As Youth Month draws to a close, young people in the communityare calling for the root causes ofcrime to be crushed.
Reacting to news of the successesof the new undercover gang unit, that included finding a 14-year-oldgirl actively involved with gang ac-tivity, some of the young people
that were interviewed over thisweekend, confirmed that this wasonly the tip of the iceberg of youngpeople caught in this downward spi-ral into crime.
In recent operations this special-ised unit of the City of Cape Town, that started in December last year, has had some successes with ar-rests of gang members for posses-sion of drugs, and confiscation ofvarious drugs and firearms.
By forming a focused and dedicat-ed unit for what is an endemic prob-lem in the city, it was hoped that in-telligence could be gathered thatwould lead to the apprehension ofknown gang leaders in communi-ties.
This past weekend there were anumber of anti-crime initiativesthat took place, starting with an ex-ercise in Blikkiesdorp that wasdone by the Provincial Community
Police Forum in conjunction withlocal police and neighbourhoodwatches.
Antheas Boois is a 19-year-oldthat lives in the area and welcomedthe action in the area, but felt thatthe time had come for authorities tolook beyond these exercises andstart stronger preventative meas-ures.
“Just look around you, there isnothing for us to do,” she said.
“I am lucky that my faith keepsme strong, but many of my friendsare into drugs, hanging out with thegangsters, and are living withouthope.
“I am glad that there is a gangunit that is working in our commu-nities, even though I know nothingabout it, but our children must begiven a better chance to stay awayfrom the gangs in the first place.”

. From page 1.On Sunday the Elsies River Multi Stake-
holder Forum hosted the Positive Virus In-terfaith Youth Programme at the AdriaanseCivic hall, and many speakers echoed theneed for communities to band together in thefight against crime.
While MEC for community safety Dan Pla-to was there with a strong message of sup-port for the initiative in Elsies River, it wassome of the youth speakers that highlightedthe need to fight the root causes of crime thatare destroying the youth.
Deon Klein was one of the speakers whospoke with passion about growing up in anarea where there were no positive role mod-els for the youth.
“My biggest influence in my life as a youngperson was a major gangster in the area,” he
said.“I looked up to him and all I wanted to do
was show him that I could do everything badthat he wanted me to do.
“It was nothing for us to find animals likecats and dogs in the area and torture and killthem, just for pleasure, and I did not realisethe evil that I was being led to.
“I have been through the worst of this kindof life and have been blessed to be able toturn my back on it, but we need more pro-grammes out there to show the children thatthere is no hope for them in that kind of life,”he said.
Outside the hall a group of young boys andgirls from a nearby school, agreed withKlein’s story pointing out that there were toomany horror stories of friends who had fall-en into this trap of crime.
One of the young girls (who did not wantto be named) was particularly outspokenabout the need for positive role models.
“Too many of us are influenced by nega-tive role-models that we see on televisionand in music,” she said.
“The girls look at some of these things andall they see is how the must be ‘bad’ to bepopular, and they live out these fantasies bystarting to have no respect for themselves.
“That is when the boys, and the gangsters, start abusing them, they get pregnant andtheir whole future is destroyed. As youngpeoplewewant the chance to achievebeyondthese circumstances, and the governmentmust start doing something more than form-ing gang units.
“The root of our problems must be de-stroyed.”

