The mayor of Cape Town and a number of senior leaders metin Durbanville for an “open discussion” and to renew tiesand confirm partnerships last Thursday.

The function revolved around the development of Greater Ty-gerberg as the city’s next economic hub, said Professor ErwinSchwella of Stellenbosch University’s School for Public Leader-ship, one of the selected invitees.“The event was arranged to garner further impetus for the Gre-

aterTygerbergPartnership (GTP) and the cooperation of theCity,partners, business, academics and civil organisations,” Schwellasaid.“It’s been about two years since the founding of the GTP and

we felt this kind of contact was necessary,” he said.“The event was not to reach a formal agreement but served ra-

ther to confirmand celebrate the social contract between the part-ners.”

InterconnectedSchwella and Sam Pienaar, a Bellville councillor charged with

problem buildings, were key organisers of the meeting.Pienaar rightly called it an “open discussion with very senior

leaders about development in the northern suburbs”.Guests included GTP chair Dr Musa Shezi, the Rectors Wim

de Villiers and Tyrone Pretorius from Stellenbosch Universityand University of the Western Cape respectively, and Sanlam bo-ard of directors’ chairman Desmond Smith, among others.GTP CEO Chris O’Connor was unable to attend the event.“Chris does excellent work and we would have loved to have

him there,” Schwella said.Regarding the development of the area, mayor Patricia de Lille

said any such projects would see to the growth of cities and bringbenefits to the economy, job-creation and investor returns.“We see the Greater Tygerberg region as an important econo-

mic node in the city. With our vision to create an interconnectednetwork of economic hubs around the city, the importance of Ty-gerberg as a region cannot be underestimated,” said De Lille.

le vervoerdepartement en Golden ArrowBus Services (Gabs) woed reeds sedert 2009,toe klagtes deur inwoners begin instroomhet oor dié busdiens.

Die redes was veelvuldig: busbestuurderswat glo te vinnig teen te steil afdraendes indie area afry en stoptekens ignoreer in tesmal strate.

Corné Verhoeven was in 2011 die voorsit-ter van die Proteavallei-inwonerskomiteeen het toe reeds formeel oor Gabs gekla bydie provinsiale vervoerdepartement.

Dyke sê al hul busse het wel operateursli-sensies wat hulle toelaat om oral dienste temag lewer. Sy sêGoldenArrow sal voortaan’n aanpassing maak sodat die volle opera-teurslisensie met roetebeskrywing op elkebus se voorruit ten toon gestel word.

“Ons vra dat inwoners eindelikhulmotie-we ondersoek om Golden Arrow se dienstete probeer staak in die gebied.”

Six decades of marriage celebrated

Peter (95) and Thelma (87) have weathered many storms together in their 65­year union. Herethey celebrate his 95th birthday in January.

Theirs is a love story spanning six dec-ades, with a first dance in the middleof the street on Christmas day to the

melody of “Silent Night”.Add a war, a wait of five years before they

were allowed tomarry, and a life spent faith-fully supporting each other.Peter (95) andThelmaBest have been toge-

ther for 65 years. The couple live in theGeor-ge and Annie Starck Home in Bellville, butbefore that they spent most of their lives inBoston, having occupied one of the first everhomes there in 12th Avenue with their twochildren.Because Thelma is in the frail care unit

at the home, their story was told by the cou-ple’s daughter Michele Hlozek, from its be-

ginning on 31 May 1950.Peter goes to the frail care unit twice a day

duringvisitinghours to seehis belovedwife.“My father visits her every day, twice a

day,” Michele said. “In pouring rain, he willnot miss a visit to mymom. I tell him to stayand rest, Mom will understand, but he in-sists that no, no, ‘I’ll do anything for Mom-my,” Michele says fondly.

