Polisie

MetTygerBurger se besoekVrydag- en Sa-

terdagaand aan di stegies, het dwelmslawe

binneminute nadat die polisie uit die gebied

vertrek het n patrollering, weer hul voete

na Mister K, of ene Kingsley se woning

gewaag.

Die woning se deure was dig toegetrek,

met staalhekke voor.

Inwoners beweer dat daar van alle soort

dwelms daar verkoopword, en dat van hulle

glo al gesien het hoe mense hulle inspuit of

selfs gaan vir n refill n teug van R10 aan

n tiklollie binne-in die woning, sodat daar

geen bewyse van enige dwelms aan hulle is

wanneer hul Mister K se plek verlaat nie.

Sodra die polisie weg is, kom hulle maar

net weer in. Kyk daai vrou sy was vroer

weggejaag, het een inwoner Vrydagaand

TygerBurger kon eerstehands sien dat di

ADT finds headline aboutWelgemoed shooting grossly unfair

They could not respond to any alarmsignals

during a shooting incident inWelgemoed as

they never received any such signals, said

Rob Dale, ADT Securitys managing direc-

tor, Western Cape.

Dales statement follows the events on Sa-

turday 21 February in which a father who

shot and killed a burglar accusedADTof on-

ly arriving at the scene hours after the inci-

dent had taken place.TygerBurger reported

on the incident last week (ADT didnt

pitch , 25 February).

Although the facts stated in the article

are accurate, we believe the headline is

grossly unfair and misleading and casts un-

necessary doubt on ADT and Welgemoed-

Safes reputation and our partnerships abi-

lity to serve the Welgemoed community

with which we have a good relationship,

Dale said.

We could not possibly have responded to

the incident because we did not receive

alarm activation signals as was correctly

reported in the article, he says.

Home invasions are traumatic events

and affect the entire community, he said.

Dale appealed to TygerBurger readers to

work with their security providers to test

their alarm systems regularly to ensure no

time is wasted in getting assistance during

an emergency.

hede daar.

Wat ek ook al by ander geleenthede ges

het, is dat Kingsley, n Nigeriese staatsbur-

ger, al n lang misdaadrekord het, maar nie

gedeporteer word nie, s Blaauw.

Iewers loop dinge wat dt aanbetref

skeef, omdat daar nie behoorlike kordine-

ring tussen die staatsdepartemente betrok-

ke soos justisie, korrektiewe dienste en

binnelandse sake is nie.

Brendan van der Merwe, raadslid, bla-

meer die polisie vir n gebrek aan optrede,

wat elke keer vir Mister K en sy trawante

deur elemente binne die polisie oor komen-

Inwoners het al die nodige inligting en

hulle is bereid om dt te deel, maar hulle

vrees vir hul veiligheid en word gedreig.

Die Bellville-polisie meen anders.

Daar is gereelde operasies in Groenval-

lei. Ons lede patrolleer die area en daar is

verdere ondersoeke wat nie aan die publiek

bekend gemaak mag word nie, het kapt.

le-polisie, ges.

Nimb s daar is uitstekende samewerking

tussen hulself en die buurtwag.

By navraag oor hoe hlle graag die pro-

bleem opgelos souwou h, het die Groenval-

lei-buurtwag gevra dat hul eie gemeenskap

meer moet doen.

As al die inwoners van Groenvallei,

Heemstede en Joubertpark betrokke raak,

sal daar verandering kom, het die buurt-

wag-voorsitter ges.

Di mense het groot monde as hulle in

hul huis sit, en verwag van ons omhul huise

op te pas. Ons is nie oppassers nie. Solank

as die miernes (Mister K se woning) hier

is, sal die miere (dwelmslawe) aanhou in-

kom.

Ons moet saamstaan, het hy ges.

Geskil tussen Pieter van Blerk en

dr. Andr Dumas aan die een kant,

en die Oude Westhof-huiseienaars-

vereniging (OWHEV) aan die ander kant,

draai op 12Maart in dieKaapse hooggeregs-

hof.

