Die aanvanklike vermoede dat ’n manvan Bellville in Junie gekaap en ver-moor is op die R300-brug in Bracken-

fell, blyk nou nie die geval te wees nie.Die polisie het vandeesweek bevestig dat

hulle in geen stadium oor inligting beskikhet om te bevestig dat Luis de Faria (42) vanBellville op 12 Junie op dieR300-brug gekaapis nie.Kapt. Frederick van Wyk van die polisie

se provinsiale kantoor het gister aan Tyger-Burger gesê dat daar wel ’n selfmoordbriefinDeFaria sevoertuig, ’n silwerOpel Zafira,gevind is. Dié inligting is nie vroeër bekendgemaak nie.

onder die brug gevind, waarna verskeie dag-blaaie in Kaapstad eers berig het dat hy vol-gens onbekende ooggetuies deur ’n vriendgestoot is ná ’n vurige woordewisseling.Later in dieselfde week het nog ’n dagblad

berig dat hy deur tweemans gekaap is en oordie brug gegooi is. Die polisie het dit in daar-die stadium nie bevestig nie.Tweemans is die volgende dag in Kimber-

ley aangekeer in De Faria se voertuig en ge-arresteer vir die besit van gesteelde goedere.Hulle is later deur plaaslike speurders on-

dervra,maarkonvolgensVanWykgeenver-dere lig op die dood van De Faria werp nie.

BevestigDie polisie het verder bevestig dat ’n na-

doodse verslag aangedui het dat De Fariadood is aan veelvoudige kopbeserings.Die mans het later in die Kuilsrivier-land-

droshof verskyn vir die bogenoemde klag-tes. Die polisie vermoed geen verdere mis-daad nie.Volgens Leon Brynard, voorsitter van die

Brackenfell-gemeenskapspolisieforum, isdit gerustellend om te weet dat daar immersnie ’n kaping in Brackenfell plaasgevind hetnie, ondanks die hartseer dood vanDeFaria.Inwoners van die noordelike voorstede wasgeskok oor die moontlikheid van ’n kapingin hul omgewing.“Dit was van die begin af baie vreemd dat

‘kapers’ juis daardie plek op die R300-opritsou kies om ’n motor te kaap,” sê hy.

Bellville crime prevention unit was awarded for their efforts over the past financial year duringthe provincial police awards recently. Bellville police members have reason to beproud, after scooping up three prizes duringthe recent Provincial Prestige Awards.Bellville station commissioner Brig Shar-

onGovender and the finance officewere rec-ognised as runners-up in their respectivecategories, while the crime prevention unit(CPU) obtained a third position.Although Goodwood police station’s com-

mander, Col HansiaAsaramwas named Sta-tion Commissioner of the Year, Bellville po-lice is the number one Brigadier-led stationin the province.At the awards held inPinelands, hosted by

Lt Gen Arno Lamoer, Western Cape provin-cial commissioner, Govender was namedthe runner-up in theWomen’sNetwork cate-gory, while the finance office was also run-ners-up. This award is based on how thecluster is run financially.Bellville’s crime prevention unit obtained

a second place.“We were very humbled that Bellville po-

lice station received three awards,” saidGovender.The awards were made based on perform-

ances during the previous financial year.“Whether we came first or were never

nominated, we are all winners if you look atthe big picture. Everyone from the supportoffices to the detectives is involved and thatis what leads to convictions,” Govendersaid.She said Bellville police made many in-

roads with initiatives at the station.TheThulaThula room, an extension of the

Victim Support Room, that was opened atthe station at the end of last yearwas Goven-der’s initiative. It was the first of its kind tobe opened at a police station.Govender said the provincial office re-

ceived very few queries, if any, over the pastfinancial year.She said during the previous financial

year, Bellville police had to revisit the draw-ing board. “We were challenged by the com-munity. Every time the community putdownanewchallengeonourdesks,wewant-ed to improve our service.Wewere constant-ly looking at how we could do things better.This award didn’t happen by chance,” saidGovender.She said the CPU award is one that stands

out. “These members would not sleep untilthey had achieved what they set out to do,even if that was in the wee hours,” she said.

Knitted beanies and socks were donated tobabies and children at Karl Bremer by theWestern CapeWomen’s Network last week.

This projectwas held in partnershipwithMonique Strydom’s organisation Matla ABana, whose main aim is to minimise thesecondary abuse children suffer when theyreport crimes perpetrated against them.

Policewomen in the province knitted thesocks and beanies that were distributed tothe hospital.

Soon Tygerberg Hospital will receivetheir share of the beanies and socks.

Sister Karlien Fourie, operational man-ager at Karl Bremer Hospital, said themothers of premature babies weighing be-low 1,8 kg at birth serve as incubators. “Thebabies wear only beanies and socks. Theyare held close to the mother’s heart so themother can feel immediately if the baby’sheart rate is not right,” she said.

