    A

recent Changing Lives for Good sum-

mit held at the Parow Civic Centre re-

solved that, in order to manage and

    overcome the homelessness, street people

and vagrancy crisis in the northern sub-

urbs, a whole of society approach needs

    to be adopted.

Five speakers of key organisations deliv-

ered presentations on how they tackle this

dilemma daily and on a practical basis.

According to Wilma Piek, head of the

VRCID social development programme, it is

not easy to help a homeless person because

they have complex needs. But, she said, it

is crucial for organisations to be on the

same page in order to make a difference.

The main aim, she said, is to get the street

person to a spacewhere he can act responsi-

bly to the opportunities offered and added

that in the Bellville and Parow areas, there

are currently up to 700 destitute people.

    We need shelter, reunifications with

families, ID books, more rehabilitation ser-

    vices and employment opportunities with

    skills development, she said.

Weneed to acknowledge that themost ef-

fective solutions will often be designed and

delivered at a local level by being proact-

ive, said Clive Justus, chairperson of sub-

council 4, who hosted the summit.

He referred to organisations such as

Meals onWheels that have made more than

    1,3millionwarm, balancedmeals since 1969

with the help of volunteers and donors.

Cornelia Finch, who leads the Citys Give

Responsibly campaign, said in her presen-

tation by now it is common knowledge that

    handingoutmoney to thehomeless sustains

    the poverty cycle.

Many people feel that it is their Chris-

tian duty to help in this way, but there are

    other ways of giving.

She said there were many organisations

where financial support can help the home-

less to be rehabilitated and reintegrated.

    These include:

. The Bellville Haven night shelter in

    South Street.

Instead of giving someone money, you

can buy him or her a Haven passport for

R50. With this passport they can come and

shower, get a toiletries pack, have a warm

meal and sleep in a bed. We also offer a so-

cial and a rehabilitation service, says Ge-

    orge Narkedien of the shelter.

He says this is a basic service, but they

havemany positive outcomes. Still they are

very poorly supported by the community

    and bed space is limited.

    We canuse anything fromcleaning prod-

ucts to old clothes and what we do not use,

we recycle or give to other organisations,

    he says.

Contact The Haven on 021 945 1413 or

    [email protected].

    .Metro Evangelical Services (MES) have

offices in Davies Street, Bellville and in

Voortrekker Road, Parow. They cook close

to 1 000 meals per week, of which most is

bought with a meal voucher. They mainly

offer job rehabilitation through their Grow

projects. Grow is a participation process

where one can work as a general worker in

a team and can move on to become a fore-

man or supervisor. There is opportunity to

better yourself and to earn money.

You canmove to the next level if you had

sessions with the social workers and made

certain goals. In the last six months we had

    2 210 shifts, 1 620 opportunities to get cash

in hand, 93 street people benefitted and 59

new people entered the programme, Ilse

Els from MES said at the summit.

Els says MES needs cleaning and mainte-

nance contracts for their Grow workers.

    Contact MES on 021 949 8736 or 021 948

    9888.

    .Elimnight shelter in 3rdAvenue, Elsies

River Industrial, has evolved into an assess-

ment and skills development centre assist-

ing with access to rehabilitation pro-

grammes, job placements and the integra-

tion of the individual back into society.

Liza Ortell, house mother of Elim, says

what they primarily need is for people to de-

    liver on their promises.

Many people say they want to help, but

then we never see them again. We always

need food. We have a wonderful gardener,

but we need seeds. We need wood such as

pallets for our furniture workshop, she

    says.Ortell says any second-handdonations

are sold in their thrift shop that help finance

the shelter, where 70 people can stay.

Contact Elim on 021 591 2824 or elimnight-

    [email protected].

. The Tygerberg Association for Street

People (Tasp) in Charl Malan Street, Bell-

ville, aims interventions at retaining the

family unit by encouraging the breaking of

bad habits and providing support for those

in crisis always working toward an exit

    strategy where independence and self-

    worth is achieved.

    Contact them on 021 948 5399 or tasp@iaf-

    I

t is time we as community take care

of the police, says pastor Louise

Honeyman, a volunteer at the Bell-

    ville police trauma room.

Honeyman, an intern at Vredelust NG

Kerk, studies social services and human

    sciences, specialising in criminology and

    sociology.

All of this has created a painful aware-

ness of what kind of stress members of the

    police work under, she says.

Myresearch shows that there is only one

psychologist available for every 100 police

    officers.Where other service providers like

law enforcement have a functioning emo-

tional wellness programme, I think the po-

lice are being neglected, she says.

