From The Editor Kim Thomas

Thanks to our readers and our ad-vertisers we have enjoyed tremendousgrowth here at Neighborhood News& Lifestyles and along with thatgrowth have come upgrades to ourwebsite and email system. We cherishthe emails and letters we receive fromreaders and depend upon the informa-tion we receive to keep our news briefsinteresting and the community calen-dar up-to-date. With four publica-tions, each with two email addresses –one for ads and one for editorial con-tent – we decided to simplify thingsfor ourselves and our readers and ad-vertisers. Plus a recent problem withYahoo underscored the need for achange. However, that problem didwarm our hearts because of the greatoutpouring of support and concernthat came from advertisers.

We’d like to share what happenedsimply to warn others about possibleemail hacking. Our General ManagerJim O’Reilly has a great relationshipwith our advertisers, many of whomhe has worked with for about eightyears, and when his email account was

hacked and an email went out to hisentire address book indicating that hewas stuck in a foreign country and hispersonal effects and travel documentshad been stolen, including his passportand identification, and that he neededassistance. It looked like it was sentfrom him but it was not. This emailwas sent out at 5:42 a.m. I saw itwhen I first woke up and at firstthought that Jim was playing a joke onme, but when I saw the time it wassent I knew better. Even with his greatsense of humor, I knew he wouldn’tbe playing any jokes that early!

I called Jim around 7 a.m. to lethim know and he had already receivednumerous emails from concernedclients offering to help him. Jim could-n’t believe how many people reachedout to him. This really drove home acouple of points to us. First, we have afantastic, caring community and clien-tele. And, second, we needed to im-plement a more securecommunication.

If this ever happens to you, thefirst thing to do is change your pass-word. To keep your account safe, it isrecommended to change your pass-

word every couple of months.

hat a delight to discover a cleaning agency that trains their girls to trulyclean! The "angels" deal with all those little things and places which are

often overlooked by others. They are thorough, friendly, and aim toplease - even adjusting their choice of cleaning products to accommodate myallergies. I am so happy to have found them.Marilou ReedVilla Rosa, Lutz

The Cleaning Angel not only does a great job cleaning my house they alsotake great care of my 2 dogs. When I come home after a long day at the office, my house not only looks fantastic it smells clean. The girls pay attentionto every detail so you can rest assured that your house is super clean - not justa surface clean that you get from some other companies. They go above & beyond the call of duty. One time my dog wasn't feeling well and the girlscalled me immediately. I really appreciated that special treatment. Most othercompanies would have just left and not said anything.Monica GobeliOakstead, Land O Lakes

The Cleaning Angel has been coming to my home twice a month for about ayear now. In my opinion, they provide great cleanings and tend to get areasthat I have given little thought to. However, the biggest plus for me really hasbeen having the same team or at least one familiar person on the team come.I have a great Team with Heather leading and they are always happy to addressany questions or concerns I may have. Donna and Sandy are great and alwayscommunicate with me. It is my pleasure to have The Cleaning Angels helpingme out. There is nothing like a shiny faucet!Shaney NadelWest Chase, Tampa

I originally hired The Cleaning Angel to do a deep cleaning last May afterreading testimonials from other clients in the local newspaper. Donna sent a 3-person crew to my house and they spent most of Saturday cleaning. In addition to the normal dusting, vacuuming and mopping, they cleaned all theblinds, the baseboards, the tops of every cabinet and other hard to reach places, wiped down every knick-knack (and I have many) and got stains out in thebathroom and kitchen that I thought were there for good. I don't think myhouse had been that clean since we moved in. I was so impressed that I immediately talked to Donna about having them back to do regular cleaningsevery 2 weeks. One of the smartest decisions I ever made. I have used housecleaners on and off for 25 years and can honestly say this is the best companythat I have ever worked with. With other companies I've used, inevitably, thework quality started to deteriorate after the first few cleanings or there wasinconsistent quality across different crews that came in. I have not seen that

with The Cleaning Angel. The teams have been prompt, courteous, andprofessional. I cannot recommend The Cleaning Angel enough.