Dancing in the streetThe couple have known each other since

Thelma was eight-years-old and Peter 16.Thelma’s family rented one of the housesowned by Peter’s family.He knew of her, but when he was about 17,

he went off to fight inWordWar II. Hermomand her family then moved away.Her father came back from the war in Au-

gust 1945, Michele says.He had spent years in a camp in Germany

as a prisoner of war.“My grandmother’s birthday was on

Christmas day,” Michele recalls. “They hada very sacred family tradition, where thechildren and family members would get to-gether at midnight and sing Christmas car-ols, then give my grandmother her birthdaypresents.”Michele says on that day, Peter was out

with a girlfriend in Sea Point, getting in-creasingly frustrated as time was slippingby as he worried about missing the familygathering.“They took the last train home. He ran all

the way from the girlfriend’s house and gothome at 01:20. He remembers that perfectly.“When he entered, everyone was singing

Christmas carols. Mymother was also therewith her mother. They were, of course,friends of the family.“My dad started singing along. Then he

put his arm around my mother,” Michelesays. “They’ve supported each other sincethen.”

Her dadwalked hermother’s family homeand before he left, Peter and Thelma stoodin the middle of the road slowly dancing to“Silent Night”.“My grandmother was furious. She stood

watching them through the window. Shewould not condone their relationship. At thetime, mymother was only 17, my father was25. My grandmother wanted them to wait toget married.”But love has its own ways.

Love struckIn the five intervening years until their

marriage, a love struck Thelma would sit atthe kitchen window waiting for Peter towalk through a patch of trees towards herevery night. The couple married when Thel-ma turned 21, and 31May 1950 was their spe-cial date.Theymoved into thehome inBostonwhen

Thelma was pregnant with Michele and her

elder brother, Gary, was six-years-old.BetweenMichele andGary, theBests have

three grandchildren and three great-grand-children.The eldest grandchild is 30 and the young-

est great-grandchild is two-years-old.Michele says it was the couple’s faith that

kept them glued together all these years.That, and the fact that they’d alway count-

ed on each other.“When my dad came back from the war,

he felt so out of touch with normal life, hav-ing lived in a POW camp.“He still gives mymother all the credit for

standing by him and helping him get backinto ‘normal’ society – that’s what madethem so close,” she says.“Even in pouring rain or freezing cold, he

can be seen with an umbrella or walkingstick on his way to visit her.”Their longest time apart since her mother

took ill? “Two days,” Michele says.Peter and Thelma Best on 31 May 1950, theirwedding day.

He is done with gangsterism, drugsandmurder and desperately seeksforgiveness for his part in the de-

cay of communities across the CapeFlats.This was the plea by former Hard Li-

vings gang leader and ex-prisoner Ras-hied Staggie at a church service at theNew Directions Grace Church in Parowon Sunday.Staggie admitted to a fully packed au-

ditorium that he was, to a large extent,guilty of the influx of drugs into theCapeand claimed responsibility for a numberof ordered deaths during his tenure asleader of the Hard Livings.

Drug kingpin“Manydecisions frommyself as leader

– it’s because ofme thatmany peoplewe-re killed,” he said.“It was because of my decisions that

so much hurt came over people and intotheir homes. I amalso the cause of soma-ny drugs being pumped into the Cape.”Staggie showed a soft side when he di-

rectly apologised to his own family andthe family of his slain twin brother, Ras-haad.Rashaad was set alight and killed by

members of the vigilante group Pagad infront of his Salt River home in 1996.“I am just a man. A man that desires

attention and love and to be accepted,”Staggie told the congregants.“I ask the forgiveness of all the people

who suffered because of the decisions Imade,” he said.Staggie said he had “a relatively solid

understanding of what drugs could do toa community”.“In 2001 I fell into drug abuse. I used

all the kinds of drugs one could use. Ma-ny nights I lay high as I slept over in ho-tels guilty of promiscuity.“The pain in the eyes of my children

when I got homewill hauntme,” he said.“If I knew then what I know now, I

would have wanted to be a different Ras-hied Staggie. I want to work together –with the police and gangsters and usersand sellers, I want to get gangsters toquit their activities,” he said.