Die geskil met sy lang aanloop handel oor

die reg van Dumas, n tandarts, om vanuit

sy klein spreekkamer by Pontacstraat 6

handel te mag dryf.

Die OWHEV wil nie toelaat dat ek uit

diewoningpraktiseernie, hoewel lle rigly-

ne nagekom is, s Dumas.

Een van Dumas en Van

Blerk, die huiseienaar, se

grootste kwelpunte is die feit

dat die OWHEV glo teen sy

eie grondwet in, in die verle-

de geld vir litigasie van in-

woners sou wou verhaal.

Dt is een aantyging wat

Dumas en Van Blerk maak

teen n voormalige trustee

n prokureur n die vorige

voorsitter van die OWHEV.

Hulle beweer dat di twee

onderskeidelik geld wou

maak uit litigasie, en deur n

aansoek op te stel om die

tandartspraktyk te wettig.

Dit is my grondwetlike

reg ommyberoep te beoefen,

en in di geval, ook vanuit my woning te

praktiseer, soos deur die plaaslike regering

goedgekeur, meen Dumas.

Die Stad het hom intussen aan di geskil

onttrek, het Andrea Crous, plaaslike raads-

lid, aan TygerBurger bevestig.

Woonhuis

Van Blerk erken toe di woning in 1999

gekoop is, dit as woonhuis gesoneer was.

Dumas en sy gesin bewoon die boonste

vlak van die huis, en sy praktyk is op die

onderste vlak.

n Uittreksel uit die Bellville-skemare-

gulasies wat lees dat dokters en tandartse

toestemming het om n praktyk uit n enkel-

woonperseel te bedryf, is (deur die Stad)

aan ons oorhandig, en ons is gerusgestel dat

ons maar kan voortgaan, s Van Blerk.

Die Dumase huur reeds nege jaar lank

die woning.

Van Blerk s hy het in 2008 die eerste

skrywe ontvang dat die praktyk binne 21

dae moet sluit.

Ons het ook (die OWHEV) gevra of hulle

n aansoek sal steunomdiewoning teherso-

neer. Van Blerk beweer daar is nie op di

skrywe geantwoord nie.

Hy beweer ook dat die voormalige

OWHEV-voorsitter later n aansoek omher-

sonering aangevra het.

Ons het die volgende dag die aansoek,

soos hy versoek het, ingedien, maar hy was

nie daarmee tevrede nie, en het in sy skry-

we genoem dat die regsfirma waarvoor hy

werk, so n aansoek vir ons kan opstel teen

R10 000.

Van Blerk beweer dat die ander proku-

reur betrokke, ook n komiteelid, glo ges

het dat hy die saak sou terugtrek as Van

Blerk en Dumas sy regskostes sou betaal.

Ons het nie daarin belang gestel nie. Sou

ons inwillig, sou hulle seker die volgende

onderneming teiken.

Die saak kos hom n 12 Maart se hofver-

skyning reeds R50 000, s Van Blerk.

Is daar dalk lede op die komitee wat bo-

genoemde moontlikhede raaksien en ons

met onbekostigbare ho regskostes uit ons

eiendom wil boender?

Die geld en tyd kon eerder aangewend

word omdie krisis, wat besig

is om te vererger in Pontac-

straat, af te weer. Ons voel

magteloos en is onskuldig

deur die OWHEV se duister

motiewe in di gemors inge-

sleep, s hy.

Die OWHEV was baie dui-

delik daaroor dat hy nie voor

die hofsaak enige kommen-

taar wou lewer nie.

Die saak het n lang aan-

loop en geskiedenis en is

tans sub judice, en daarom

kan ek ongelukkig nie kom-

metaar lewer oor die detail

nie, het Jan Wolmarans,

huidige OWHEV-voorsitter,

aan TygerBurger ges.

Wat ek wel kan noem, is

dat daar duidelike prosedures is wat gevolg

moet word vir die aansoek vir die bedryf

van sake-ondernemings in n residensile

area.

Voorts was ek vir n geruime tyd uitste-

dig, maar ek het aan dr. Dumas per e-pos

genoem dat ons kan ontmoet.

