    HIS IS NOT UWC.

These were the direct words in

uppercase in a statement of the

University of the Western Capes vice-chan-

cellor after he and his executive team were

held hostage on campus on Friday.

Prof Tyrone Pretorius and the universi-

tys senior management were forced to re-

main in their offices by protesting students.

The same group of students apparently in-

timidated fellow students in the universitys

residences before going on a rampage of the

    universitys administration buildings, caus-

    ing serious structural damage.

The group, led by eight students, were to

meet with the university leadership and the

student representative council (SRC) on Fri-

day, citing their desire to just have their

voices heard in the aftermath of the nation-

    al #FeesMustFall campaign.

    Security staff attacked

On Friday, however, Pretorius released a

statement saying the students acted violent-

ly prior to themeeting taking place. The uni-

    versitys chancellor, Archbishop Stanley

Makgoba, was to mediate the meeting.

We were in the process of arranging a

    conversation between the Archbishop, this

group and myself. They are claiming this

rampage is the result of the rector not being

available for them and I reject this claim ab-

    solutely, Pretorius said.

The evidence is there that they pretended

to want to have a dialogue, but when the op-

portunity was presented to them, they went

    on a rampage.

    He explained what had transpired.

While I was briefing the Archbishop on

the objectives of the intervention, arrange-

ments were made for him and me to meet

with the SRC first and then with the leaders

of the protesting group, Pretorius said.

This arrangement was passed on to the

    protesting students, who then marched

from the student centre to the residences

    to mobilise support.

When they were refused entry at the resi-

dences, the group attacked the security

guards using bricks, belts, sticks and sjam-

    boks, Pretorius said.

    Widespread damage

Several members of our security staff

were injured one so badly that he required

    hospitalisation.

He further states the students then went

back to the student centre where they basi-

cally thrashed and vandalised the adminis-

tration building the first and second floors

of both the east and west wings, the Campus

Protection offices and the School of Govern-

    ment building.

Pretorius added there were reports of

widespread damage all over the campus.

Members of the executive council, profes-

sional staff, SRC members and I were basi-

cally trapped in the administration building

by a small militant group of students with

bricks and other weapons, Pretorius said.

The university then applied for an urgent

court order and the policewere brought onto

    the campus.

    Amemorandum from the groupwas hand-

ed to Makgoba during the fray, Pretorius

    said.

    T

he recent Changing lives for good

summit at the Parow civic centre fo-

cused on the plight of the homeless and

vagrants, and different projects that offer

    services to these marginalised people.

To date close to 700 homeless people roam

the streets of Bellville and Parow, of which

    a large number are children.

According to Janice Sparg, who heads the

    Western Cape Street Childrens forum

(WCSCF), an umbrella organisation that co-

ordinates projects with street children, one

of the biggest challenges is that there are

simply not enough foster parents for chil-

    dren in need.

Childrens homes are full. We cannot

    place children inhavens andweneedpeople

from the community to step up and make

themselves available as places of safety for

children, be it only as an overnight facility

    or longer term care.

She says Badisa Trio, acting on behalf of

    the Citys social development department,

trains people who volunteer to foster chil-

    dren in need.

In the absence of places of safety, there is

a growing number of street children and

Sparg says it is crucial that the public must

not support them by means of money, food

    or clothing on the streets.

When you see a child begging or living

on the streets, immediately call 082 227 0478

with the childs exact location. A social

worker will be dispatched to collect the

    child and assess the situation.

One programme that aims to prevent chil-

dren fromtaking to the streetshas seenposi-

tive outcomes inmore than 170 families last

    year. The Strengthening Families pro-

gramme teaches families life skills by hav-

ing sessions and workshops with children

    within their family setup.

This has been implemented in Tafelsig,

Elsies River and Fisantekraal, where close

to 170 families have been enrolled.

This programme is therapeutic and in-

teractive, there is always group facilitation

working towards a strong family, which re-

duces risky behaviour, and as a result we

find a definite increase in (good) behaviour

and development and good parenting, says

JeremyLewis of this organisation, who pre-

    sented information about the organisation

at the Changing lives for good summit.

The next roll-out will be in Ocean View and

    Langa.

He said the organisation looks at the fami-

ly as a whole, be it a family consisting of a

single parent, a grandparent or sibling rais-

ing children, families with foster parents or

blended families. We found that with one

caring parent the child is safe, he said.

The executive cannot accept that, at a uni-

versity, themessage is that if youareviolent

and destroy property, force and intimidate

others to participate in the protest, as well

as attempt to hold people hostage in build-

ings, your voices will be heard, he coun-

    tered.

