In collaboration with psychologists and care workers from across the globe, the first of these workshops was held at the Vredelust Auditorium on 12 October. Doctors Robert and Terri Watson, post traumatic stress syndrome counsellors and psychologists from Illinois, led the work- shop while Richard Petersen, a retired sen- ior sergeant who runs an emotional wellness programme also in Illinois, took part in the proceedings on a Skype connection that was projected on a screen in the auditorium. The programme consisted of talks about understanding trauma, how policing in the United States correlates with policing here and how to take “soul care” of yourself. Almost 70 attendees, which included mem- bers of law enforcement and the metro police from as far as Wellington, came to the first workshop, and although 150 were expected, Honeyman feels it was a roaring success. “This was just the start. Once I have estab- lished a care network, the Vredelust church and the synod will be supporting it. We now just need the buy-in from the department of safety and security and the police,” she says. Attendees all had to take part in a survey about how they experience and deal with stress and trauma. What is alarming about the results of this survey, Honeyman says, is the general consensus that there is not enough debriefing opportunity for officers on the ground and that a “us versus them” mentality exists with their management. The majority also do not feel respected and supported by their community. “I would like to meet Dan Plato and JP Smith now and talk about the results of this survey. We need buy-in from them to utilise the network of psychologists, councillors and social workers that is already available. “We also want to build a network of people who can help on a pro-bono basis with one on one therapy. “What I need right now is suggestions. I need to grow a network and then I can make informed decisions. This workshop was just the start,” Honeyman says. Immediately after the workshop she creat- ed a Facebook group “Police Care and Sup- port Network” which is steadily growing. “I am already receiving messages from people who would like to become involved,” she says. I

t is time we as community take care

of the police, says pastor Louise

    ville police trauma room.

Honeyman, an intern at Vredelust NG

All of this has created a painful awareness

    A

    gym workout in Brackenfell, washing

    blankets in Bloe-kombos and arrang-

ing tables for a wedding in Bellville

were only a few of the tasks teams had to

complete in a recent charity race.

    Dubbed theAmazingGRaceand similar in

format to the actual television show, the ob-

jectives of this race were quite different to

engage with communities and non-profit or-

    ganisations,while doing some good andhav-

    ing fun.

Hosted for the third time this year by local

    NPO HewLin Compassion, in collaboration

with the Western Cape Street Childrens Fo-

rum (WCSCF), of which HewLin Compas-

sion is a member, the race kicked off at Wil-

    lowbridge Centre last Saturday.

    Thirteen teams

The WCSF is a vibrant, high-impact net-

    work that represents professional street

    children organisations in theWestern Cape.

Each of the 13 teams of four members

each, made up of members of the communi-

ty, had to visit different pit-stops around the

northern suburbs of Cape Town where they

had to either render a service or complete

a challenge, says Hewitt de Jager, co-

    founder of HewLin Compassion.

After the opening ceremony, teams had to

overcome their first obstacle at the Olympi-

    ansAcademy inBellville, whereWendyBos-

se aims to introduce and promote Olympic

    sport to the historically disadvantaged

youth in the Western Cape as a counter

    measure to gangsterism, substance abuse

    and involvement in crime.

Four of their youth formed part of the

opening obstacle, where contestants had to

run a gauntlet of wrestlers, says De Jager.

From here teams raced to Virgin Active

CapeGate where Ralph Pieters and Mornay

    Richardson facilitated the second obstacle.

Contestants had to row on machines,

score goals and skip ropes in order to ad-

    vance, says De Jager.

This obstacle was designed to promote the

TLC Network, by which Lorna Rutter em-

powers and trains children in impoverished

    communities.

In Bloekombos we visited the Siviwe

Crche, where different tasks were divided

amongst the 13 teams. These included wash-

ing and cleaning blankets, floors, walls and

    windows, he says.

    At Shonaquip, an organisation committed

to improving the quality of life of children

living with severe disabilities by designing,

    manufacturing and supplying mobility and

    postural support equipment, contestants

had to assemble stimulation kits for this or-

    ganisation.

    Cleaning the streets

From here the teams visited Ons Plek, a

shelter for girls in Cape Town, where they

handed out flyers to the public and then

joined the VRCID where they had to clean

    the streets.

The VRCID aims to create and maintain

a clean and safe urban environment along

the Voortrekker Road Corridor, he says.

Team drivers received waste bags and

gloves, and had to clean allocated areas in

Bellville while their teams raced toward

them using public transport (taxis) from

    Woodstock to Bellville.

Promoting the activities of MES, teams

had to sell MES meal booklets anywhere in

the northern suburbs and return with the

    money, says De Jager.

MES is a non-profit organisation that has

served the homeless and destitute communi-

ty of inner cities in South Africa 1986.

The race culminated at the CollectiveArts

Theatre (CAT) in Bellville, where teams had

to prepare the wedding venue for a couple

about to tie the knot that afternoon, unbe-

knownst to the unsuspecting team mem-

    bers.

