They pretend to be council workershard at work when in actual fact theyare stealing from the council – and re-

sidents.This was the case when Janeen Acker-

mann vanHeerden recently saw suspiciousactivity at an electricity substation in Bos-ton while fetching her son from a playdate.“I was driving past the substation in 13th

Avenue in Bostonwhen I saw oneman insi-de the fencing and one standing on the outs-ide,” Janeen said.“The one on the outside had a wheelbar-

rowandwas continuously accepting a filledspade from the one on the inside,” she said.“I called my husband to check this out,

seeing as it was 18:00 in the evening – whoworks at that time, digging for things?” shesaid.Janeenrealised toher shock that theywe-

re busy “loading gravel from the substati-on” into the wheelbarrow.

Stolen goodsJaneen’s husband went out and followed

thegroupofmen toaprivate residencewhe-re they stopped and tried to sell the gravel.“My husband said they wanted to sell the

gravel for R1500, but he alerted the residentthat it was stolen property. The residentthen wanted nothing further to do with it.”She said her husband went to look for pa-

trolling police and saw a second bakkie.“He counted about 15 men in vests,” shesaid.Her husband told the men to leave the

area, which they did.“I reckon the council should follow this

up. It was their property that was stolen.”District Group security companies ow-

ner Pierre Gouws said his team had seenthis same modus operandus at city parks,which were being stripped bare.“On a regular basis we come across peo-

ple with bakkies, orange lights and reflecti-ve bibs, who look like people working, butarenot. People generally think that it ismu-nicipality workers or subcontractors doing

work,” Pierre said.“On many occasions they are the people

stealing from the community or strippingthe communities and city of its assets.”

Pretending to be officialThe thieves were also known to put oran-

ge cones around park equipment “to makeit look official”.On 3 November, Pierre’s team investiga-

ted a bakkie, with an orange light on itsroof, “making it look like amaintenance ve-hicle” parked in front of a Montague drive-way.He says the occupants were standing

outside the bakkie pretending to be fixingit. When security officers appeared, theysped off. The occupants were followed andpulled over by the security staff in MonteVista Boulevard, with the Goodwood policehot on their heels, Pierre says.Then, in June last year, three suspects

were arrested, also in the Monte Vista, forremoving the swings and frames in thepark at Algoa Crescent, Pierre said.The suspects were tampering with the

swings and told an approaching security of-ficer “they were working for a sub-contrac-tor and they needed to remove the swingsand frames”, Pierre says.The Goodwood police were alerted and

arrested the three.Captain Fienie Nimb, Bellville police

spokesperson, said no charges of damage topublic property, or sale of stolen propertyrelating to the Boston incident had beenlaid at the Bellville police station.

William van Niekerk says he wantsjustice after his young daughter (8)and a friend had a very scary experi-

ence while using the equipment at the CoolRunnings toboggan park in Bellville.The incident happened on Saturday 29No-

vember and Van Niekerk has since soughtlegal counsel, shunning a conciliatory offerby the park after the two children rammedinto a slower moving cart.Van Niekerk cited no serious injury, but

said his family had paid R660 in doctors’ feesand an additional R1100 for X-rays as theythought the extent of the children’s injuriesat the time merited emergency care.

Van Niekerk claims there were no safetymarshals on duty to help the children, whoslammed into the second cart, which wasgoing at a slower speed to their cart arounda sharp bend in the toboggan course.Van Niekerk told Unger: “Did your full in-

vestigation show that the cart ahead wasaround a bend and our children slammed ontheir brakes late – too late for a first timerider of eight years old to have the presenceof mind to use the control correctly?”The park denies any wrongdoing. Frank

Unger, managing director, says after a fullinvestigation he found “the children hadbeen at fault”. He pointed out the childrenshould have reduced their travelling speed.“The second cart was travelling at a faster

speed than the one ahead but since the rider

has full control of the speed, it was in fact(Van Niekerk’s daughter's) responsibility tomaintain a safe gap betweenher and the cartin front.We unfortunately cannot accept lia-bility for the fact that this did not happen,”Unger says.He offered to pay Van Niekerk’sdoctor’s bill and two free day passes for thegirls “to come back and enjoy another daywith us”.VanNiekerk replied “the offer of R660 and

some rider tickets surely reeks of a slap inthe face for what our children had to end-ure”. Without citing the nature of the inju-ries, Van Niekerk said the doctor would beable to attest to the state the kids were inwhen they arrived at his rooms. Because hefeels justice isnot being served,VanNiekerkcontacted his legal advisors last week.