With the support of the Synod of the NG

Kerk, she initiated a training and develop-

ment workshop to look at trauma and the

well-being of individuals in the safety and

    security sector.

    In collaboration with psychologists and

care workers from across the globe the first

of these workshops were held at the Vrede-

    lust Auditorium on 12 October.

Doctors Robert and Terri Watson, post

    traumatic stress syndrome counsellors and

psychologists from Illinois led the work-

shop while Richard Petersen, a retired sen-

ior sergeant who runs an emotional well-

ness programme also in Illinois, took part

in the proceedings on a Skype connection

that was projected in the auditorium.

The programme consisted of talks about

understanding trauma, how policing in the

United States correlates with policing here

and how to take soul care of yourself.

    Almost 70 attendees, which included

members of law enforcement and themetro

police from as far as stations inWellington,

turned up at the first workshop, and al-

though 150 were expected, Honeyman feels

    it was a roaring success.

This was just the start. Once I have es-

tablished a care network, the Vredelust

church and the synod will be supporting it.

We now just need the buy-in from the de-

partment of safety and security and the po-

    lice, she says.

Attendees all had to take part in a survey

about how they experience and deal with

stress and trauma. What is alarming about

the results of this survey, Honeyman says,

is the general consensus that there is not

    enough debriefing opportunity for officers

on the ground and that a us versus them

    mentality exists with their management.

The majority also do not feel respected and

    supported by their community.

I would like to meet Dan Plato and JP

Smith and talk about the results of this sur-

vey.Weneed buy-in from them toutilise the

    network of psychologists, councillors and

social workers that is already available.

We also want to build a network of peo-

ple who can help on a pro-bono basis with

one on one therapy. What I need right now

is suggestions. I need to growanetwork and

then I can make informed decisions. This

was just the start, Honeyman says.

Immediately after the workshop she cre-

ated a Facebook group Police Care and

Support Network which is steadily grow-

    ing.

I am already receiving messages from

people who would like to become involved.

    (Major General Thembisile) Patekile has

not responded to numerous emails I sent,

she says, but adds that she will not be dis-

quilted Christmas tree, the Big 5 and

    other uniquely South African festive

    decor, landed Tyger Valley Shopping

Centre an award at this years Footprint

    Awards.

Christmas inAfrica, as seen at the cen-

tre last year, was the brainchild of Udumo

    Designs, a non-profit partnership between

    the local community, a neighbouring

church and a few passionate individuals,

with the aim of creating sustainable fu-

    tures through crafts and design.

The process saw the selection of a group

of individuals from Wallacedene in Kraai-

fontein put through a locally designed en-

trepreneurship course to produce a range

of Christmas decorations that would re-

flect a proudly South African Christmas.

By joining hands unskilled and unem-

ployed women were empowered with craft

    skills, explains Udumo founder San-Ma-

    rie Vogel.

This year Vogel and her team are doing

it again, and visitors to the centre can look

forward to another South African Christ-

mas, butwith an entirely different look and

feel. The designs will be more simplistic

and radiate a Festival of Light theme.

o licence disc renewal noticeswere is-

sued in September and October and

    manymotorists nowhave to pay fines

for late renewals because they were not no-

tified. This is because of the National De-

partment of Transports (DOT) transfer of

    the ElectronicNational Traffic Information

System (eNaTIS) to the Road Traffic Man-

    agement Centre.

    TheCitysMaycomember for finance, Ian

Neilson, has now called on DOT and the

Road Traffic Management Centre to sort

this problem out before November, which,

he says, is traditionally the busiest month

of the year for vehicle disc renewals.

Motorists are normally issued with re-

newal notices three to fourweeks before the

expiry date on the current licence disc. Li-

cence discs that expire on 31 October will

    be renewable until 21 November.

    Nielsenurgesmotorists to act proactively

to ensure that the necessary arrangements

aremade and to renew discs online at http:/

    /goo.gl/Kql0tT.

Under the Motor Vehicle Licensing tab,

click on register (for newapplicants) or lo-

gin (for those already registered for e-Ser-

vices). You will be prompted to complete an

online registration form and will be re-

    quired to upload thenecessary documents.

    The applicationprocess takes threework-

ing days for new applicants and two work-

ing days for applicants who are already reg-

    istered

He says the Citys call centre can be

phoned on 0860 103 089 to find out the

    amount owing.

    Alternatively, motorists can visit their

    nearest vehicle licensing office.

    Take your identity document, complete

a green Application for Licencing of Motor

Vehicle form (ALV form), and renew your

licence at the counter, Neilsen says.

