Stander explained in the contact crimes category, more than 50% of the reported cas- es were assaults. Stander showed a graph which indicates that more than 50% of all assault cases dur- ing this time occurred as robberies in pri- vate homes. “This is very difficult to police and is one of the areas where the community can assist by partnering with police to educate people and make our communities safer,” he said. According to Stander’s presentation, 36,5% of assaults are reported in sector 2, which covers Killarney Gardens and Du- noon. Sector 5, which includes Joe Slovo, Phoe- nix and Montague Gardens, had the second highest total for assaults with 27,6%. Dunoon also recorded the highest amount of contact crimes, with 618 cases in the last financial year, followed by Joe Slovo with 300 cases and Milnerton Central with 114 cases. In the murder category, Dunoon recorded 28 murders followed by 11 in Joe Slovo. Brooklyn, Summer Greens and Milnerton Central each recorded two murders. Stander also revealed that Dunoon had the highest amount of assault and sexual offen- ces cases. In both these categories, the totals are double than those reported in Joe Slovo. After more than 18 years, thedream of the Eric MilesCheshire Home inMilnerton

are coming true.According to the home’s manag-

er, Alet Bosman, their expansionplans are gaining momentum asthey have just signed an intent topurchase for land nearby. The home cares for adult disa-

bled people whose disabilities area result of various reasons includ-ing injury, impairment from birth, illness and degenerative diseases.Currently the home cares for morethan 40 adults.Next year the home will cele-

brate its 40 year anniversary andBosman explains the aging build-ing is in need of repairs. She ex-plains due to a wide variety of ser-vices, the homeneeds to be expand-ed to cater for the needs of itsresidents. For these reasons, the home em-

barked on plans to develop a vil-lage but the first step was acquir-ing abutting land. Bosman ex-plains about nine years ago, avolunteer at the home left R1,3mfor the purchase of the land. She says at the time the land they

needed was valued at R1,3m butdue to red tape they could not pur-chase.“Now that all the paperwork has

been sorted and we can buy theland it may be more than R1,3m.

For this reason we have undertak-en various fund-raising initiativesand call on thepublic to assist,” shesays.Part of the original plans was to

create independent living units forfamilies who have a disabled per-son. Over the years, Bosman ex-plains, she has seen many familiesbroken apart when one person

moves into the home.“Thedreamis tohave theseunits

which can take an entire family. Here the parents and children canlive and while the children are atschool, the disabled parent wouldbe cared for byus. Instead of takingthe person out of the home, we cankeep families together,” she says.Bosman says they now plan to

use some of the land to developrental units which can be rented. This will be done to assist with

development costs and ensure thatthe development is feasible.Among some of the other plans isto develop a new entrance andmeeting rooms for residents.“Currently when residents are

visited by their family orministers

and would like to talk in private, they have to go to their roomswhere they sleep. This is uncom-fortable and we hope with meetingrooms, our residents can feel morecomfortable when there are visi-tors,” she says. The home carries out various

outreach programmes and Bos-man explains while in Joe Slovothey decided there was a need foran Early Childhood DevelopmentCentre (ECD) for disabled chil-dren.The ECD along with a skills de-

velopment centre for seniors havebeen included into the plans. Bos-man explains the skill centre willbe incorporated into the communi-ty hall that will be divided intothree sections.“Very soonwewill start amosaic

class for the seniors from Joe Slo-vo.Wehaveasked themto start col-lecting scrap pieces of glass for theclasses, but we need someone whoknows how to create mosaics tovoluntarily host these classes,” shesays. While plans to expand the homes

are moving along, Bosman saysthey need help with the develop-ment.She says while donations are al-

ways welcomed, they also need theassistance of professionals in con-struction, architecture and busi-ness to help make the expansionsuccessful.V If you would like more information orto assist call Bosman on 021 552 2120.