We can only reactivate this process of en-

gagement once the protesting group stands

down, respects the dignity and constitution-

al rights of others and allows us to create

    an environment conducive to constructive

    engagement.

At the neighbouring CPUT, things were

quiet over the weekend, according to

    spokesperson Lauren Kansley.

    We were all quiet over the weekend;

thats why we could come back to work yes-

    terday (Monday).

She added CPUT sent out their exam plan

to students onMonday and had contingency

plans in place for the exams.

    Vice-chancellor Dr Prins Nevhutalu is-

sued a statement citing that CPUTs revised

    examinationperiodwouldbe from9Novem-

    ber until 30 November.

At a special meeting of senate held today

(Monday) a number of academic resolutions

to assist all students affected by the recent

fees protest were reached, he said.

These resolutions aremeant to assist our

students and not put them in any disadvan-

    ams for the year.

    ellville learner Lohann Roelofse re-

cently completed his coast to coast

walk for wheelchairs in aid of the

    Chaeli campaign.

His proud dad, Pierre, wrote toTygerBur-

ger to report on Lohanns big walk from

    Struisbaai to Big Bay.

What makes his sons effort so extraordi-

nary, is the fact that Lohann was born with

extra and webbed toes and fingers.

Some of the extra digits were surgically

removed soon after birth up until he was

two years old, with many more operations

    following until Lohann was 10.

The Grade 12 learner is a natural leader

and as such Lohann is currently deputy

head boy at Stellenberg High School.

He often still uses crutches and a wheel-

    chair.

    Because Lohann realised how difficult

life was for wheelchair-bound people, he

wanted to make some sort of a difference

and the idea of thewalk started taking form.

Pierre tells: The walk was completed

without any incidents and took Lohann

    from Struisbaai through Bredasdorp, Napi-

    er, Caledon, Franschhoek, Klapmuts, Dur-

banville, Stellenberg and finally Big Bay in

    Blouberg.

Lohann completed the gruelling walk of

250 km in just seven days, Pierre said.

The shortest distance he completed in

one day, was 32 km and the longest, 44 km.

At one stage itwasverydifficult for himand

he had to use his crutches and even his

    wheelchair, Pierre said.

This caused blisters on his hands, but he

    never gave up.

Pierre said during the last two days of the

walk, which took place earlier this year, Lo-

hann was greatly supported by friends and

family who walked parts of the distance

    with him.

On the last day of his walk Lohanns

route went past his school. There he had an

    overwhelming reception from learners and

    personnel, Pierre said.

There was even a placard reading Mar-

ry me, Lohann! This reception greatly mo-

    tivated him.

Lohannmanaged to gather R40 000 for the

Chaeli campaign and another R8 800 to-

    wards his schools charitable fund.

Chaelis mom and CEO of the Chaeli cam-

paign, Zelda Mycroft, had the following to

say: Children need to believe in their own

abilities so that they can contribute to their

    community.

The money will be used towards the cam-

    paigns early childhood development pro-

    grammes.

The Chaeli campaign has also made Lo-

hann a Friend of the Chaeli campaign,

which is a select group of individuals who

go above andbeyond to assist and support

    their organisation, Zelda added.

Pierre oncemore thanked the entire com-

munity who so generously opened their

hearts to Lohanns effort and the campaign.

    Coast Walk for Wheelchairs.

Here Lohann walks past his own school on his way to Bloubergstrand. His dad, Pierre, jokingly

said Lohann was even propositioned for marriage during his wonderful receptioninpassing at

    the school.

Gesin wie se vierjarige dogtertjie n

    spesiale getuienis te gee.

    DieDuToits, oorspronklik vanHopetown,

kom besoek afl by die Familia Christie-

    dogtertjie, Cheara, se wonderbaarlike her-

    stel n twee leweroorplantings.

was en vir God ges: As U haar gesond

    tiewe geelsug gehad, vertel Juan-Mari.

Cheara was gelys vir n

leweroorplanting die enigste kuur vir di

    siekte, vertel haar ma.

n Oorplanting is toe tydens n prosedure

van agt uur lank op 13 Desemeber 2013 ge-

doen met haar pa, Charl, as die skenker.

Maar Cheara se liggaampie het di lewer

verwerp.

an-Mari.Teen Oktober laas jaar was Cheara

stuur.Haar man se neef se vrou het aange-

bied om te toets as skenker. Onswasbaie bly,

    voortgaan. Ons was verby moedeloos.

bed te lande gekom by Wits se Donald Gor-

don-mediese sentrum die enigste in die

    land wat lewende skenker-leweroorplan-

tings doen.

    verwante, lewende skenker-leweroorplan-

ting gekry het. Vandag lag en speel sy.