    Act now or pay fines

BZN here to sing all their hits:

Legendary Dutch band BZN, with lead singers

Jan Keizer and Anny Schilder, will be singing

all the hits that made BZN a household

name in South Africa in the eighties at the

LiquiFruit Amphitheatre in Paarl on 31

October. The songlist includes BZN classics

such as Yeppa, Tonight, Wheels on Fire,

Le Legionnaire, Waltzing Maria and of

course Mon Amour, the song that started it

all. BZN have over 50 hits on the Dutch

charts to date, and they are the only music

act to have had top 40 hit singles for 26

    consecutive years (19731998). They recorded

more than thirty albums, and received

countless awards and accolades. Tickets for

BZN The Greatest Hits Show are available

from Computicket. WIN! WIN! WIN! Five

readers can win double tickets to the show.

SMS BZN to 45527 before 12:00 on Monday

26 October to enter. Winners will be contact

Dit was net vir my die logiese ding om

drama te doen toe ek in die horskool kom.

Oor die beurs wat sy gewen het, was sy

na hulle gehardloop, en my ma was nog in

a few of the tasks teamshad to com-

plete in a recent charity race.

    Dubbed the Amazing GRace and

similar in format to the actual tele-

vision show, the objectives of this

race were quite different to en-

    gage with communities and non-

    profit organisations, while doing

    some good and having fun.

Hosted for the third time this

year by local NPO HewLin Com-

    passion, in collaboration with the

    WesternCape Street Childrens Fo-

    rum (WCSCF), of which HewLin

Compassion is a member, the race

    kicked off at Willowbridge Centre

    last Saturday.

    Thirteen teams

The WCSF is a vibrant, high-im-

    pact network that represents pro-

    fessional street children organisa-

    tions in the Western Cape.

Each of the 13 teams of four

members each, made up of mem-

bers of the community, had to visit

    different pit-stops around the

    northern suburbs of Cape Town

where they had to either render a

    service or complete a challenge,

says Hewitt de Jager, co-founder of

    HewLin Compassion.

    After the opening ceremony,

teams had to overcome their first

    obstacle at the Olympians Acade-

my in Bellville, where Wendy Bos-

se aims to introduce and promote

    Olympic sport to the historically

    disadvantaged youth in the West-

ern Cape as a counter measure to

    gangsterism, substance abuse and

    involvement in crime.

Four of their youth formed part

of the opening obstacle, where con-

testants had to run a gauntlet of

    wrestlers, says De Jager.

From here teams raced to Virgin

    ActiveCapeGatewhereRalphPiet-

    ers and Mornay Richardson facili-

    tated the second obstacle.

Contestants had to row on ma-

chines, score goals and skip ropes

in order to advance, says De Ja-

    ger.

    This obstacle was designed to

    promote the TLC Network, by

    which Lorna Rutter empowers and

    trains children in impoverished

    communities.

    In Bloekombos we visited the

    Siviwe Crche, where different

tasks were divided among the 13

    teams. These included washing

    andcleaningblankets, floors,walls

    and windows, he says.

    At Shonaquip, an organisation

    committed to improving the quali-

ty of life of children living with se-

    vere disabilities by designing,

    manufacturing and supplying mo-

    bility and postural support equip-

    ment, contestants had to assemble

    stimulation kits for this organisa-

    tion.

    Cleaning the streets

From here the teams visited Ons

Plek, a shelter for girls in Cape

Town, where they handed out fly-

ers to the public and then joined

the VRCIDwhere they had to clean

    the streets.

The VRCID aims to create and

maintain a clean and safe urban

    environment along the Voortrek-

ker Road Corridor, says De Jager.

    Drivers of each team received

waste bags and gloves, and had to

    clean allocated areas in Bellville

    while their teams raced toward

    themusing public transport (taxis)

    from Woodstock to Bellville.

    Promoting the activities of

MES, teams had to sell MES meal

    booklets anywhere in the northern

suburbs and return with the mon-

    ey, says De Jager.

    MES is a non-profit organisation

that has served the homeless and

    destitute community of inner cit-

    ies in South Africa 1986.

The race culminated at the Col-

lective Arts Theatre (CAT) in Bell-

ville, where teams had to prepare

the wedding venue for a couple

about to tie theknot that afternoon,

    unbeknownst to the unsuspecting

    team members.

    Theatre for the people

    This theatre offers a platform

for up and coming artists to show-

case their work, says De Jager.

    Manager Gavin Wright, artist,

actor and also stage designer and

team director on the day, says his

goal with the theatre is to offer a

venue to local artists to practice

their acting skills. Helping to cre-

ate the wedding venue was an

    added bonus.

