There is a renewed call for Ravensmeadresidents to take control of their neigh-bourhoods to inspire change.

Subcouncil chairperson Clive Justus waslaying down this challenge then the City in-stalled a new FreeCall line at the Ravens-mead Multi-purpose Centre last week.“The purpose of the FreeCall line is to im-

prove service delivery by increasing accessto the City’s Call Centre,” he said.“It will make engagement with the City

so much easier and at no cost and it can beused to contact the City for various enquir-ies and service requests such as illegaldumping, water leaks, sewer blockages, refuse collection, street lights out, pot holes, damaged roads and account enquiries.”He further pointed out that Subcouncil 4

already had seven FreeCall phones servic-ing the area at theAdriaanse housing office,Goodwood library, Kalksteenfontein com-munity centre, Leonsdale library, Matroos-fontein civic centre, ParowPark housing of-fice, Ravensmead multipurpose centre andUitsig civic centre.Justus explained it is important that ser-

vice requests and logged faults are acknowl-edged and attended to timeously.“This system ensures that where it is nec-

essary for residents to follow up on theirlogged requests, they have their referencenumbers easily at hand.

“The City of Cape Town is pleased that71% of all faults logged with the City wereresolved within 14 days. The remainder ofcomplaints, which include more complexfaults, are being attended to as a matter ofurgency by staff working over-time“This ‘own, love, improve your street’ ini-

tiative urges individuals to invest their

time, effort and passion so that a new caringcommunity spirit will develop. Individualswho take the lead will inspire their fellowcommunitymembers to join them to ensurechange and a community feel.“We would like to see an emergence of

proud, self-reliant and committed residentsthat flourish in their communities.”

scene there were four people in the car, in-cluding the driver.Officers immediately called for medical

help, but one of the passengers had alreadysuccumbed to his injuries and died at thescene. Three of them were rushed to hospi-tal with serious injuries.Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, con-

firmed the incident and said the paramed-ics alongwith other rescue services arrivedon scene and found the light motor vehiclelying on its roof on the side of the road.“On assessment, they found four patients

lying around the vehicle, after they wereejected,” he said.

“Another man lay trapped inside the ve-hicle andone of themen that hadbeen eject-ed from the vehicle was found to have al-ready succumbed to his multiple injuries.“Unfortunately nothing more could be

done for the patient and he was declareddead.”Rescue services had to use the jaws of life

equipment to free the trappedman from thevehicle.Once freed, paramedics treated the pa-

ported to various hospitals for furthertreatment. The cause of the collision is not yet

known but local authorities were on scenefor further investigations.Police are investigating charges of culpa-

Eucalyptusstraat, Eersterivier vermoor. Syis as dood agtergelaat, maar kon daarinslaag om haar aanvallers by ’n hospitaal teidentifiseer. Sy het kort daarna aan haarwonde beswyk.Valencia is 52 keer gesteek en haar keel

huis in Kleinvlei in hegtenis geneem.

Almost 70 attendees, which includedmembers of law enforcement and themetro police from as far as stations inWellington, turned up at the firstworkshop, and although 150 were ex-pected, Honeyman feels it was a roar-ing success.“This was just the start. Once I have

established a care network, the Vrede-lust church and the synod will be sup-porting it. We now just need the buy-infrom the department of safety and se-curity and the police,” she says.Attendees all had to take part in a

survey about how they experience anddeal with stress and trauma. What isalarming about the results of this sur-vey, Honeyman says, is the generalconsensus that there is not enough de-briefing opportunity for officers on theground and that a “us versus them”mentality exists with their manage-ment. The majority also do not feel re-spected and supported by their com-munity.“I would like to meet Dan Plato and

JP Smith now and talk about the re-sults of this survey. We need buy-infrom them to utilise the network ofpsychologists, councillors and socialworkers that is already available.“We also want to build a network of

people who can help on a pro-bono ba-sis with one on one therapy.“What I need right now is sugges-

tions. I need to grow a network andthen I can make informed decisions. This workshop was just the start,”Honeyman says.Immediately after the workshop she

created a Facebook group “Police Careand SupportNetwork”which is steadi-ly growing. “I am already receivingmessages from people who would liketo become involved,” she says.“(MajorGeneral Thembisile) Pateki-

le has not responded to numerousemails I sent,” she says, but adds thatshe will not be discouraged by this.“I bite into something like a pit bull.