Prison programmeStaggie’s testimony was part of a cele-

bratory programme by the church to ho-nour a group of graduates, all reformedprisoners, gangsters, murderers, drugaddicts and criminals.Thegroupall underwent aprogramme

run by Ivan Waldeck of the Western Ca-pe Outreach Community organisation.Waldeck is well-known in church cir-

cles on the Cape Flats for his work withformer prisoners and is a former gang-ster and prisoner himself.Waldeck said this was the first time in

10 years Staggie spoke publicly.Sebastian Petersen, deputy director of

the correctional services department,said programmes such as that run byWaldeck made his job easier.Petersen also declared that the depart-

ment would be signing a memorandumof understandingwith the church, citingthat “any programmes done with inma-tes would be done through this church”.“We will get teams (from the Grace

church) into prisons and working withinmates,” Petersen said.

In ’n klein baksteengeboutjie op die per-seel van die Durbanvillese taxi-staanplekwerk drie vroue voltyds om groepe onop-

geleide, werklose mense te help om metwaardigheid envaardigheid die ekonomie tebetree.

“Onswerkmet omtrent 300mense per jaarwat ons verskillende kursusse bywoon endaar is baie suksesstories,” sê Jane Gelder-man, bestuurder van die Fisantekraal-sen-trum vir ontwikkeling.

Sy sê dié nie-winsgewende organisasie sedrie kursusse is daarop gemik om ’npersoonte help om in geheel te ontwikkel.

“Ons leer mense vaardighede, maar dit is’nholistiese benadering, onsprobeer ookomdie mense emosioneel en spiritueel te ont-wikkel.”

Basiese kursusHoewel die sentrum Christelik-gefun-

deerd is, is enigiemand welkom om vir hulpte kom aanklop, sê Gelderman.

Die mees basiese kursus is ’n werkgereed-heidsprogram van drie weke, wat op temasfokus soos lewensvaardighede, verhoudingsen basiese begrotings – “dinge wat jou lewekan verbeter”, sê sy.

Die program behels verder ’n kleinhandel-vaardigheidskursus, gemik op kliëntediens,basiese wiskunde, basiese rekenaarwerk enverkoopspunt-tegnieke.

Gelderman sê omtrent 90% van die kandi-date vir hierdie kursus is glad nie rekenaar-geletterd nie.

“Ons leer hulle hoe om ’n Facebook-profielte maak, hul CV saam te stel en aan die eindevan die kursus doen hulle dan indiensoplei-ding vir drie dae by ondernemings in die om-gewing wat ons goedgesind is,” sê sy. Hierdiegeleenthede lei dikwels tot indiensneming.

Die tweede kursus is ’n kantooradministra-sieprogramvan tienweke, watmeer intensie-we rekenaaropleiding en kommunikasie-vaardighede insluit.

“Ons is geleidelik besig om ’n netwerk opte bou van ondernemings waar ons hierdiekandidate kan plaas,” sê Gelderman. Die sen-trum semees suksesvolle kursus is die “Bakefor profit”-entrepreneursprogram, ’n praktie-se kursus wat hoofsaaklik vroue leer om huleie bakonderneming op die been te bring.

“Aan die einde van hierdie program is na-genoeg 90% van die studente in staat om huleie ondernemings te begin. En dit is meestalmense wat vantevore nie kos in die huis ge-had het nie, en nou in staat is om hul kindersse skoolgelde te betaal,” vertel sy.

is vanjaar een van TygerBurger se WantOns Kan-konsertbegunstigdes.

Hieroor is Gelderman baie opgewonde.“Ons gaan met die geld uit dié konsert,

’n Frail Care-kursus begin. Ons het klaardie studiemateriaal aangekoop.

“Nou moet ons nog net ’n plek kry omdie opleiding te doen en ’n gekwalifiseerdeverpleegster aanstel om die opleiding tedoen. Ons hoop om hiermee in Augustuste begin,” sê sy.

Meer menseDie sentrum besit grond in Fisantekraal

en Gelderman sê daar gaan binnekort ’ngebou opgerig word om sodoende meermense te kan akkommodeer vir opleidingen ook om meer uiteenlopende praktiesekursusse te kan aanbied.

