They will be tested on Saturday 30 August at Stanger High School in KwaDukuza to see who takes the title of queen or king Bee. Media24 Local Newspapers KZN has partnered with the Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier to roll out the popular competition throughout the province. The spelling bee originally started in Zululand, and is enjoying its fifth year there. Outstanding spellers from previ- ously disadvantaged schools stand to walk away with thousands of rands in prizes, including cash for the top spellers and their teachers, books for top spellers and their schools, as well as goodie bags for all teachers and spellers. A former teacher himself, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said it is criti- cal that the talent and potential of the youth is fully developed and har- nessed to guarantee the continuous socio-economic development of the province and the country. “In doing so, we will ensure that we deal decisively with the triple chal- lenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality,” he said earlier this year. Pupils have had almost two months to learn the words that were released on 20 June. The first leg of this year’s competi- tion was held in Richards Bay a few weeks ago, where 16-year-old Wendy Goqo from Mningi High spelled her way to the top spot and was crowned the 2014 champion for the Zululand region. On Saturday, spellers are required to take their birth certificates or ID books to the event and should be ac- companied by no more than two sup- porters, one of which must be an Eng- lish teacher. Pupils and schools who have not entered through offi- cial channels prior to the event will not be al- lowed to take part. For those schools who have entered, registration takes place at 8am sharp. Spellers need to be in the hall and seated by 8.30am. The competition starts at 9am. For more information on the event, call Vusi Mthalane on 079 389 5205 or visit www.kzn spellingbee.co.za More information is also available on the official Facebook page: KZN Spelling Bee. The Coastal Weekly wishes all spellers the best of luck. Nkosibumvu Secondary School pupils will be participating in the Spelling Bee. No housing handover...again>> RDP homeowners once again denied occupancy due to “bad crowd”

KAVEEL SINGH

A JOYOUS event turned chaoticafter disgruntled residents dis-ruptedtheTrenanceParkhous-

ing handover once again, on Friday. The event was interrupted for the

secondtimein less thanayearbyahailof paint bullets, stun grenades andtoyi-toying.

A small group of Thandanani resi-dents claim that they have “been un-fairly left out of the chance to ownhomes”.

According to Sipho Mlondo, a localbusinessman and ward committeemember, the demarcation issue hasbeen central to the uproar of a groupof residents who refuse to let peoplemove into the RDP homes.

Mlondo saidwhenparts ofward59were merged into ward 60, tenants ofinformal homes in Thandanani were

told theycouldnotapply forhomesbe-cause only informal home ownerswould be allowed to do so.

“However, people intheneighbour-ingChubbies informal settlementwhowere renters were allowed to applyand they are now getting homes. Thepeople complained about this at thetimeandwere told togivenames to theold councillor.

“But nowwe hear that he did noth-ing with those names and that thesepeople,around90,arestillnotgoingtoget homes. How can this happen? Wejust will not allow it. This is becomingpolitical and people were shot and in-jured in a big way. This is unfair. Wewant justice,” said Mlondo.

Ward 60 councillor Chocks Ar-unajallam said that originally 314names were registered for homes andheavy rains delayed the project for thepast five years.

“Wehavebuilt298homesandthereare many people waiting to move in.There are a small number of peoplefrom Chubbies, less than 20. Unfortu-nately theprotesters are insisting theywill not allow the project to move for-ward if theChubbies residentsaregiv-en homes.”

When the Weekly reporter arrivedat the scene, enforcement officeswerefiring paint bullets and stun grenadeswere thrown at a rowdy crowd of peo-ple.Closer inspectionrevealedthat thehousing enforcements teamswere re-moving items from homes.

Theseitemswereallegedlyfromthegroup of protesters who would not al-low the handover to take place.

Chubbies resident Cynthia Pillaysaid she is “tired” of the constant de-lays.

“Yes, they may have issues withwhatever is going on, but this is unfairon us. They broke the doors of thesehomes and just moved in last nightwhen they realisedwewould be givenour homes in the morning.

“We have also experienced a largeamount of intimidation from Thanda-nani people who are telling us that wewillnevergetpeaceorourhomes.Likemany in this country who are disad-vantaged,we simplywant abetter life.I have an old, sickmum who I am tak-ing care off. Why can they not just letus live in peace?”

Housing allocation official ComfortGumede was not available for com-ment at the time of going to press.

Training for LIV mothers>> Foster mothers at village benefit from CPR workshop

WEEKLY REPORTER

AN experienced team of nursesfromNetcareUmhlangaHospi-tal recently trained 25 foster

mothers in cardiopulmonary resusci-tation (CPR) at LIV Village - a centrethat provides residential care for or-phaned and vulnerable children – inVerulam.

Dr Burton Shinners, general man-ager of Netcare Umhlanga Hospital, said LIV Village, which is situated inHazelmere is a “remarkable projectthat is doing outstandingworkwithinthe community, particularly in caringfor orphaned children within thegreater Durban area”.