I do not let go.” Attendees of the firstworkshopwere sent homewith an “as-sess yourself” worksheet, a question-naire that rates the level that individu-als look after themselves on a physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and rela-tional way. Honeyman says hopefullythis will help to break the perceptionthat it is not OK to talk about trauma.V Contact Louise Honeyman at lou[email protected] or visit the Police Care and Support Network Facebook pagefor information or to join.

Louisa wants toempower youthGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

Louisa da Silva has not let a disabilitydestroy her dreams of empowering hercommunity.

After suffering from a hearing impair-ment for most of her life, a cochlear implanthas restored some of her hearing and shehas been part of helping others get the oper-ation.

As a professional hairdresser she is nowon a mission to inspire others to achievetheir dreams of empowerment by openinga hair care school for youth in the Ravens-mead area.

“My life was not a bed of roses and manypeople doubted my ability because of mydisability,” she says. “I did not view myselfin this light. Instead, I allowed my go-getterattitude and determined nature to push metowards my goals.

“I had to work hard to be where I am butI am passionate about my calling. Now Iwant to inspire the youth in my communityto do the same.”

Her project got off the ground earlier thisyear when two classrooms were made avail-able for her at Florida High School.

“The classrooms are there but still needto be fitted out with the required equip-ment,” she said. “These rooms need to beready soon in order for us to be able to sub-

mit the application for accreditation. “Ac-creditation would be the last hurdle intomaking this dream a reality, the realitywhich will create futures for our youth. Wedesire the support of the community, localbusinesses and entrepreneurs to assist inour endeavours.”

She pointed out that they hosted a fund-raising event earlier this year and now plana grand Sunday lunch for 1 November.

“We will be hosting this event in the Cra-venby civic centre and we guarantee thateveryone will have an exciting afternoon oftasty treats and entertainment. Everythingis in place but we are still looking for somesponsors to comeonboardwith special priz-es or goodie bags for the supporters.”

Da Silva added that the name of the facili-ty will be the Excelle Hair Academy withcommunity upliftment being the primarygoal.

“In a community where the youth seemsto be aimlessly wondering into a dismal fu-ture,mydesire is to give themanopportuni-ty for growth and success.

“I believe that this facility will be a mas-sive stepping stone to inspire them to reacha positive potential in life. My dream is tosee them succeed in their lives.”

No licence disc renewal noticeswere is-sued in September and October andmanymotorists nowhave to pay fines

for late renewals because they were not no-tified. This is because of the National De-partment of Transport’s (DOT) transfer ofthe ElectronicNational Traffic InformationSystem (eNaTIS) to the Road Traffic Man-agement Centre.TheCity’sMaycomember for finance, Ian

Neilson, has now called on DOT and theRoad Traffic Management Centre to sortthis problem out before November, which,he says, is traditionally the busiest monthof the year for vehicle disc renewals.

Motorists are normally issued with re-newal notices three to fourweeks before theexpiry date on the current licence disc. Li-cence discs that expire on 31 October willbe renewable until 21 November.

Nielsenurgesmotorists to act proactivelyto ensure that the necessary arrangementsaremade and to renew discs online at http://goo.gl/Kql0tT.“Under the Motor Vehicle Licensing tab,

click on ‘register’ (for newapplicants) or ‘lo-gin’ (for those already registered for e-Ser-vices). You will be prompted to complete anonline registration form and will be re-quired to upload the necessary documents.”The applicationprocess takes threework-

ing days for new applicants and two work-ing days for applicants who are already reg-isteredHe says the City’s call centre can be

phoned on 0860 103 089 to find out theamount owing.Alternatively, motorists can visit their

nearest vehicle licensing office.“Take your identity document, complete

a green Application for Licencing of MotorVehicle form (ALV form), and renew yourlicence at the counter,” Neilsen says.