Ex-gymnasts focus on dance fame

The dancers, Kathleen Welkom, Henrietta de Bruyn, Andrid Dawson, Lydia Armino, LorraineSwanepoel, Miriam Bux, Wilhelmina Michaels, Ivy Orange, Michelle Hoffmeester, Doreen Solomons(coach and manager), Pravin Geysenberg, Anita Davids, Rebecca Paulse and Magdelene Weitz,are ready to compete in the International World Gymfest for Life competition.

Teachers and retired teachers from Rich-wood and Atlantis are dancing their way tofame.

A group of 18 dancers are competing in theofficial World Gymfest for Life event whichlaunches on Thursday, 4 July.

With only a few days left to practise, thisteam of dancers is diligent and focused.

They practise every Saturday at the Rich-wood community hall and see this opportu-nity as a step closer to their dreams.

They have qualified in a provincial South

African Gymnast Federations competitionwhere they won gold in order to participatein the International Gymfest.

Competing in this unique opportunity isa world-class entertaining gymnastics ex-travaganza according to Doreen Solomons,coach of the Richwood team.

International gymnastic groups from 20countries, comprising 1 500 participants,land in on Cape Town to take part in thisgroup gymnastics contest.

Groups, comprising all ages, both gen-ders, able bodied or disabled, will demon-strate their gymnastic flair through artis-

tic, rhythmic, acrobatic, aerobic, aerial andtumbling movements, performing to theirchosen theme, with or without apparatus.

The Richwood team is doing a Spanishdance dressed in white garments without anyapparatus.

Lorraine Swanepoel dances for the teamand has been an active team member since1995 when she competed in the Western Capedance competition.

“I am very excited about the upcoming com-petition. When I dance I transform myself andforget about the world around me. Dancing isa passion of mine,” she says.

One of the youngest members is PravinGeysenberg. At age 24 he enjoys a challengeand sets goals for himself.

“I enjoy what I do and believe that ourgroup will succeed. One of the dances we dois in collaboration with 250 national provin-cial winners where we will be competing fora world title,” he says.

Michelle Hoffmeester is also competing aspart of the team at the International Gymfest

“for all” competition.She used to do ballet at school and is now

a teacher at Bellville Educational College.“I am nervous about the competition, but

I think all the teams are as well. This compe-tition gives the normal person a chance tocompete at a higher level,” saysHoffmeester.

The team feels they would not have com-peted at this level if it was not due to Solo-mon’s coaching.

“She pushed us to new heights and neverasked us a cent in return,” Hofmeester says.

Groups from Richwood, Blackheath, Bel-har, Belvenie, Elsies River, Kuils River,Wesbank, Northpine, and Kraaifontein willcompete for bronze, silver and gold medalsat the Cape Town International ConventionCentre on 12 July.

Having grown up in difficult circum-stances, Benurita’s upbringing played amajor role in the person she is today.

She currently resides in Eerste River andoffers shelter to more than 14 children whoshow up on her doorstep daily.

The youngest is two years old.This has encouraged her to embrace acts

of unselfish love and caring, dipping intoher own cupboards and pocket, ensuringthat each and every hungry stomach getsa meal.

“This is how I grew up, I did not have theluxury back then which I have now,” saidBenurita.

She regularly “adopts” children, with thehelp of the police, providing shelter to chil-dren who have strayed from home.

Many have been exposed to the foul andvile nature of drugs and alcohol.

“It’s a heartbreaking sight to see. I canonly be thankful that my own children arenot exposed to this,” she said.

Her house is in a constant whirlwind ofuntidiness and all of the children addressher as “Mom”.

She recalls fond memories of her grand-daughter, Cleo Phillips (6), constantly ask-ing why she is not allowed to play with chil-dren her grandmother allows in the house.

She is hardly influenced by the negativecomments passed by neighbours and pas-sers-by. Cleo however indulges in the richfriendship and mutual companionship sheshares with her gran.

“Children are my weakness,” she said.

Her family, daughter Claudia and son Lu-an are extremely supportive of the gooddeeds which their mother has carried out.

“They accept it, as it is. Sometimes I lashout at them, but they understand becausethis is how they were taught and broughtup,” she says.

Benurita, a former nurse at a private hos-pital in Durbanville endured a life chang-ing experience in 1994, after an accident lefther with a severe shoulder injury and con-stant limp.

The then 17-year-old said: “As the acci-dent happened, I should have been dead,but it has changed my life for good.”

Benurita is a Personal Assistant at theStellenbosch Universiteit Sentrum vir Ped-agogie (SUNSEP).

Her work colleagues chip in by bringingclothes, food and other necessary itemswhich she hands to the children bloomingon her doorstep.