Dt is die sentiment van die Ridge-

worth-forum en sy buurtwag, wat Saterdag-

oggend daarvan werk gemaak het om di

boodskap uit te kry tydens sy Gee Verant-

woordelik-veldtog.

Verskeie lede van onder meer ander

buurtwagte, die Stad Kaapstad, die polisie

en maatskaplike dienste het die oggend

daaraan gewy ompamflette uit te deel by ne-

ge ingangspunte na die Tygervallei- en Wil-

lowbridge-winkelsentrums.

Een plakkaat wat baie verwarring ontlok

het, was die een vanHein Reyneke, komitee-

lid.

Hy parkeer karre met n glimlag en n kort

geselsie en as hy vanaand by sy blyplek in

Oakglen kom, slaan hy die boeke oop en

swot die verskille tussen die DA en die

ANC.

Die 30-jarige Tshunza Kaduya is n Kon-

golees wat reeds die afgelope 9 jaar in Suid-

Afrikawoon. Hy is ook n eerstejaarstudent

aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch.

Hyshier om nverskil dr te gaanmaak,

vertel Tshunza, in perfek geronde Afri-

kaans. Ek hou van die boeretaal, lag hy.

Ek hou kop bo water en eendag is eendag,

dan sukkel ek nie meer

met die taal nie!

Ek is nie n burger

nie, glimlag hy. Die

was juis omdat, as jy

waar mense nog ernstig

is oor opvoeding.

Hy s hy studeer in

die politieke wetenskap, want daar is nie-

mand anders as die boorlinge van my land

wat my land kan help nie. As ns nie ont-

wikkel nie, sal niks daar verander nie. Dt

begin by opvoeding.

Tshunza is ongetroud en kinderloos, en

sy ouers woon nog in die DRK.

Ek was n sekerheidswag ook. En ek

werk hard. As dit God se plan is, sal ek een-

dag trou.

Hy glimlagmaklik en gee graag drukkies.

Maar, s hy, die afgelopenege jaarwas

nie maklik nie. En daarom is hy sy weldoe-

ners ontsettend dankbaar.

Ek finansier my eie studies, maar daar

was mense wat gehoor het ek wil studeer,

watmyvirmybankrekeningnommergevra

het. Toe ek weer sien, het hulle begin om

geld in te betaal!

Een van di mense is Carla Cornelissen,

n sakevrou en gelowige, nes hy.

Tshunza is n motorwag. n Mens het

hom n paar keer per dag gesien as jy by die

Old Oak-sentrum kom. S het ek met hom

te doen gehad en geselsies aangeknoop,

vertel Carla.

Een keer per kwartaal hou ons kerk n

entrepreneursdag, dan verkoop ons panne-

koek en deel dan aan die wagte ook uit.

Tshunza is n besonderse wag en mens,

hy is baie innemend en vriendelik. S het

ons reis met hom begin.

Carla s hulle het gehoor hy wil studeer.

Dit is n groot droom vir hom.

Ons wou hom graag

n boost gee.

sy deursettingsvermo.

Hy werk na-ure en naweke by die Spar

om sy studies so ver moontlik te finansier.

Ek wil graag n beroep op ons gemeenskap

doen om hom te motiveer, aan te moedig en

waar nodig, te help met n welverdiende

rand of twee.

En dis goed,want Tshunza het groot plan-

ne.

Ek maak van myself n koel, s hy.

Dit is iets klein, maar as jy dit afvuur,

sal daardie koel oral waar dit gaan, n im-

pak maak. Enige tyd as die wreld my wil

afskiet, sal ek rs n impak maak.

Registration of interested and affected parties and

invitation to attend a workshop

The City of Cape Town is making progress with the planning of transit-oriented development (TOD) as

part of its programme for the transformation of the city into a more economically competitive and

productive city. The aim of TOD is to transform and design residential and commercial centres in such a

manner that it will maximise access through public transport as well as non-motorised transport (primarily

walking and cycling).

With this project, known as the Bellville Integrated Transport and Land Use Plan (BITLUP), the City wants to

determine the status quo within the study area, which is your area of residence and/or business. This

information will be used as a basis for the future transformation of the Bellville central area in accordance

with TOD principles.