Reverend Oscar Peter Bougardt, right, and Pastor Johnny Scheepers get ready for theirweekly run to fight hunger in the area.

Pastors on ameaty missionGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

Two pastors from Delft are on a mis-sion to fight hunger where it isneeded most.

Every week for the past two years Rev-erend Oscar Peter Bougardt and PastorJohnnyScheepers ofCalvaryHOPEmin-istries feed between 600 to 2 500 peoplewith bread, meaty bones, stew meat andpotatoes.Based at Mandela Peace Park in The

Hague they are striving to go beyondput-ting food on tables.“Poverty on the Cape Flats is a reality,

and we can’t do nothing while familiesstarve and go to bed hungry,” said Bou-gardt. “We bless hundreds of people inthis area every Wednesday, and our dea-con visits Voorbrug.“During the school holidays we dis-

tributed more than 2 500 loaves of freshbread to poor and needy families aroundthe Cape Flats and we also supplied aschool holiday programme at MandelaPeace Parkwithmuch-needed bread andjuices so that children can have lunchdaily.

Support from USA, UK“Our main objective is to add value to

the lives of poor and needy and to feedas many households possible.”Bougardt further explained that their

church was now on the verge of steppingup operations but needed some assist-ance.“Through the grace of God our hard

work has been noticed by people as farafield as the USA and UK, and as a result

of this we have a donor who is willingto erect a structure so that we will notonly feed more people daily, but alsohave a counselling facility for people ad-dicted to substances, a crèche for moth-ers who cannot afford to put their chil-dren in one, and a centre that will assistwomen and children in abusive relation-ships.”

Land needed firstHe added that they can get more dona-

tions from various companies and part-ners abroad, but they first need a pieceof land to erect a structure.“The structure will serve as a church

on Sunday but it will be in operationseven days a week to serve a communityin need. We will cook food daily for poorand needy and also plant a vegetable gar-den to sustain ourselves.”Bougardt also added that the possibili-

ties for their work were limitless butthey needed the help of the municipalityor other authorities.“We arewilling to sign a lease with the

municipality, but this structure will bein the community for the community. We are urgently looking for land in TheHague area to serve the community.“Besides serving people ofDelftwe vis-

it areas to bless poor and needy familiesand we also have a project that will see300 poor families receive grocery ham-pers for Christmas. I call on readers toplease donate non-perishable foods, likecanned foods, sugar and rice to help usreach more families during this festiveseason.”V For more information about the project or donations call Reverend Bougardt on 072 422 2344.

Sewerage solutions for the City are un-der construction.

The City of Cape Town’s water andsanitation department has commencedconstruction of the second phase of its CapeFlats 3 bulk sewer (CJ3) project.

The contractor will soon be setting uptheir site offices in the vicinity of YusufGool Boulevard in Rylands and commenc-ing with the test holes along the proposedpipe route.

This project is a critical component of theCity’s sewer network and serves a popula-tion of approximately 350 000 residents inthe Bonteheuwel, Heideveld, Manenberg,Gugulethu and Nyanga areas. This projectforms part of the City’s sanitation masterplan, which comprises infrastructure en-hancement of the sewer reticulation sys-tem, and will ultimately be completed bythe end of 2017 at a total cost of approxi-mately R280 million.

The construction of the second phase ofthe CF3, and the extra capacity this willprovide, will allow the City to periodicallydecommission other sewer infrastructurein the area for much-needed maintenanceand rehabilitationduringproblems suchasblockages.

AECOM was appointed as the consultingengineer and CSV Construction was ap-pointed as the engineering contractor forthe project. They established the most via-ble pipeline route for Phase 2 of the CF3 inconsultation with various City depart-ments, stakeholders, and the general pub-lic, taking into account current and futuredevelopments within the catchment area.