When I took on the CAT

    project, the most important thing

to me besides the renovations that

    had tobedone,was tobeable to cre-

ate a space within which the bud-

    ding amateur acting society ofBell-

    ville and surrounds can flourish.

Currently it is mostly very expen-

sive for them to train elsewhere,

and my hope is that the CAT will

    becomeanartistic home for them,

    he said.

    A huge success

    De Jager says this years

GRace was a huge success in

terms of reaching its core objec-

    tives. The community that took

part had the opportunity to be ex-

posed to aworld they are not famil-

    iar with. More importantly they

learned that the work done every

day by all these organisations is

part of a greater strategy, which is

    compromised when members of

the public, in sheer ignorance, but

    with good intentions, assist street

people. If you want to help, rather

get involved as a volunteer in any

    of these organisations, to strength-

    en their work.

At the last pit stop, blushing bride Michelle Linnert married her beau Heinrich Jansen.

    What is the problem with

    residents who, after their bins

    have been emptied, ignore the

    rubbish which has been left

    behind and littering the

    pavements after the homeless

    people have ravaged their

bins? Yes, I realise it is not the

residents who put it there but

    surely we should all have

    enough pride in our communi-

ty to pick it up and put it back

in our bins? The dustbin men

do not have time to clean up

as they move down the street,

yet it only takes a few minutes

for homeowners to do so. The

    results are obvious rubbish

and debris are left to blow

    about in the wind.

I wonder too, just how many

people take the time to clean

out their dirty bins? I so often

    pass many bins which are

    filthy and very unhygienic.

    direction in these avenues.

    These one-way blocks are

there for a good reason and are

    important for residents who

    live in these blocks.

We go to the trouble to travel

around the block to be law

    abiding and in consideration

    for others safety. We enter

    these blocks from the correct

    direction, only to be confronted

by a motorist speeding from the

    front, from the wrong direction.

I am amazed at the ignorance

of basic traffic rules by these

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Our driving

    behaviour

    should change

While Transport Month (October) is an

initiative by the South African govern-

ment to create awareness about the

impact of transport on the economy, its

also a good time to highlight issues

    around road safety.

According to a report by the Road

    Traffic Management Corporation, roughly

40 people die on South African roads

every day. There were around 1 368

fatalities over the 2014/2015 festive season

    alone.

The sad reality about this high number

of deaths is the fact that road accidents

    can often be avoided.

    The Automobile Association of South

Africa (AA)s top road safety tip is

always wearing a seatbelt. A close second

is: Never drink and drive. They do

point out however that pedestrians who

are above the legal alcohol limit are just

    as vulnerable as motorists.

Another cause of road deaths is fatigue.

The AA suggests safety breaks every two

hours when travelling long distances to

avoid eye strain and tiredness which

affects a drivers ability to focus.

A few simple changes in our driving

behaviour, especially as we head into the

festive season, could be the major differ-

ence between being involved in an

accident or arriving at your destination

    safely.

While its easy to say Im in a hurry

or its just around the corner, one has

to ask: Is it really worth the risk not to

take a few seconds to make sure you

    arrive safely?

eur broodbome in tuine aan te plant

    word hul voortbestaan verseker en

daarom hou die Wes-Kaapse tak van

    die Broodboomvereniging van Suid-Afrika

    jaarliks n ope dag.

Vanjaar sal dit op Saterdag 24 Oktober in

    Stellenberg plaasvind.

plant, speel dus n groot rol in bewaring.

    Die verskeidenheid spesies wat vanjaar

te koop aangebied word, is besonder in-

drukwekkend en die meeste van die in-

heemse spesies is beskikbaar. Skaars blou-

    blaarplante soosEnc.Dolemiticusword aan-

gebied en die lys van skaars spesies sluit

    verder in Cerinus, Numbimontanis, Eugene

niseerde plantverkope. Nie net lede van die

    broodboomvereniging neem deel aan die

verkoping nie. Enige tuiskweker van enige

ander plante kan en is welkomomook plan-

    te te verkoop.

Toegang tot die verkoopperseel is gratis.

Lede van die vereniging word toegelaat om

plante teen 5% van hul omset te verkoop.

Nie-lede is verplig om 10% van hul omset

    aan die vereniging te betaal.

Broodbome word streng volgens wet be-

skerm en beheer. Slegs permithouers met

die nodige dokumentasie in plek sal toege-

laat word om broodbome te verkoop.

Die ope dagword gehou by n private tuin

    in Panoramarylaan 107, Stellenberg, Dur-

banville. Daar sal ook n broodboomuitstal-

ling gehou word. Die publiek kan hier die

geleentheid kry om by die vereniging aan
