Francois Phillip van Zyl felt the community

needed to take action. Well, we need to start

fighting back... That is going to be the only

    way.

These were just some of the hundreds of

comments posted as the story published on

    the TygerBurger website started spreading

    on Monday.

In the meantime, police have had no luck

    making any arrests.

    Provincial police spokesperson Captain

Frederick van Wyk said the (getaway) vehi-

cle was later spotted in Nyanga by members

    of the police.

The suspects tried to evade the police and

they shot at police members and a chase en-

    sued, said Van Wyk.

He said the car stopped at the corner of

New Eisleben and Klipfontein Roads where

the suspects jumped out and fled on foot.

Some of the stolen items and cash were

recovered. It was found that the Golf was hi-

jacked inMitchells Plain on Friday 6 Febru-

    ary.

He asked the publics help to find the per-

    petrators.

    Police are investigatingabusiness robbe-

ry, attempted murder and hijacking cases

and request anyone with information that

could lead to the arrest of the suspects to ple-

ase contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

    Dan Plato, provincial community safety

minister, said the only way to get rid of the

scourge of business robberies, was to invest

    heavily in additional security measures.

    Weare veryworried about the increasing

    number of robberies at centres.

This shows a great measure of desperati-

on from the syndicates to lay their hands on

money no one is excluded from their greed.

Added security measure will come at a

great cost, but this is the price we will have

to pay to get rid of this scourge. It is in every-

    ones best interest, Plato said.

    D

aar is nou 151 minder mense op straat

sedert die Stad Kaapstad se depart-

    ment van maatskaplike ontwikkeling

    en vroe kinderontwikkeling se straatmen-

se-program verlede jaar ingegryp het om

straatmense van die straat af te kry.

Gedurende die laaste kwartaal van 2014

het personeel van die department wat aan

die program verbonde is, 90 mense na skui-

lings of assesseringsentrums verwys, 32 is

    bygestaan met gesondheidsorg en ander

maatskaplike dienste en 29mense ismet hul

    gesinne herenig.

    Eenvandimense is n 62-jarigeman, oor-

spronklik van die Oos-Kaap, wat langs die

R300-deurpad gebly het. Die man is in Okto-

werkers ontdek. Hy het sewe jaar op straat

    gewoon.

N die man se omstandighede ondersoek

is, is hy in die Beaconvale-gemeenskapsver-

    sorgingsentrum in Mitchells Plain opge-

neem.

    vroe kinderontwikkeling.

    spoor.

    Amotorcyclist (52) was eventually arrested

after he tried to avoid traffic officers on

Thursday by speeding off from road blocks

    in the Bellville/Stikland area.

The biker, who was later found to be in-

ebriated, racked up a whole list of charges

after he refused to stop during joint operati-

ons between traffic services andMetro Poli-

    ce, a City statement said.

The motorcyclist refused to stop when

ordered to do so bymembers of traffic servi-

ces Ghost Squad, who noticed that his num-

    ber platewas coveredwith insulation tape,

    the statement said.

As if speeding away with a taped-over

number plate wasnt enough, the driver col-

lided with one of the traffic vehicles after

    being chased for 15 minutes.

This finally brought the biker to a stop.

He was found to be twice over the legal

blood-alcohol limit and was arrested for

    drunk driving, reckless and negligent

driving, defeating the ends of justice, failing

to stop, resisting arrest and malicious da-

    mage to property.

It also emerged that the suspect, from

Bellville, is an unlicensed driver, the state-

    ment said.

Others who were arrested over the wee-

kend, included those in Eerste River and

    Bellville South, during operations focusing

    on illegal drag-racing.

According to the statement, ...officers ar-

rested two motorists: one for reckless and

negligent driving and another for drunk

driving. The drunk driver was found with

a glass in hand and claimed it was cool-

drink, but officers soon established that it

was alcohol and, when testing the motorist,

they found that he was three times over the

    legal blood-alcohol limit.