“I want to give others, that which I didnot have when I was a child. To see the facesof the children, is a big enough ‘thank you’for me,” Benurita said.

She was a finalist in theTygerBurger andRadio Tygerberg, Moeders van die gemeen-skap competition.

Her first initial reaction was: “Not whatI expected. It’s not what I wanted, it’s thefaces of the children which is important,”she said.

She acknowledges the impact which un-employment has on parents in the EersteRiver community.

The STAG Student Lodge company has re-cently completed its very popular andworld-class student accommodationproject, a pioneering green alternative resi-dence at the University of Stellenbosch’sTygerberg Medical Campus.

According to Michelle Groenewald,STAG maintenance manager, given all thepositive feedback she has received so far,the students seem to be very happy with thenew building.

She says the enviromentally conciousbuilding is more spacious, eco-friendly andthe green element has definitely been wel-comed by students.

Groenewald says the only complaints shehas received about the new student accom-modation were about the energy saving in-duction stove, which has no oven for bak-ing.

According to John Schooling, chief exec-utive officer of STAG Student Lodge, stu-dent accommodation needed a fresh ap-proach that puts the student at the centreof the design process.

He says STAG responded effectively tothe growing demand for a more efficientand cost-effective student accommodationsolution and have made some radical prod-uct innovations to the new residence.

“We wanted an optimal architectural de-sign that ensured every square metre of thebuilding was designed specifically for theneeds of the student,” said Schooling.

“So, we placed the student at the centre

of the design process and for everything wedid, we asked the question: ‘How does thisaffect the student?’”

Schooling says, firstly, the design of theresidences needed to better reflect the stu-dents’ living requirements.

Secondly, he says, they decided that tra-ditional brick and mortar constructiontook too long and was too expensive formost universities.

Schooling says he explored a number ofbuilding methods with two things in mind:it needed to cost less and be time effective.

“Historically, the cost of student accom-modation was very expensive. The nationalnorm is around R240 000 per bed. That wasunaffordable.

“So we looked around for a method thatwas not only cheaper than bricks and mor-tar, but better and which we could apply tothe South African context,” says Schooling.

The company found the answer in light-weight steel structure technology that firstemerged in the 1950s, but is now the domi-nant means of construction worldwide.STAG has been using the technology inSouth Africa for more than five years now.

“We design to what we call a ‘rational de-sign code’ and municipal planning depart-ments have no problem with it. The newresidence at the Stellenbosch University’sTygerberg Campus, which hosts the Facul-ty of Medicine and Health Sciences, took 30days to get through council,” says School-ing.

Inspiring tale of Lucky LucyDESIREÉ RORKE

For Richelle Graham, founder of the LuckyLucy Foundation, there is nothing morebeautiful in life than a severely abused andneglected animal miraculously recoveringto trust human beings again.In fact, for the past three years Richelle

alongwith her employees and volunteers atthe foundation have saved or dramaticallychanged the lives of thousands of destituteanimals in and around Cape Town.A commendable reason for this worthy

foundation to be a beneficiary at this year’sTygerBurger “Cause We Can” charity con-cert, which takes place at the Bellville CivicCentre on 28 July.This concert now in its 11th year, will fea-

ture the likes of Juanita duPlessis, AmandaStrydom, Karen Zoid, Albert Frost, KoosKombuis and many more.It all started in 2010 when Richelle found

a dog tied to a railway line. Trains had goneover her, her leg was severed and she waspregnant.She was rushed to the Market Street Ani-

mal Hospital in Paarl where vets did anemergency operation to try stabilise her.Her mangled right front leg was amputatedbut due to the shock and trauma endured,and theanaesthetic andpainmedicationad-ministered, she lost all her puppies.They named her Lucy, and the newly

formed foundation was named in her hon-our. Since then Lucy has gone through ex-tensive rehabilitation at the Lucky LucyAnimal Shelter, where she slowly adjustedto the amputation.Today she is a very important part of the

Lucky Lucy Foundation’s education drive.She takes trips to schools, so that when

her story is told she can help teach aboutjustice, respect and compassion for all life.The Lucky Lucy Foundation is a non-

profit, pro-life, pro-quality of life organisa-tion that tries to relieve the plight of severe-ly neglected and abused township andstreet animals, but also to socially uplift

and educate destitute and impoverishedchildren and people in and around CapeTown.“Lucky Lucy is an ambassador for the

voiceless. We oppose any form of cruelty toany animal, be it kicking a dog to inhumanemethods of slaughter for human consump-tion,” says Richelle.After three years Richelle stays motivat-

ed to see each and every one of the animalsthey rescue find happiness inwhat she callsa “forever home”.She believes the battle against animal

cruelty and overpopulation in the city canbe won.“My deepest wish is that all like-minded

organisations get together and collaboratebecause only through coalition do I havefaith that it can be done.”Funds and monetary support remain her

biggest challenges, as the foundation staresdown ever-growing vet bills, food bills andstaff salaries. Apart from this, they are con-stantly in need of “adoptive parents” fortheir animals.