    Theatre for the people

This theatre offers a platform for up and

    comingartists to showcase theirwork, says

    De Jager.

Manager Gavin Wright, artist, actor and

also stage designer and team director on the

day, says his goal with the theatre is to offer

a venue to local artists to practice their act-

    ing skills.Helping to create theweddingven-

    ue was an added bonus.

When I took on the CAT project, the

most important thing tomebesides the reno-

vations that had to be done, was to be able

to create a space within which the budding

amateur acting society of Bellville and sur-

    rounds can flourish, he said.

De Jager says this years GRace was a

huge success in terms of reaching its core

objectives. The community that took part

had the opportunity to be exposed to a world

they are not familiar with. More important-

ly they learned that thework done every day

by all these organisations is part of a greater

    strategy, which is compromised whenmem-

bers of the public, in sheer ignorance, but

with good intentions, assist street people. If

you want to help, rather get involved as a

volunteer in any of these organisations, to

    strengthen their work.

At the last pit stop, blushing bride Michelle Linnert married her beau Heinrich Jansen.

The greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) is

ready to celebrate summer with the launch

of their open airmovie season Movie in the

Park at the JackMuller Park in Frans Con-

    radie Drive, Boston.

The first of four films to be screened will

Man van Bothasig wat op pad werk

toe n valhelm by sy huis wou gaan

los, het daarin geslaag om n inbre-

    ker vas te vat.

    N Morn Rauch van Wagenaarstraat

verlede week sy dogtermet symotorfiets by

Toe hy by sy straat indraai, het hy

het ek gesien die ou gaan by my huis in. Ek

was, het hy geskree hy soek net werk.

Jy gaanmosnie tot binne iemand se huis

as jy werk soek nie.

    kontak.

Die ou het nog probeer weghardloop,

maar is gevang, s Rauch. Die inbreker het

    nwaterpistool en juweliersware byhomge-

had,wat hyvermoedelik in n ander voorval

gesteel het. Ek is net dankbaar niemand

het seergekry nie.My vrouwas alleen in die

    Dunoon in hegtenis geneem.

Ons kan bevestig dat daar vermoedelik

    gesteelde goedere, asook n plastiekvuurwa-

pen by hom gevind is.

A workshop on 17 October on how to

protect DNA evidence on a crime

    scene had participants craving for

    more information.

    Wehosted theworkshop to help the

public realise how to handle a crime

scene, be it a mugging, a car accident

or where someone was harmed, says

Roger Cannon, vice chairperson of the

    community policing forum.

    SinceFebruarynew legislationhas

resulted that DNA evidence can be

used to convict someone in a schedule

8 crime. And therefore it is important

that the public helps to protect evi-

dence. It canbe a cigarette butt, a piece

of chewing gum ... DNA can be found

    on almost anything, Cannon says.

The CPF held this free workshop for

    neighbourhood watch members,

members of the public and even some

children, and according to Cannon the

two hours were not enough to answer

    all the questions.

    N

o license disc renewal noticeswere is-

sued in September and October and

    manymotorists nowhave to pay fines

for late renewals because they were not no-

tified. This is because of the National De-

partment of Transports (DOT) transfer of

    the ElectronicNational Traffic Information

System (eNaTIS) to the Road Traffic Man-

    agement Centre.

    TheCitysMaycomember for finance, Ian

Neilson, has now called on DOT and the

Road Traffic Management Centre to sort

this problem out before November, which,

he says, is traditionally the busiest month

of the year for vehicle disc renewals.

Motorists are normally issued with re-

newal notices three to fourweeks before the

expiry date on the current license disc. Li-

cense discs that expire on 31 October will

    be renewable until 21 November.

    Nielsenurgesmotorists to act proactively

to ensure that the necessary arrangements

aremade and to renew discs online at http:/

    /goo.gl/Kql0tT.

Under the Motor Vehicle Licensing tab,

click on register (for newapplicants) or lo-

gin (for those already registered for e-Ser-

vices). You will be prompted to complete an

online registration form and will be re-

    quired to upload thenecessary documents.

    The applicationprocess takes threework-

ing days for new applicants and two work-

ing days for applicants who are already reg-

    istered

He says the Citys call centre can be

phoned on 0860 103 089 to find out the

    amount owing.

    Alternatively, motorists can visit their

    nearest vehicle licensing office.

    Take your identity document, complete

a green Application for Licencing of Motor

Vehicle form (ALV form), and renew your

license at the counter, Neilsen says.

eur broodbome in tuine aan te plant

    word hul voortbestaan verseker en

daarom hou die Wes-Kaapse tak van

    die Broodboomvereniging van Suid-Afrika

    jaarliks n ope dag.

Vanjaar sal dit op Saterdag 24 Oktober in

    Stellenberg plaasvind.

    Bewaring

    Tuingeesdriftiges wat broodbome aan-

plant, speel dus n groot rol in bewaring.

