Where other service providers like law enforcement have a functioning emo- tional wellness programme, I think the po- lice are being neglected,” she says. With the support of the Synod of the NG Kerk, she initiated a training and develop- ment workshop to look at trauma and the well-being of individuals in the safety and security sector. In collaboration with psy- chologists and care workers from across the globe the first of these workshops were held at the Vredelust Auditorium on 12 October. Doctors Robert and Terri Watson, post traumatic stress syndrome counsellors and psychologists from Illinois led the workshop while Richard Petersen, a retired senior ser- geant who runs an emotional wellness pro- gramme also in Illinois, took part in the pro- ceedings on a Skype connection that was projected on a screen in the auditorium. The programme consisted of talks about understanding trauma, how policing in the United States correlates with policing here and how to take “soul care” of yourself. Almost 70 attendees, which included mem- bers of law enforcement and the metro police from as far as stations in Wellington, turned up at the first workshop, and although 150 were expected, Honeyman feels it was a roar- ing success. “This was just the start. Once I have estab- lished a care network, the Vredelust church and the synod will be supporting it. We now just need the buy-in from the department of safety and security and the police,” she says.

Valencia is 16 jaar gelede in Junie 1999 inEucalyptusstraat, Eersterivier vermoor.

Elmario is op Vrydag 11 September by syhuis in Kleinvlei in hegtenis geneem.

Attendees all had to take part in a sur-vey about how they experience anddeal with stress and trauma. What isalarming about the results of this sur-vey, Honeyman says, is the generalconsensus that there is not enoughdebriefing opportunity for officers onthe ground and that a “us versusthem” mentality exists with theirmanagement. The majority also donot feel respected and supported bytheir community.

“I would like to meet Dan Plato andJP Smith now and talk about the re-sults of this survey. We need buy-infrom them to utilise the network ofpsychologists, councillors and socialworkers that is already available.

“We also want to build a networkof people who can help on a pro-bonobasis with one on one therapy.

“What I need right now is sugges-tions. I need to grow a network andthen I can make informed decisions. This workshop was just the start,”Heneyman says.

Immediately after the workshopshe created a Facebook group “PoliceCare and Support Network” which issteadily growing. “I am already re-ceiving messages from people whowould like to become involved,” shesays.

“(Major General Thembisile) Pat-ekile has not responded to numerousemails I sent,” she says, but adds thatshe will not be discouraged by this.

“I bite into something like a pitbull. I do not let go.”

Attendees of the first workshopwere sent home with an “assess your-self” worksheet, a questionnaire thatrates the level that individuals lookafter themselves on a physical, emo-tional, mental, spiritual and relation-al way. Honeyman says hopefullythis will help to break the perceptionthat it is not OK to talk about trauma.V Contact Louise Honeyman at lou[email protected] or visit the Police Care and Support Network Facebookpage for information to join them.

ter Days Initiative helps to addressthis issue by serving breakfast to25 000 pupils across the countryeach school day.The event at the Delft school had

two different activities. The first sessionwas a nutrition-

al talk by a registered dietitian, where she spoke about the impor-tance of nutrition and how goodnutrition helps with the pupils’growthandbetter concentration inclass. The second session was a foodie

workshop for the pupils, wherethey prepared fun recipes usingKellogg’s products with two localchefs.World Food Day fell on Friday 16

October further highlighting theimportance of nutritious food fordevelopment.