According to a representative of the neigh-bourhood watch, drugs have taken overand shebeens are operating 24/7.She explained despite several attempts

by the watch to keep an eye on the streets, they come under fire by patrons of illegalliquor outletswho pelted themwith stones.“It is dangerous in Dunoon and we are

losing hope. It’s very rare to see a police ve-hicle and we see criminals run away. Oneperson said he would stab us one by one ifwe patrol,” she said.In response, Stander said provincial po-

lice have through various initiatives, in-cluding donations to the watch, reaffirmedtheir dedication to fighting the crime surgein Dunoon. The watch explained they had recently

noticed drug dealers were selling drugs toyounger children. They sent a young boy to purchase drugs

to verify the allegations and explain theboy returned with tik.Stander admitted the drugs were handed

to police but admonished thewatch for thisincident.“What you did was illegal. You cannot

take the law into your own hands. In Du-

noon, there have been 283 drug arrests, soI do not understand when you say nothingis being done,” he said.Stander’s presentation also included an

analysis on property crimes. He explainedin this categoryMilnerton Central andMon-tague Gardens topped the list with 277 and256 cases respectively. In abreakdownof this category, he further

explained when it comes to residential bur-glaries, Summer Greens reported 92 casesfollowed by 88 cases in Milnerton Centraland 80 in Dunoon. During this time Monta-gue Gardens reported 146 business burglarycases.Stander indicated that Dunoon recorded

The safety of commuters at MyCiTi busstops from Milnerton to Melkboss-trand was highlighted at a Policing

Needs and Priorities (PNP) workshop overthe weekend.

Hosted by the department of communitysafety (Docs) the annual gathering seesvari-ous role players from a specific police clus-termeet to discuss various crime and safetyissues.

OnFridayandSaturday lastweek, ameet-ing for theMilnertonclusterwhich includesthe Milnerton, Table View and Melkboss-trand police precincts, was held in Darling.Thepurpose of theworkshopwas to devel-

op a community safety plan for the clusterthat is aligned to the policing needs and pri-orities thatwere identified. The departmentfocuses its work into three thematic areas:professional policing, partnerships for safe-ty, and safe public spaces, and this formedthe basis of discussions.Under the discussions on public spaces,

those present raised concern about robber-ies at MyCiTi bus stops and other transporthubs. Among some of the hot spots identi-fied are Gie Road in Table View, Dunoon,Paarden Eiland and Joe Slovo.

Speaking during the workshop on Satur-day, SamieKleynhans of theMelkbosstrandCommunity Police Forum explained as theroll-out of the MyCiTi bus service contin-ued, it became part of the daily lives of thoseliving along the West Coast.

He said with robbers targeting commut-ers, the City of Cape Town should be con-sulted to assist in finding a solution.

Earlier this month, Table View police is-sued a statement warning commuters to beaware of aknife-wielding robber in the area.

According to police spokesperson Lieu-tenant Adriana Chandler, the station re-ceived reports from commuters indicatingwhile waiting for the bus, the man ap-proached them and threatened commuterswith a knife and demanded they hand overtheir possessions.

“Be alert at all times. Do not be distractedby your cell phone by texting while waitingat the bus stop. Take note of any distinctcharacteristics of the suspect and report the

case immediately, should you fall victim toa robbery. The incidents reported occurredduring the day and night, so no particulartime of day is prominent,” she explained.According to the recommendations in the

report, those present suggested the forma-tion of transport subcommittees to engagewith local authorities.

The lighting of streets and public spacesin Table View and Atlantis were also high-lighted and the report recommends consul-tation with ward councillors in this regard.

Philadelphia police raised concernsabout the lack of street lights at the Wolwe-rivier Incremental Development Area(IDA). According to station commanderCaptain Frederick Rossouw, Wolwerivierwas “becoming a dumping ground”, refer-ring to the recent relocation of several Delftfamilies.

“It’s a problem because they bring peoplefrom other areas and there aren’t evenstreet lights. The area is very difficult to po-lice,” he said.

In response, provincial community safety

minister Dan Plato said he would take thematter up with Cape Town mayor PatriciaDe Lille.

On the first day of the workshop, Briga-dier Marius Stander gave a presentation onthe crime trends and threats in the cluster.

He explained the cluster consisted of di-verse communities, and covers both ruralandurbancentres and stretches over a largegeographical area.

Murder, aggravated and common rob-bery, hijacking, house robberies, burglariesat non-residential premises and assaultswere some of the main crime threats in thecluster. Stander reported that factors con-tributing to crime are domestic violence, al-cohol and drug abuse, and socio-economicissues.

