While the majority of suspects were arre- sted in Gauteng, as reported by City Press, a number of them were linked to reconnais- sance and attacks at local malls. The larger group was accosted after police recovered and analysed cellphone data and the operating network of members of the syndicate arrested in Cape Town. The group is currently linked to at least 34 robberies, including those of cellphone and jewellery stores, and a number of ATM bombings, City Press reported. Some of the armed robberies to have hit the Cape since last year include those at Ca- nal Walk, Tyger Valley, CapeGate, Somerset Mall, Zevenwacht Mall, as well as Longbe- ach Mall, Bayside Mall and High Constantia. Data tracking In Kraaifontein, police had reportedly been hunting two suspects involved in the bombing of an ATM inside the Seven Eleven in Northpine on 18 February. Canal Walk and Bayside shopping centres were targeted by robbers in the week of 17 October last year, while the Vodacom store in the Tyger Valley Centre was hit on 3 Octo- ber last year. Zevenwacht Mall in Kuils River as well as the iPic Centre in Soneike, were both targe- ted as far back as April last year. Of these, the most recent was the bombing of an ATM in Bellville, which proved one of the biggest mistakes for at least six suspec- ted members of the syndicate. These suspects were involved in a standoff with a police General at the ATM bombing at the Old Oak Centre on 4 March, and were being tracked by a special police task force. The task force was aware of the six making their way to the Western Cape by bus, City Press reported. Police soon used the data from the sus- pects’ cellphones and surmised the group had been scouting centres in Brackenfell and Tyger Valley – both of which were hit late last year. The suspects are believed to have bombed the ATM after they ran out of money. Two were wounded and arrested on the scene, and the rest at the nearby taxi rank. Their recovered cellphones were used to link them to robberies at Sea Point, Malmes- bury, Canal Walk, Gardens and Stellen- bosch. The six suspects were also believed to ha- ve been involved in the bombing of a Tatter- salls safe in Durban Road on 3 March. Provincial police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said investigations were at an advanced stage. Behind bars According to the Institute for Security Studies, there has been a 143% increase in armed robberies at shopping centres over the past year. But national police spokesperson Lieute- nant General Solomon Makgale told City Press most of the suspects responsible for the robberies in Gauteng and the Western Cape were now behind bars. “There are, however, still a few of their as- sociates – along with the dealers to whom the cellphones are sold – at large. We are now focusing on them.” Police were said to be using the cellphone data and video footage from centres to iden- tify individuals. “All the information is consolidated to compile profiles of the ringleaders, as well as their modus operandi,” Makgale was re- ported as saying. This allowed the creation of a police data- base that could be cross-referenced across the provinces. “It gives us an intelligence picture that al- lows us... to thwart the plans of robbers, par- ticularly at shopping centres,” Makgale was reported as saying. “It is also clear the syndicates are multidi- mensional in that they not only carry out dif- ferent types of robberies, but also hijack ve- hicles, rob ATMs and commit other violent crimes.” Most of the suspects arrested in Gauteng were of Zimbabwean nationality, City Press reported. Some of the suspected members of a countrywide armed robbery syndicate who were arrested in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

Seun en ma ná 47 jaar herenig

Sarie Arangies is hier by haar huis in Ruyter-wacht.

“Toe my foon lui, het ek gewonder wie ditkan wees. Hy sê toe hy isHannes,” vertel Sarie by haar huis in Prin-cess Elizbeth-straat in Ruyterwacht.

kon praat.

Was hy oukei?

“My pa is weer getroud met ’n lieflikevrou. Sy was soos ’n maat vir my en somshet ek haar oor my skouer gedra.

So twee jaar gelede het hy weer in alle ernsna sy ma begin soek.

“Haar nooiensvan was Van Greunen en ekhet uitgevind my oom was die bestuurder

Authorities will now monitor clean-up efforts after aJoostenbergvlakte

trucking company wasbust for oil pollution byCity inspectors.

Environmental healthofficials from the City ofCape Town recently in-spected Western Logis-tix’s premises in Waar-burgh Road after neigh-bours complained aboutoil seeping from theground.

“A winter ago we first noticed the oilsurfacing from the soil, leaving a thickdark oily residue on the grass,” said oneneigbour who wants to remain anony-mous.

“It clung to the grass andnothingwedidgot rid of it, leaving our animals to grazethe polluted grass,” she added.

Another neighbour told TygerBurgerhe sawworkers on the company’s premis-es digging trenches in which to depositused motor oil.