@gvdcapejazz

Janine van Rooy, better known as BlaqPearl, a talented singer, poet and cultur-al activist, is reaching out to the world

as a writer with the publication of her firstbook. She has worked with some of the best in

the business and describes her style as ablend of African soul, jazz, hip-hop andR&B.Now she is a published author and like

most of her projects she didnotwait for pub-lishers to come knocking on her door – shetackled it all on her own.“My love for writing started in primary

school. I simply loved reading and writingand discovered that it counted inmy favourwhen I was top of my class almost everyyear,” she says.“I guess my active imagination also

played a part. I always had stories andwords in my head even when I reached myword limit in essays and tasks.“When I was about 12, I started writing

my first piece of expression. I faced manychallenges growing up in Mitchell’s Plain,Beacon Valley, so I used my writing to helpme deal with it.“I still do, but now in my 30s, I still have

to deal with various issues and challenges, just likemany other people, andmywritingis like a tool for coping and healing.”Like so many other talented artists hail-

ing from the Cape Flats, her love for musicstarted in church.“Growing up, there was always an oppor-

tunity in our church to perform – either ina play, the Sunday school choir or a talentshow or something.“I am grateful for that. It helped me to de-

velop confidence. Furthermore I often per-formed for family at gatherings and then,as you know now, I perform on various sta-ges to different people in the world.“I just love sharing my gift; my talent.

Performance gives me the platform to befree and in touch with my deeper, angelicbeing. I transcend to another realm, in a

way.“It also allows for engagement and con-

nection with the audience. I knowwe as hu-man beings havemuch in common and thatsoul connection moves beyond all our dif-ferences.”She is very excited about this, her first

publication that is a collection of her writ-ing, and explained that it was in the plan-ning stages for two years.“Somehow I always found a reason to not

‘just do it!’ It somehowseemedmore compli-cated and that put me off.“I guess now the time was just right!” she

laughs. She calls her book Karadaa!, meaning

“kyk daar” (look there) or “here’s the space, just take it”.Themain themes in herwriting are about

issues in society and also about her experi-ences in love and relationships.“This book includes my writing from my

teenage years until now, my thirties,” sheexplains.“I chose these poems, songs and stories to

share with the reader – firstly, to somehowget to know me a bit, then of course I’d liketo raise issues and solutions to things weface in this day and time that anyone canrelate to.“Knowledge enables us to have the choice

to do something. For me the word goes withthe deed, so I hope that through my writingthe reader gets to find some relation (know-ing you are not alone), a sense of release, solution to whatever problem they facenow, which I faced at some point.”Janine also pointed out that the publica-

tionof her bookhas alsobeenan inspirationfor the future.“For the future there’s still a lot more in

store – more love, more poetry, stories andmusic; more performances and active in-volvement in society.“I look forward to positive growth, so you

too can look forward to more books, morealbums, more moves!”V The book is available directly from her on blaq[email protected], or inbox her on Facebook, Janinevan Rooy (Blaq Pearl).

Two pastors from Delft are on a missionto fight hungerwhere it is neededmost.Every week for the past two years

Reverend Oscar Peter Bougardt and PastorJohnny Scheepers of Calvary HOPE minis-tries feed between 600 to 2 500 people withbread, meaty bones, stewmeat and potatoes.Based at Mandela Peace Park in The Hag-

ue they are striving to go beyond puttingfood on tables.“Poverty on theCapeFlats is a reality, and

we can’t do nothing while families starveand go to bed hungry,” said Bougardt. “Webless hundreds of people in this area everyWednesday, and our deacon visits Voor-brug.“During the school holidays we distribut-

ed more than 2 500 loaves of fresh bread topoor and needy families around the CapeFlats and we also supplied a school holidayprogramme at Mandela Peace Park withmuch-needed bread and juices so that chil-dren can have lunch daily.

Support from USA, UK“Our main objective is to add value to the

lives of poor and needy and to feed as manyhouseholds possible.”Bougardt further explained that their

church was now on the verge of stepping upoperations but needed some assistance.

“Through the grace of God our hard workhas been noticed by people as far afield asthe USA and UK, and as a result of this wehave a donor who is willing to erect a struc-

ture so thatwewill not only feedmorepeopledaily, but also have a counselling facility forpeople addicted to substances, a crèche formothers who cannot afford to put their chil-

dren in one, and a centre that will assistwomen and children in abusive relation-ships.”