“There is also a problem of gangsterism, much of which is related to the drug trade. There is a concern with the release of of-fenders on parole and correctional supervi-sion without sufficient supervision or prep-aration of the community,” the reportstates.

The Table View Community Police Fo-rum (CPF) has revealed its grand planto improve safety in the precinct.

At the helm are newly elected chairper-son David Harris and vice-chairpersonGrant Lemos. Both men have been affectedby crime and are passionate about makingtheir community safety. They serve on theTable View and Parklands neighbourhoodwatches.

Last week, the duo shared the CPF’s mul-ti-pronged plan to improve safety whichboasts exciting and original initiatives.

Known as the Community Safety Plan,Lemos explains it is aimed at creating acommunity where children feel safe to playin parks. Individuals are mobilised andplay an active role in curbing crime.

At the top of the list of initiatives is a pro-posal to increase the amount of street com-mittees.

According to Harris by mapping variouscrimes, they have ascertained that in roadswhere there are active street committees, crime tends to be lower.

“It’s important to get residents living incomplexes to see the value of street commit-tees and to actively participate,” he says.

Own vehicle neededNext on the list is a plan to assist with po-

lice resources by sourcing a communitysafety vehicle. Harris explains these vehi-cles sponsored by the community will bemanned by security officers registered withthe Private Security Industry RegulatoryAuthority (Psira). These officers will takedirection from Table View police.

“With the projected growth in the popula-tion of the greater Blouberg area and ourknowledge that the necessary resources inmanpower and equipment will not be forth-coming at any time soon, we realise that thestrain on SAPS to achieve a reduction in oreven stabilising crime will be at the leastchallenging. It is obvious that without com-munity help we will face a losing battle,” theplan states.

It is envisioned that the vehicles will bemarked as a sector vehicle and the projectwill be started in sector 2, which coversParklands and Sunningdale.

Lemos explains this proposal – like manyothers – is open for debate.

“The question we always have to ask is

whether or not it is good for the community. This is the foundation of all the CPF does,”he says.

The CPF has also analysed the impact ofillegal car guards on beachfront businesses.

Harris explains while the beachfront is adrawcard for many visitors, illegal carguards are having a negative impact. Tocounter this, the CPF is now proposing anidea first proposed by Andrew Brace.

If everybody patrols for 20 minutes . . .Harris explains that with Brace’s permis-

sion, the CPF will approach the City of CapeTown about leasing the public parking spa-ces.

“We then give a security company a man-date to patrol the area and stop illegalguards. In other precincts where this isdone they have managed to reduce vehiclerelated crimes to zero.”

With hundreds of jobseekers seen in thegreater Table View area each day, Lemosexplains while many are looking for work, residents are often reluctant to hire peopleseen on the street. He says those looking forwork soon become desperate and resort tocrime. The CPF envisions the creation of ajob centre where jobseekers could registerand workers could be sourced.

Harris says only people that are in thecountry legally, will be able to register.

While the Table View police precinct in-cludes various communities with variousdifferent issues, the CPF’s plan also in-cludes a proposal for a neighbourhoodwatch in the Site 5 informal settlement.

Located along Potsdam Road, Harris ex-plains the CPF will provide interested Site5 residents to form their own watch.

“Site 5 is part of this police precinct andthe CPF believes there needs to be a concert-ed effort to help guide them in starting theirown watch. Just like Table View residents, they are also affected by crime and want tolive peacefully,” he says.

While the plan gives a comprehensiveoverview of many of the issues affecting theTable View precinct and how to counter it,Lemos explains encouraging active partici-pation in the various initiatives is absolutekey.

“If everybody in Table View patrolled forjust 20 minutes, imagine the difference wecan make. The CPF wants to mobilise peo-ple to stand together and start building asafer community for our children,” he con-cludes.

CPF reveals itsgrand plan

Plans are underway for a victim sup-port room at Table View police sta-tion and officers are calling on resi-

dents in the precinct to assist after thestation issued a statement last week call-ing for residents to sign up as victim sup-port volunteers to assist.Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adri-

anaChandler explains over the years thestation has been assisted by the Commu-nity Intervention Centre based at Mil-nerton police station. However, it is compulsory for every

police station to have its own victimfriendly room with volunteers from thecommunity.