Traffic services arrested 42 more moto-

rists on charges of drunk driving at various

    roadblocks, including one in Kraaifontein.

histeries. Di mense is al voorheen daar ge-

sien terwyl hulle met kinders gesels, of by

of di groep verantwoordelik was vir die

steel is nie.

    Kapt.

    tig.

ith two decades of hits under their

belts, Dr Victor and the Rasta Re-

    bels have become synonymous

    with feel-good music.

Thats exactly what fans can expect when

the band take to the stage at the Liqui-Fruit

Amphitheatre in Paarl for Local is Lekker

    2015.

The band is one of three acts that Cape

Town audiences chose to perform at the

show, the only one in the countrywhere the

    public decide the line-up.

Band frontman Dr Victor says hes loo-

king forward to the outdoor show on Satur-

    day 21 March.

I like open-air concerts because everyt-

hing is bigger: bigger dance moves, bigger

applause and a huge sound system to play

    through.

Dr Vic, as he is also known, says the band

is planning to play some of the hits that ma-

de them a household name in South Africa.

Most of the songs Ive had the opportuni-

ty to sing on are crossover songs and they

appeal to all races and the whole family,

the I love to Truck singer says. Hes also

achieved success with songs such as Eddy

Grants Give Me Hope Joanna that were al-

readyhits in the 60s and 70s before theRas-

ta Rebels recorded their own versions.

I believe a good song will always be a

    good song, he says.

Dr Victors musical career has seen him

share the stagewith international stars like

Gloria Estefan and Janet Jackson, but says

two of the biggest highlights of his career

are meeting Paul Simon in 1995 and Tina

    Turner in 1996.

He is also involved with local talent

though and even co-wrote and produced the

popular You Touch Me (Horny) album by

Dawnay. The title track off the album spent

a record-breaking 22 weeks at the top of lo-

    cal charts in 2001.

Dr Victor is currently working with the

artist known as Ricardo, whose single I love

you Daddy was a huge hit in the 80s.

The brother needs my help and Im just

reaching out to him as a friend, he says.

Dr Victor also hopes to finish his smooth

jazz guitar project and his long overdue

    Christmas album this year.

For now though, fans can look forward to

seeing him with the Rasta Rebels at Local

is Lekker 2015 where theyll be sharing the

stage with Theuns Jordaan and Garth Tay-

    lor.

The show is being presented by Tyger-

Burger, Smile 90.4fm and CapeGate Shop-

    pingCentrewho gave readers, listeners and

shoppers the chance to nominate and then

vote for their favourite local acts last year,

thereby giving them the chance to choose

their own line up for the annual concert.

Dr Victor says he likes the idea of audien-

ces choosing performers. It would really

    stretch our creativity as musicians.

Iwould like to thank all the fans for their

continued support over the years and

thanks for voting forme to perform at Local

isLekker 2015. Im looking forward toagreat

    gig, he concludes.

Visit the Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels

Facebook page or follow Dr Vic on Twitter

at @drvictorlive to stay up to date with his

    activities.

V Tickets for Local is Lekker 2015, which takes place

    ful convictions.

An60 000 increase inpolice officers since

2001, resulted in a 54% growth in arrests,

but due to the poor quality of the investiga-

tions done on the dockets a 20% decline in

successful convictions was indicated by the

    NPA during the same time

    he said.

    And whats worse, accord-

ing to Burger, is the fact that

    this gap is growing.

    Although the National De-

    velopmentPlan (NDP)during

    2012 already approved plans

    to professionalise the police

    and bring back specialised

    crime units, Burger ex-

    pressedhis concern about the

    actual implementation of

    these plans.

    Dissolving specialised

    units such as South African

    Narcotics Bureau (SANAB)

    and Murder and Robbery re-

sulted in the loss of special-

    ised investigative capacity

    within SAPS.

    This is because investiga-

    tors of specialised units be-

    come experts in identifying, understanding

and solving specific crime types. A profes-

sional ethos develops within such units

whereby officers can share lessons and ex-

periences, and approach each other for ad-

vice, he said in a recent paper.