“The City is pleased that the project cannow proceed,” said the City’s mayoral com-mittee member for utility services, ErnestSonnenberg.

“It will ensure that we have sufficient ca-pacity in our sewer network to limit the im-pact of blockages. However, I would alsolike to call upon our residents to refrainfrom disposing of items into their sinks andtoilets that could block up the network.Common causes of blockages are rags andcooking fat/grease. We need residents’ co-operation to ensure that surcharges as a re-sult of blockages are minimised.”

Notices of road closures and construc-tion activities that may affect certain areaswill be communicated to the public. Prop-erty owners, pedestrians and traffic flowwill be accommodated as best as possible.

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz

Janine van Rooy, better known asBlaq Pearl, a talented singer, poetand cultural activist, is reaching

out to the world as a writer with thepublication of her first book.

She has worked with some of thebest in the business and describesher style as a blend of African soul, jazz, hip-hop and R&B.

Now she is a published author andlike most of her projects she did notwait for publishers to come knockingon her door – she tackled it all on herown.

“My love for writing started in pri-mary school. I simply loved readingand writing and discovered that itcounted in my favour when I was topof my class almost every year,” shesays.

“I guess my active imagination al-so played a part. I always had storiesand words in my head even when Ireached my word limit in essays andtasks.

“When I was about 12, I startedwriting my first piece of expression.I faced many challenges growing upin Mitchell’s Plain, Beacon Valley, soI used my writing to help me dealwith it.

“I still do, but now in my 30s, I still haveto deal with various issues and challenges, just like many other people, and my writingis like a tool for coping and healing.”

Like somany other talentedartists hailingfrom the Cape Flats, her love for music start-ed in church.

“Growing up, there was always an oppor-tunity in our church to perform – either ina play, the Sunday school choir or a talentshow or something.

“I am grateful for that. It helped me to de-

velop confidence. Furthermore I often per-formed for family at gatherings and then, asyou know now, I perform on various stagesto different people in the world.

“I just love sharing my gift; my talent. Per-formance gives me the platform to be freeand in touch with my deeper, angelic being.I transcend to another realm, in a way.

“It also allows for engagement and connec-tion with the audience. I know we as humanbeings have much in common and that soulconnection moves beyond all our differen-ces.”

She is very excited about this, her firstpublication that is a collection of herwriting, and explained that it was in theplanning stages for two years.

“Somehow I always found a reason tonot ‘just do it!’ It somehow seemed morecomplicated and that put me off.

“I guess now the time was just right!”she laughs.

She calls her bookKaradaa!, meaning“kyk daar” (look there) or “here’s thespace, just take it”.

The main themes in her writing areabout issues in society and also abouther experiences in love and relation-ships.

“This book includes my writing frommy teenage years until now, my thir-ties,” she explains.

“I chose these poems, songs and sto-ries to share with the reader – firstly, tosomehow get to know me a bit, then ofcourse I’d like to raise issues and solu-tions to things we face in this day andtime that anyone can relate to.

“Knowledge enables us to have thechoice to do something. For me the wordgoes with the deed, so I hope thatthrough my writing the reader gets tofind some relation (knowing you are notalone), a sense of release, solution towhatever problem they face now, whichI faced at some point.”

Janine also pointed out that the publica-tion of her book has also been an inspirationfor the future.

“For the future there’s still a lot more instore – more love, more poetry, stories andmusic; more performances and active in-volvement in society.

“I look forward to positive growth, so youtoo can look forward to more books, more al-bums, more moves!”V The book is available directly from her on blaq[email protected], or inbox her on Facebook, Janinevan Rooy (Blaq Pearl).

Pearl also a poet and authorThe Family Mediators’ Association ofthe Cape (Famac) is offering a “freemediationweek” from26 to 30October.