Volunteers liaise between the victim andthe systemVolunteers have various functions in-

cluding providing emotional support tovolunteers, assist with awareness andeducation campaigns and act as an am-bassador for victims’ rights.Volunteers are also required to liaise

between the victim and agencies in thecriminal justice system, assistwith fund-raising projects and provide support tocommunity projects.Chandler says while the station al-

ready has a room, it will be refurbishedby Business Against Crime and intro-duced to the public during the 16 Daysof Activism for no violence against wom-en and children which runs fromWednesday 25 November to Thursday 10December.She says application forms for volun-

teers are available at the Community

Service Centre (CSC) at the station andpolice will host an exhibition at TableView Mall on Saturday 31 October.

Volunteers will receive trainingThere are also various requirements

for volunteers which include: No crimi-nal record, attendance at a three daycourse, willingness to be on stand-by incase victims need help, attendance at amonthly meeting and volunteers shouldhave their own transport.Chandler explains each volunteer will

have to submit a curriculum vitae andwe interviewed by a police official.“The applications will be quality

checked, a shortlist will be compiled andapplicants will be contacted for inter-views.“Successful candidates will then re-

ceive immediate training from BusinessAgainstCrime – the training involves ev-erything that will be expected from thevolunteer, which is mainly to render asupporting role after a traumatic experi-ence, thereafter the person will be re-ferred to further assistance, which will,in most cases, be counselling.”

Ties will not be cutChandler also says police will also still

make use of the services offered by theCommunity Intervention Centre.“We will continue to make use of their

very professional service during andlong after the recruitment of ‘our own’volunteers. Ties will not be cut,” shesays. The deadline for applications is Thurs-

day 7 November.V For more information call Chandler on 021 5213308 or 071 604 8334.

The Bothasig police would like to remindfirearmowners to check their firearm licen-ces and competencies to ensure that theyare still valid.According to Warrant Officer Jacques

Naudé, the designated firearm officer atBothasig, owners need to apply 90 days be-fore the expiry date of the licence and thecompetency card. When applying for the renewal of a com-

petency certificate, it is not necessary to gofor training again. Firearm owners onlyneed to apply for renewal of it and the fire-arm licence at the local firearm office.

Firearm owners need to take note of thefact that if they have applied and receivedthe new licence, then the old green card forthat weapon will no longer be valid. Theymust also inform SAPS regarding a changeof address if they have moved from thepremises where they resided when theyoriginally applied for their licence. Thisshould be done at the SAPS office whichserves the new address.V Anyone wishing to enquire more information re-garding the application or renewal process can con-tact Naudé or Mr Mninawe Daweti during officehours on 021 559 9414 and 021 559 9425.

“It is time we as community take careof the police,” says pastor LouiseHoneyman, a volunteer at the Bell-

ville police trauma room.Honeyman, an intern at Vredelust NG

Kerk, studies social services and humansciences, specialising in criminology andsociology. All of this has created a painful aware-

ness of what kind of stress members of thepolice work under, she says.“My research shows that there is only one

psychologist available for every 100 policeofficers. Where other service providers likelaw enforcement have a functioning emo-tional wellness programme, I think the po-lice are being neglected,” she says. With the support of the Synod of the NG

Kerk, she initiated a training and develop-ment workshop to look at trauma and thewell-being of individuals in the safety andsecurity sector. In collaboration with psychologists and

care workers from across the globe the firstof these workshops were held at the Vrede-lust Auditorium on 12 October.Doctors Robert and Terri Watson, post

traumatic stress syndrome counsellors andpsychologists from Illinois led the work-shop while Richard Petersen, a retired sen-ior sergeant who runs an emotional well-ness programme also in Illinois, took partin the proceedings on a Skype connectionthatwas projected on a screen in the audito-rium.The programme consisted of talks about

understanding trauma, how policing in theUnited States correlates with policing hereand how to take “soul care” of yourself.Almost 70 attendees, which included