Land needed firstHeadded that they can getmore donations

from various companies and partnersabroad, but they first need a piece of land toerect a structure.“The structure will serve as a church on

Sunday but it will be in operation sevendays a week to serve a community in need.We will cook food daily for poor and needyand also plant a vegetable garden to sustainourselves.”Bougardt also added that the possibilities

for their work were limitless but they need-ed the help of the municipality or other au-thorities.“Wearewilling to signa leasewith themu-

nicipality, but this structure will be in thecommunity for the community. We are ur-gently looking for land in The Hague areato serve the community.“Besides serving people of Delft we visit

areas to bless poor and needy families andwe also have a project that will see 300 poorfamilies receive grocery hampers for Christ-mas. I call on readers to please donate non-perishable foods, like canned foods, sugarand rice to help us reach more families dur-ing this festive season.”V For more information about the project or donations call Reverend Bougardt on 072 422 2344.

Sewerage solutions for the City are un-der construction.

The City of Cape Town’s water andsanitation department has commencedconstruction of the second phase of its CapeFlats 3 bulk sewer (CJ3) project.

The contractor will soon be setting uptheir site offices in the vicinity of YusufGool Boulevard in Rylands and commenc-ing with the test holes along the proposedpipe route.

This project is a critical component of theCity’s sewer network and serves a popula-tion of approximately 350 000 residents inthe Bonteheuwel, Heideveld, Manenberg,Gugulethu and Nyanga areas. This projectforms part of the City’s sanitation masterplan, which comprises infrastructure en-hancement of the sewer reticulation sys-tem, and will ultimately be completed bythe end of 2017 at a total cost of approxi-mately R280 million.

The construction of the second phase ofthe CF3, and the extra capacity this willprovide, will allow the City to periodicallydecommission other sewer infrastructurein the area for much-needed maintenanceand rehabilitationduringproblems suchasblockages.

AECOM was appointed as the consultingengineer and CSV Construction was ap-pointed as the engineering contractor forthe project. They established the most via-ble pipeline route for Phase 2 of the CF3 inconsultation with various City depart-ments, stakeholders, and the general pub-lic, taking into account current and futuredevelopments within the catchment area.

“The City is pleased that the project cannow proceed,” said the City’s mayoral com-mittee member for utility services, ErnestSonnenberg.

“It will ensure that we have sufficient ca-pacity in our sewer network to limit the im-pact of blockages. However, I would alsolike to call upon our residents to refrainfrom disposing of items into their sinks andtoilets that could block up the network.Common causes of blockages are rags andcooking fat/grease. We need residents’ co-operation to ensure that surcharges as a re-sult of blockages are minimised.”

Notices of road closures and construc-tion activities that may affect certain areaswill be communicated to the public. Prop-erty owners, pedestrians and traffic flowwill be accommodated as best as possible.

Louisa da Silva has not let a disability de-stroy her dreams of empowering hercommunity.

After suffering from a hearing impair-ment for most of her life, a cochlear implanthas restored someof herhearing and shehasbeenpart of helping others get the operation.

As a professional hairdresser she is nowon a mission to inspire others to achievetheir dreams of empowerment by opening ahair care school for youth in the Ravens-mead area.

“My life was not a bed of roses and manypeople doubtedmy ability because ofmy dis-ability,” she says. “I did not view myself inthis light. Instead, I allowed my go-getter at-titude and determined nature to push me to-wards my goals.

“I had to work hard to be where I am butI am passionate about my calling. Now Iwant to inspire the youth in my communityto do the same.”

Her project got off the ground earlier thisyear when two classrooms were made avail-able for her at Florida High School.

“The classrooms are there but still needto be fitted out with the required equip-ment,” she said. “These rooms need to beready soon in order for us to be able to sub-

mit the application for accreditation. “Ac-creditation would be the last hurdle intomaking this dream a reality, the realitywhich will create futures for our youth. Wedesire the support of the community, localbusinesses and entrepreneurs to assist inour endeavours.”