One of the key goals is to enable the Bellville area to fulfil its role as the major secondary economic and

transportation node in the city. Some of the key issues that will drive this study include: What, where and

how public and private investment can be integrated as well as how it could be focused and expanded to

create optimal value for society in general. This needs to be informed by the existing and future demand

for commercial and residential space.

A team of specialists has been appointed by the City to develop the BITLUP. Input from you as a

stakeholder is critical for understanding the current dynamics of the area, its functionality and identifying

opportunities and constraints. A first stakeholder engagement workshop will be held on Thursday 26

March 2015 from 16:00 to 19:00 at the Bellville Civic Centre, 80 Voortrekker Road, Bellville with interested

and affected parties.

Mickey Anthony is een van die inwoners

wat TygerBurger genader het oor di wilde-

vyebome wat op n keer al sy kombuis laat

oorstroomhet as gevolg van verstopte geute.

Hy wys waar die wortels sy vibracrete-

muurtjie begin lig, enwaar dit skade aan die

pad, sypaadjie, en aan die hekkie en oprit by

n buurvrou oorkant sy huis veroorsaak het.

n Mens kan glad nie die sypaadjies ge-

bruik nie. Die wortelstelsel breek pype on-

dergronds en is n gevaar, want hulle groei

saam. Sy kan nie haar voorhekkiemeer oop-

maak nie, so dig en hoog staan die wortels.

Haar dreindeksel is gekraak en daar is n

Die bome is dekades oud en baie van die in-

woners het hul huise gekoop nadat die bome

op die sypaadjies reeds aangeplant is en re-

delik hoog gegroei het, s sy.

Bome mors ongelukkig en inwoners wat

graag hul tuine en sypaadjies netjies wil

hou, raak somsmoedeloos om gereeld skoon

te maak. Boston se boombelynde strate is

egter een van sy kenmerke.

Van der Walt s inwoners wat skade ly as

gevolg van boomwortels, kan aansoek doen

dat die wortels korter gekap word.

Die wildevyebome wat welig in Boston

groei, is ongelukkig berug vir hul wortels en

moesniedaargeplant geweeshetnie, erken

sy.

Maar die Stad se boombeleid is duidelik

oor di bome se toekoms.

Ongelukkig is baie bome van verkeerde

spesies beide in- en uitheems in die verle-

de aangeplant, lui dit.

Hierdie bome veroorsaak tans klagtes

van inwoners oor die afval wat die strate be-

vuil, wortelskade en skade aan eiendomme,

belemmering van uitsig, ensomeer.

Baie van hierdie klagtes word vergesel

deur versoeke omdi bome te laat verwyder.

Hoewel elke versoek ten volle ondersoek

moet word en volgens sy meriete behandel

moet word, word hierdie as die heel laaste

opsie beskou, luidens die boombeleid.

A pressing matter discussed at the recent

Ridgeworth Forumannualmeetingwas the

necessity for a camera system.

Neighbouring Stellenberg Neighbour-

hood Watch (SNW) chair Paula Smith last

Tuesday addressed the forum on the differ-

ence the Licence Plate Recognition (LPR)

camera system couldmake to Ridgeworths

safety.

The SNW spent about R160 000 on four

LPR cameras during its first roll-out phase.

That equates to about R40 000 per cam-

era, including the pole, the galvanising, the

hardware and software, including servers

and monitors, said Smith.

Outgoing forum chairman Nico Maar-

tens said only R200 from each of the 611

households in the area could raise enough

money for at least three cameras.

Other topics at the general meeting in-

cludedabriefing about the recent lowwater

pressure in the Bellville area, as well as the

rent-a-cop concept.

The Citys Peter Lourens, law enforce-

ment inspector, said a permanent law en-

forcement member was always on the side

of the rent-a-copofficer,whowasabona fide

law enforcement officer in their own right.

The only difference is that this person

is paid by the local ward councillor, out of

their ward budget, he said.

