Making a difference matters, andwhen we hear about those very specialpeople who tirelessly work to help oth-ers, it inspires us to do what we can totry to make a difference on an individ-ual level. That is why local doctorsand husband-and-wife team, StephanieEldridge, MD and Amir Shirmoham-mad, MD decided to come up witha way to recognize individuals wholive here in Tampa Bay and make adifference for others with their TrinityFamily Physicians’ Tampa Bay MakingA Difference Award.

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles ishonored to have been chosen byTrinity Family Physicians to help searchfor nominees and to share these inspir-ing stories with our readers and we areexcited to announce that Ann Poole ofHeritage Springs is the most recent re-cipient of the Trinity Family Physicians’Tampa Bay Making A DifferenceAward. Ann Poole, a little fireball of en-ergy, has what I call “good vibes” andshe has been a true force behind thePasco County Special Olympics for 13years, but she gives a lot of the credit toher neighbors at Heritage Springs.“There is just something special aboutthe people of Heritage Springs,” saysAnn. “I’ve been living there 15 yearsand when it comes to the SpecialOlympics, they open their hearts andtheir wallets and checkbooks!”

Ann truly loves life and when sheisn’t in her dancing shoes – she is adancer with Silver Follies – she is busywith many volunteer projects. She has

definitely helped to make a differ-ence for the Special Olympic ath-letes of Pasco County. In its firstyear, Night at the Races raised$1200 and now fifteen years later, that sum is raised to more than$25,000 and over the past 15 years,Night at the Races has given morethan $240,000 to Special Olympicsof Pasco County.

Night at the Races, held annu-ally in January at Heritage Springs,is the largest fundraiser for thePasco County Special Olympics. This year’s event was attended by270 people, and part of the pro-ceeds raised were used to sponsorsome Land O’ Lakes kids to travelto California where they will com-pete at the World Special Olympics!

“The Special Olympics does somuch for these kids,” says Dr.Shirmo. “Anne invites some of theathletes to come out and talk to thesponsors every year, and it is always atearjerker for everyone.” Dr. Shirmoand Ann shared how proud they are

Divorce is never easy. Not only isit a huge change in your life, but it canalso drain your family’s finances, takeyears to settle, and create friction andanimosity among family members.Tampa Friendly Divorce offers couplesa mediation process that can makeyour divorce as easy, painless, and in-expensive as possible. Located at 5111Ehrlich Road, Tampa Friendly Di-vorce uses a two-mediator, team ap-proach to save you time, money, andunneeded conflict. Along the way, At-torney Chris Shulman and BrendaEvans – both are Florida SupremeCourt Certified Family, Circuit, andCounty Mediators – provide help tocouples who want a divorce. Theyhelp them make decisions together ina way that meets their family’s needs, now, and in the future.

“When two people are able tocommunicate, they are better off sit-ting together to make decisions aboutthe future of their lives rather than let-ting a court decide,” says Brenda. “Weprovide a forum for mature, respectful

conversations about issues that needto be decided when going through adivorce. We help couples set up a co-parenting plan and determine childsupport. Our process is very proactive.Together, we develop a plan for thefuture and try to eliminate any fore-seeable issues.”

“Tampa Friendly Divorce em-powers couples to make their own per-sonal decisions,” says Chris. Theystrive to help couples develop a di-vorce plan both agree on, and if thecouple agrees before the mediationprocess begins, Tampa Friendly Di-vorce attorneys will file all the neces-sary forms with the court so thatclients can ease into the next phase oftheir lives.

“Going through a divorce was ajourney I did not want to take and thehorror stories I heard from severalpeople caused a lot of anxiety,” saysTampa Friendly Divorce clientC.D.C. “However, in working withTampa Friendly Divorce I was able towork alongside a team of professionalsthat cared about both parties andhelped us to think through issues that

had the potential to cause bothfinancial and emotional hard-ships had they not been ad-dressed at that time. I am verygrateful for their approach andhave recommended them toothers facing a similar situa-tion.”

One of the only DivorceMediation services of its kind inTampa, Co-founder and Attor-ney Chris Shulman recognizedthat there was a lack of this typeof service for couples when hewas going through his own di-vorce. Chris is a professionalneutral with almost 20 years ofexperience. Between service asa mediator, arbitrator, hearingofficer, and federal-sector EEOcomplaint adjudicator, Chris hasresolved or, in the case of medi-ation, helped the parties resolve, more than 4,200 matters. Medical Center of Trinity isproud to announce that it is one offour Tampa Bay Area hospitals to re-ceive Blue Cross and Blue Shields’designation as a Blue Distinction®Center+ for Maternity Care. In an ef-fort to help prospective parents findhospitals that deliver quality, afford-able maternity care, Florida Blue an-nounced that Brandon RegionalHospital, Citrus Memorial Hospital,Medical Center of Trinity and St. Pe-

tersburg General Hospital have beendesignated as some of the first hospi-tals to receive the Blue Distinction®Center+ for Maternity Care designa-tion, a new designation under theBlue Distinction Specialty Care pro-gram.

Nearly four million babies areborn in the U.S. annually, makingchildbirth the most common cause ofhospitalization. The new Blue Distinc-tion Centers+ for Maternity Care pro-

gram evaluates hospitals on severalquality measures, including the per-centage of newborns that fall into thecategory of early elective delivery, anongoing concern in the medical com-munity. Compared with babies born39 weeks or later, early term infantsface higher risks of infant death andrespiratory ailments such as respiratorydistress syndrome, pneumonia, andrespiratory failure, among other con-ditions. These babies also have ahigher rate of admission to Neonatal

Intensive Care Units. In addition, hospitals that receive

a Blue Distinction Center+ for Mater-nity Care designation have agreed tomeet requirements that align withprinciples that support evidence-basedpractices of care. This includes initiat-ing programs to promote successfulbreastfeeding as described in the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative by Baby-Friendly USA or the Mother-FriendlyHospital program by the Coalition forImproving Maternity Services (CIMS)through its “Ten Steps of Mother-Friendly Care.” The program alsoevaluates hospitals on overall patientsatisfaction, including a willingness torecommend the hospital to others.

Blue Distinction Centers+ forMaternity Care, an expansion of thenational Blue Distinction SpecialtyCare program, include hospitals rec-ognized for delivering quality, afford-able specialty care safely and effectivelybased on objective measures devel-oped with input from the medicalcommunity. To receive a Blue Distinc-tion Centers+ for Maternity Care des-ignation, a hospital must also meetrequirements for cost efficiency.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield(BCBS) companies across the nation

have recognized more than 650 hospi-tals as Blue Distinction Centers+ forMaternity Care. Hospitals recognizedfor these designations were assessedusing a combination of publicly avail-able quality information and costmeasures derived from BCBS compa-nies’ medical claims.

Since 2006, the Blue DistinctionSpecialty Care program has helped pa-tients find quality providers for theirspecialty care needs in the areas ofbariatric surgery, cardiac care, complexand rare cancers, knee and hip replace-ments, spine surgery and transplants.Research shows that, compared toother facilities, those designated asBlue Distinction Centers demonstratebetter quality and improved outcomesfor patients. On average, Blue Distinc-tion Centers+ are also 20 percentmore cost-efficient than non-Blue Dis-tinction Center+ designated healthcare facilities.