Clara BroadVilla Rosa, Lutz

I've used The Cleaning Angel for at least one year. I've found them to be professional, hard working ladies. They call days before to tell you the time theywill arrive on the cleaning day. That's important to me. Best thing of all they doa good job.Debbie PughLake Keystone, Odessa

After trying and firing several cleaning companies, a neighbor told me about TheCleaning Angels. I have been very pleased with the service they provide. They areprofessional, dependable and do a great job. I highly recommend them!JoAnne CzarnowskiWest Chase, Tampa

In the past, I have used several cleaning services but none can compare with thecrew I have now, The Cleaning Angel. They have been cleaning my home for overseven years and I have never been more satisfied. Their team leader and trainer isIleah. She arrives with a cheerful demeanor and sets about her work diligently. Ilook forward to her visits. The Cleaning Angel always go that extra mile, such asdusting pictures and wiping window seals. No task is too small or too large for thiscleaning team. They are extremely trustworthy and reliable. When they leave, Ilove the smell of cleanliness that permeates my home.Judy ConforteIvy Lake Estates, Land o Lakes

We have used The Cleaning Angel for just over a year and I wonder how we evergot by without them! Our first meeting was with the company's owner, Donna;she made us feel very confident and comfortable about the service her companywould be providing. Donna assured us that what was promised would be deliveredbecause it was her name on the line. As business owners ourselves the message wasloud and clear and we decided to give them a try. The Cleaning Angel has providedthe phenomenal service that Donna promised and more. They are dependable, honest, pleasant, hardworking and efficient. They come in and get the job done.Thank you "Cleaning Angels" for making the task of maintaining my home easier on me!Esther and Michael HalmanCrescent Oaks, Tarpon Springs

Thank you Donna for sending your girls that do outstanding work. They are verypleasant, professional, and extremely careful around my furniture. Have tried different services and cleaning ladies in the past and they were always breaking mythings. Your girls come in, go through my home with efficiency and I have beenvery pleased with the outcome.Marie GoldbergFox Hollow, Trinity

In October 2008 three businesspartners opened the first Brass Tap atThe Shoppes of Wiregrass in WesleyChapel. Two years later they openedone in Brandon, and in March 2012,Trinity was lucky enough to get theirown neighborhood Brass Tap. At anygiven time you’ll find 40 – 60 differentcraft beers on tap at The Brass Tap; 25– 30 of them are staple beers that theyalways carry, and 30 – 35 beerschange, allowing for a varied experi-ence every visit. They also have hun-dreds of imported or local craft beer inbottles (which can be purchased forcarry out, too), in addition to pre-mium wines and cigars. The Brass Taphas great relationships with brewersand distributors which benefits cus-tomers who would normally not haveaccess to such an amazing variety ofspecialty microbrews locally.

General Manager Jessica Buchtahas created a feel to the upscale beerbar that’s very much in tune with ourarea. She started with great hospital-ity. The staff is extremely friendly andhelpful; wanting to make sure you findthe perfect beer for your liking. Allyou have to do is name a couple ofbeers you know you already like, andthey’ll describe the flavor profile ofnew beers you might enjoy. If you’restill undecided they’ll let you sample asuggestion to help you commit. When you visit most afternoons thereis a very laidback, relaxed atmosphereto the bar. You’ll find all ages relaxingon the patio or inside cooling off witha beer after a day at work or a round ofgolf.

Although it doesn’t serve food,Brass Tap has partnered with localrestaurants such as Buffalo Wild

Wings, Five Guys, Ichiban Sushi andBrick Oven Pizzeria, all of which de-liver to the bar. Jessica says that even ifyou’ve made something at home andwant it with your beer you can bring itin. If you’re looking for a night out,The Brass Tap is also the place to go.Local bands such as The Sunsetters,One Mile Final and Tone Granade arein full swing starting at 8 p.m. onThursdays and at 9 p.m. on Fridaysand Saturdays, when the bar is aliveand energetic. If it’s possible for a barto be both upbeat and relaxed at thesame time, The Brass Tap has mas-tered it.

One of the great new beers thatThe Brass Tap introduced me to whenI visited is the locally brewed BigStorm’s Wavemaker, which is amberale that is made right in Odessa. BigStorm’s owners Clay Yarn and MikeBishop enjoyed The Brass Tap whenthe first one opened in Wesley Chapel, and now their own beer is beingserved here. Clay explains, “The BrassTap gives us a great place to displayour beer. Our brewery is right acrossthe street in the West Pasco IndustrialPark. We’ve always had a good work-ing relationship with The Brass Tap,and we wanted our first beer tappedthere. It was a natural choice—they’ve always been very supportive ofus even when we were gettingstarted.”

Specials on Craft BeersWhen you visit you’ll find there

are plenty of daily specials. Happyhour is Monday-Friday, 3-7 p.m., with$1.50 off all drafts. Monday andWednesdays are hospitality industrynights, when if you wear your shirt, bring in your paystub or I.D., you’llreceive half off all drafts and selectwines starting at 9 p.m. On Tuesdays

Brew Crew Members received 25 per-cent off all bottles, and Thursday isladies night with two for one on selectdrafts and house wines starting at 9p.m. Each Sunday five different selectdrafts are chosen for only $3.50 each.Once again Brew Crew Members saveon Sunday when they receive 25 per-cent off all drafts.