Hard work by Delft detectives is puttingcriminals behind bars.
Last week brigadier Hendrik Jansen, sta-tion commander of Delft, praised his detec-tives for a long prison sentence handed outat the Bellville Regional Court recently.
In November 2010, police recovered thebody of 55-year-old Ernest Stevens who livedin Barnie Court, Leiden.
He was found with multiple stab woundsand it was alleged that the 24-year-old sus-pect attacked the deceased with no valid rea-son.
Stevens was on the way to buy beers at anearby shebeen at the time of the incident.
The suspect, Carollissen Bradley Banisi-mo, from Delft was sentenced to 15 years im-prisonment, on a charge of murder at theconclusion of the trial recently.
Jansen said that his personnel are dedicat-ed to solving crimes and that the prison sen-tence received by the suspect supports theirefforts in eradicating serious and violentcrimes.
The investigating officer, detective war-rant officer Glenton Manuel, has expressedhis appreciation to the witnesses who sup-ported the state’s case and presented evi-dence, which led to the conviction and sen-tence.
. Jansen also had praise for the efforts ofa team of detectives under the command ofthe investigating officer, detective constableEgan Knoop, for the arrest of three suspectslinked to a murder that police were investi-gating.
On Saturday 9 June at about 10:00, Knooparrested the two suspects in Kalksteenfon-tein and seized the vehicle used during thecrime.
The third suspect evaded arrest at thetime, but on Wednesday 20 June the 30-year-
old was taken into custody. All the suspects are being detained and
face charges of murder.. Brigadier Dotty Adonis, cluster com-
mander for the Delft cluster, has also com-mended police on patrol for their excellentresponse which resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect in an armed robbery inci-dent. The incident happened in Belhar whena family in Strelitzia Street was held up bythree armed men who forced their way intothe house.
These suspects then proceeded to rob thefamily of laptops, electronic equipment, aplasma screen TV and cellular telephones, tothe value of R50 000.
After police were notified, a radio bulletinwas broadcast about the vehicle which fledthe scene, and within 30 minutes the vehiclewas spotted in Symphony Way, Delft.
After several attempts the vehicle wasstopped and the suspect arrested. His accom-plices fled on foot and are yet to be arrested.
The stolen items were recovered, while thesuspect is detained until his court appear-ance on various charges.
According to the investigating officer thesuspect has cases pending for similar offenc-es committed in the Muizenberg and Gugu-lethu areas.
. Police are also looking for informationregarding the death of an unknown man inthe area. On Sunday 17 June at about 06:30police were called to the scene where thebody was found in the N2 Gateway area.
The deceased was in his late 20s.Anyone who might have witnessed the in-
cident or has information on the crime is re-quested to contact the investigating officer,Det Const Fred Peter on 021 954 9062/3/4.

Making a difference in Blikkiesdorp isgoing tobe the focusof thisyear’sMande-la Day for a foundation with heart.
The Boundless Heart Foundation will becollaborating with the community, as wellas various other organisations with the ideaof fulfilling the vision of International Man-dela Day by providing a platform to “Takeaction, inspire change, make every day aMandela Day”.
This year the organisation’s initiativewants to mobilise people, organisations andvolunteers around the common goal ofworking in Blikkiesdorp around a numberof projects in the area.
Chairperson of the foundation, AndrewGasnolar, said that they wanted to work ona number of projects to benefit the people inthis area.
“We are hoping to establish a library forthe residents in a container, where volun-teers can read to the youth and start a Read-a-thon day where we show that reading is
not just an educational tool, but it can be funas well,” he said.

Making the right choices was the messagegiven to youngsters at a youth rally in Bell-ville South.
The Youth Celebration was recently heldat the Bellville South Civic Centre as the fo-cus for June fell on the welfare of young peo-ple.
Schools from the area were invited to theevent where the theme for the day was “MyLife, My Choice”.
Local ward councillor Mercia Kleinsmithwas one of the organisers and said that vari-ous activities took place and information ta-bles were available to the youth to access in-formation ranging from bursaries, health, and career opportunities.
“The strong message that we wanted to putout to the youth at this event is that theymust realise that their lives belong to themand they must make the decisions that willaffect them,” she said.
“Sometimes itseems as if they areafraid of making theright choices forthemselves and at thisevent we wanted toteach them how im-portant those choicesare and that theymustnot be intimidated ormanipulated by theirfriends, even their cir-cumstances.”
The event also high-lighted health issuesthat youth face in us-ing or abusing sub-stances as well as thethreat posed by TB, HIV/Aids, and other dis-eases.
Dhakir Christians, another facilitator atthe event, pointed out that part of the day wasalso hearing from former addicts about their
experiences was a wake-up call for many ofthe participants.
“Hearing how wrong choices wreckedlives really hit home, and I hope that theyouth realise that there is help at hand.”