members of law enforcement and themetropolice from as far as stations inWellington, turned up at the first workshop, and al-though 150 were expected, Honeyman feelsit was a roaring success.“This was just the start. Once I have es-

tablished a care network, the Vredelust

church and the synod will be supporting it.We now just need the buy-in from the de-partment of safety and security and the po-lice,” she says.Attendees all had to take part in a survey

about how they experience and deal withstress and trauma. What is alarming aboutthe results of this survey, Honeyman says,is the general consensus that there is notenough debriefing opportunity for officerson the ground and that a “us versus them”mentality exists with their management. The majority also do not feel respected andsupported by their community.“I would like to meet Dan Plato and JP

Smith now and talk about the results of thissurvey. We need buy-in from them to utilisethe network of psychologists, councillorsand socialworkers that is alreadyavailable.“We also want to build a network of peo-

ple who can help on a pro-bono basis withone on one therapy.“What I need right now is suggestions. I

need to grow a network and then I canmakeinformeddecisions.Thisworkshopwas justthe start,” Heneyman says.Immediately after the workshop she cre-

ated a Facebook group “Police Care andSupport Network” which is steadily grow-ing. “I am already receiving messages frompeoplewhowould like to become involved,”she says.“(Major General Thembisile) Patekile

has not responded to numerous emails Isent,” she says, but adds that she will notbe discouraged by this.“I bite into something like a pit bull. I do

not let go.” Attendees of the first workshopwere sent home with an “assess yourself”worksheet, a questionnaire that rates thelevel that individuals look after themselveson a physical, emotional, mental, spiritualand relational way. Honeyman says hope-fully this will help to break the perceptionthat it is not OK to talk about trauma.V Contact Louise Honeyman at [email protected] or visit the Police Care and SupportNetwork Facebook page for more information andjoin them if you would like to become involved inthe care network.

Parents across Cape Town are beingurged to buckle up their kids and keepthem safe during National Transport

Month.Last week, the Car Seats for Kids cam-

paign came to Table View, where parentswho have used car seats they no longer usedonated it to be reused by parents who can-not afford one.The event was hosted by Imperial Road

Safety, Wheel Well and KFM.Speaking on the day, Wheel Well founder

Peggie Mars explains following amend-ments to theNational Road trafficActwhichwere promulgated last year, all children un-der the age of three were required to betransported in appropriate child seats whentravelling in private vehicles. In a statement released in October last

year, provincial transport minister DonaldGrant explained an analysis conducted bySafely Home, using audited fatality datafrom the forensic pathology services of theWestern Cape Department of Health, showed that themajority (53,42%) of the bod-ies of young childrenwhodied as passengersin road crashes were recovered outside orunder the vehicle.“The presence of the body outside the ve-

hicle is a near-certain indicator that thechild was not restrained or was improperlyrestrained, as ejection does not occur whenan appropriate child restraint is used. Thepresence of the body inside the vehicle, how-ever, is not an exclusionary factor in deter-mining if the child was restrained or not.

The analysis therefore erred on the side ofcaution by default,” he said.According to the statistics for road fatali-

ties of children for the period between 2011and 2013, 27 children under the age of onedied, while 36 children between the ages ofone and four lost their lives. In the first age group, 11 children were

found outside the vehicle, seven inside andthe remaining incidents are unknown. Inthe secondage group, 21 childrenwere foundoutside, 10 inside and five unknown.Mars explains while the amendments will

help ensure more children are kept safe, many parents cannot afford car seats. Forthis reason, the donated seats are cleaned, checked for safety and then donated to par-ents who need car seats.Mars explains all seats undergo strict safe-

ty checks and says in the past three yearsthe organisation has collected over 7 000seats and donated 5 200 seats.“Children are the most vulnerable on our

roads and with this initiative we can helpkeep them safe,” she says. The team visited various sites across the

northern suburbs to raise awareness aboutthe campaign and encouraging schools andparents to participate.Imperial Road Safety has partnered with

various automotive brands to give the pub-lic a number of easily accessible drop-offpoints nationwide. Through this partner-ship, consumers across the country are nowable to drop off their old car seats at any ofImperial’s Hyundai, Kia andRenault dealer-ships until the end of October.V If you would like more information, call Mars on072 385 7121.