Burger found that by dispersing special-

ist personnel across a large number of po-

    lice stations -whichhappenedwhen the spe-

cialised units were dissolved - the benefits

    of specialisation disappeared

    Many experienced detectives lost their

    networks and their expertisewent unused.

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

A big part of the problem the police have

in successfully combating crime is the ina-

    bility to generate crime intelligence.

This is the view of Dr Johan

Burger put forward at a dis-

cussion at the School of Public

    Leadership of the University

    of Stellenbosch in Bellville

    last Wednesday. Burger is a

    senior researcher at the Insti-

    tute for Security Studies (ISS)

and Unisa Professor in the de-

    partment of Police Practice.

    The intense discussion on

    justice, safety and security in

    South Africa was facilitated

    by the Centre for Constitu-

    tional Rights.

    According to Burger, the

    South African Police Ser-

    vices crime intelligence per-

    formance has declined tomin-

    uscule figures over the last

    three years, making it almost

    impossible to combat orga-

    nised crime syndicates over-

    running the country.

He referred to the exponential increase of

142 % in armed robberies in shopping cen-

    tres over the last year.

I am extremely worried about this in-

crease and part of the problem lies with the

    police, he said.

It is because of the lack of SAPS perform-

ance in the domain of crime intelligence,

that crime syndicates such as the ones be-

hindmanymall robberies are having a field

    day, he said.

Another worry is the decline in success-

    Dr Johan Burger during a

    local discussion at SPL in

    Bellville last week. PHOTO:

    @linnertmb

Welgemoed has seen a marked decrease in

crime after the installation of their Licence

    Plate Recognition (LPR) camera system.

At the release of theWelgemoedSafe com-

    munitywatch 2014 crimereport onMonday,

vice-chairperson Anita Vos said the results

    were surprisingly positive.

Vos said after the second phase of the pro-

ject was implemented in July last year and

the cameras have been instrumental in a

    large number of arrests.

Despite the fact that the LPR Camera sy-

stemwas fully implemented for only the se-

cond half of 2014, crime incident statistics

clearly show the upward trend in crime

Welgemoed experienced since 2010 was re-

versed and crime levels were reduced.

Vos said 17 arrests were made in 2014,

compared to the one or two per year made

    previously.

Vos said the statistics showed fewer hou-

ses were broken into, with housebreak and

theft cases becoming incidents of attemp-

    ted housebreakings.

Most of their data was captured during

the second half of 2014 and some into 2015,

providing us with a good sample size of in-

formation to identify trends and activity.

Vos said 11 different categories of datawe-

    re identified.

She said 28 cases of vehicles and 33 sus-

pect pedestrians were intercepted by the

patrol officers and escorted out the area

    over the period.

As the LPR system received pop-ups of

suspicious vehicles from elsewhere in Cape

Town entering Welgemoed from the inter-

linked LPR network, in 21 cases they were

able to pick up and intercept suspect vehi-

cles and chase them out of the suburb.

She said from footage supplied to the poli-

ce, 15 cases of identification could be made.

We were able to reverse the trend of in-

creasing crime by reducing incidents. This

while most of our neighbouring areas had

    an increase in crime.

Arrests are up, so it is getting less attrac-

tive to steal in Welgemoed, Vos said.

She urged residents to join the initiative

at their next public meeting and AGM on

    Thursday 12 March 2015, from 18:30 to 20:00

at the Dutch Reformed Church hall in Dias

    Street.

She said they would be reviewing 2014,

discussing the crime statistics in more de-

tail and sharing the organisations future

    plans for a safer Welgemoed.

    Huis Aristea in Durbanville blom

    Oorhoehulle presies ontmoethet, ishulle

dit glad nie eens nie. Oom Sol, n afgetrede

operasie in Maart verlede jaar n geleent-

Toe ek sien, toe staan hierdie man inmy

kamerdeur. Di geselsie het toe in n lang

    kuier ontaard, vertel sy skalks.