Unger, in the meantime, had forwardedthe complaint to the park’s insurer after theimpasse was reached.Unger confirmed to TygerBurger: “I have

forwarded this to our public liability insu-rance for independent assessment; I am notallowed to comment further”.“Of course, this is an unfortunate acci-

This is the third Imax tobe opened in the country following on thesuccesses in Durban and Pretoria.

After eight years, Imax is back in SouthAfrica, and this time in partnership withSter-Kinekor, are here to stay, said Ster-Ki-nekor’s marketing executive Doug Place.

Place says the cinema complex at Cape-Gate was selected as the most feasible siteto accommodate the complex conversion toImax, an experience he describes as “theworld’s most immersive cinematic experi-ence.”

“Ek was ’n bietjie te laat; dit het by sy werkgebeur, net daar in die kantoor waar hy ge-staan het. Ek vermoed dat hy onmiddellikgesterf het,” sê Christa.

Batt se lewensmaat van 14 jaar, Alida Bo-tha, sê sy het vir twee ure aan sy sy gebly“totdat Avbob (sy liggaam) kom haal het.”

“Ek was by die huis toe die polisie my ge-bel en gesê het ek moet soontoe kom. Ek hetnog gevra wat is verkeerd – in daardie stadi-um het ek gedink Colin is geskiet.

“Omdat ek nie vervoer gehad het nie, hetdie polisie my kom haal en net gesê ek ‘moetbaie sterk wees’. Hulle het gesê hy is niedood nie, maar toe ek daar kom, wás hy toereeds dood.”

Alida sê sy was histeries, maar is goed be-handel deur die beamptes om haar.

Christa stem saam.“Almal was baie mooi met my en het my

goed behandel,” sê Christa.Brig. Sharon Govender, stasiebevelvoer-

Govender sê ondersteuning vir die familieis gereël en die begrafnis het Maandag plaas-gevind.

Alida sê Batt laat, behalwe haarself, sy maen Alida se kinders (“wat hy soos sy eiegrootgemaak het”), ook ’n seun en dogtervan sy eie agter.

The fence was erected as ameans to keep vagrants out.

For many years council hasfailed to keep vagrants out andthought best to erect a fence tohelp with this – it was admittedto me in an email by CouncillorAndrea Crous.

She further admitted theyhave been taking more thantwo years to roll out a tagsystem which is still not in

place.The plan with the fence was

Mountain bikers kept them atbay, but with no riders aroundthey are free to roam. Theyhave also made holes in thefence.

A magician, stilt walker, ventriloquist,under water escape artist and soundengineer has developed a persona to

combat crime in the Goodwood area andwith this, earned the title of most accom-plished neighbourhood watch member.

Rory MacKay, aka Inspector Gadget, hassome state of the art tools in his Gadget Mo-bile, but says he uses most of them for hisday job as entertainer. In his spare time,

they help him to be the eyes and ears for thepolice and to serve his community.

“It all started with a motorcycle accidenta couple of years ago. I was on my way homefrom Camps Bay, where I was entertainingas a robot, so I was dressed in full combatgear.

“A vehicle with a trailer cut in front of meand I collided with the trailer.

“People who were staying in the bushesnearby were on the scene first. They sawthat my hand was basically off. And theywrapped cardboard around my arm andhand. Then a doctor stopped at the scene ina private vehicle. A lady also appeared fromnowhere and wrapped her scarf around mywrist,” Rory recalls.

He remembers waking up in the hospital,with his hand “wired back on” and beingable to move his fingers.

He says there aremany things around thisincident that he can’t deal with, even today.But a need to help other people was born.

“And that is also why I do the gadgetingstuff, because it makes me a little bit strong-er, emotionally as well. I do have clinical de-pression, but when I am in my character asGadget, I am fine.”

Today he has a reconstructedwrist and re-gained 80% use of his arm and hand.