“Empty plot scrutinised” (TB,14 October) refers.

The concerns aired aboutundesirable developments onthis plot again highlights thetunnel vision of the NationalDepartment of Public Works. In the Western Cape, I am told, they have over 5 000 propertiesto look after, but have neitherthe will nor the means to dothis effectively.

A large percentage of theseproperties are of no use tothem whatsoever, like the onebordering my residence, aleft-over piece when Ysterplaatairfield received a new perime-ter fence some 15 years ago.The fact that empty and

unused pieces of land attractillegal occupation, is prettyobvious, but the department, and other property owners forthat matter, seem to be indenial. For some 15 years my

neighbours and I have battledto have the adjoining piece ofvacant land sold for develop-ment, to no avail. The depart-ment’s blunt answer is: we doNOT sell any piece of land.We too, like the residents of

TVNW, are just waiting for theinevitable: full scale illegaloccupation.

there for a good reason and areimportant for residents wholive in these blocks. We go to the trouble to travel

around the block to be lawabiding and in considerationfor others’ safety. We enterthese blocks from the correctdirection, only to be confrontedby a motorist speeding from thefront, from the wrong direction.I am amazed at the ignorance

of basic traffic rules by thesepeople, and we are so quick topoint at the corrupt governmentand crime. But you, sir or madam, are

just as corrupt. These are thebasic laws of our country!Breaking a traffic law is nolesser crime than stealing a car. Please, law enforcement, catchthese law breakers!

Oneway streetsthere for a reason

What is the problem withresidents who, after their binshave been emptied, ignore therubbish which has been leftbehind and littering thepavements after the homelesspeople have ravaged theirbins? Yes, I realise it is not theresidents who put it there butsurely we should all haveenough pride in our communi-ty to pick it up and put it backin our bins? The dustbin mendo not have time to clean up

Keep your bin andstreet clean

as they move down the street, yet it only takes a few minutesfor home owners to do so. Theresults are obvious – rubbishand debris are left to blowabout in the wind.I wonder too, just how many

people take the time to cleanout their dirty bins? I so oftenpass many bins which are filthyand very unhygienic.Summer is coming and so are

the flies. Let’s do our bit.SHEILA DANDO

Our drivingbehaviourshould changeWhile Transport Month (October) is aninitiative by the South African govern-ment to create awareness about theimpact of transport on the economy, it’salso a good time to highlight issuesaround road safety.According to a report by the Road

Traffic Management Corporation, roughly40 people die on South African roadsevery day. There were around 1 368fatalities over the 2014/2015 festive seasonalone. The sad reality about this high number

of deaths is the fact that road accidentscan often be avoided. The Automobile Association of South

Africa (AA)’s top road safety tip isalways wearing a seatbelt. A close secondis: “Never drink and drive”. They dopoint out however that pedestrians whoare above the legal alcohol limit are justas vulnerable as motorists.Another cause of road deaths is fatigue.

The AA suggests safety breaks every twohours when travelling long distances toavoid eye strain and tiredness whichaffects a driver’s ability to focus.A few simple changes in our driving

behaviour, especially as we head into thefestive season, could be the major differ-ence between being involved in anaccident or arriving at your destinationsafely. While it’s easy to say “I’m in a hurry”

or “it’s just around the corner”, one hasto ask: Is it really worth the risk not totake a few seconds to make sure youarrive safely?

SMSV I applaud you for the cell etiquette arti-cle. It’s disconcerning when this happensin church. What are we teaching our futu-re generation?

