Have you come across The Fit Foodie website? If not, you’ll want to check it out. It is a fantastic recipe site and blog, run by Sally, who focuses on creating delicious but nutritious low-calorie food. For those of you who are thinking ‘but I don’t spend my time counting calories’, stay with us. The thing about these super healthy recipes is that many of them are naturally gluten, dairy and processed-ingredients free, which means they’re not only good for you, but you’ll find it so much easier to discover recipes that are allergen-free. While spending time browsing the recipes on her site, we discovered the range of protein ball mixes she has personally created. The flavours include Chocolate and Chia, Vanilla and Coconut, and Cookie Dough.

The collection has been developed based on pea proteins, which have a digestibility rating of 98%. What does that mean? Well, it means they are gentle on your stomach as the amino acids are broken down quickly, and when it comes to digestion, the less strain on our bodies the better! The range is completely free from eggs, dairy and animal products, and are a great source of protein in snack form. We were intrigued- the mixes seemed to be simple and quick to make, super good for you and suitable for our dietary needs. With our interest piqued, we ordered a mix and a few days later they arrived at our door. If you ever give us multiple options, and one of those options includes chocolate, we invariably choose the chocolate. But this time we can do so knowing we are looking after our bodies, because this mix is created using the healthiest of ingredients.

The process of making the protein balls is this simple:

Pour 3 tablespoons of honey into a mixing bowl...

Melt 3 tablespoons of coconut oil, and mix with the honey...

Once combined, slowly add 3 tablespoons of water to bind the mixture...

Roll into small balls and put on a plate.

Once rolled, the protein balls are ready to go into the fridge. The taste of the mix is fairly strong, so we made around 20 small balls to enjoy, however you can make them as little or as big as your heart desires! If you find the balls are coming apart a little in your hands, just give them a gentle squeeze and they will bind perfectly.

Then, refrigerate for half an hour. We told you it was easy!

The protein balls will keep for up to seven days in your fridge...unless you eat them all beforehand. We didn’t add any extras to ours, but you can easily mix in some sultanas, nuts or berries to give the balls some variety. Sally suggests trying gojis with this mix!So what is our verdict? The protein balls firm up impressively in the fridge, and keep their shape. They are best kept cold, as with most coconut oil based treats, they can soften when at room temperature. But what about the most important thing- the taste? Well, they are deliciously chocolate-y and quite moor-ish. The texture may be a little different than what you are used to, but it is so obvious that you are putting something both tasty and healthy into your body. We were very impressed! This mix is a perfect option for those days when you don’t feel like spending hours in the kitchen, but need healthy and easy snacks on hand for the next few days. The protein ball mix costs $14.50 plus $6 postage. You can buy these gorgeous treats from the online store, or just head over to the Fit Foodie to find out more.