What’s in a name?
John Ramsay Senior Secondary in BishopLavis have decided that staying true to thehistory of the school is important when itcome to the original name of the school.
Principal Quentin Newman explained thathe had recently come across a copper platewith the name “John Ramsay High School”which must have been the official name ofthe school when it opened in 1970.
“For some reason the name changed to be-ing a senior secondary school some years lat-er, but I feel that this is a mistake and it hadto be rectified.
“There is nothing ‘senior’ or ‘secondary’about our learners because we want them toaspire to higher learning and that is done ata ‘high’ school,” he said.
The school recently celebrated their “re-naming” when Sanlam sponsored the newsignage for the school.

The juniors of the Ravensmead FC will behosting a potjiekos competition on Saturdayand you’re invited to taste the treats.
It will be taking place at Florida Park SportsField where the club will also be hosting someof their home games.
This means that the community and pa-rents can also enjoy some of the young soccertalent in action with the ball, and then sampletheir cooking skills.
Sales should start at 12 noon and the foodwill be sold at R10 per plate.
Specialneedspassengerswill be celebrat-ing MyCiTi’s universal access plan, which will ensure that no-one is left bythe wayside.
Ease of access for the disabled, the elderly, young children, passengers with large suit-cases, surfboards or prams, and even preg-nant women is receiving special attentionfrom MyCiTi.
“MyCiTi has such a comprehensive, well-considered plan that it is leading the way onuniversal access in South Africa and inter-nationally,” says Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater for the City of CapeTown.
“Special needs passengers constitute alarge part of any population, but in generalfew of these people use public transport be-
cause they assume it is not for them. It mightnot be close enough to their homes, or theycan’t board easily, or they do not feel safe aspassengers.”
The transport service hired a universal ac-cess consultant who is, himself, also a wheel-chair user – Guy Davies.
He says that between 10 percent and 20 per-cent of any population is disabled, and onein three households in South Africa is affect-ed by disability.
Universal access facilities on the MyCiTiservice include tactile paving to help theblind locate the stations and platforms; in-duction loops at ticket kiosks for the hearingimpaired; CCTV cameras monitored by acontrol centre, and even tactile signage andmaps.
There will also be boarding bridges ontoall the buses including the smaller ones.
Access easy for disabledMyCiTi buses will cater to the needs of all commuters.

In a bid to assist communitymembers with obtaining a learn-er’s licence, a whopping amounthas been allocated by Subcouncil4.
The sum of R135 000 has been allo-cated to assist 50 people to obtaintheir learner licence.
This announcement was revealedin the subcouncil meeting whichwas held at the Parow offices on
Thursday. The process will be open to any-
one in the appropriate age categorywho wants a learner’s licence.
Interested people can apply to beparticipants when advertising be-comes available soon.
“The main objective of the projectis to assist selected communitymembers in obtaining a learner’s li-cence in Code 08 category,” saidSubcouncil 4 chair, Clive Justus.
“The underlying goal is to pro-vide a possible source of livelihood
or occupation and skills develop-ment for the youths consideringthat some of them have not had theopportunity for formal educationand hence are unskilled renderingthem unemployable.”
He says this decision follows afterit has become increasingly clearthat driving is an essential socio-economic skill for a majority ofSouth Africans.
“The transportation sector hasbeen a source of employment formany people particularly those
from disadvantaged communitieswho have been able to make a livingoff driving as a profession.
“This demand for drivers has notabated over the years; if at alltrends show an increase in the de-mand for better skilled drivers inthe country.Avalid driver’s licencehas become a prerequisite for mostpublic and private sector jobs with-out which employment is neverguaranteed.”
He added driving has become anemployable skill which facilitates
the entrance of South Africans intothe job market either as drivers orany other occupation that requiresthe possession of a driver’s licence.
“We have five wards in Subcoun-cil 4 and 10 people from each wardwill stand a chance to apply and bea participant,” Justus explained.
“We want everyone to take upthis opportunity. They will havetheir learner’s licence for a yearand will be able to accumulate themoney to obtain their driver’s li-cence,” he added.