“For my day job I always need things likemy leatherman and my torch. Those two aremy favourite gadgets.”

He says he haswhole lot of stuff in his van,a Chana star 1.3.

“Anything can happen when I am on theroad. There is a first aid kit, night visionequipment, a chain saw, paintball marker,a video dash-mounted camera, fire and roadbreakdown gear, a spade, an axe, emergencyentry tools, fire extinguishers, jumper ca-bles, cones, a 4-meter collapsible step ladderand bits and bobs and gadgets I carry withme. I also have a proper fireman’s helmet.

“If I get to a scene, where an officer might

be standing with his blue lights flashing anda flat torch, I will stop there, put my hazardson and ask if they need assistance. I will putmy cones out and my torch will be working.They will say: ‘Oh you are quite prepared,you are like the gadget man!’ Yes, I am thegadget man. You know Jim Carrey, inspec-tor Gadget? Well that’s me.”

When patrolling, Rory also wears fire andstab retardant gloves, so he can help in a sit-uation without hurting himself. But, he sayshe stays away from conflict situations.

“We are there to observe and I believe thatvisibility is a deterrent.”

To improve surveillance when patrolling,he has a CCTV camera on top of his van witha screen that pops down on the inside. Healso uses a go pro camera clipped onto a hel-met. “If I approach a situation that seemssuspicious, it can be recorded for evidence.

“The neighbourhood watch is not sup-

posed to become involved in skirmishes. Butin order to get a closer look, to be able to in-form the police what is going on, we need toapproach in a tactical manner.”

As a young man, Rory started working asan entertainer around the world on a float-ing casino on an old war ship before joiningthe Brian Boswell roadshow as, amongstother things, a flying trapeze artist and stuntman.

He does not like boasting about the gadg-ets he invents himself, but was willing toshare the Gadget Mobile’s self-starter withTygerBurger.

After the van is unlocked with the remoteandRory says: “Start!”, the engine automati-cally switches on. Once ordered to “Switchoff!”, the engine obeys immediately.

The secret behind it, he says, is a littleAsian technology and a little InspectorGadget magic.

Sy het eers nie-fiksie geskryf met kultuur, vroue,sielkunde en filosofie as temas. Daarna hetdie fiksie-gogga gebyt.

Ferreira se eerste fiksieboeke sluit inDaar’s ’n mens binne, Die dag toe ons Godgevang het en Eva ontmoet Einstein.

In 1998 verskyn Ferreira se eerste roman,Hoekom honde nie kan sing nie.

Dit vertel die verhaal van ’n huisvrou,Marna, wat sukkel om sin te vind in haardoen en late tussen die kinders deur – totdatsy begin uitreik. Daarop volg Eenmaal ietsdappers.

In 2012 verskyn Ferreira se bekroondejeugverhaal, Tot siens, koning Arthur. Ditwas egter nie haar eerste jeugboek nie.

Sy het Dit van guts aanvanklik as ’n vol-wasse roman geskryf, maar dit later her-skryf as jeugroman, wat ná Tot siens, ko-ning Arthur gepubliseer is. In 2013 worddrie boeke gepubliseer: die kinderboek ’nKameel, ’n sprinkaan en ’n vrot tamatie, dieromanMaar Tintin in Tibet, en dan Dit vatguts.

“Skryf is ’n leerproses,” sê sy. Sy het haarself leer skryf met selfdoenboeke. “Daar ismin skrywers wat uit die staanspoor ’nmeesterstuk lewer. ’n Mens moet baie te-rugvoer kry.”

Haar volgende boek, weer met ’n meisieas hoofkarakter, verskyn volgende jaar ensy werk reeds aan haar volgende manu-skrip.

Sy en haar man het vyf jaar gelede naBristol verhuis toe haarman ’n pos as aktu-aris aanvaar het. Haar oudste dogter, Loui-se (26), bly in Johannesburg, en die jongste,Karen (23), is ’n mediese student in haarvierde jaar aan Tukkies.

Hot Water frontman Donovan Copleywafts into the WP Media office like afresh of breath air.