Juan-Mari s dis die rede hoekom hul so-

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Dont forget

    the why of

    Movember

Its that time of year when men pack

away their razors and start growing

    facial hair, that is.

And while grooming your moustache to

be the best it can be is the aim for the

this month, its vital to remember the

    reason behind the movement.

The simple truth is that its not a

competition to see who has the biggest

beard. The point of Movember, now an

    international annual movement, is to

create awareness of mens health during

    the month of November.

Its initial aim was to get men talking

about prostate cancer, but the movement

has now grown to encompass testicular

    cancer, mental health and physical

    inactivity.

This year men are being encouraged to

get moving for the entire month to tackle

the latter. So, round up your friends and

enjoy a friendly game of sport.

One in every 23 South African men will

develop prostate cancer in their lifetime,

while testicular cancer remains the most

common cancer in men. Globally as

many as 510 000 men die from suicide

each year and over three million deaths

every year can be attributed to insuffi-

    cient physical activity.

Growing impressive facial hair is not

enough its time to tell your friends

why. Instead of just admiring each

others hair growth, its time to deal with

the big issues: Share your personal

experiences of stress, anxiety and depres-

sion, and encourage each other to get

    regular medical check-ups.

Ek het die saak so gestel aan

    raadslede Leonore van der Walt

    en Sam Pienaar, wat my

verwys het na Derek Bock van

die VRCID. Op sy beurt het

Bock uitgewys dat so n grasie-

    periode nie moontlik sou wees

    nie, aangesien die VRCID

    huurgeld aan die Stad Kaapstad

    moet betaal vir die parkeerter-

    reine en grasieperiodes nie vir

die sakemodel sal kan werk nie.

    Verder moet in ag geneem

word dat die VRCID die omhei-

ning uit eie sak aangebring het,

    asook personeel en lopende

    kostes betaal.

    Hoewel die Stad Kaapstad in

    samewerking met die VRCID,

dit ten doel stel om Voortrek-

    kerweg en omgewing te verbe-

ter, blyk dit nou dat die Stad

    die parkeerareas as n inkom-

stebron sien en die VRCID die

risiko dra vir die inkomste en

    uitgawes van die parkeerterrei-

ne, terwyl die Stad Kaapstad se

    huurinkomste gewaarborg is.

    Met inagneming dat winkel-

    sentrums soos Tygervallei

    gratis parkering bied, is dit

voor die hand liggend dat hulle

    die waarde van gratis parkeer-

    plek sien om verbruikers na

    hul sentrums te lok.

    Brights Hardware in Boston

het pas R2 miljoen spandeer om

    vir hul klante gratis parkering

te kan verskaf nadat die Stad

    die grond, wat voorheen n

    gratis parkeerterrein was, aan

    Brights verkoop het met die

    voorwaarde dat parkeergeld nie

    gehef mag word nie.

Ek wil vra dat die VRCID, in

    samewerking met die Stad, dit

    baie ernstig oorweeg om n

    beperkte grasietyd vir parke-

ring toe te laat in di parkeer-

    terreine. Die koste van die

    grasietydperk behoort gedra te

word deur die Stad uit die

    huurgeld wat hy ontvang vir

    die parkeerterreine. Beperkte

    gratis parkering kan beslis n

    lokmiddel wees om verbruikers

terug te trek na die Voortrek-

    kerweg-korridor. Indien nie, glo

ek dat verbruikers wel hul geld

    elders sal spandeer waar hulle

    meer welkom voel.

ji Spa and the Barnyard theatre

    hosted a breakfast onMonday 26

    October to raise awareness around

    breast cancer.

Prof Justus Apffelstaedt, head of the

breast clinic at Tygerberg Hospital and

associate professor of surgery at Stellen-

bosch University, gave a talk on What

you always wanted to know about breast

cancer and were too afraid to ask.

Around 40 women attended. All of the

funds raised went to the Tygerberg Hos-

    pital Breast Clinic transport fund.

About 50 women per month are diag-

nosed with breast cancer at the clinic

and 70% of them have a very low income

if they have one at all. Although treat-

ment costs are covered by government,

their transport costs for regular radio-

therapy sessions often become a barrier

    to entry, says Apffelstaedt.

We are always grateful for any dona-

    tionsmade to theTransport Fundand ev-

ery bit goes a long way.