Dit was hierdie man wat my na die ope-

rasie rondgery en met alles gehelp het.

OomSol se vrou,Wina, metwie hy 58 jaar

getroud was, is op 23 Januarie verlede haar

oorlede. Hulle het reeds sewe jaar by Aris-

jarige leeftyd. Pool, wat opgelei is as maat-

skaplike werker, het daarna by haar dogter

op Riversdal gaan bly. Toe haar dogter in

Junie 2012 oorlede is, het sy in n kamer by

ken veral vroue, s die Bellville-polisie.

Kapt. Fienie Nimb s daar is baie maniere

sitplek l. Hulle breek dan die venster

oop.

    sluit.

My ore wil nie aldag meer baie

    geraas geniet nie. Beide hierdie

    skulpdier-ornamente aan die

    kante van my haarlose koppie

    kom derhalwe kort-kort in

    opstand.

Gelukkig is die stilte van my

    kantoor n ontsnappingsden,

    waar hulle saam met my

    gemoed, die onstuimige gewoel

    van die onder-Kaap kan systap

en dan soms na niks hoef te

    luister nie.

Ons almal ken die manne in

    die klein voorstedelike karre-

tjies met die bre tekkies, die

    formule een-en-n-driekwart-ag-

    teroorhang-sitplekke en die

    bestuurder met die agterste-

    voor-kepsie en goue kettings...

    en die klankstelsel.

    Die karretjie se deurpanele is

versterk om seker te maak dat

    die swaar luidsprekers nie die

    die hip-hop-doef-daf-bas-klanke

    die osoonlaag ingeslinger word

    Soos iemand onder in die

die geraas (let wel dit kwalifi-

    aankom, dan maak die ander

motors pad; amper soos vir die

    Hoekom is dit net manlike

    bestuurders wat dit so uiters

nodig ag om sy gebrek aan

    musieksmaak en respek vir

ander mense se ore aan die

strate van die dorp bloot te

    Die meisies/vroue doen dit

    phoning your domestic ser-

    their employers names and

    telephone numbers.

    They then phone you and

    pose as your domestic workers

relatives and tell you she has

    died and they need financial

    assistance.

    They are quite convincing as

a woman who said she was my

    maids daughter was actually

    phone. Another thing that has

    been happening is young

    women going door to door

    A few days ago I used a

disabled parking bay in front of

    the Edgemead shopping centre.

I have used this facility for

many years as it is convenient-

ly situated in front of the ATM

and it is always easy for my

wife to find a shopping trolly I

use as a walking aid. On this

    specific day, after climbing on

top of the curbstones with my

two crutches to walk to the

    ATM, I was left dumbfounded

    by a very healthy person

    pushing a pram who confronted

me to tell me I was parking

    illegally. When I returned to

my car I noticed a message

painted in white on the tarred

    service reading moms and

    tots. While standing, still

upset, it occured to me that at

the front of the centre there

    were now parking bays alloca-

ted further away from where I

was parked. I noticed an open

    bay about five vehicles away.

Ideal for winter rainy days. The

    new arrangements prompts me

    to ask the following questions:

Are there bike riders who are

    handicapped? Do moms and

tots fall within the category of

    handicapped and disabled? Do

    the architcts of these projects

    know the meaning of physically

    Suid-Afrikaners is lankal misdaadvoos.

Huisinbrake is al n geruime tyd lank ons

    voorland.

Daarom beveilig ons onsself met ho

    mure, veiligheidshekke, alarmstelsels en

kwaai honde. Buurtwagte dien as byko-

    drasties toegeneem.

    Oral in die verspreidingsgebied van

TygerBurger lees n mens daagliks van

winkels in sentrums wat beroof word

van n restaurant in die Tygervalleisen-

trum tot by n Milnertonse winkel wat

    huishoudelike toerusting verkoop.

    Apteke, selfoonwinkels en vulstasies loop

deur. En dit neem daagliks toe.

