This in itself is no extraordinary circum- stance for a hospital, but according to an anonymous source, it would appear the foe- tus was allegedly found in a linen closet – neatly wrapped and very much not properly disposed of. The hospital has since emphatically de- nied any knowledge of the incident that, if true, could constitute negligence on the their part. Hospital public relations manager Randal Pedro said the hospital adheres to strict leg- islative rules regarding the disposal of hu- man tissue, as well as the rules regarding pa- tient confidentiality. Strict policies “In terms of legislative framework, a foe- tus is regarded as human tissue and in the unfortunate event that it is aborted, disposal thereof must be performed in terms of pre- scribed legislative guidelines,” Pedro said. “We accordingly confirm that as a li- censed institution we adhere to strict poli- cies relating to the management and eventu- al disposal of human tissue. “We therefore advise that at no point in time was any human tissue found on our premises that could not be accounted for,” he stated. However, the source is adamant that not only was the deceased foetus found by clean- ers, but it was neatly wrapped and “buried in the soft linen”. “We believe it was an abortion and that the foetus would not have had a normal life,” the source alleged. Pedro said even if there had been any addi- tional information about the incident, the hospital would have had to take into account patient confidentiality, stating that “. . . all patients’ information is strictly protected in terms of the Protection of Personal Informa- tion Act”. No foul play Bellville police on Thursday dispatched officials to the hospital to enquire about the incident. Police spokesperson Captain Fienie Nimb said no foul play was suspected. “The body of a foetus found in such cir- cumstances after a medical abortion does not constitute a criminal offence. It is seen as an internal matter of that hospital,” she said. “When you take into account the tradi- tions and rituals of some black and Somali or Muslim citizens, if it had indeed been a medical abortion, these citizens would insist on having the body of the foetus for religious purposes,” Nimb said. She said it had happened before that a foe- tus was found on the seat of a car, “but there was no criminal intent”. She said many foreign nationals attended the Melomed Hospital in Voortrekker Road. “If it had been a legal medical abortion at the hospital, that would explain the neatly wrapped foetus and the circumstances in which the foetus was said to have been found,” she said. “However, police cannot confirm such an incident.” Cape Town’s most handsome hound and feisty feline has been found! So says the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (CoGH SPCA) after the 2014 SPCA Royal Canin Mutt and Meow of the Year ceremony was held last Friday 15 August. In the picture is winning mutt Shaggy with owner Arnold Spangenberg, from Bellville. The winning cat, or “Meow” , was Tigger, owned by Sheira Pragt from Fish Hoek. The ceremony, also a fund-raiser for the CoGH SPCA, saw René Hugo’s dog Peanut bring in R4 320 and Courtnay Craul’s cat Mac collecting R2 220. The competion honours dogs and cats found in desperate circumstances and given a second lease (and leash) on life. Shaggy was thrown from a truck and Tigger knocked over by a car. Both were left for dead before being loved, cared for and nursed back to health by their respective humans. From mangy mutt to top dog