“We felt that the foster mothers ofLIVVillagewould benefit fromhavingaworking knowledge of CPR,which isa useful technique in many emergen-cies, inwhich someone's breathing orheartbeat has stopped. One just neverknowswhen such skills, which can belifesaving, may be needed within thecommunity,” said Shinners.

LIV Village is a cluster of homeswhere orphaned and vulnerable chil-dren are brought up in a nurturing, family environment.

The homes are built in clusters ofeight surrounding communal play ar-

eas. Each of the homes has a trainedfostermotherwho loves and providesphysicalcareforsixorphanedandvul-nerable children.

“The training team from thehospi-tal,whichwas led by Sister Cheryl Pil-lay, was inspired by the caring housemothers, and delighted to be able toequip themwith CPR skills. I think themothers and nursing team proved tobe kindred spirits,” added Shinners.

CaritaNeethling of LIVVillage saidthat the foster mothers were mostgrateful for the training they receivedfrom the nursing team.

“They said they found it invaluableand empowering,” she said.

“Assistance from organisationssuch asNetcareUmhlangaHospital isalwaysmost welcome and it has beenmost gratifying for us to have formeda relationship with the facility thisyear.

“Inaddition toproviding this train-ing, the hospital has also sponsoredbeds, food, trays, a jungle gym, sup-plies and equipment for our medicalclinic,” said Neethling.

LIV Village, established in 1997,was thebrainchildof formerSouthAf-rican cricketer Tich Smith.

It enjoys the support of many well-known KwaZulu-Natal sportsmen

and businesses, and today consists ofno fewer than 150 homes supporting1 000 children.

It includes an early childhood de-velopment centre, and primary andsecondary schools. A farm and cloth-ing factory ensure that the project isself-sustaining, whilst providing em-ployment opportunities for membersof the surrounding community.

LIVVillage aims to place orphanedandvulnerable childrenof the greaterDurbanarea intoanurturingenviron-ment with a foster mother as well aswith schooling to educate them.

“If these children are equippedwith essential moral values and lifeskills, theywill growuptobeagenera-tion that will influence positivechange in SouthAfrica,” saidDr Shin-ners.

“Netcare Umhlanga Hospital isconstantly looking at ways to empow-er and assist the communities weserve. We have been greatly im-pressedbytheworkbeingundertakenbyLIVVillage andhope that the assis-tancewehaveprovidedwill beof ben-efit to the organisation and its people.Wewish this inspiring initiative everysuccess into the future, as it deservesto grow from strength to strength,”added Shinners.

“ABOUT one million pupils were failing atschools every year and there are no easy solu-tions to the problem. Holding back pupils dis-couraged them, causing thousands to dropoutof the education system entirely.” This state-ment was made by education minister Angie

Motshekga at the opening of NATU’s TeacherDevelopment Institute in Newcastle.

By the time children who are underachiev-ing academically reachMatric, it is sometimestoo late tochange thepatternof failureanddis-illusionment.

These children are destined for alife of disappointment, unemploy-ment and no academic future. Whenschoolresultsarelow, parentsneedtorealise that the time to act is immedi-ately.

The history of theWonderbag>> ‘For every Wonderbag bought, one is donated to a less fortunatefamily’

IN June Natural Balance, manu-facturers of the non-electric slowcooker — the Wonderbag —

opened a factory in Tongaat. This has enabled the brand to

manufacture its own products in-stead of outsourcing the manufac-turing of this popular South Africanexport.

The Wonderbag is a revolution-ary, heat-retention cooker that al-lows food that has been brought to

the boil by conventionalmethods, tocontinue to cook for up to 12 hours, without using additional energysource.

SarahCollins, CEOofWonderbagsays having this factory will havemany benefits — it allows ownerscontrol over the quality of the itemsproduced as well as the flexibility tointroducenew lines, like aprons andoven gloves, to the existing product.

“One of themajor benefits is local

jobcreation, whichisinkeepingwithWonderbag’s ethos of assisting un-derprivileged South Africans.

“Wespecifically chose tobaseouroperation on the North Coast be-cause of the collapse of the CMT in-dustry in thearea, sowewereawareof the desperate need for jobs andwanted to help in anywaywe could. We are also looking at adding newline items in an effort to createmorejobs.”

Not only is theWonderbaga revo-lutioninthekitchen, it isalsoarecipefor social change. First World coun-trieshaveembraced theWonderbagbecause of its environmental attri-butes and particularly its social con-tributions, because for every Won-derbagbought inaFirstWorldcoun-try one is donated to a less fortunatefamily in South Africa.Wonderbagwas founded in South

Africa six years ago by local entre-preneur and social activist, Collins, and the product was born out of apractical desire to continue cookingduring a bout of Eskom load shed-ding.

Since opening its doors the com-pany has grown exponentially andthisproducthascrossedbordersintooverseas markets and Wonderbags

aresoldinmanycountries, includingthe U.S. and the United Kingdom. The product was listed on Ama-zon.comin2013andsaleshavedou-bled on a monthly basis, indicatingthat it has successfully penetratedthe U.S. market.

