Liquor stores nowopen on Sundays>> MEC: Residentsnow have a choiceSHANNON HOPKINS

NEVER again shall a cravingfor a glass of wine on a Sun-day evening go unsatisfied.

Local liquorstoreshadtheir firstSunday of sales on 2March, whichwas reportedly well supported.

ThischangeintheKwaZulu-Na-tal Liquor Licensing Act was an-nouncedbyMECofKwaZulu-NatalEconomic Development and Tour-ism Mike Mabuyakhulu last week. Some say they are not in favour ofthenewLiquorActstipulations, butstores say at least the public willhave a choice.

Tops Lifestyle manager Lor-raineGovendersaid theannounce-mentwasverysuddenandtheteamhad toquickly rally staff to be avail-able for work on Sunday, from10amto3.30pm,asper legislation.

“Itwas quite a shock as itwas sosudden, but wewill give staff othertime off for working on Sundaysnow. The store was actually reallybusy for the first Sunday shift lastweek,” said Govender.

“I think some of the religiousgroupswill not be pro the new law,

but at least people can choose topurchase or not now,” she added.

In his speech, Mabuyakhulusaid previous legislature had failedto address the economic aspects ofthe industry, and that most peopledrank responsibly.

“Weareall aware that theabuseof liquorcontinues tobeacontribu-tory factor to many unnecessarydeaths and acts of violence in ourcountry.

“While some do abuse alcohol,themajoritydouseresponsibly,”he

said.“The old laws banned alcohol

sales on Sunday not just for thegreater good of the community, butin furtherance of narrow sectarianand religious interest,” addedMabuyakhulu.

Hundreds of devotees from Tongaat thronged to the Sabha to listento a line up of distinguished speakerswho enthralled the crowds with inspirational messages on the significanceandphilosophybehindthecelebrationof Maha Shivarathri and every otherfast and festival on the Hindu calendar.

ICECREAM. Spider. Vibrant. Thosethree words created an effect on yourthoughts, energy levels and your body.

They all caused a certain reactionin your body, they either made youcringe, feel fearful, or happy. Every wordcreates its own specific feeling in yourbrain which affects your body and energy levels.

People tend to underestimate the

influence of words and the impact theyhave on our beliefs and on our lives.

Do you know of someone who complains about everything?

Do you get frustrated, annoyed andfeel drained after speaking with them?

This is because every word you hearcreatesachemicalreactioninyourbrainand body.

This specific chemical reaction willcreate either a boost in your energy levels, or drain your energy. This is why positive people make us feel better whenwe are around them, and people withnegativeoutlooksmakeusfeeldrained.

We can also achieve these positiveand negative energy levels on our own

by being aware of our thoughts andthe choice of words we use when wespeak.

Each word you speak creates its ownneuron network in your body every timeyou speak it.

Even if you just think of a word, yourneuron network already begins to makeconnections, and fires the entire neuronnetwork linked to that word.

Keep away from using negativephrases like: “I can’t,” “It’s impossible,”or “I’ll/they’ll never change.” If you usethese words and phrases on a daily basis, you will experience the same chemical reaction in your body that will influence your emotional state every day of

your life. We can use this method to alsoheal and energise ourselves, by creating positive thoughts on a daily basis.

If you want to change your life andcreate a future filled with love, laughterand dreams coming true, you need toconsciously select your words.

By changing your habitual words, you can change your emotional patterns. This then begins to mold your actions and ultimately, your life’s destiny.

IT’S Oscar season in South Africa and this one does not comewith all the glitz and glamourpresented at the Academy Awardsversion in the United States.

The Oscar Pistorius case, whichhas its own channel on DStv, is

in your face, whether you likeit or not. There is a blow by blowaccount on social media sites, theCarte Blanche channel is breakingthe story down piece by piece ontheir 24hour channel and every local news site is dominated by thetrial.

South Africa’s ‘trial of the century’ has begun and no matterwhat the outcome, citizens are interested in some aspect of this story. However, before Oscar seasonbegan Pravin Gordhan deliveredthe budget speech and didn’t surprise many with the results.