His calming presence is violently juxta-posed to his vibrant outfit or “colourgemors” as he calls it, but then, the CapeTown singer says he loves colours, andmorespecifically, loves mixing them.“I like tomixmusical genres and colours,”

says Donovan.He is also passionate about South African

rhythms and loves finding crossover points.Think Ghoema meets Sakkie and you’re onthe right track.The rest of his band reflects this perfectly.

While members change, they always comefrom very different music genres.Readers may be familiar with HotWater’s

single, “Wamkelekile”, which was used intheAmericanFilmBlended, and is currentlyenjoying high rotation on local radio sta-tions, but a quick listen to one of his albumswill show that there’s much more to Dono-van’s music.

Township feel“I think at the heart of it, I’m really a folk

musician, but I happen to come from SouthAfrica.”When askedwhere his ideas aboutmixing

cultural references come from, Donovansimply points to heart.“When I started to play guitar, sometimes

the things I played just sounded sort of town-ship-style and that’s what I felt.” He says hismusic and his band came from an explora-tion on what it felt like “to be me”.His new album is a continuation of that

exploration. Donovan will be releasing Son-goma (sic) at Kirstenbosch on Sunday 28 De-cember.“I think it’s a real stamp of the sound that

I’vedevelopedor exploredwith the last threealbums.”The album name comes from a conversa-

tion Donovan had with a stranger one day.He was looking for a word that would de-scribe who he is, what he does and his life’spurpose. He was giving an African womana lift and she pointed out that the beads onhis wrist are oftenworn by sangomas or nat-ural healers. He felt like he could relate.“Songs sort of come from an invisible

place, so where is it that you go to collect asong?” For Donovan, there’s a transforma-tive aspect to writing music so he said: “Iguess you can call me a songoma.”

He describes his “hybrid”word as fun andcheeky, which perfectly encapsulates hismusic.From a production side, he says he’s also

taken a step forward, working with two pro-ducers, including Aron Turest-Swartz, afounding member of Freshlyground.“Aron really got, and gets what it is I’m

doing.”He recorded at Monte Bello Studio and

says working with producers gave him thespace to focus on the delivering the music.“I think it’s distilled HotWater,” Donovan

says of the new album. He says the concertat Kirstenbosch will also reflect that.

Founding venueFanswill beable tohearold favourites like

“Bush Fire” alongside songs from the newalbum, including an Afrikaans song, “Voor-trekker”.“We’re going to have fun, that’s all I can

guarantee,” he says.Donovan says he loves Kirstenbosch. He

launched his first album,Home, at the venuein 2006 and he’s played three shows theresince.“Kirstenbosch is very close to my heart

and was really part of almost founding whatI do.”Hot Water will be playing at Kirstenbosch

“Onkruid is uitgetrek, groente wat te op-

mekaar geplant is, is herplant en beter ver-sprei, en daar is ook meer as 50 sakkies kom-pos in veral die nuwe deel se grond inge-werk.

“Hierna is die tuin ook natuurlik goed nat-gemaak,” sê hy.

Corné sê die landsdienslede het toe metvullisdromme om die skool geloop en plas-tieksakke en ander gemors opgetel wat teendie heinings ophoop.

“Hierna het hul saam met die ouers krie-ket gespeel, ’n worsie gebraai, verfrissende,koue koeldrank gedrink en ook roomys ge-niet voordat hul huis toe is.”

Die groep landsdienslede en ouers wat in die skool se groentetuin gewerfskaf het.

Die Laerskool Bellville-Noord het onlangs ’nbaie interessante kuier van die plaaslikebrandweertak geniet.

Dít is gereël deur Desmond Johnson,senior beampte by die Bellville-brandweer-stasie, wie se span met twee groot brand-weerwaens en twee kleiner noodvoertuie op-gedaag het, vertel Corné Lotter van diéskool. Hy meen dit het “natuurlik tot die op-wondendheid van die leerders bygedra”.

“Twee van dié voertuie het direk opgedaagvanaf ’n huisbrand wat hul moes blus en diepersoneel het die koue koeldranke gretigaanvaar wat ons hul aangebied het,” vertelhy. Die brandweerpersoneel moes ook diédag ’n ongeluk hanteer.