“As a consequence, trees and grass onour properties died. This company is op-erating in an equestrian area with a natu-ralwetlandcloseby.Winter is comingandmore of the same with the rain will leadto poisonous contamination of epic pro-portions. We have animals at risk. Thewetlands are at risk, the water table is atrisk as we believe it has already been af-fected at 120m,” this particular neighboursaid.

Foul liquidCity mayco member for health, Siyabu-

lela Mamkeli, said officials carried out aninspection at the Western Logistix’spremises on 19 March.

“An environmental health practitioner(EHP) found a foul liquid – used oil andsewage water – running directly onto thepremises and into the stormwater chan-

nel, which also affects theabutting premises,” hesaid.

“These activities areunacceptable and definedas a health nuisance, anddefinitely in contraven-tion of the City’s by-lawsand other legislation,” headded.

Mamkeli said the levelof pollution must now bedetermined by environ-mental consultants,

which the owners of company responsiblefor the pollution must appoint to remedythe situation.

“Notices were served on the owner bythe City’s environmental health and wa-ter pollution control sections to immedi-ately cease the pollution and to remedythe site that is polluted.”

Cleanup planMamkeli said the owners must provide

the City with their plan ofaction to remedy the situa-tion by tomorrow (9 April).

“After the mentioneddate, a follow-up inspectionwill be conducted and if noprogress has been made, le-gal action will be takenagainst the offender,” hesaid.

Owner Ferdi Krumm toldTygerBurger they take fullresponsibility for the pollution and un-dertake to cooperate with authorities toprevent any further spills on the propertyand to remedy the affected areas.

However, he denied allegations thatused oil was buried in trenches on the

property. He explains the oil spills as follows:“All the old oil in our trucks gets decant-

ed into a 1000F flexitanker for collectionby theRoseFoundation, a non-profit orga-nisation in Cape Town that collects, stores, recycles and correctly disposes ofused oil,” said Krumm.

Zoning violation“During the last year it happened on

one or two occasions that oil spilled on thesoil while being piped out,” he said.

He said the companywill hire a consult-ant to conduct a full study to determinethe best way in which to rehabilitate thesoil and then see to it that it gets done.

“We are also planning tomove the oper-ation to another location on the other sideof the N1, but have in the meantime ap-plied for the departure from the normalzoning activities of the area,” he said.

Western Logistix is one of tens of com-panies in Joostenbergvlakte slapped withcompliance notices earlier this year for il-legal land use.

City councillor Gerhard Fourie in Jan-uary said the practise of semi-industrialactivities in semi-rural areas had “gone

on for far too long”.Fourie said diesel de-

pots, trucking compa-nies and wedding ve-nues were amongmany companies notlegally zoned for busi-ness activity in Joost-enbergvlakte, andwere served with noti-ces giving them thechoice to close down or

apply for departure from the agriculturalzoning.

These applications, said Fourie, will on-ly be approved in terms of the strict zon-ing legislation and residents given the op-portunity to object.

“Sy is so besig.

There is a unique clinic at theStikland Hospital that helpswean heroin and other opiateaddicts off drugs by offeringsubstitute substances. The Opiod Substitution Ther-

apy (OST) Clinic treats outpa-tients and offers a brief admis-sion for heroin detoxification.Professor Liezl Koen, head of

clinical services at StiklandHospital, said the “highly un-pleasant withdrawal syn-drome” makes it very hard foraddicts to stop using heroin.Abdominal cramps, anxiety,

irritability, muscle aches, diar-rhoea and a raised pulse andblood pressure often makes de-toxing unbearable.“The Heroin Detoxification

Unit offers heroin users a one-week admission to help themthrough this withdrawal peri-od,” Koen said. When more conventional de-

toxmethods failed, substitutiondrugs were employed.“Opioid substitution involves

the use of a medication such asMethadone or Suboxone as asubstitute to heroin use.”She said the medication pre-

vented withdrawal symptoms, reduced cravings and gave pa-tients the chance to “stabilisetheir social functioning and re-duce drug related activities”.“It is considered a safe and ef-

fective treatment for a heroinuse disorder,” she said. The OST Clinic takes place at

the hospital on aMondaymorn-ing from 08:00.“Prior to being admitted to

this unit all clients are expected

to have had an adequate assess-ment, provided with psycho-ed-ucation around the detoxifica-tion process and on dischargeare expected to join a rehabilita-tion centre that will assist cli-ents in maintaining a drug freelifestyle,” said Koen. Before starting the process,