Kevin is deesdae ’n Mosselbaaierná 20 jaar in Gauteng. Dis hier waarhy rus gevind het, vertel hy. “Mos-selbaai herinner my aan Rusten-burg toe ek ’n kind was (Kevin ishier gebore en getoë). Dis soos ’nklein dorpie. Die mense is laid back– my soort mense.”
we.

For most golfers the dream of play-ing the Old Course at St Andrewsin Scotland will remain just that, but for local golfer Hugo du Toitthis dream will become a realitythis week.
Du Toit (Bellville) will representSouth Africa in the World One-arm Open Championships from 30June to 6 July.
St Andrews is widely regardedas the cradle of the game. Thisyear golfers from 27 countries willtee off in this the 75th edition of thetournament which was originallyfounded to accommodate soldierswounded in World War I.
Says Du Toit: “I’m cerebrallydisabled in the left side ofmybody,so I can only play with my righthand.Golf ismypassion in life andI will be forever grateful for the op-
portunities this game has present-ed me.
“I’ve had the privilege to workat Fancourt, Arabella and DeZalzewhich are some of the premierclubs in the country.
“In previous championships weplayed on some spectacular cours-es in Ireland and Scotland.
“I’ve made it to the semi-finalson three occasions and won ourSouth African One-arm Champi-
onship in 1998, 1999 and 2003,”hesays.
“The Old Course is somethingspecial, I have had the honour ofwalking on the course a few timesbut never played on it. We alsohave the courtesy to play practiserounds before the tournamentstarts,” said Du Toit with a hugesmile.
He is also most proud of the wayable bodied golfers respect disa-
bled players of the game.“It is always uplifting and spe-
cial to see the impact we as disa-bled golfers have on the ‘normal’golfers.
“They have the utmost respectfor us and how good some of us canplay the game.
“The camaraderie is fantastic, and just one of the reasons whythis is the greatest game everplayed,” he said.

Belhar Spurs will play host to Wayside Wan-derers on Saturday in a Super League matchof the Northern Suburbs Football Associationat Erica Park in Belhar.
After yet another defeat, Wayside Wander-ers now have 10 under their belt and have stillnot managed to win a game this season.
Their most recent defeat came at the handsof Eastern Rovers, but their loss was not atrue reflection of the game. They can walkaway with their heads held high, having cre-ated breathtaking attacks that brought outthe best in the Eastern Rovers’ goalkeeper.
Towards the end of the encounter Waysidedominated proceedings with the combinationof players that were still on the field.
With the players at coach Cedric Reeding’sdisposal, the idea of clashing with Waysideshould instill fear in the hearts of the oppo-
nents, but it hasn’t worked in their favour yet.Following the Eastern Rovers’ encounter
Reeding clearly stipulated his team does notdeserve to be placed at the bottom of the log,and although heads are hanging low at thispoint he still has faith in his players.
Let’s hope the team will reward him for hisfaith and pull off an extravagant display offootball and obtain maximum points.
“It is a bit of a problem trying to keep upconfidence, but I think that we’ll turn itaround,”he says. “It’s verydifficult andwe’venever been in this type of situation wherewe’ve started the season season so badly.
“We normally have big starts and then fadetowards the end of the season. We know wedon’t deserve to be in this situation and don’tfeel that we are in a hole.’’
. Bellville United come up against BellstarUnited in Bellville South.
Roy Campbell, the Bellstar coach, says the
players have to maintain their concentrationand not allow the Bellville youngsters anyroom on the ball.
“Bellville have a lot of youngsters, whichmeans we have to make sure we don’t givethem space and time on the ball because that’soneof the reasonswedrawa lot of our games.”
The Bellstar United coach is doing a verygood job with the young players and it is goodto see the club promoting more of these gemsto the senior team.
Campbell also explained that Bellstar Unit-ed go into every match looking for a win re-gardless of the opponent or match.
“As a team we have adopted a winning men-tality for every game we play and it doesn’tmatter if it is a competitive or a friendlymatch. The bottom line is we play to win.”
. Invincible Cravenby welcome Trinitari-ans in their league encounter at Cravenby onSaturday.