    Die meeste sentrums se sekerheidsper-

soneel is nie regtig opgelei om gewapende

rooftogte hok te slaan nie. Die publiek is

deurentyd blootgestel daaraan. En dit is

immers elke landsburger se basiese reg

om beskerm te word as hy of sy n

    openbare plek besoek.

Dit bring mee dat hierdie situasie n

n prioriteitsaak vir die polisie mt

word. Spesiale eenhede wat op sentrum-

    misdaad fokus, is n noodsaaklikheid.

    R

eaders may have lost a loved one to

cancer, or know someone fighting it.

But how much do readers know about

    the illness?

Elize Joubert, Cansas acting CEO, states

over 100 000 South Africans are diagnosed

    annually with the disease.

World Cancer Day was on 4 February and

this is Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month.

According to research conducted by Can-

sas head of health, Professor Michael

Herbst, scientific evidence shows diet and

exercise can play a vital role in lowering

    cancer risk.

Tobacco use, obesity, a poor diet, lack of

physical activity and alcohol contribute to

    cancer risk. Infections and environmental

    pollutants also contribute to cancer.

    According toCansa the followingare some

of the warning signs for the illness:

V Change in a wart or mole.

    V Any continued fever.

    V Nagging coughor continuedhoarseness.

V Chronic pain in bones or any other area.

V Enduring fatigue, nausea or vomiting.

    V Repeated infection and/or inflammati-

    on.

V Change in bowel or bladder habits.

V A sore throat that does not heal.

V Unusual discharge or abnormal blee-

    ding.

V Thickening or lump in the breast, testi-

    cles or elsewhere.

    V Indigestion or difficulty swallowing.

V Obvious change in the size, colour, sha-

pe or thickness of a wart, mole or mouth so-

    re.

V Noticeable weight loss and appetite loss.

These symptoms may be caused by other

health problems, but if one or more of these

symptomspersist, a doctor should be consul-

    ted immediately.

    According to cancer awareness organisa-

    tions PinkDrive, Campaigning for Cancer

and More Balls Than Most, some myths and

    facts about cancer include:

Myth If you find a lump while breastfee-

    ding it cant be cancer.

Fact Breastfeeding is proven to reduce

a womans lifetime risk of being diagnosed

with breast cancer but it can still happen.

VMyth Cancer is contagious and can

    spread like flu.

    Fact Cancer is not contagious.

    VMyth Childhood cancer is fatal.

Fact Most childhood cancers are curable.

VMyth Testicular cancer is an old per-

    sons disease.

Fact It is the most common cancer affec-

ting men between the ages of 18 to 39.

VMyth If you are young, a breast lump

    cant be cancer.

Fact You should get breast lumps chec-

ked out by a doctor at any age.

VMyth Im too young toworry about cer-

    vical cancer.

Fact Women can be diagnosed with cer-

    vical cancer in their 20s.

    T

    he journey fromplaying ablikgitaar in

    Athlone to playingCarnegieHall start-

ed when Gammie Lakay fell in love

with the sounds that surrounded him in his

    neighbourhood.

If youve been to a David Kramer produc-

tion in the last 25 years youve experienced

the musical magic that happens when he

    gets that guitar groove going.

While working with Kramer and the late

Taliep Petersen in their productions tour-

ing the world has been a dream come true,

    its a journey still continuing.

In December last year he was part of the

band that went to Carnegie Hall in New

York and said when he stepped onto that

stage he thought back to his roots.

Iwas very emotional, he says. Was this

laaitie who learnt his music on the streets

    really standing on this stage?

As I plugged in for the sound check and

the first notes of my guitar rang out I knew

it was not a dream - my passion for music

    had paid off.

    Surrounded by music

Gammie points out that growing up in 7th

Avenue in Athlone you could not help hav-

    ing music influence you.

This is the same road as the famous But-

    ler family, he says.

Music came to you from the corners

where guys were singing, the langarm

bands, the Christmas Choirs and of course

the Minstrels. When I first heard the sound

of the guitar with the choirs I knew that I

    wanted to play.