TheTongaatregionhasalonghis-tory in the “cut make trim” industryand after the closure of a prominenttextile plant in 2004 where thou-sands of labourers were laid off, theareahasbeen indireneedof jobs forskilled and unskilled labourers. ThenewNatural Balance factory createsmuch-neededjobsfor35permanentworkers and up to 20 casual staff ona daily basis.

The newly opened factorymanu-factures4 000Wonderbagsamonthwith the potential to increase to 6000, while relying on the currentstaff complement. In recentmonths the factory start-

I RECENTLY covered the ‘Eskom Expo ForYoung Scientists North Coast’ regionalfinals at the University of Zululand. I had

been looking forward to the event since lastNovember.

Needless to say, I was very happy it wasfinally happening. When I first learned ofit, I was surprised it existed at all.

You see, last year I was running up anddown eSikhawini (my hometown) trying toestablish a science organisation to host ascience fair for the schools in the ‘loxion’ toparticipate in.

My anticipation for the science fair I attended that day quickly soured as I wentthrough the many project displays. Whilstquite a number of projects impressed me,there weren’t enough of them, particularlyfrom previously disadvantaged schools.

Look, I was not expecting to see perpetual motion machines or someone disprovingthe general theory of relativity, but I waslooking forward to projects that showedsome real scientific prowess.

You see, science is not about being right,it isabouttryingtofindatruthinasystematic way and sometimes this takes great perseverance, a quality these two young scientists displayed.

It was quite sad to see how a lot of thesubstandard projects were from “previouslydisadvantaged schools” (a euphemism forrural and township schools that were deniedproper laboratories because the Africanchild had “no business learning maths andscience”).

A number of them were not science projects at all, instead they were cutnpasteinserts from the Internet and did not ask oranswer any scientific questions, as required. It may be the awkward nerd in me, but Ifound this incredibly sad.

The science fair is a great initiative anda very important event in any young scientist and engineer's life, which I believe couldmake or break the idea of science at theearly stage.

Not all of us will become scientists, butI believe that it is important to have a community of individuals who understand andappreciate the scientific method. Wouldn’tit just be a better world if we were all scien

tifically literate?Anyway, when 1994 ushered in the new

democratic regime, a new education systemwas introduced so that a pupil in kwaDlangezwa and another in Arboretum studythe same chemistry because they are nowboth considered equal.

It seems that this is not the case. You see,it took centuries to reenforce the idea thatAfrican pupils are less inclined to understand science and mathematics in theminds of the township schools’ pupils andteachers alike.

We must also admit, however, that science and mathematics is not yet seen asa viable career path for many parents toadvisetheirchildren topursue. It is,however, still up to communities (parents, teachersthe SGBs) to take science and mathematicseducation seriously.

Thiscolumnshouldalsoserveasmyantiprocrastination effort at not being anothernaysayer who sees “the problem” and doesnot propose a solution. My intention is towork with schools in communities such asin eSikhawini with their science fair entriesfor the coming year.

Hopefully, this will be one of many initiatives I will be involved in, in terms of improving science education in our socalled township and rural schools.

Interested? Call me. I would be morethan happy to see how and where I can help.

SIBAYA Casino and Entertainment Kingdom has beenrated tops in a survey by Professional ManagementReview (PMR), a wellread South African publicationfor business executives and decision makers.

The complex, which includes a casino, conferencefacilities, and two quality hotels, received the DiamondArrow Award in the category, Business Sector:Casinos / Entertainment Centres in KwaZuluNatal.

A DiamondArrow Award is the highest accoladethat can be achieved by companies in that category.Surveyrespondents – which included government officials and corporate representatives, including CEOs,businessowners, and directors based in KZN – ratedSibaya highly across all indicators. Overall, Sibayaachieved a rating of 4.20 out of a possible 5.00.

The purpose of the survey is to profile KZN as agrowth point, potential investment area and tourismand business destination for local and internationalinvestors.

It also serves to measure companies, institutions, government entities and individuals on their contribution to economic growth and development of the

province. The awards are the culmination of this research

process whereby companies and institutions are rated based on respondents perceptions with a strongfocus on evaluating and measuring customer serviceand customer satisfaction.

“We are obviously delighted that Sibaya has beenacknowledged as a leading company and an economic and community influencer in the KZN region. Thatwereceivedsuchanexcellentrating, basedontheperceptions of PMR’s professional readership, is a greatsource of pride.

“The award bears testimony to our employees’commitment to service excellence, quality, professionalism, and innovation. As ambassadors, livingout the values of Sun International, they have helpedbuild Sibaya into a respected brand and preferred leisure and entertainmentdestination.

“We are focused on continual improving and raising the bar to ensure that Sibaya remains a respectedcorporate citizen, and a premiumrated destination,”said Belinda Jelf, the marketing manager at Sibaya.