“Ons wil graag in daardie gemeenskapgevestig raak en ons gebou sal hopelik ookas ’n gemeenskapsentrum dien. Op die

oomblik word ons aktiwiteite beperk deurdie min ruimte wat ons hier het,” sê sy.

Die sentrum is al vir vyf jaar aktief, maarGelderman sê verbasend min mense is be-wus van hulle.

“Ons het altyd nog vrywilligers nodig enbefondsing bly maar ’n tameletjie, maar diekerke in die omgewing help ons baie,” sê sy.

“Ons bedien veral diewerklose jeug enhetna skole in gemeenskappe gegaanwaar daarnie geld is vir verdere opleiding nie.

“Baie van ons kandidate kom van daar af.Ons werk hoofsaaklik met die ouderdoms-groep 18 tot 35.

Traffic came to a halt early on Saturdayafter a truck driver lost control of hisvehicle while going down the hill near

Plattekloof on the N1 inbound.Richard Coleman, a Traffic Services

spokesperson, said the driver was headingdown the hill at about 06:00 on Saturdaymorning when the truck started skidding.“The driver lost control and went into a

lamp pole. The truck then caught alight.Two other vehicles went into the truck,” hesaid.“We had to close down the roadway. Traf-

fic was diverted into Plattekloof and fromPlattekloof into Cape Town,” he said.Coleman confirmed that two people were

slightly injured.Their main concern was the diesel that

caught alight and seemed to have been thecause of the accident, he said.“The diesel didn’t come from the truck.

It was apparently already on the road sur-face and as the truck went downhill, it star-ted skidding.“This is why we had to close the highway

for an extended period. Because of the rain,the chemicals used to put out diesel fires ta-ke longer to activate on the roadway .”Thehighwaywas reopenedat about 13:30.An ER24 statement released early on Sa-

turday reported six motor vehicle acci-dents in the Cape Town area since Fridaynight, over a period of less than sevenhours.Ten people were left injured during the

course of the night, according to the state-ment.“The first two collisions happened ap-

proximately ten metres from one another,about two hours apart. In the first collision,five people were left with injuries rangingfrom minor to moderate.”Patients were taken to Tygerberg and

Groote Schuur hospitals for further treat-ment, stated ER24.

Baie van die arias kom uit operaswat ek reeds vertolk het en dit is vir my’n besonderse ervaring om nou, 12 jaar na-dat ek die eerste keer as Mimi in Puccinise La Boheme op Kunstekaap se operaver-hoog gestaan het, die arias weer te vertolken te hoor hoe dit oor die afgelope dekadeontwikkel het.

“Ek is en bly inmydiepstewese ’n opera-sanger en hierdie is diemusiek watmy diemeeste ontroer. Om dit met mense te deelis vir my ’n noodsaaklikheid en gee vir myonbeskryflik baie vreugde,” vertel Zanne.

Die idee van Tea with Puccini het ont-staan ná sy ’n uitvoering in Plettenberg-baai gegee het by die Ouland Royale.

“Die konsertwas op ’n Sondagmiddag enis aangebied in die vorm van ’n high tea.Die program bestaan hoofsaaklik uit wer-ke van die Italiaanse komponis GiacomoPuccini – my gunsteling van al die opera-komponiste.

“Omdat ’n mens nie ’n teeparty kan housonder gaste nie, is daar ookwerke vanmyander geliefdes soos Mozart, Bellini en Of-fenbach,” verduidelik Zanne.

Sy beskryf haarself as die “gasvrou” vandié tee, “met Puccini die eregas en die an-der menere ons goeie vriende. Alle party-tjies kort egter ’n paar jonger gaste om diegesprek lewendig te hou en daarom het ek,ommee af te sluit, onder meer werke inge-sluit van Leonard Bernstein uit West SideStory en Harold Arlen uit The Wizard ofOz.