Die lede het toe verskeie kort demonstra-sies gelewer, onder meer om te wys hoe vin-nig brandweerpersoneel die swaar besker-

mende klere en toerusting kan aantrek, hoevan die noodapparaat, soos die hidroliesekake, werk, asook hoe hulle brandslangehanteer.

“Laasgenoemde demonstrasie het natuur-lik op baie pret en sports uitgeloop en laterwas daar bykans nie ’n droë kind op die gras-perk nie,” sê Corné.

“Nóg beter en lekkerder vir die kinderswas toe die brandweer hul skuimmasjienuithaal en demonstreer hoe hul veral olievu-re daarmee blus.

“Op ’n snikhete dag was dié demonstrasiesnet die ding wat die kinders gesoek het om’n bietjie af te koel.”

Corné sê ’n paar van die leerders was “ ’nbietjie terleurgesteld toe hul uitvind presieshoé fiks hul sal moet word om hierdie beroepte kan oorweeg”.

can get some sponsors on board, there is so-me interest from companies and individualswanting to get involved but we had to waitto get registered as aNPC. Now that we havethe papers, it is all systems go. We will also

approach Safa and see if they can help us inany way possible,” he said.The fund committee will also have a

Volgens Stian Cloete, voorsittervan die Agulhas Inflatable Boat Club(AIBC), organiseerders van die wedvaart,oorweeg die AIBC dit sterk om ná vanjaarse wedvaart die handdoek in te gooi. “Om’n wedvaart van dié kaliber aan te biedverg enorme mannekrag, tyd en geld – geldwat ons nie het nie.”

Meer as dertig spanne, insluitend diévan Jacques Matthee en Japie Swart vanKuilsrivier (geborg deur Four Cousins Fi-ver), neem van 28 Desember tot 1 Januarieaan die Trans Agulhas deel. Dit is ’n wed-vaart wat nie net die bote en die krag vandie enjins toets nie, maar ook die uithou-vermoë en konsentrasie van die jaers. Vol-gens die kampioenryer Wimpie Acker-mann moet ’n mens “fisiek fiks én brein-fiks wees”. “’n Mens kan nie vir eenoomblik jou konsentrasie verloor nie. Eenoomblik kan die water nog seepglad weesen dan, minute later, bevind jy jouself inwoeste waters!”

Die Trans Agulhas word oor vyf dae enmeer as 600 km beslis. Dit begin op Pletten-bergbaai en eindig op Nuwejaarsdag 1 Ja-nuarie by die Strand.

Die spanne kan vir een van vier klasseinskryf: die standaardklas; die nuweling-standaardklas; die professionele klas endie gemodifiseerde klas.

Ander plaaslike ryers wat vanjaar in ak-

sie sal wees, is die voormalige kampioeneStefan Lindeque en Tony Ingram (Nulan-dis) van Melkbosstrand, verlede jaar se ge-modifiseerde klas-wenners, Dave Barnetten Tjaart Ooshuizen (Infanta/Yamaha)van Bloubergstrand, en Gerrit Myburgh enAnthony Fouche van Melkbosstrand(Boost Performance Racing).

Dertien spanne neem vanjaar vir die eer-ste keer aan die Trans Agulhas deel.

eindpunt kan beweeg.Op dag een (28 Desember) begin die wed-

vaart by Hobie-strand op Plettenbergbaaien eindig dit by Santos-strand in Mossel-baai, 188,5 km verder. Die strand-kontrole-punte is by Nature’s Valley, The Waves,Brenton-on-Sea, Swartvlei, Wildernis,Glentana, Grootbrakrivier en Kleinbrakri-vier.

Op dag twee (29 Desember) vertrek diebote van Mosselbaai na Stilbaai. Hullemoet by Vleesbaai en Gouritsriviermondse strande aandoen voordat hulle na dieeindpunt kan jaag. Dag twee se skof is 86km. Op dag drie op 30 Desember word ’nafstand van 161 km afgelê. Die spanne trekdie oggend weg uit Stilbaai, vanwaar hulleaandoen by Witsand en Waenhuiskransvoordat hulle by Struisbaai eindig. Die tra-

disionele aandresies vind vanjaar byStruisbaai plaas.

Die vierde skof op 31 Desember strek vanStruisbaai tot Gansbaai. Hulle sal aandoenby die volgende strande: Die Damme, Pear-ly Beach en Uilenskraalmond voordat hul-le die dag se skof suksesvol kan voltooi.

