THE latest crime statistics releasedlast week has revealed that police inTongaatarehaving tocontendwith farmore than they did last year.

Crime across almost all categorieshas increased, some more sharplythanothers. Themostdrastic increaseis miscellaneous theft that went from399 to 541 reported incidents.

Hijacking also steeply increasedfrom13 reported cased to awhopping45.Robberyatresidentialpremisesal-soprovedpoor goingup from37casesto 69.

The more serious categories werealsoworryingwithmurder increasingby12reportedcases from17to29inci-dents.

Sexual crimes also sky rocketedfrom 93 to 145 incidents.

Attemptedmurder stayed at a rela-tive norm for Tongaat at 40 cases.

Assault with intent to do grievousbodily harm also sharply rose from157 to 217 reported cases. Commonassault however, outdid this numberrising by almost 100 reported casesfrom 296 to 392.

Robbery with aggravating circum-stanceswas also extremely high going

from 161 to 303 cases. On the positive side, arson was

down from 11 cases to just nine thisyear.

Crimes that were detected as a re-sult of police detection proved a greatincreaseinthedrugrelatedsectorwithdrug related crime doubling from 476to 808 cases.

Speaking to the Weekly, stationcommander Colonel Santha Moodleysaid the community should not bealarmed at the numbers.

“Most of these statistics come fromlast year.Wehad realised early on thatcrimewasonthe increaseandwehaveput mechanisms in place to ensurethereisadefinite improvementinsafe-ty in our community.”

Moodley said that from April thisyear, crime had dramatically reduced.

“There have been vast improve-ments in major sectors of crime. Forexample, the number for drug relatedincidents reflectspolicebeingactive intheir duties clamping down on thesetypes of incidents.

“We have also stepped up our pa-trols and have beenmaking a numberof arrests thathave led toadecreaseofcrime.”

Moodley said the greatest asset the

police servicehashad this year is com-munity participation.

“Thisisthemaincontributingfactorto us bringing crime down. The com-munityhasworkedwellwithusaswellas thevarioussectorcommandersandCPFs to ensure we are well informedand working toward the well being ofthe community. There is no need to beafraid of numbers. Themoreweworktogether the better.”

MF councillor Praggie Padayacheeechoed the same sentiments sayingcommunity participation was vital.

“CPFmeetingsarebeingheldinsec-tors and the SAPS go out of their waytoensureby legislation thesemeetingsare held in order. I attend these meet-ings however, I am disappointed withcommunity representation. It is im-portant that we all become part of thisprocess.

“Notices of these meetings havebeen publicised in local media and bycommunity attending these meetingsthey have the opportunity to report in-cidents in there are and also have theopportunitytointeractdirectlywithre-spective sectormanagersof SAPS.TheCPF is established for community par-ticipation and becomes the watchdogof SAPS and service delivery.”

Letter to a parent seeking morefor her daughter:

Dear Parent,The educational choices you

make for yourdaughter nowhavea great impact on the rest of herlife.Youwork inacall centre, withunusual working hours, becauseyou have no other choices.

The educational pathways youopen for your daughter now cangive her more freedom of choicelater.

She could be able to choosefrom becoming a teacher, lawyer,or doctor. Our children are thegateway to breaking the cycle ofpoverty and disadvantage.

You as a parent have to do ev-erything in your power to give herbetter choices than you have hadfor yourself.

I have assessed your daugh-ter’s math ability and concludedthat shehasadelayof at least fouryears to catch up on.

Just in case you have forgottenwhatwespokeaboutintheassess-ment interview, letmeremindyouof what Kip McGrath Education

Centres can do for her.We target her problem areas,

useouruniqueteaching methods, give her individual attention, giveher practice to consolidate herconcepts, know how to move herforwardandbackward inconcep-tual learning, offer her computer-based learning, build up her self-motivation and confidence levels,offerherasafeandwarmenviron-ment conducive to learning.

Can any other tuition serviceoffer you that?

The choices youmake for yourchild nowwill determinewhethershe has a brighter future or not.

THERE arethingsaboutlivinginDurban, and indeed in SouthAfrica, that are undeniably re-

pulsive. The volume of whoonga-ad-dicted beggars at traffic lights withhangdog expressions and theirbranded clothing hidden under anearby bush. The rapists, murderersand thieves.TheZumas.The fact thatthe only car one can buy in pink is aSuzuki Alto. I could carry on.

Over the course of writing this oft-cynical column, I havebeen toldbyatleast one reader to packmy bags andleave, or stopwhingring about SouthAfrica.

Well, senders of hate-mail, today Iam going to extol the virtues of ourprodigious province and our so-

called rainbow nation as a whole.I do not intend tomake this sound

likea tourismbrochure, but ifanyonewere to be inclined to hire me as atravel writer based on this piece, thedoor to negotiation is always open.