Maartens added the concept of streetmar-

shalls was being looked into in an effort to

improve cohesion and communication in

the neighbourhood.

This year marks the 50th birthday of

The Settlers High in Bellville and as

part of the celebrations, the school is

again writing its history into the pages

of a coffee table book.

Paul Haupt, author of the previous

book celebrating the schools 40th year,

says he is compiling information for

the new publication, but needs some

help.

This book will be a celebration of 50

years, while the previous one summa-

rised the history of the school. We need

the media to help us get in touch with

former learners, he says.

The reason being is that the school

wishes to include anecdotes and

achievements of their past learners.

This book will be more anecdotal.

Wed like to show peoples human side

to include people coming forward to

showwhat theyve achieved since leav-

ing the school.

Haupt says he has received some

feedback from alumni on the schools

Facebook page.

Wehave had alumni excel in all four

pillars of the school. These are academi-

cally, pastorally, culturally and in

sport, in each decade of the schools ex-

istence, Haupt said.

Of the many stories to be told, Haupt

mentions that of Chris Viney, now a

professor at the University of Califor-

nia, who came to SouthAfrica to study

hippo sweat!

Haupt qualifies: Hippos dont sweat

in the sun. Viney studied the Sun Pro-

tection Factor in their sweat.

He was a brilliant learner. It is told

that when his science teachers left the

class for a while, Viney would carry on

teaching the class in their stead!

Other well-known alumni of the

school whomHaupt hopes to include in

the book, are Wendy Horn, who was

awarded the countrys top science

teacher award, as well Carl Tertiens, or

Karl Ahari, as he is known in a popu-

lar television advertisement.

The book will be published by Creda

and only basic costs will be covered.

The book is not to generate income. It

is a celebration, Haupt concluded.

The crime rate in Welgemoed has reached

its lowest levels since 2010.

The crime rate in Welgemoed was redu-

ced in 2014 for the first time since 2010, and

the figures for January and February 2015

indicate that the reduction in crime is an

ongoing trend so far this year, said Anita

Vos, vicechair of WelgemoedSafe.

For the first two months of 2015 there

was a reduction in overall incidents and

specifically a reduction in housebreaking

and theft, compared to the same period in

2014, she said.

Anita explained how their LPR camera

system helped secure the recent arrests of

two remote car jammers.

Two car jammers involved in incidents

at the Welgemoed Forum shopping centre

this year have been arrested due to footage

from our system provided to the police and

other areas (on the LPR network), she

said. TheWelgemoedSafe/ADTarmed res-

ponse officers were also involved in an ar-

rest on Saturday 21 February when a vehi-

cle involved in the theft of a trailer during

the previous week entered Welgemoed

again and were detected by the camera sy-

stem. Anita said the vehicle and its occu-

pants were apprehended and handed over

to the police.

meeting with us last week. As

discussed, here is our response

to last weeks article ADT

didnt pitch.

ADT did not receive an

alarm signal from the property

mentioned, but the Welge-

moedsafe Control Room was

informed at 18:10 on Saturday

21 February of the shooting

incident, via a visit by a SAPS

officer. Within minutes one of

our (WelgemoedSafe/ADT)

patrol cars and an armed

response officer were dispat-

ched to the scene. At this stage,

the scene was cordoned off and

we could not access the proper-

ty this is standard SAPS

procedure for a crime scene.

The WelgemoedSafe Control

room also informed our

security manager of the

incident and within half an

hour our chairman visited the

scene, and spoke to SAPS

officers. Our patrol officers

were all placed on alert for

possible suspects in the neigh-

bourhood. The timing mentio-

ned is based on our control

room logs. We are assisting

SAPS with their investigation

by providing LPR and camera

footage, as is normal practice.

A tragic event such as this

one evokes a lot of emotion

within a community. Com-

ments on the WelgemoedSafe

Facebook group about the

event and the 25 February

TygerBurger article, includes

the following: It is our own

duty to regularly check that

the link radio and/or telepho-

ne is sending signals.