Dr. Jorge Santana at 1 Spine Chi-ropractic & Rehabilitation stresses thefact that people should not have achesand pains. “Headaches and pains arenot normal,” says Dr. Santana. “If youare feeling pain, you need to deter-mine the cause of the problem. At 1Spine Chiropractic we discuss yourdaily life and stress and examine all thepotential causes of your pain to deter-mine how to get rid of it so you canstart leading a happier, healthier, moreactive life again. If you’ve been in anaccident that is causing you pain, youneed to come see us as soon as youfeel pain. The sooner we are able tofind the problem, the quicker we willbe able to help you.”

How Can 1 Spine Chiropractic &Rehabilitation Help You?

The most common reason peoplevisit a chiropractor is because of backpain either caused from an injury or

accident. “I came to Dr. Santana re-cently and have been more thanpleased,” says Steven Waskey. “Icrashed my dirt bike a couple yearsago and wrapped my back around atree. Dr. Santana came by recommen-dation from a friend, and within threemonths, I already started feeling no-ticeable differences. I’m extremelyhappy with the progress we’ve madeso far and can’t wait to be 100%again.”

And while Dr. Santana helpsmany people who have been hurt inaccidents, he also sees people who ex-perience daily pain but are unsure ofthe reason. It may be from sitting at acomputer or desk the wrong way orlifting something improperly. Dr. San-tana stresses that pain is your bodiesway of telling you that something iswrong and that as soon as you feelpain, you should visit the doctor to de-termine what is causing it.

In fact if your spine has becomemisaligned it can cause pain all over

your body not just inyour back. Knee pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, neck painand arthritis are all jointproblems readily ad-dressed by chiropracticcare.

Spinal misalignment can also leadto headaches, migraines and allergy is-sues. Dr. Santana has a patient whosuffered from migraines her whole life. Her medication was expensive and didnot work very well. After her appoint-ment with Dr. Santana, she stoppedhaving her migraines. She is now aregular patient of his as is the rest ofher family and they all see tremendousbenefits to their health.

Your spine connects your brain tothe rest of your body and if somethingis out of place in your spine, yourbrain may not be able to communicate

as clearly as it should. In addition tohelping with back pain from accidents, injuries or muscle strains, regular chi-ropractic care can also help you lead ahealthier, happier, pain free life. Whenthe communication from your brain toyour body is at optimum capacity, youmay find numerous benefits like betterperformance in sports or exercise, bet-ter food digestion and quicker recov-ery time from illnesses.

According to recent research bythe International Chiropractic Pedi-atric Association, spinal manipulationtherapy is safe and can be successful intreating children of all ages. Some par-

James "Arry" Housh has been ac-tively involved in the roofing companyfor thirty years. Alongside his wifeBecky Housh and with the help oftheir two sons Stephen and Matthew,he runs the reputable Arry's Roofing,a company dedicated to providingquality craftsmanship and exceptionalcustomer service. The Housh family'sdedication has enabled Arry's Roofingto expand their small, honorable andtrustworthy family-run business intothe well-known and trusted companyit is today; servicing residential, com-mercial and industrial projects withvalue and integrity.

I recently spoke to Matt regard-ing metal roofing and the benefits itprovides homeowners. Arry’s Roofingfully supports the advantages of metalroofing and is a specialist in metalroofing. Additionally, Arry’s in-housecustom sheet metal shop allows themetal roofing specialists to customizeyour roof to be an exact fit for yourhouse and your designs.

Matt says, “Metal roofing is more

of a craftsmanship and an art, similarto tile. In the early 2000s we saw theadvantages of metal roofing andstarted our metal roofing shop, trainedour guys specifically in metal roofingand began to create a reputation ofbeing metal roofing specialists.”

Metal Advantages:Metal roofing is known to be ini-

tially more expensive than other roof-ing types at first glance, but in thelong run metal roofing can save home-owners money due to its durability, energy efficiency and ability to increasethe resale value of your home.

Matt explains that the averagelifespan of a non-metal roof is seven-teen years; whereas metal roofing isproven to last 2-3 times longer withfewer repairs than other types of roof-ing materials. When installed by quali-fied and skilled metal roof specialists, metal roofing can last for longer than50 years with little maintenance. Mattadds that a metal roof is extremelybeneficial, especially in Florida, be-cause there is no other roof compositethat is as strong and as durable as a

metal roof, which if installed properlycan effectively withstand the harshFlorida winds and storms.