“Many people have not yet been reachedto be educated on the effects of backyardbreeding and the facts out there. Peopleneed to know that going to any shelter firstbefore findinga furry companionmight justmean changing the life of that rescued ani-mal forever and there is no better feelingthan that,” she says.They currently have over 180 animals on

the foundation’s farm, ranging from dogsand cats to ducks, chickens and pigs.As Richelle and the team at Lucky Lucy

continues their brave work, her message tothe South African public remains strong.“People should join our network of hun-

I personally attended thesubcouncil meeting on Friday21 June where CouncillorLeonore van der Walt present-ed her amended proposal of theplan to the council.

I was humbled by herlengthy presentation whichincluded the devastating effectssuch a policy plan would haveon our neighbourhood.

However, this is not to saythe problem has been totallysolved, it still has to gothrough the process at a higherlevel.

Thank you Leonore forlistening to us and takingaction by opposing the plan.

I would also like to acknowl-edge and thank the BostonRatepayers’ Association, whohave fought tooth and nail onour behalf.

Truda Henning (87) en Annatjie Dijkstra(82) van Bellville, glo om aktief hulle deelte doen om hul gesondheid in stand te housover hul kan.

“Hulle woon die afgelope vier jaar klasseby om hul spierkrag te handhaaf en soepel-heid te bevorder,” sê LizetteOpperman, hulinstruktrise. “Daar is geen keer aan hullevasberadenheid nie. Dikwels moet ek brie-ke aandraai met die nuwe oefeninge wathulle wil probeer,” sê Lizette.

Truda en Annatjie het albei heupvervan-gings gehad, maar laat hulle nie daardeurterughou nie.

Hulle boodskap aan ander bejaardes isom nooit te dink jy is te oud vir iets nie.

“Daar kom dae wat jy swakker voel as an-

der, maar jy druk maar deur en doen watjy kan. Veral as jy dink aan hoe oud jy sougevoel het as jy glad nie geoefen het nie,”sê hulle.

Truda het in 1995 ná ’n heupvervangingbegin oefeninge doen. “Dit is toe vir my solekker dat ek aangehou het,” sê sy.

Annatjie het vir haar vertel van Lizetteen kort voor lank was albei susters deel vandie Pilates-klas.

Lizette sê sedert hulle by haar oefen, hetdie susters geweldig gevorder en vind ver-betering steeds plaas. “Vandag doen hulleoefeninge waarvoor hulle destyds eenvou-dig te bang of te swak was.”

servation and the possible treatment ofwastewater on-site for re-use.

Mashoko said the use of treated effluentfor industrial use was also considered.

Clive Justus, chairperson of Subcouncil4, and Cecile Janse van Rensburg, a wardcouncillor, also attended the breakfastthat was held at the Parow Golf Club. “Wewelcome business expansion in our sub-council and believe that sound economicinvestment will stimulate the growth ofthis area by creating employment and op-portunity,” said Justus.

He reminded those present that the Cityof Cape Town’s application to include se-lected portions of Bellville and Parow intoits Urban Development Zone (UDZ) hadbeen approved by the Minister of Finance,with the validity period for this incentivebeing extended to 31 March 2020.

Keeping an eye on errant taxisThe traffic department has intensified en-forcement approaches at locations close toschools, paying particular attention tomini-buses transporting schoolchildren.As a result, several hundred taxis were

fined and impounded for various offencessince the beginning of the year.This was said by James Vos, De Grendel

Subcouncil chairman, during a recent meet-ing.He said these operations focus on common

violations, such as unroadworthy vehicles,and offences such as reckless or negligentdriving.“The number of offending vehicles is

alarming, considering these vehicles trans-port thousands of people, including chil-

dren, every day,” he said.I believe there needs to be a better regula-

tory framework within the taxi and publictransport industry,” said Vos.The city has a dedicated public transport

unit which investigates all taxi-related com-plaints.This unit is complemented by a taxi ghost

squad teamandmetro police officerswho as-sist with enforcement operations.Vos said officers are vigilant and deter-

mined and will do all they can to keep roadssafe.He said during several operations with

traffic services and law enforcement offic-ers, hehas personally observedmanymotor-ists and minibus drivers wilfully breaking

the law at several locations throughout thewards of his subcouncil.“A no-nonsense approach must be taken.

We are inundated with complaints relatingto the taxi industry, and need to take controlof our streets again by clamping downonun-ruly driving behaviour,” said Vos.He added it was concerning that children

are transported on the back of open vehicles,such as bakkies.“Enforcementwill be tougher and if neces-
