasesapotentdoseofchemothera-py within the cell, while sparing nor-maltissue.Inonestudygroup,T-DM1increased survival rates in late-stagecancer patients by 50%.

However, muchmore work needstobedonebeforetheuseoftheexperi-mental therapy - a completely newmodel for attacking cancer - can bewidely implemented.

Risk factors - Women who carrythe BRCA1 gene, which is also re-sponsible for ovarian cancer, aremoreatriskofdevelopingbreastcan-cer.However,womenwhodon'tcarrythegene,butfall intooneofthefollow-ing categories, are also at risk:

- Those who have a strong familyhistory of breast cancer, especially amother or a sister who had breastcancer before the age 50

- Women who have family mem-bers who have tested positive for thegene

- Older women who have been onhormone replacement medicationfor more than 2 years

- Women with a high mammo-graphic density

- Women who become pregnantfor the first time over the age of 35

- Women who've never had chil-dren

- Women who started menstruat-ing before the age of 12

-Womenwhodrinkmorethanonealcoholic beverage per day

- Women who have had radiationtherapy to the chest area before

Self-examination Early detectionof breast cancer is the key to effectivetreatment. That is why experts en-courage all women to begin self-ex-amination and routine mammo-grams from the age of 40 or earlier ifyou have particular risk factors.

CANCER is emerging as one of the major public health problems in South Africa, said President Jacob Zuma.

“Breast cancer in particular affectsscores of women in our country, and requires our utmost attention,” said Zuma at the launch of the “Warriors Walkfor Cancer” initiative by his wife TobekaMadiba Zuma’s foundation.

“Let us remember that cancer is notabout statistics, it is about people, families, and communities. It is aboutour loved ones.”

He said one of the important interventions is ensuring that women haveequitable access to quality healthcare.“Crucial is ensuring that women are diagnosed early enough to save theirlives.”

Read: Why cancer remains a taboosubject in SA

Zuma also expressed concernabout the fear and stigma associatedwith cancer.

“Women suffer from being discriminated against by their communities, ostracised by their partners or husbands and painful deaths from cancer.Cultural barriers and taboo about surgery especially of the breast.”

The president said the rates ofbreast and cervical cancer are also rapidly increasing due to the impact of riskfactors associated with changing lifestyles such as obesity, smoking and alcohol.

“Our people must also take responsibility for their health too,” he said.

“In other words, we cannot act irresponsiblyandsmoke, drinkalcohol, notexercise and put on excess weight. If wedo so, we place our lives at risk for theearly onset of these noncommunicable diseases so largely preventable.”

WEEKLY

Freshly Groundto perform atCharity Fair>> Top local groups also in attendance

WEEKLY REPORTER

IT’S official – popular South African band, FreshlyGround will be performing at this year’s TongaatChild Welfare Charity Fair on Saturday 28 March. The “Doo be doo”, “Pot Belly” and “Waka Waka”

performers who have gone multiplatinum worldwide will be able to be seen for a fair pass of R30.

Freshly Ground formed in early 2002 and is madeup of seven talented and diverse musicians fromSouth Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Mahola, the band exudes a live performance energy thathas been the bedrock of their success. The experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) andJosh Hawks (bass) is complimented by guitarist JulioSigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, SimonAttwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla Rose Smith.

Although hailing from diverse backgrounds, between them the band’s members weave a musicalmagic that is highly infectious and undeniably groovy.

In 2003, Freshly Ground launched their debut album, JikaJika under their own Freeground Records label, the immediate success of which firmly cemented

the band as one of South Africa’s most successfulyoung acts.

Freshly Ground released their second studio album Nomvula in July 2004. Nomvula was recordedand produced byJB Arthur and SibusisoVictorMasondo.

The album sparked interest from Sony BMG Africa, who signed the band and released Nomvula in September that year. Radio quickly picked up on the single ‘Doo Be Doo’ and the catchy song went on to become a crossover favourite amongst a diverse spreadof stations and their listeners. ‘Doo Be Doo’ was themost played song in South Africa in 2005. The majorsuccess of ‘Doo Be Doo’ was followed by the singles‘I’d Like’, ‘Zithande’, ‘Things Have Changed’ and thetitle track of the album ‘Nomvula’.

The album sold 300 000 units in South Africaalone earning it multiplatinum status.

The success and broad appeal of the band wascelebrated in November 2006 when Freshly Groundwon the MTV Europe Award in the category Best African Act. The award placed the band firmly on the international music map and earned them further recognition on home soil as significant South African cultural exports.

Khwela excited by individual Non-Stop Dusi challengeWEEKLY REPORTER

LAST year’s K2 Dusi winner, twice Dusi K1thirdplace finisher and double NonStopDusi Canoe Marathon champion SboneloKhwela will take a new approach to thisyear's “Dusi in a day” on Friday 6 Marchwhen he looks to go the distance fromCamps Drift, Pietermaritzburg to Blue Lagoon, Durban alone.

Having threatened to do so in2014, the Euro Stee l/ Red Bull flyershied away from the individual challengeat the 11th hour and opted to partner fivetime marathon world champion HankMcGregor (Jeep Team/Kayak Centre) instead.

McGregor and Khwela's success wasKhwela’s fourth NonStop Dusi title havingpreviously tasted victory with ThomasNgidi, Thulani Mbanjwa (Build it/Williams

Hunt) and Andy Birkett (Euro Steel) inrace record time in 2010, 2011 and 2013respectively.

The intrigue of taking on the challengealone has flooded Khwela and after hisbronze medal effort in the recent Dusi Canoe Marathon, the “Dusi Darling” has confirmed he will now “frontup” to the uniquetask.

"I told myself 'this year you just haveto be a man about [paddling NonStop Du

si on your own],” said Khwela."I'm a bit scared because it's a long way

to try to race on your own but I want to testmyself."

“Whilecomingintotheclashasdefending champ and with four titles under hisbelt Khwela might go into the race as thenatural prerace favourite.

“However, the young star is not puttingany pressure on himself to make it winnumber five.

"I'm just going there to have fun in myK1.

“I love paddling my K1 and while I enjoyDusi a lot, I love the NonStop because youget to push yourself to the limit for a wholeday and then it's over.

"I just want to enjoy myself and experience what paddling a NonStop Dusi on myown is like," he added.