She pointed out that they hosted a fund-raising event earlier this year and now plana grand Sunday lunch for 1 November.

“We will be hosting this event in the Cra-venby civic centre andwe guarantee that ev-eryone will have an exciting afternoon oftasty treats and entertainment. Everythingis in place but we are still looking for somesponsors to comeonboardwith some specialprizes or goodie bags for the supporters.”

DaSilvaadded that thenameof the facilitywill be the Excelle Hair Academy with com-munity upliftment being the primary goal.

“In a community where the youth seemsto be aimlessly wondering into a dismal fu-ture, my desire is to give them an opportuni-ty for growth and success.

“I believe that this facility will be a mas-sive stepping stone to inspire them to reacha positive potential in life. My dream is tosee them succeed in their lives.”

KILLARNEY: LAMO, PORSCHE RACING AT ITS BEST

Viper to take a biteADRIAN PHEIFFER

With exciting sports car entries thatinclude the first appearance ofCharl Arangies in his racing V10

Lamborghini Galardo LM2 at Killarney, theCape round of the national Extreme Festivalon Saturday promises to be one of the bestever.

The result of the battle between the Lam-borghini and Craig Jarvis’s 8.4 litre V10Dodge Viper that has finally been cured ofits transmission problems is difficult to pre-dict. However, with current champion Fran-cis Carruthers (Juno SS3), Gauteng driverNicky Dicks (Porsche GT3 Cup) and JohanEngelbrecht, who was in magnificent formin his Porsche GT2R during the most recentround of the Extreme Festival at the Zwart-kops Raceway in Gauteng also on the entrylist, the Lambo and Viper may not have theadvantage of a clear track.

Then there’s the South African Produc-tion Car series that is still wide open and iscurrently being fought out between the su-per quick all-wheel-drive S4 Audis of Mich-ael Stephan (Engen Extreme) and a pair ofSasol entries that have been entrusted toformer WesBank champion Hennie Groe-newald and Gennaro Bonafede.

Others who have to be considered here in-clude Simon Moss in another Engen Ex-treme Audi S4, Graeme Nathan (GenuineParts Golf GTi) and possibly Greg Maloneyin his quick Mini Cooper S.

The Cape challenge is being provided by

a selection of BMW models in the hands ofEbrahim Levy, Junaid Slamang, AchmatAchmat and Philip Booysen.

Although teenage star Sheldon van derLinde (VW Polo) is expected to be the guy

to beat in the Engen Volkswagen Cup events,he will not find it easy against the likes ofDaniel Rowe, Shaun Le Reservee and im-pressive young lady driver Tasmin Pepper.

With the Single Seater Formula Ford

events, the closest to F1 any-one is ever likely to see at Kil-larney, the entry list offers in-teresting reading. Apart froma pair of Van Diemens in thehands of leading contendersNicholas van Weely and AllenMeyer, the balance of the fieldconsists of a variety of Mygalemodels. Drivers to watch hereinclude former champions IanSchofield and Robert Wolk.

An excellent entry has alsobeen received for the Bold Ma-rine GTi Challenge eventswhere reigning championPaul Simon will be defendinghis crown against the likes offellow class C driver EbrahimLevy. Ahead of them, the bat-tle will almost certainly befought out between class Afront runners ChristopherSwart, Bessie Bester and theaggressive young Marco Busi.

While the racing will be themain attraction, there will bea host of static events to em-phasise the festival’s familyappeal. These include a funfair with a number of carnival

rides, displays of racing cars and motorcy-cles, radio controlled model planes and highaltitude stilt walkers, while a 170-year oldPenny-Farthing bicycle will be on the circuitduring the lunch break.

Francis Carruthers closely followed by Johan Engelbrecht, are two of the local sport and GT drivers to keep aneye on on Saturday. PHOTO: DAVE COLINS

Solly Peters (6/74) en Jona-than Schwerin (32*) was Edgemead se staat-makers.