There was nomoney for an instrument at

that time so some ingenuity saw him mak-

ing his own guitar from a tin can.

I just had to play something, he laughs.

There were no formal lessons so I just

watched. My guitar may not have been in

tune but my fingers were making the right

moves and in my head I was a star.

Eventually he got a real guitar for his 13th

birthday and he started taking his music

more seriously, learning from those around

him and getting involved with the min-

    strels.

My music school was the streets, the ra-

    dio and gramophone. Therewas alwaysmu-

sic around me and I wanted to play every-

thing from the Beatles to Jimi Hendrix.

Eventually hewas invited to join the band

    Harold and the Hippies.

We were very popular on the local

    scene, he remembers.

Richard John Smith was also part of the

band at the time and we had a bit of a hit

with the song Storybook Children, but the

radio would not play it because hippies

were supposed to be bad,he laughs.

Since then he has played with many

bandsbut it is the relationshipwith themin-

strels that eventually got him joining the

    Kramer/Petersen family.

    Regular gigs

I always knew Taliep (Petersen) from

working with the minstrels and he always

loved my playing. For years he would tell

me that hewanted toworkwithme but both

of us were always busy with other projects.

    Eventually Howard Links (bass player

    forKramer/Petersen) rockedupatmyplace

and just said kom, Taliep soek vir jou

(come, Taliep is looking for you).

Since then David has not stopped using

us as his backing band and for recordings.

Weve built up a good relationship, adding

that real Cape flavour to his music.

A particularly proud moment was when

David included my tune Ons Jol Innie Hei-

develd for the concert in Carnegie hall.

Of course we eventually sangOns Jol In-

nie Carnegie Hall and watching the people

get up and dance made me realise how

proud I was to be working with the best in

    the South African music industry.

The musical journey is far from over for

Gammie there is still a lot that he is doing

    and wants to do.

Recording is high on that list of getting

his original material on an album, he wants

to teach more and still loves gigging when

not working on a Kramer production.

He has formed a group Fantacy with sing-

er Vincent Carlindt and they gig at the

Groun Coffee Restaurant (4 Denver Road,

Lansdowne) on Thursdays from 20:00 and

on Saturdays at Cafe Royale (also in Lans-

    downe Road) from 17:00.

I am available for any type of gig, he

    says.

VGammie Lakay can be contacted on083 776 5092.

    COLLEGE

    .

    A

n identity fraudster who had been

causing his victim misery for 16

years, has been busted by City traffic

    officials.

Jafta Williams went to the Parow Traffic

Department a few weeks ago to enquire

about a number of traffic fines and war-

rants issued in his name relating to offen-

    ces he had not committed.

Williams saidhehad lost his identity doc-

ument and drivers licence in Bellville 16

years ago and has been haunted by an iden-

tity thief ever since, facing arrest for out-

standing fines and having to pay for offen-

ces he never committed. Efforts to clear up

the issue, includingwith the South African

Police Service and home affairs, had come

    to nought.

At the traffic department, one of the offi-

cers searched the database and found a

string of offences registered in the Retreat

and Capricorn areas some for a Toyota

minibus and others for a Toyota Tazz. The

discovery led officers Desr Benadie and

Marnus Visser to the Retreat taxi rank the

following day, where they received confir-

mation that the person going by the vic-

tims name was in fact a taxi driver. Once

they tracked him down, he insisted that he

    wasWilliamsandproducedan identitydoc-

    ument to prove it.

The fraudster was so brazen. He actual-

ly tried to convince the officers that he was

in fact Mr Williams. Even when they went

off in search of a Morpho Touch machine

to verify his identity through fingerprint-

ing, he still stuck to his story. Only through

    persistent questioning did he eventually

confess that he had in fact stolen the resi-

dents identity and had used it to make du-

plicate licences and purchase a vehicle, as

he never legally acquired his own driving

licence, said the Citys mayco member for

    safety and security, JP Smith.