Divorcing and separating couples of-ten want to avoid contested court pro-ceeding, but in the strained circum-stances it is often impossible for thecouple towork thingsout on their own.

A cheaper alternative to consider ismediation.

It is usually much quicker, cheaperand less stressful than the legal route, and seven out of ten people are able toreach full agreement. During free me-diation week, a family mediation ses-sion can be tried for free, whether theyqualify for legal aid or not.

The mediator will work with thecouple to reduce conflict by helpingthem consider the issues to be settledand the options available to them to fa-cilitate an agreement.

They help couples work towards fi-nancial settlements and focus on theneeds of the children, encouraging pa-rental cooperation wherever possible.V For more information or to make a booking, call Charmaine Esterhuizen on 021 801 6176or send her an email at [email protected].

KILLARNEY: RACING AT ITS BEST

Viper cantake Lambo

Francis Carruthers closely followed by Johan Engelbrecht, are two ofthe local sport and GT drivers to keep an eye on on Saturday.

PHOTO: DAVE COLINS

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

With exciting sports carentries that include thefirst appearance of

Charl Arangies in his racingV10 Lamborghini Galardo LM2at Killarney, the Cape round ofthe national Extreme Festivalon Saturday promises to be oneof the best ever.

The result of the battle be-tween the Lamborghini andCraig Jarvis’s 8.4 litre V10Dodge Viper that has finallybeen cured of its transmissionproblems is difficult to predict.

However, with current cham-pion Francis Carruthers (JunoSS3), Gauteng driver NickyDicks (Porsche GT3 Cup) andJohan Engelbrecht, who was inmagnificent form in his PorscheGT2R during the most recentround of the Extreme Festival atthe Zwartkops Raceway inGauteng also on the entry list, the Lambo and Viper may nothave the advantage of a cleartrack.

Then there’s the South Afri-can Production Car series thatis still wide open and is current-ly being fought out between thesuper quick all-wheel-drive S4Audis of Michael Stephan (En-gen Extreme) and a pair of Sasolentries that have been entrust-ed to former WesBank champi-on Hennie Groenewald andGennaro Bonafede.

Others who have to be consid-ered here include Simon Mossin another Engen Extreme AudiS4, Graeme Nathan (GenuineParts Golf GTi) and possiblyGreg Maloney in his quick MiniCooper S.

The Cape challenge is beingprovided by a selection of BMWmodels in the hands of Ebrahim

Levy, Junaid Slamang, AchmatAchmat and Philip Booysen.

Although teenage star Shel-don van der Linde (VW Polo) isexpected to be the guy to beat inthe Engen Volkswagen Cupevents, he will not find it easyagainst the likes of DanielRowe, Shaun Le Reservee andimpressive young lady driverTasmin Pepper.

With the Single Seater For-mula Ford events, the closest toF1 anyone is ever likely to seeat Killarney, the entry list offersinteresting reading.

Apart from a pair of Van Die-mens in the hands of leadingcontenders Nicholas van Weelyand Allen Meyer, the balance ofthe field consists of a variety ofMygale models.

Drivers to watch here includeformer champions Ian Schofieldand Robert Wolk.

An excellent entry has alsobeen received for the Bold Ma-rine GTi Challenge eventswhere reigning champion PaulSimon will be defending hiscrown against the likes of fellowclass C driver Ebrahim Levy.Ahead of them, the battle will al-most certainly be fought out be-tween class A front runnersChristopher Swart, Bessie Bes-ter and the aggressive youngMarco Busi.

While the racing will be themain attraction, there will be ahost of static events to empha-sise the festival’s family appeal. These include a fun fair with anumber of carnival rides, dis-plays of racing cars and motor-cycles, radio controlled modelplanes and high altitude stiltwalkers, while a 170-year oldPenny-Farthing bicycle will beon the circuit during the lunchbreak.

SAREL BURGER

Solly Peters (6/74) en Jona-than Schwerin (32*) was Edgemeadse staatmakers.