Wat diedag egter ekstra spesiaal gemaak het, verteldie skoolhoof, LJ Rutter, wat dat die SBAspesiaal ’n tolk gekry het om die stuk in ge-baretaal aan die leerders oor te dra.“Die leerders het ’n wonderlike ondervin-

ding gehad om ’n dramamet so baie bekendeakteurs en aktrises te sien.

“Hul dag was gemaak toe hulle van die ka-rakters (van die gewilde Afrikaanse sepie7de Laan) gesien het. Die skool se onderwy-sers kon identifiseer met die storielyn en er-varings, wat die skrywer uitgedruk het inhaar kragtige woorde,” het Rutter gesê.Die leerders was aangenaam verras deur

terrein buite Grabouw bygewoon.Dié kamp is van 22 tot 24 Mei deur die

Landsdiensbeweging se studente- en jongwerkende lede, onder leiding van Antonievan Schalkwyk, bygewoon.

Verskeie laerskole se grade 5 tot 7 – met’n totaal van 49 leerders – het hierdie kamp

bygewoon.Dié skole het ingesluit die laerskole Bell-

ville-Noord, Brackenfell, De Tyger, Good-woodpark en Worcester-Oos.

Corné Lotter van Bellville-Noord vertelsó: “Die groep lewendige jongmense het dielaerskoollede en meegaande onderwysersmet allerlei katoeters aan die gang gehou enniemand het enigsins omgegee dat die weermaar aan die triestige kant was nie.”

Hy sê nie eens beurtkrag kon die groepvan stryk bring nie.

Daar is eenvoudig met flitse en kopliggiesvoortgegaan met die handwerkaktiwiteit, sêCorné.

Eversdal Primary’s learners excel

Die Laerskool Eversdal het op 27Mei weer sy jaarlikse Evervaria­ta­lentkompetisie aangebied. Tydensdié geleentheid kry die Evers kansom hul onderskeie talente te komwys. Die leerders kon aan verskillen­de kategorieë deelneem soos sang,dans en drama. Mieke Pheiffer(links) en Liam Trollip (middel) istwee van die geesdriftige Evers watdeurgedring het na die eindrondeen toe tydens die gala­aandopgetree het. Liam se sussie, Mia(regs), het haar in die gees van dieaand kom ondersteun.

Hierdie leerders het almal in die eindronde van die Evervaria­talentkompetisie deelgeneem en was uiteindelik die kategoriewenners. Hulle is (agtervan links) Hein Roelofse, Kyla Mouton, Grethe Moggee, Jaime Fowler, Marika van Heerden (beoordelaar), Pieter Nel (beoordelaar) en LienkaSerfontein (beoordelaar). Die leerders van die Laerskool Eversdal is tans besig om voor teberei vir die tweejaarlikse akademiese olimpiade wat vroeg involgende kwartaal geskryf word. Die Durbanville-musiekgroep Zandkloofis op ’n missie om “ongekende klankein Afrikaans na jou ore te bring”.

Die duo wat onder die na-me Milan Joan en Die Wolfmusiek maak, is sterk oppad om bekendheid te ver-werf. Liedjies van hul de-buut-kortalbum, Brandendvir jou hitte, is reeds op BokRadio en Bay FM te hoor.

Milan is Zandkloof sestem, terwyl Die Wolf dieskrywer en komponis is.

“Dis nie soos Afrikaansemusiek nie,” vertel Milan.

“Maar tog is die woordeAfrikaans.”

Anders as baie kommer-siële Afrikaanse musiek, issuiwer taalgebruik baie be-langrik vir Die Wolf, en ’nmens sal nooit woorde soosbaby inhul liedjies hoornie.

Threatened by the enemy within,and thanks to the revenge of the jiltedhard-of-hearing nursery maid, theband of pirates discover a means to savetheir sticky end and in so doing put poorFrederick in a rather delicate position.

Riding alive from Cape to Knysna

A new awareness campaign is being launched for greater awareness on the safety of cyclists.