clients are informed of the sideeffects associatedwith substitu-tion therapies, that these treat-ments are currently only avail-able at certain private pharma-cies, and of the costs of thesemedications.Koen said only clients who

have been referred by a socialworker or doctor are allowed touse the clinic’s services and areseen weekly. The clinic has twoin-house psychiatrists and apsychiatric registrar.“Appointment of a full multi-

disciplinary team is availableand is done when appropriate.”Edna Lambrechts, a social

worker in private practice whospecialises in psychiatric servi-ces and addiction care, often as-sists local social developmentorganisationMetroEvangelicalServices. She spoke to Bellville role-

players at a recent meeting.“The Stikland OST Clinic is

very successful. It has the high-est success rate in South Africafor these kind of services,” shesaid. The cost differs per patientper medication and Lam-brechts called on churches andcommunity organisations andNGOs to support the clinic, orsponsor patients requiringtreatment.“We need to get clients into

this service and help sponsorthem,” she said.

Pet theft is on the rise, warns Jennifer Da-vies of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare(FAW).Top breeds targeted are Boerboels, Ger-

manShepherds,Huskies,Malamutes,Wolfhybrids,Rottweilers, PitBull Terrier,Bull-terriers, Staffordshire Bullterriers andGreyhounds.Yorkshire Terriers and other toy breeds

are increasingly popular. Persian and Sia-mese cats are also sometimes taken, Da-vies says.“Many people still don’t realise pet theft

is a very real problem. Stolen animals, usu-ally purebred dogs, are taken mainly forbreeding, guarding or dog fighting.“By not taking proper precautions, you

areputtingyour animals at risk, especiallyif you’ve chosen to keep a high risk breed. It’s very sad because most stolen dog casescould be prevented,” Davies says.According to the National Animal Wel-

fare Task Team, the main reason dogs arestolen is for breeding. Therefore, unneu-tered male dogs, lactating or pregnant fe-males or those on heat, and puppies are atparticular risk.“These ‘puppy mill’ dogs live in horrific

conditions and usually meet an equallyhorrific end,” Davies says.Thieves even lure unneuteredmale dogs

bywalkinganon-heat bitch throughneigh-bourhoods.“By having your pet sterilised, you re-

duce the risk of their theft and save everyanimal yourpetwould otherwisehave end-ed up giving birth to.“Responsible, caring pet owners who ar-

en’t registered breeders should have theirpets sterilised,” Davies says. Most dogs are stolen from their homes

–many are opportunistic crimes, but oftenthieves have been watching for a while.“Never leave dogs – especially puppies

or toy breeds – alone and visible, especiallyif you’re out all day. Consider ‘doggy day-care’ or leave them indoors.“Dogshave evenbeen stolenwhen let out

to ‘do their business’, so accompany them.If need be, separate front and back yardsand hide your dogs at the back. Even ifyour dog avoids strangers, it could still bedrugged or snagged with a catch pole,” shewarns.“Be aware of strangers in the area, in-

cluding children, especially if they arepeering into yards, watching dog walkersor questioning you about your dog.“Never allow dogs to roam the street or

leave them in your car or tied up in frontof a shop,” she says.Davies suggested pet owners put a collar

and tag on their pet and have them micro-chipped.The FAW, which works in the township

of Fisantekraal near Durbanville, hasmany adorable animals up for adoption. Ifyou can’t adopt, butwould like to help, con-sider joining the sponsorship programmefor only R200 per month. Participants willreceive a certificate and information sheeton the dog they have chosen to sponsor.V Visit the FAW at www.faw.za.org or on Facebook, email [email protected] or phone 084 519 0380 forenquiries.

In response to the cat saga. Ilive in Bothasig and have aneighbour who has about fourcats (not counting other cats inthe area).

Cats must be keptin their own yards

We have also had endlessissues with the cats.Just like people love their

cats we love our birds, fish anddog. Never do they cause anyissues in the neighbourhood. They live and stay on ourpremises. The cats have eaten birds and

fish. When I complain to theneighbour he thinks I am theneighbour from hell.We are suppose to love our

neighbours but now they ignoreme like I am the plague. They have replaced fish but

the new ones also got eaten. Oh,and our birds are just commonbirds you can get anywhere. It is not fair, the cats do this

and also poo all over my gardenand dig up our plants.I am just expected to put up

with this and not say anything. If you want cats and love themso much keep them in yourown garden and house.I don’t blame you for shooting

them. Sorry, they don’t under-stand it’s the inconsiderateowners.