    Apffelstaedt debunked commonmyths

    and misconceptions women might have

    aroundbreast cancerwith avigorous, in-

    teractive session with the guests.

As part of our ongoing commitment

to help less fortunate women diagnosed

with breast cancer, all proceeds of the

breakfast will go towards making a dif-

ference to women at Tygerberg Hospi-

tals breast clinic, and we are happy to

donate the R2 100 raised at the event,

says Karen Fox of Goji Spa.

Our hope was that this talk will make

a difference to those already suffering

from the disease, as well as for women

who can still prevent it, she said.

Apffelstaedt said out of the 40 women

attending on the day, at least five al-

ready have breast cancer or will develop

it that is howprevalent this chronic dis-

ease is, soweneed to ensure that allwom-

en are empoweredwith every piece of in-

formation that is available, he said.

    Apffelstaedt emphasised that lifestyle

can have a major impact on likeliness of

    women developing breast cancer.

The residual risk can be managed suc-

    cessfully by regular screening, mam-

    mographyandultrasound,whichwill re-

duce the risk of dying frombreast cancer

    by about 60-70%, Apffelstaedt concluded.

splinternuwe album getiteld Diep in my

    Venter.

authentic Broers, s Christo.

    My Droomvrou.

Hulle gaanmet hul vertoning by Die Boer

    Christo.

Manymay recognise her smooth voice from

the Delft Big Band, but Adelia Douw is fast

becoming one of Cape Towns top vocal acts

    in her own right.

Music is all I live for and being able to

do it as a full time job is a dreamcome true,

    says Adelia.

Adelia has been invited to perform

at venues like The Crypt jazz res-

    taurant and the Winchester man-

sions and on Saturday 21 Novem-

ber shell be joining other rising

    stars as they performwithArno

    Carstens and the Cape Philhar-

    monic Youth orchestra con-

    ducted by Brandon Phillips

    at theNederburgPicnic Pops

    concert.

    She says shes very excited

to have been given the oppor-

tunity to perform with a full

    orchestra and is practising

hard for the show. Fans can

expect to have fun, smile and

    enjoy the performance with

    us.

While she is still a part of the Delft Big

Band line-up, Adelia is often involved with

other musical projects. Last year she even

sang the lead in Evita at the Bellville civic

    theatre.

Some of her highlights include perform-

ing as part of the Our legends passing the

baton concert at Artscape in August, per-

    formingat theCapeTown international jazz

    festival, touring France and winning

    GrandWests Open Mic jazz competition

    last month.

    The experience was mind blowing.

Being part of the competitionwas already

a dream come true for Adelia, so she wasnt

expecting to win it at all.

The whole experience the amazing tal-

ent in the competition, the musicians, the

friends I made and all the love I received

from all the supporters was heart-warm-

    ing.

She adds winning the contest was a step

closer to achieving her dreams of becom-

    ing a world-class musician.

The annual Nederburg picnic pops bene-

fit concert aims to showcase young and

emerging musicians on a platform where

they get the opportunity to share the stage

    with more recognised names.

Adelia feels its important for estab-

    lished artists to empower younger

    musicians by sharing their knowl-

edge and experience with the next

generation. This is a very diffi-

cult industry and to survive in it

you need to be smart. You need

    tohave the talent andknow the

    business side of things.

    In the coming months

    shell be working on building

her brand to bring herself an-

other step closer to being an

    established musician herself

by getting her solo career off

    the ground.

    Adelia will share the Ned-

    erburg picnic pops stagewith

    award-winning soprano Goitsemang Leho-

bye and tenor Lukhanyo Moyake as well as

choristers of the Boland community choir.

They will be accompanied by the Cape Phil-

harmonic Youth orchestra under the baton

    Plaaslike sanger mag dalk Suid-

Afrika se eie Idina Menzel word.

    Soos Menzel die ikonise stem

agter Frozen se Let it go is, is Loeven-

    Kemp, Rina Nienaber, Karen Wessels,

    Pierre Breytenbach, Melt Sieberhagen,

    voorreg omdat musiekteater in my

    bloed is.

Ek wou natuurlik nog altyd n prin-

ses gewees het, so hierdie is seker naby

    genoeg?

silwerdoek. In 2013 het sy die hoofrol teen-

oor Bobby van Jaarsveld in die fliek,As Jy

Sing, gespeel. Sy s die ervaring was een

van die bestes van haar lewe.

Om elke dag op stel te kon wees en met

n gesogte rolverdeling te kon werk, was

    onvergeetlik. Die spanning was bietjie