The Pedal Power Association has part-nered with the Cape 2 Knysna CycleTour (28 June – 3 July) to raise aware-

ness of cyclists on our roads that will keepcyclists safe on our roads.Participants of the tour will ride in Stay

Wider of the Rider cycling jerseys whichsend out a message to motorists – give usspace.The PPA’s primary role is to protect and

empower cyclists. The new “Stay Wider oftheRider” campaign launched inFebruaryahead of the cycle tour aims to createmaxi-mum awareness among all road users, spe-cifically motorists, which will hopefullylead to safer roads for cyclists.Thousands of people have pledged their

support for the safe cycling campaign byriding in a “Stay Wider of the Rider” jer-sey.“Visibility is a key issue that contributes

towards cycling accidents on our roads.The new ‘ Stay Wider of the Rider’ safe cy-cling jerseys are highly visible and includethe simple ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ mes-sage,” explains Steve Hayward chairmanof the Pedal Power Association. “Ridersparticipating will be visible from faraway.”The Cape Town 2 Knysna Tour will re-

RACING: UNIQUE RACE DAY BILLED AT KILLARNEY HAS PETROL HEADS FROTHING

Action­packed racing is due to thrill spectators at Killarney during the Carnival Race Day onSaturday.

With Saturday’s unique Carnival Ra-ce Day offering more top flight va-riety than has ever been experien-

ced at Killarney, there is tremendous exci-tement among petrol-heads of all ages.

The on-track action includes the Caperound of the All-Africa 3-Hour EnduranceRace Series due to finish after dark, a legof the South African Superkart Champi-onship and round four of the Power Seriesfor cars and motorcycles, sponsored byWingfield Motors.

A parade of VW Beetles in honour of themarques’ 80th anniversary (the prototypePeople’s Car was unveiled in Germany inmid 1935), will take place during the lunchbreak, with the lucky winners of highspeed laps in a racing sports Porsche com-petition to receive their award shortly af-terwards. There will also be a display ofmotorcycle stunt riding.

Static attractions will be an Exotic andSports Car Show that includes several his-toric motorcycles under cover in the spaci-ous new pit block. The popular Engen F1simulators will be available to budding Le-wis Hamiltons in the same building. Outs-ide, a multifaceted fun fair and amusementpark will offer entertainment of a differentnature in the adjacent parking area.

American muscleWhile entries for the 3-Hour Race include

six Porsches, all with two or even threedrivers, the battle up front is more likelyto be fought between a trio of Junos, a Dod-ge Viper and possibly a Panoz Esperante.

The formidable Juno attack is being ledby Western Cape champion Francis Carru-thers, with co-drivers Nick Adcock and De-an McCarroll in an SS3 V6. They will haveto face Craig Jarvis and Marcel Angel inJarvis’s recently acquired brutal V10, 8.4litre Dodge Viper, and an American-sour-ced V8 Panoz Esperante shared by Dave Al-hadeff, Jonathan Bernstein and Chris Ca-rolin.

spectacle of the Superkart races where thedrivers’ backside is a few inches off theground, in these tiny projectiles with no sus-pension and wheels the size of chocolate coa-ted doughnuts. However, they are poweredby 250cc motors with six speed sequentialgearboxes and can hit over 200 km/h on theback straight and lap quicker than the migh-ty Wesbank V8’s of a couple of years ago.

The perennially hard-fought Bold MarineGTi Challenge racing is expected to be oneof the highlights of the programme. YoungMarco Busi and Christopher Swart swappedplaces at the head of the field last month andthey should be the ones to watch.

While 15-year-old Joshua Dolinschek willseek to repeat his recent single seater For-mula Libre victory, the battle in the MutluBatteries Classic Cars and the Cars Unlimi-ted Fine Car events, which includes DaveRowley’s rare, modified VW Beetle, is expec-ted to be much closer.

With the first race to start at 10.00am, theAfrican 3-Hour is the final event and is toget under way at 4.15pm. Admission is R60for adults and R20 for scholars under 16.There is no charge for kids under 12. Ticketsare also available from Computicket.