When she was just five years old, ateacher told her she spoke toomuch. Her teacher said she should rath-

er sing until she got tired of her voice. Itdidn’t work; instead Karla Chistene’s pas-sion for singing was ignited.“If I’m sad, if I’m excited – what-ever I’m

feeling, music just speaks to me,” the Bell-ville singer says.Although she competed in many competi-

tions, her professional career took off in 2008when shewas invited to performatClubMy-konos in Langebaan. Since then she has per-formed on festival stages all over.Karla, or Kaycee as she sometimes calls

herself on stage, struggles to define the gen-re of her music. Being a people pleaser, shehas a diverse repertoire on stage – from herown English and Afrikaans originals to the“golden oldies” she adds to be able to betterconnect with her fans.Karla released her second album, Eerste

Liefde (first love) in March. After hearingthe title track, a Belgian fan invited her tolaunch the album and tour in Europe.“The tour was amazing.” She played at a

big South African music festival in Belgiumbefore heading to the Netherlands andFrance and says her audiences enjoyed herstyle and danced along to the music.Since returning, she’s been performing

her normal shows, along with a few fun-draisers, and was nominated a second timein theNewcomer of the Year category at thisyear’s Bokkie awards. She has also been commissioned to be part

of the international Euro Covers project tosing Afrikaans translations of songs from

this year’s Eurovision Song Contest for acompilation album due to be released inAustria in May. She is already performingone of the songs “Dis nou die tyd vir my” ather local performances.Karla often links her name to benefit con-

certs and is the ambassador for the HappyHearts care centre, a non-profit organisa-tion for children and the elderly.Karla will be at the Kraaifontein October

Fest at Zoo Park on Saturday from 12:00. OnFriday 30 October she’ll be performing at afundraising concert for the Justice forNadiaStephanie Bond group.V For more information about Karla or her upcomingshows, visit her website at www.karlachristene.comor visit her Facebook page: “Karla Fan Page”.

DESIRÉE RORKE@dezzierorke

“It doesn’t matter that I am deaf. This is whoI am and I am proud to show others that weare just as capable as anyotherperson,” saysJean-Claude Smit from Kraaifontein. This 17-year-old smashed boundaries

when he was elected, with a majority vote,as the first ever disabled Speaker of the Chil-dren’s Parliament. It was this courage and leadership skills

that prompted his deputy principal at the DeLa Bat School for the Deaf in Worcester tonominate him to this programme. The fifth annual Nelson Mandela Chil-

dren’s Parliament congregated in the FreeState Legislature from 5 to 7 October to tack-le a number of serious issues pertaining tothe protection of children, including forcedchildmarriages, deaths in initiation schoolsand due to illegal abortions, and violence.

Huge step for deaf peopleFor Jean-Claude, this was the ideal oppor-

tunity to correct misconceptions the publichave about deaf people.“Being deaf and having deaf parents, this

is really a huge step forward for me as wellas other deaf people, especially deaf kidswho now know anything is possible. InSouth Africa many people view deafness asan illness and something that needs to befixed. Now I can say this is not true. As adeaf person I have opportunities and canparticipate in many things. I am not afraidto show that I can do anything,” he says.He describes the Children’s Parliament as

an amazing opportunity for children tolearn what governance is all about.“During these few days we participated in

several commissions and identified manyproblems within our schools. Kids from allthe provinces were represented and it wasenlightening to see that communities allover the country are afflicted by similarproblems. Drug abuse, teenage pregnanciesand gangsterism are plaguing our youth andI would like to see the adults at parliamenttake us as children seriously,” he says. The issues discussed over the two-day ses-

sion were drawn up into a declaration andsigned and Jean-Claude is quick to add thatthis declaration should not just be seen asjust a piece of paper, but that it was drawn

up for a reason”.The Children’s Parliament is a key pro-

gramme of Social Development Month (Oc-tober), hosted by the Department of SocialDevelopment to provide a platform for chil-dren to participate in democracy – to be seenand heard, explains Lumka Oliphant, spokesperson of the department. And Jean-Claude is adamant that these

rights be obligated.“I believe that change starts with us, the

youth of South Africa. It will not help if wesit back and wait for others to do the work.

All of us should work together towards thesamegoal, nomatterwhoyouare, whereyoulive or what language you speak,” he says.

‘I might be deaf, but not dumb’He also said he wanted to focus on helping

children who face challenges at home.“Many children are exposed to bad things

in their homes, like abuse and parents whoabuse drugs and alcohol. These childrenthen bring their experiences to school lead-ing to bullying, peer pressure and gangs inschools. We need to findways to improve thehome environment.“I think it is important for deaf kids to be

able to use technology. We are normal likeany other person, but because hearing peo-ple cannot communicate with us, somethink we are deaf and dumb. We can readand write other languages and we can speakwith our hands!”