Having said that, sadly I

can not find any compassion

for the deceased. Very sorry

that the other perpetrator got

away.

criminal. He understands that

emotions have been quite high

in the suburb since the inci-

dent and the Facebook page

reflects a community that is

tired of crime in South Africa

in general. There were, howe-

ver, individuals posting on

Facebook who expressed

support for the family but

reminded the community that

the death of a human being is

not something to be celebra-

ted.

if you can just check your

alarm from time to time. It will

for the family. Wish them

strength in the next few

months in recovering from

this. I can only pray for them

in this difficult time after such

a traumatic experience. Yes, an

armed burglar may have died

and it may have been justified.

But lets not be so shortsighted

as to rejoice in a life lost.

Funders need

to base action

on new reality

Major funders of grassroots programmes

should question whether theyre basing

decisions of aid on pre-1994 perceptions.

The noble NSFAS government student

loan and bursary scheme has been

hamstrung by corruption and while

private donors continue to fill the gap,

most of the funding goes to the same

schools. It looks good on the corporate

CSI budget, but how do we know if

tangible needs are being met?

How long do post-apartheid generations

have to live in the shadow of labels such

as disadvantaged or previously

disadvantaged? Not every white child is

rich. Not every black child is poor. These

are inconvenient truths.

It would behove donors to launch

investigations into genuine need and

come face to face with ground level

reality. But that would require bravery,

commitment and courage and getting

out of multi-level plush offices.

It might surprise corporate decision-

makers to find the leafy suburbs have

people who are battling to make ends

meet in this depressed economy. And

many who plead poverty while living in

townships have far more disposable

income than is declared.

It is time to reassess our perceptions.

This would be a step towards real

equality in this new South Africa.

Without authentic action our country

will not move into a position of equal

distribution of wealth. We will not build

a non-racial nation with a true middle-

class to oil the wheels of the economy.

Walsh en haar man gehad het.

Die beeld, waarvan sy ongelukkig nie n

enkele foto het nie, is verlede Woensdag-

nag in Palomastraat in Joubertpark in

Bellville gesteel. Die apie en haar klein-

tjie in haar arms het vir sewe jaar net so

gesit, vertel die bedroefde Irma.

T

he drowning of a beautiful, vibrant

two-year-old girl on 20 December last

year, changed her mothers life fore-

ver.

Not only did Claire Campbell, who lived

in Boston at the time of the accident, but

now lives in Kuils River, put her studies

on hold, but last Saturday night saw the

launch of her charity project Starfish for

Sofia in memory of her daughter, Sofia, to

raise funds to send young children to

swimming classes.

Since Sofia drowned in a koi pond on a

farm near Tulbagh, 31-year-old Claire has

accomplished a great deal.

Search for meaning

I began to think about founding a chari-

ty in memory of Sofia during the week af-

ter her death. In my shocked and emotio-

nal state, I wanted to findmeaning inwhat

was happening to me and I did not want

people to simply forget about her after the

dust had settled.

After chatting to a friend, I decided to

start a charity to send young children to

swimming classes.

In the lunch break, I started the Star-

fish for Sofia Facebook page on my phone.

By the end of the day, I had about 500 likes!

The idea rapidly evolved and people be-

gan to contact me: an accountant from a

public benefit organisation accounting

firm; a lawyer who offered to do all my le-

gal and contractworkprobono;marketing

people; graphic designers; printing com-

panies; a fantastic website architect... the

emails began flooding in.

Today we are a non-profit company

waiting for our registration number with

swimming schools in

five of the nine provin-

ces on board as affilia-

ted partners, a Face-

book following of over

7 800 people and an of-

fice in Durbanville

with myself and two

others sending emails

and making calls to

raise fundsandpromo-

te our organisation all

day, she said.

Her charity was offi-

cially launched at

Bloemendal Restau-

rant.

Sofia drowned on the first day she and

her dad Nacho, Claires enstranged hus-

band, arrived on the farm. They went for

an afternoon nap, but Sofia woke up and

slipped out of the bedroom. She fell into a

large koi pond in the courtyard and drow-

ned.

I was cleaning the kitchen that after-

noon when Nacho called me late that Sa-

turday afternoon. He was absolutely hys-

terical and I didnt understandhimat first.