Die finale skof oor 161 km begin by Gans-baai en eindig by die Strand. Die spannemoet by Onrus, Kleinmond, Pringlebaai enGordonsbaai aandoen voordat hulleStrand se kant toe mik.

Sports facilities across the Cape are fall-ing prey to the acts of brazen vandalsand thieves.

A total of 55 sports complexeswere vandal-ised and burgled between April and Novem-ber. A staggering 217 incidents were report-ed during this period, the city confirms.

Sports clubs and facility managementcommittees are calling on the city to step upsecurity, as they fear the continuous crimi-nal activities may stifle or end operations atthe organisations and facilities.

Bennet Bailey, chairperson of the RygateLocal Football Association (LFA) whichcalls Johnson Road Sports Complex in Ry-lands its home, says vandals stripped the fa-cility in the first week of October – only acouple of weeks after the end of the footballseason. He claims the damage amounts toR200 000, a cost they cannot cover.

“The interior of the clubhouse wasstripped bare. All the cabling and wiringwas removed. The wiring of the floodlightswas also removed and the electricity box re-moved and damaged,” Bailey says.

Similarly, chairperson of the Metropoli-tan LFA, Wayne Weitz, says the Metropoli-tan Sports Complex in Bonteheuwel was hit

at the end of October. The facility wasstripped to resemble a shell and the organi-sation had to replace the trophies and med-als for its annual prizegivingdays before the event.

“Everything was fine dur-ing the season, except for theodd burglary, but when theseason ended and there wasless activity at the facility,the criminals pounced.

“The MFMC is constantlyreminded that it is not theowner of the facility, but on-ly the custodians. Yet theowner, the city, doesn’t takeresponsibility for its assets.”

In local sporting circles,Weitz adds, there has beentalk of several facilities being vandalisedover the last couple of months. “There wasa time when security guards were placed atthe facility, but they informed us their con-tract had come to an end and that was theend of security,” he explains.

“The city spends millions upgrading andmaintaining facilities, so I believe theyshouldprotect it or theworkwill beuseless.”TygerBurger has reported on incidents at

the Wesbank Sports Complex, DurbanvilleSports Complex and Ruyterwacht Sports

Complex,while its sister publicationCityVi-sion reported on incidents at the Gugulethuand Philippi swimming pools.

Furthermore, it’s othersister publication, People’sPost has reported on burgla-ry and vandalism at severalsports facilities across thepeninsula over the last cou-ple of months. These includethe Stephan Reagan, Rock-lands and Strandfonteinsports complexes, andSwartklip Indoor SportsCentre in Mitchell’s Plain,the Hoosain Parker SportsComplex in Parkwood andthe Johnson Road SportsComplex. Burglary and van-

dalism were also reported at clubhouses atKraaifontein Sports Complex.

Despite the number of incidents, the citysays it cannot provide continuous securitypresence.

Mayco member for community servicesand special projects, Belinda Walker, says a“limited budget” of R36m was allocated forsecurity in the department budget.

“The department has had to rationalisethe use of security personnel at some of itsfacilities to remain within the allocated

budget in the current financial year,” shesays.

“The departmentmanages a large numberof public facilities across the city and hasidentified hotspots where facilities are par-ticularly vulnerable to theft and vandalism– security personnel will be present at thesefacilities. It is closelymonitoring these facil-ities to find the most effective and financial-ly sustainable options for securing them.”

But security guards aren’t the only option,Walker adds, as the city has invested consid-erably in fences and alarms. It is also work-ing to create partnerships with communityorganisations such as neighbourhoodwatches to help deter theft and vandalism.

The city has spent R4,8m on repairs andreplacements at facilities which have fallenvictim to theft and vandalism, Walker says.

“This is money that could have been putto better use to either upgrade these facili-ties or provide additional facilities in areaswhere there are limited or no sport and rec-reation facilities,” she says.

“Now, more than ever, we need our com-munities to work with us and take owner-ship of their recreational spaces. We urgeresidents to report any suspicious behav-iour immediately.”V Report incidents anonymously on the toll-freenumber 0800 225 669.