A young resident in Stellenbergwas approached by one of thebicycle patrollers while walkinghome recently. Both he and I,and probably most residents inthe area, welcome the investiga-tion. However, the aggressiveand demeaning manner inwhich the patroller addressedthe resident is utterly unaccep-table. He was verbally abusiveto an innocent person. When challenged on his

attitude and his rationale, thepatroller said that he wastipped off by another resident. As it happens, this accostedresident is black and anotherpedestrian who is white wasnot suspected at all. This young man has walked

Racial profiling seemsto be modus operandi

The theory states that maintai-ning and monitoring urbanenvironments to prevent smallcrimes such as vandalism, public drinking and so forthhelps create an atmosphere oforder and lawfulness, therebypreventing more serious crimesfrom occuring.I believe Parow SAPS are

lacking, and crime is spirallingout of control. I previouslywrote a letter to TygerBurgerconcerning the squatters onOccuvision’s stoep, and thisweek I noticed another letter inthis regard.I was hoping the owners of

the building would have donesomething about the squattersby now. Instead, the squattersnow got “promoted” to movinginto the building. What now? What’s next? Are we going towait until they make a hole inthe wall at Lifestyle Fabrics, setthe building alight, use it forall sorts of illegal activities, etc? The owners of the building

really need to be taken to task.Of course this is not the only

building or incident where thepolice choose to look the otherway although they “can clearlysee” that the building is beingoccupied illegally.

Dié toenemende gewilde by-

marathon oor 42,2 km, ’n halfma-rathon oor 21,2 km, ’n 10 km- en5 km-pretloop.

FOTO: GALLO IMAGES

SAREL BURGER

eindstryd tegemoet gegaan sonder

cars are to be seen in a virtual one class for-mat for the first time. This has come aboutafter the class T entries received more mus-cle by being allowed additional turbo boost, larger tyres and unrestricted suspensionmodifications. The results of the three events during the

first round at Zwartkops last month whichsaw Michael van Rooyen’s turbochargedChev Cruze win the first race, with class AAudi S4s in the hands ofHennieGroenewaldand Michael Stephan taking the next two, appear to justify the changes. However, the pit critics were claiming the

tyre wear on the abrasive surface worked tothe benefit of the all wheel drive Audis. Ad-ditionally, Killarney has longer straightsthatmaybeanadvantage for the smaller tur-bocharged Chev and Ford Focus STs.It sounds like a close one.

Driver to watchBrennon Green (Golf 5 GTi) is the Cape’s

only representative in a new production carcategory for privateers. Hismain oppositionis likely to come from Freek Burger Jnr andSnr, who were outstanding at Zwartkops ina pair of Mazda 3 MPSs.

Then there are some who claim the skrikvir niks tigers in the EngenVolkswagen Cupevents are always responsible for some ofthe best racing of the day. Of course the driv-er to watch here is teenager Sheldon van derLinde forwhombig things are being predict-ed. Although Sheldonwon the first round upnorth he was closely shadowed by TasminPepper and Shaun la Reservee, with theCape’s John Craig Jnr not far behind. With a home track advantage, it is going

to be interesting to see how local hotshotsNian duToit and Jurie Swart Jnr fare in thishard fought one-make category.

While the Midas Sport Duratec FormulaFords are the closest we’re likely to get toFormula 1 at Killarney, their racing atZwartkops was more exciting than in theevents at the Albert Park and in KualaLumpur. The sensation in the first race wasthe performance of rookie driver and formerkarter Julian van der Watt, who went on tobeat Robert Wolk and Matthew Merton.UnfortunatelyVan derWatt’s lack of expe-

rience showed when a typical Highveldthunderstorm at the start of the second racebrought out the wet weather tyres and re-sulted in him dropping well down the order.

Victory thenwent toWolkwhowas followedby reigning champion Nicholas van Weeleyand Dewald Brummer.Other events during the day are going to

feature Crossley and Webb sports and GTcars, Midas Sport Clubman cars and MikeHopkins superbikes. There are also going to be combined

events for the V8 Masters and Makita For-mula Supercars. With the first race due off at 10:10, admis-

sion is R90 for adults and R40 for scholarsunder 16. There is no charge for kids under12. Tickets also available fromComputicket.

Killarney will see some top racing action on Saturday during the second round of the South African main circuit championship.

SAREL BURGER

Die afgelope paar jaar was die HS Tyger-berg die Tygerbergstreek se mees toonaan-gewende span in die WP se o.19A-rugby-kompetisie.Maar hierdie toedrag van sake kan van-

jaar verander.

Brackenfell beskik eweneens tans oor ’n