Like an awkward conversation, Iam going to start with the weather. While our city swelters under hair-raising humidity (literally, hair rais-ing).However, I realisedafter visitingSingaporea fewyearsagothatsayingDurban is humid is like calling a gar-den snake a deadly beast. It could beso, so much worse.

Salaries, one might argue, are farhigher in Johannesburg than in ourrelatively sleepy town. This is true, and somebody doing your job in Jo-hannesburgmayearn30%morethanyou.

This after they fight traffic 80%longer than you do, pay obsceneamounts of money for their pieces ofpropertyneighbouringaminedump, and pay etolls because the gantries, amazinglyenough, havestillnotbeenpulled down by vigilantes.

In living this lifestyle in the city ofgold, they manage to save a smallamount of money each year. Andwhat do they do with it? Spend it ontheir annual trip to the coast, wherethey will holiday for a week or two inDurbanorMargate, clamouringwiththeir counterparts to claim a spot onthe beach or get their kid onto one ofthe rides at uShaka Marine World.

Capetonians boast of the cleanli-nessof theircity,whichcannotbedis-puted. They speak lovingly of thewhite sand on their beaches, wherethewater is so cold that by sticking ina toe, it is possible to freeze off a nip-ple.Admittedly,CapeTowndoeshaveone thing that we don’t - amountain.

IfanyoneevertellsyouthatBloem-fontein, Pietermaritzburg or Pofad-der are better places to live thanDur-ban, be charitable and book them anappointment with the next availablepsychiatrist.

Within a three-hour drive of ourfront doors, we have game reserves, thebig five,mountainsandmorenat-ural beauty than could arguably be

found anywhere in the world. Wehave beaches, waves andmarkets tobe freely lain upon, surfed and ex-plored.

Our entertainment scene is im-proving in leapsandbounds, withBigConcertsactuallynot leavingusoutofTheScript’s tourwhich isplanned forearly next year. Our local comedyscene is flourishing, thanks to sometalented locals.

As a whole, South Africa (touch

wood) seems to be a low priority forthe terrorist organisations whichthreaten the USA, the UK, and otherfirst world nations. Thus far, in deal-ingwith our own problems, we seemto have largely avoided the inadvert-entor intentionaloffendingofanyno-table religious group.

Asanation, wehavebeen throughhell. Some of us are still suffering im-measurable hardships. But, Durban-ites, we suffer our lot under thewarmth of the sunshine and sur-rounded by people so laid back theyare almost lying down. Things couldbe worse.

Happy Heritage Day, Durban.

The joys of being a Durbanite

EVERYONE depends on their vi-sion inmore ways than they real-ise. Without healthy vision, ourabilities are drastically affected.

THE month of Purtassi provides an opportunity to tilt the balance in the mind between righteous and unrighteousness.

Hindus of South Indian descentthroughout the world have embarked ona monthlong period of austerities andsacrifices in honour of Lord Venketeshwaraor Perumal as He is referred to in Tamil Nadu.

Swami Vivekananda took to the worldstage and declared that “we are all potentially divine beings” and that “the world is

a gymnasium where we come to work outall our past karmas until we are able tomanifest our divine nature”.

It is rather unfortunate though, thatman has become so preoccupied with "artha" and "kama" (wealth and pleasure)that he has made little progress in understanding himself. In this hightech age wehave become armchair citizens.

We think just as we ‘remotecontrol’ almost everything or utilise our fancy gadgets to conduct most of our activities from

the comfort of our couches, that liberationand realisation will also come at the touchof a button. Just as it is necessary to cleanour brassware and other jewellery that oxidises on contact with the atmosphere; itis necessary to cleanse the mind, heart andintellect that are dulled by contact withworldly activities.

Man has become mechanical in his lifeand utterly controlled by the senses.

Hence this period of austerities, fastingand sacrifices helps to cleanse and focusthe mind away from the senses and dwellon theinner divine realityofours. It isatimewhenwecantrytoactaccordingtoour truenature that is to live by truth, to showcompassion, to exhibit peace through ouractions and love all as the very manifesta

tion of God.This can be accomplished by regular

prayer, silent meditation and contemplation on Narayana as the centre of our beings. One should not miss the opportunityto feed the poor, help the sick and spreadpeace and love in the name of Govinda.

We must also pray for strength of mindand the will to be able to continue thesepractices even beyond the month of Purtassi. As we prepare to clean our households, bring out the new kitchen utensilsand make the external environment aspure as possible for the observance of Purtassi; let us also cleanse and prepare theheart, body and mind to shine with the brilliance and purity of Govinda who is the indweller of our hearts.