    Die verskeidenheid spesies wat vanjaar

te koop aangebied word, is besonder indruk-

wekkend en die meeste van die inheemse

    spesies is beskikbaar. Skaarsbloublaarplan-

    rinus, Numbimontanis, Eugene Marais, Dye-

Broodbome word streng volgens wet be-

skerm en beheer. Slegs permithouers met

die nodige dokumentasie in plek sal toege-

laat word om broodbome te verkoop.

Die ope dag word gehou by n private tuin

    in Panoramarylaan 107, Stellenberg, Dur-

banville. Daar sal ook n broodboomuitstal-

ling gehouword.

sluit. Die verkope begin om 9:00 tot 15:00.

    What is the problem with

    residents who, after their bins

    have been emptied, ignore the

    rubbish which has been left

    behind and littering the

    pavements after the homeless

    people have ravaged their

bins? Yes, I realise it is not the

residents who put it there but

    surely we should all have

    enough pride in our communi-

ty to pick it up and put it back

in our bins? The dustbin men

do not have time to clean up

as they move down the street,

yet it only takes a few minutes

for homeowners to do so. The

    results are obvious rubbish

and debris are left to blow

    about in the wind.

I wonder too, just how many

people take the time to clean

out their dirty bins? I so often

    pass many bins which are

    filthy and very unhygienic.

    Summer is coming and so

are the flies. Lets do our bit.

    Theres a huge difference

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Our driving

    behaviour

    should change

While Transport Month (October) is an

initiative by the South African govern-

ment to create awareness about the

impact of transport on the economy, its

also a good time to highlight issues

    around road safety.

According to a report by the Road

    Traffic Management Corporation, roughly

40 people die on South African roads

every day. There were around 1 368

fatalities over the 2014/2015 festive season

    alone.

The sad reality about this high number

of deaths is the fact that road accidents

    can often be avoided.

    The Automobile Association of South

Africa (AA)s top road safety tip is

always wearing a seatbelt. A close second

is: Never drink and drive. They do

point out however that pedestrians who

are above the legal alcohol limit are just

    as vulnerable as motorists.

Another cause of road deaths is fatigue.

The AA suggests safety breaks every two

hours when travelling long distances to

avoid eye strain and tiredness which

affects a drivers ability to focus.

A few simple changes in our driving

behaviour, especially as we head into the

festive season, could be the major differ-

ence between being involved in an

accident or arriving at your destination

    safely.

While its easy to say Im in a hurry

or its just around the corner, one has

to ask: Is it really worth the risk not to

take a few seconds to make sure you

    arrive safely?

    W

hen she was just five years old, a

teacher told her she spoke too much.

Her teacher said she should rather

sing until she got tired of her

    voice. It didnt work; instead

    Karla Christenes passion for

    singing was ignited.

If Im sad, if Im excited

    what-ever Im feeling, music

just speaks to me, the Bell-

    ville singer says.

    Although she competed in

    many competitions, her pro-

    fessional career took off in

2008, when she was invited to

    perform at Club Mykonos in

    Langebaan. Since then she

    has performed on festival sta-

    ges all over the country.

    Karla, or Kaycee as she

    sometimes calls herself on

    stage, struggles to define the

    genre of her music.

Being a people pleaser, she has a diverse

repertoire on stage from her own English

and Afrikaans originals to the golden ol-

dies she adds to be able to better connect

    with her fans.

Karla released her second album, Eerste

Liefde (first love) inMarch. After hearing the

title track, aBelgian fan invitedher to launch

the album and tour in Europe.

The tour was amazing. She played at a

big South African music festival in Belgium

before heading to the Netherlands and

France and says her audiences enjoyed her

style and danced along to the music.

Everyone in Belgium welcomed us with

    open arms.

    Since returning, shes beenperformingher

normal shows, alongwith a few fund-raisers,

andwasnominated a second time in theNew-

comer of the Year category at this years Bok-

    kie awards.

She has also been commissioned to be part

    of the international Euro Cov-

    ers project. She has been

    asked to singAfrikaans trans-

lations of two of the songs

    from this years Eurovision

    Song Contest for a compila-

tion album due to be released

    in Austria in May.

    She is already performing

one of the songs Dis nou die

tyd vir my at her local per-

    formances.

I must admit its a big hon-

our to be approached to be in-

    volved in something thats

    such a big opportunity.

    Karla says having an active

    fanbase sharingher posts and

the fact that hermusic is play-

ing on quite a few internet radio stations

have helped her gain these international op-

    portunities.

She often links her name to benefit con-

certs and is the ambassador forHappyHearts

care centre, a non-profit organisation that

works with children and the elderly.

Locals can see Karla in action this week-

end when she performs at the Kraaifontein

October Fest at Zoo Park on Saturday from

    12:00.

On Friday 30 October shell be performing

at a fund-raising concert for the Justice for

    Nadia Stephanie Bond group.