Then I realised that he was saying Sofias

dead! Sofias dead! over and over again. I

remember falling to the floor in shock and

disbelief. It felt as if somebody had ripped

out my heart, she said.

Day to day is difficult for me. There are

good days and bad days. I struggle to get

out of bed in themornings, but I know that

I have to, because Sofia was so vibrant and

alive that she would not have wanted her

mommy to be sad and lie in bed and cry

all day. Her memorymotivates me to keep

going and to be strong so that I can do good

in her name.

The whole experience of losing a child

is awful and hard. There is nothing easy

about it. There were obviously moments

that were more awful than others,

Challenges

Each day brings new challenges. The

absolute horror that I have to live with

every day is that she was all alone when

she died, probably scared out of her mind

and wanting her mommy to come and res-

cue her. Those must have been her last

thoughts.And Iwasnt there for her. I have

to deal with that each day, Claire said.

She has decided to take a sabbatical

from her final year speech, language and

hearing therapy studies at Stellenbosch

University.

I believe that Starfish for Sofia has be-

come my lifes inspiration and cause for

the immediate future I would like to help

asmany children as I possibly can to learn

how to survive when they fall into the wa-

ter, she said.

Just over 3300 years ago, the first five books

of the Bible known as the Torah written

byMoses,was handed to a nationwandering

through the desert. They safeguarded this

wisdom and it spread to the world. It would

eventually be studied by millions of people.

With so many people around the world se-

riously turning to the Torah, Rabbi Bryan

Opert has put together a course on under-

standing the Torah and its relevance today.

The programme is being run through

March on four consecutive Sundays from

10:00 to 12:30 at the Paarl Synagogue in Syna-

gogue Street, starting Sunday 8 March with

The why, what and how of the Torah.

The second and third sessions scheduled

for 15 and 22 March respectively, deal with

the role and relevance of the Oral Torah, ad-

dressing questions that have vexed biblical

scholars for many years, such as:

. Are there proofs coded into the Torah

that in fact an Oral Tradition exists?

. What is the role and relevance of the

Oral Torah?

.How can it still be authentic millenia la-

ter?

The two sessions are aptly named The

Oral Torah andChineseWhispers Part 1 and

Part 2.

The final session on Sunday 29 March, en-

titled Timely Questions and Timeless An-

swers, will examine how the Torah speaks

to our generation and what relevance it has

for us in the 21st Century.

SPCA Purina Woefie Wandel.

This popular dog walk will take place on

Sunday 15 March and will again traverse

the beautiful vineyards of DAria Wine Es-

tate in Durbanville.

Join hundreds of dog lovers and their

four-legged friends for a mornings exerci-

se with some great entertainment for the

whole family, all in aid of the Cape of Good

Hope (CoGH) SPCA.

Carl Weber and Dalin Oliver will look af-

ter the crowd as MCs, and perhaps have

them guffawing with laughter at the star-

ting line.

Julian Wenn, 2013 SAs Got Talent semi-

finalist, will also providewalkerswith a lit-

tle wentertainment before the walk.

There will be lots of competitions for

both two and four-legged participants

from wine tasting to dog food tasting, to a

treasure hunt for the young ones and the

ever popular dog agility showcase.

Anyone who donates a Purina food pro-

duct to the CoGH SPCA on the day will

stand a chance of winning one of 20 Purina

hampers worth R500 each.

Being an off-road country walk, the

SPCA urges all entrants to wear proper

walking shoes suitable for dirt roads.

We alsowant to caution owners of short-

nosed breeds like bulldogs and pugs, and

those with older dogs with joint problems,

to consult their veterinarian before com-

mitting to the walk, said CoGH SPCA

events coordinator, Juan August.

Puppies under four months old are not

permitted to take part. Owners of large

breed dogs 18 months or younger, should

also consider walking a shorter distance

which will be indicated along the route,

she said.

Water and cool-off points for both dogs

and owners will be available along the rou-

tes and SPCA inspectors and animal welfa-

re assistants will be on hand to ensure hu-

man and canine wellbeing.