May that allpervading Narayana whois worshipped as Venketeshwara in thismonth bestow His grace upon the worldand help us, His ignorant children, to raiseour consciousness to the divine level, ourmy sincere prayer. Let us all help each otherand eradicate the 'asuric' tendencies anddevelop men and women with pure intellect and elevated minds suspended in loveand unity so that the golden age of peace, harmony and love shall begin now.

We wish all devotees and seekers of theself who are observing this holy month, strength and peace. The Shree VeerabogaEmperumal Temple will be observing allSaturdays with the reading of the Veeraboga Vasantharayar Sarithuram on the final Saturday. All are invited to attend.

Shree Veerboga Templecommemorates Purtassi

AMONG the South African Tamils thismonth long fast is the most important onededicated to Maha Vishnu, who takes onthe form of Lord Perumalswamy.

Puratassi is observed during midSeptember to midOctober respectively. MahaVishnu is known by many names includingNarayana, Venketeshwara, Perumalswa

mi, Srinivasa, Govinda, Balaji and manymore. Thousands of people around theworld go on a pilgrimage to the ThirumaliHills in Tirupati, in South India during thisperiod to seek the blessing of the SupremeGovinda.

For the many who cannot afford to goon this pilgrimage, prayer in worship of the

favourite foods in dedication to the Supreme Lord. This fast should not be like atorturous burden. The benefits of this fastare inconceivable if the fast is properly observed. While the daily observances are observed, Saturdays (due to time, place andcircumstances) is reserved for prayer activities.

On this day most people observe theNirjala fast, where not a single drop of water is taken. In the morning preparationsare underway for the prayer in the evening.

When preparing the food items thestrictest care is taken to ensure cleanlinessand piety. At most temples the GarudanFlag is hoisted on the first Saturday, indicative of the beginning of the fast.

Special rituals pertaining to Lord Vishnu are conducted from religious books likethe Garuda Parthu and the ThirunaamamPaadhigam.

Devotees call out Govinda! Govinda!Govinda! In praise of the Supreme Maha

Vishnu. A Naamam is adorned on the forehead of devotees which is symbolic of LordVishnu’s two feet in his reclined pose, which is in the shape of a capital “U” inwhite and the Thrisnam (in red) in the centre of the “U” – which represents MotherLuxmi.

The Shri Siva Subramaniar Alayam ofUmdloti Drift Verulam invites all devoteesto attend their Puratassi prayers from the20 September – 11 October. NavarathriPoojay will be observed from the 24 September – 2 October, where devotees cansit in the Hawan and the tying of Maha Saraswathi strings will be done.

TOYOTA has invested 85 million euros, engineered1 000 new parts and spent 576 000 man hours refining the new Yaris.

After research conducted across several platformsincluding press analysis, customer clinics and dealerfeedback, Toyota Europe identified three key areaswhere the current generation Yaris scored highly –outstanding roominess, powertrain efficiency andstandard features, making it the smart choice.

Eschewing supermini stereotypes for a highly distinctiveexterior, thenewYarisseesthemostdramaticexecution of Toyota’s contemporary frontal designlanguage to date with sharpedged detailing.

The narrow upper and large grilles, a hallmark ofToyota’s current design, are present but they nowmerge at the point of the Toyota emblem to form apowerful cross shape.

Eight exterior colours are available, including newAvanteGarde Bronze Metallic (petrol models only)and Pacific Blue Metallic. Lava Red Metallic and PearlWhite Metallic are Hybrid exclusive colours.

The upper instrument panel has been made thinner, and the upper surface of the driver’s instrumentbinnacle has been restyled to give a slimmer appearance.

New seat trims are provided, with a new fabricpattern and colours. Befitting its rangetopper status,

the Hybrid is decked out in a leather and cloth combo. The new Yaris is available with three engine choi

ces – two petrol, and a hybrid. The full hybrid system,a first for this segment, benefits from adjustmentswhich have brought its CO2 emissions down further, from 88 to 82g/km. Extremely fuel efficient (3,6 litresin the combined cycle) and clean (virtually zero NOxand particulate emissions), this innovative powertrain is at the cutting edge of technology.

Renowned for its nearsilent running, comfort andeasy handling, especially around town where the hybrid system allows the car to be driven for certain distances in electric mode, or with limited use of the petrol engine. The auto CVTbased transmission adds tothe allround smooth, quiet and comfortable drivingexperience.

Yaris Hybrid’s powertrain features a fourcylinderAtkinson cycle 1,497cc engine that is 50mm shorterthan the 1.8litre unit used by Prius and Auris Hybrid,it is also 17kg lighter. Its features include a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system, an electric waterpump, a lowfriction distribution chain, an intakemanifold made of a composite material and a compact exhaust manifold.

The new Yaris has a more rigid upper and lowerbody structure, which offers a more direct and linearresponse to steering inputs. — Supplied.