The word of the day being ‘increase’ petrol (again), sin taxes(alcohol and smoking) and theweakening rand. Gordhan also

said that government’s focus in2014 is to eliminate wastefulspending and corruption. SouthAfricans are feeling the pinch withthe number of increases andmany are looking for a silver lining.Locally, residents have complainedabout the lack of proper publictransport systems and have nocheaper option to get to places inthe interim eThekwini is trying toremedy their ongoing bus problems. Judging by some of the comments on social media, some havedecided to stop sitting around andcomplaining and are ready tomake a mark come election time inMay.

I WOULD like to tell you about my experience of whatIbelieveisabusivebehaviourintheworkplace, particularly in a business known as a “onemanband businesses of all types”.

These are the kind of people who profess to runtheir business on a fair and respectful platform towards their staff, but in actual fact they don’t do this.

I can give you firsthand experience of the mosthorrific incidents from employers towards their staff:torment, shouting, accusatory, sadistic and downright bullish and cruel behaviour. However, the minute a customer walks through the door, the employerturns into a smiling and charming owner.

This brings me to the next factor which is salariesand bonuses for the staff. Examples of low salariesbeing paid for very long hours of work with no formof incentive is the call of the day by the employer.

For some reason someemployersthinkthatmaking their staff work for 13 days in a row is acceptable.

Please do your homework on your prospectivenew employer before you embark on your new career.

I myself have been an owner of a very successfulbusiness. I am fortunate enough to know both sidesof the working situation.

With my given successful experience as an employer, I know that the employers whom I have hadto deal with recently have a lot to learn from the employees, who could very well be far more competent.

GRAEME Smith, one of the most dogged batsmenof his generation, stunned South Africa on Mondayby announcing he will retire from international cricket at the end of the ongoing third Test against Australia at Newlands.

The 33yearold captain told team mates afterthe third day's play, catching all unaware, includingCricket South Africa (CSA) chiefs.

His departure comes after arguably the world'sgreatest allrounderJacquesKallisquit theSouthAfrica Test team in December.

"This has been the most difficult decision I haveever had to make in my life. It's a decision that I havebeen considering since my ankle surgery in April lastyear," Smith said in a statement released by CSA.

"I have a young family to consider, and I felt thatretiring at Newlands would be the best way to endit because I have called this place home since I was18 years old."

Smith a veteran of 117 tests, 109 of those as captain, and is the world record holder for the most Testwins as skipper of a fiveday team with 53.

In the leadup to the seriesdeciding third Testagainst Australia, Smith had spoken of still wantingto achieve milestones in the game but having managed just 42 runs in five innings in the series, his formhas been wretched.

"I have been fortunate to have had many highs, amongst them leading and being part of the besttest team in the world. I will cherish these memoriesfor the rest of my life,” he said.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I bidmy career a fond yet sad farewell," addedSmith.

Stunned CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgatpraised Smith for his service to the game.

"Although Graeme's decision to retire from allforms of international cricket comes as a surprise toall of us, we must respect him for deciding to calltime," Lorgat said.

"Following the recent retirement of Jacques Kallis from Test cricket, there is no doubt that we arenow ready to move into a new era and it is our jobto build on the solid foundations that these greatplayers leave behind."

The veteran opener made his Test debut againstAustralia in Cape Town in March 2002 and was surprisingly handed the captaincy aged 22 a yearlater.

The most capped Test captain in the history ofthe game has amassed 9,262 test runs at an averageof 48.49 with 27 hundreds and 38 halfcenturies.

His highest test score of 277 at Edgbaston in 2003was followed a week later by 259 at Lord's as theEnglish bowlers scratched their heads over how todismiss a limpetlike left hander whose determination made up for any lack of flair.

He also played 197 oneday internationals and 33Twenty20 internationals but failed to rid the Proteasof their choker tag when it came to major international limited over's tournaments.

Lorgat said that the Proteas captain had helped

write a glorious chapterin South Africa's cricketing history.

"Iwouldlike us to remember Graeme Smithfor his nerves of steeland his matchwinning performancesthat were synonymous with some ofthe most remarkablefourth innings victorychases of all time." hesaid.

"These includedsetting up the 414 runschase against Australiaat Perth and his seriesclinching innings atEdgbaston in 2008, notto mention the unbeaten century the last timehe faced Australia atNewlands in 2011.

"His role in settingup the famous 438 winover Australia in 2006wasalsoaperformancenever to be forgotten,"he added.