First ever deafSpeaker elected

Aristocratic music at G’WestThe self-proclaimed aristocracy of musicwill be celebrated in Cedric Vandenschrik’sKings, Queens and Divas at GrandWest’sRoxy Revue Bar from Friday 23 October. From the King of Pop to the Queen of Soul,

the show pays outrageous homage to theevergreen hits of music icons past andpresent by combining colourful costumesand caricatures of the “royals” of music.A band and three vocalists will bring the

likes of Elvis, Michael Jackson, ArethaFranklin, Freddy Mercury, Mick Jagger,Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, David Bowie, Di-ana Ross, Cher and more to life on stage.Fronting the show is Vandenschrik who

donna and Celine Dion, while Monique Hel-lenberg steps into the royal shoes of ArethaFranklin, Tina Turner and Diana Ross. Thewomen also play tribute to the disco divasof the 1970s in a hip swaying medley. They are backed by André Swartz on

drums, Jeandre Schultz on guitar, MichaelMcAuleyonbass andMeryl vanNoie onkey-boards.V Kings, Queens and Divas will show at the Roxy Re-vue Bar from Wednesday to Saturday at 20:30 until9 January 2015. Tickets cost R90 from Computicket.

The FamilyMediators’ Association of theCape (Famac) is offering a “free media-tion week” from 26 to 30 October.Divorcing and separating couples often

want to avoid contested court proceeding, but in the strained circumstances it is of-ten impossible for the couple to workthings out on their own. A cheaper alter-native is mediation. It is usuallymuchquicker, cheaper and

less stressful than the legal route, andseven out of ten people are able to reachfull agreement. During free mediationweek, a family mediation session can be

tried for free, whether they qualify for le-gal aid or not.Themediatorwill workwith the couple

to reduce conflict byhelping themconsid-er the issues to be settled and the optionsavailable to them to facilitate an agree-ment. They help couples work towards fi-nancial settlements and focus on theneeds of the children, encouraging paren-tal cooperation if possible.V For more information or to make a booking, phone the Famac secretary Charmaine Esterhui-zen, on 021 801 6176 or email her at [email protected].

Century City runner and three timesComrades winner Vladimir Kotov re-cently returned from his native Bela-

rus where he participated in the Minsk halfmarathon at the invitation of the Belarusminister of sport and president of the Bela-rus Athletic Federation.

Celebrated as a national hero and “thechampion of Belarus”, Vladimir’s recordtime for a half marathon has not been bro-ken in 31 years and his record for the fullmarathon not for 35 years!Vladimir, who runs for the Century City

Athletic Club and owns a sports shoe shopin the Fives Futbal complex inCenturyCity, has been invited back to Belarus again nextyear to not only participate in theMinskhalfmarathon in September, but to precede thiswith a 1 500 km run around the country pro-moting running as a sport.

Hewill be accompanied by fellow long-dis-tance runner David Grier, starting in thetown of his birth, Vitsyebsk, and workinganti-clockwise around the country throughmajor towns such asHrodna, Brest, Homyel,Mahilyow,Orsha,Barysaw, Zhodzina and fi-

nally Minsk in time for the half marathon.“While cycling is ahuge sport inBelarus,

running is not nearly as popular, sowewillbe running 50 km to 60 km a day for amonth to promote running,” he says.Vladimir said this year the Minsk half

marathon attracted 16 000 runners, but hesaid this could easily grow to 25 000 or 30000 in the next year.Still a regular participant in races and

planning on doing both the Two Oceansand the Comrades marathons again nextyear, Vladimir continues to run between15km and 22km a day.Asked how he prepares for races, Vlad-

imir sayswhenhe is not competing, he eatsall kinds of food, but before a competitionhe follows a strict diet with lots of protein.“Aweekbefore the race I switch to carbo-

hydrates eatingmainlypotatoes, breadanddessert, and on the day of the race I haveblack tea with brown bread. Sometimes Ieat a piece of cheese. I don’t advise anyoneto drink coffee or to eat honey before a race. Some types of caffeine can assist you; oth-ers such as that in coffee are a killer.”