The suspect was arrested for fraud and

    has since appeared in court.

These officers went above and beyond

the call of duty and are to be commended

for their efforts. Their search for the truth

led them to Retreat, Capricorn, Hillstar

Traffic Department, the Delft police station

    and Cape Town International Airport.

Identity theft is a problem and judging by

the victims account, very difficult to re-

solve. I am very pleased that he was able

to finally catch a break in a very long battle

and I would like to urge the public to be ex-

tra vigilant and to guard against falling vic-

tim to this type of theft. Also, do not just

take traffic notices at face value and, if

youre unsure, rather go to your nearest

    traffic department to double-check fines.

As illustrated by this case, we will assist

where we can, but ultimately home affairs

doesneed to shapeup todealwith this ongo-

    ing problem, Smith said.

    hree weeks ago Allyson Swanepoel

    from Kraaifontein started knitting

and didnt stop until she had com-

    pleted 40brandnewsets of newbornbaby

    beanies and booties.

And she is not finished yet.

About 500 babies are born at Carl

Bremmer eachmonth, many of whom do

not have proper warm clothing to go ho-

    me in, she says.

She learned of their plight from a nur-

sing sister at the hospital after she read

a pamphlet in a wool shop recently.

It reads as follows: There are a num-

ber of hospitals around the country, in

which babies are being born who have

no warm clothes to wear. In some of the-

se hospitals the babies are evenwrapped

in newspaper and sent home. Many of

them become very ill (pneumonia and

bronchitis) and are even dying of this.

    Great demand

Being a grandmother of 11 grandchil-

dren and a veteran knitter, this tragedy

gripped her heart and she immediately

bought a bag of wool and set off home to

    start the mammoth project.

The nursing sister even provided me

with a pattern for beanies and booties for

premature babies, as this is often a dire

need. The hospital already have a group

of ladies knitting for them, but it is sim-

ply not enough for the demand. Many of

the young mothers who come in for la-

bour are still at school and can hardly ta-

ke care of themselves, says Allyson.

On a table in her living room she

spread out the cute and colourful knitted

    sets.

Fourty down...hundreds to go! But I

cant do it alone. Like me, there must be

    many other community members out

there who loves knitting, have some spa-

re time and would like to join a knitting

    group.

For Allyson this is an opportunity to

    give back to the community.

    Teaching

I absolutely love babies and although

our families need us, there are those in-

nocents out there who need us even mo-

re, she says, adding that she is willing

to teach volunteers how to knit.

Ive knitted all my life and it is a won-

    derfully, relaxing and therapeutic hob-

by. You can sit and knit all day!

    Toon school opens at library

Cartooning classes are being offered at the

    Bellville Library Centre.

Data is the lifeblood of decision-making at all

levels, for individual and international orga-

    nisations.

    Governments, companies, researchers and

citizen groups are in a ferment of experimen-

tation, innovation and adaptation to a world

inwhich data is bigger, faster andmore de-

    tailed than ever before.

This is part of the reason speakers from the

    UnitedNationsUWC lastMonday for a series

of discussions on how to use the worldwide

    data revolution for sustainable development.

We are producing data every second of

our lives, and that all goes somewhere and

some people can use it, and some cant, said

    Professor Enrico Giovannini, chairman of

the UN Secretary Generals Independent Ad-

    visory Expert Group.

The talk was the first step of a Statistics

    South Africa outreach programme exploring

the recently-released A World That Counts

report on the data revolution, andwhat itme-

    ans for sustainable development.

    UWC Rector Professor Tyrone Pretorius

said: With projects like this, there is always

the risk that dominant discourses around the

world will favour the interests of the econo-

    mically powerful.

The powerful may measure what is of in-

terest to them and use that data to find soluti-

ons to the problems they face, leaving the

weak to fend for themselves, he said.

    Pali Lehohla, Secretary-General of Statis-

tics South Africa, said the data revolution

    was particulary important in Africa.

We cant afford to miss out on the data re-