If you are a homeowner and areseeking out a way to reduce the priceof your energy bill and would like tobuild a roof with energy-saving mate-rial, Arry’s Roofing recommends youlook into getting a metal roof. Metalroofing is economically sustainable andbetter for the environment than manytraditional types of materials, such aspetroleum-based shingles. The instal-lation of reflective metal roofing cansave your home up to 40 percent incooling costs.

Arry's Roofing is proactive and

innovative, keeping up to date in theindustry by furthering their educationregularly. Matt says, “We use newproducts that are safe. By keeping ontop of what is offered, we are able tobring our customers cleaner, betterand safer products."

The company has all the knowl-edge necessary to help you find theright metal roof that will not only lookbeautiful on your home, but will alsobe an asset in saving money and cut-ting energy costs. Arry’s Roofing hasanswers to any questions regarding theadvantages of metal roofing and is pre-pared to help you make the best deci-sions regarding your home’s roof.

SAT AND ACT UPDATETests That Can Determine Your Student’s Educational Future

By Dr. Wayne Adams

“Hi Sue. You look a little con-cerned,” said Linda. “What’s on yourmind this morning?”

Responding with a worried tonein her voice, Sue answered, “My sonis a senior this year in high schooland my daughter is a junior. Now Iam hearing about SAT’s, ACT’s, andPSAT’s. What are these tests? Whyare these tests important? What dothey do? Can I help them get readyin some way? I need to find out. I amreally confused!”

Looking thoughtful for aminute, Linda added, “Now that youmention it, I have wondered thesame thing about Mike and Susan.Mike will be a sophomore, and Susana freshman, in high school. My worryis more about the FCAT. Justyesterday, I heard about a new ‘Endof Course” exam for every highschool course. If a student does notpass the EOC, no matter what a

student’s grade in the course, thatstudent fails and has to repeat theclass. That’s a little scary. Have youheard anything about this?”

LET’S FIND SOME ANSWERSEvery fall, conversations like this

happen across the country as parentsthink about college admissions, scholarships, and helping theirstudents do their best in high school.Let’s find some answers about theSAT, ACT, PSAT, FCAT, and EOC.Our conclusion will talk more aboutwhat you as a parent can do so yourstudent can do their best on theseexaminations.THE SAT

The SAT is a nationally standard-ized test given seven times a year bythe College Board. Three tests aregiven in the fall, and four in thespring.

The three major test sections areWriting, Critical Reading, andMathematics. Within each section arethree individual tests, and there is

one unidentified experimental test, for a total of ten test sectionsrequiring about four hours of testingtime. Scores range between 200 and800 for each section, with amaximum score for all three sectionsof 2400.

These tests are only given atauthorized testing centers such asdesignated high schools, require areservation online at collegeboard.com, and require a normal fee of $50to take the full test. Results arepublished in a password protectedaccount on the internet, and are alsomailed to the student, 3 - 4 weeksafter the test.

The stated purpose of the SAT isto assess a student’s ability to dosucceed in college. In other words, itis a “predictive” test. The CollegeBoard says there is a definitecorrelation between scoring levels onthe SAT and later academic success incollege.

Most colleges believe thisstatement, so they consider SATscores seriously in determining

whether to admit a studentcompared to other applications.Normally, the major factors in anadmission decision are class standing,GPA, results on standardized test(s),quality of essay and writing skills, anddistinctive community or otheractivities.

A student can take the SATexamination as many times asdesired. One important feature is thata student can “pick and choose” thebest score in each section, and latersubmit only these scores tocolleges. The college will not knowthese scores came from differentexaminations. Also, there is no timelimit currently on when scores can becounted – meaning a high score for aninth grader can be used when thatstudent is a senior.

The next three SAT exams arescheduled for Oct. 6th, Nov. 3rd, andDec. 1st. Mostcolleges require com-pleted applications and receipt of allstandardized tests by Jan. 1st, with theUniversity of Florida normally requir-ing the full package a month earlier.

THE ACTThe ACT is a nationally

standardized test given six times ayear by American College Testing.Three tests are given in the fall, andthree in the spring. The next examsare on Sept. 8th, Oct. 27th, and Dec.8th.

The four required sections areEnglish, Mathematics, Reading, andScience. Essay is an optional fifthsection, which all students shouldalso take at the same time because, ifa college requires it, the student mustretake a whole examination to do so.

Scores range between 1 - 36 foreach section. The “composite” is theaverage score of the four requiredsections, and ranges from 1 – 36.

These tests are only given atauthorized testing centers such asdesignated high schools, require areservation online at act.org, and

require a normal fee of $48 to takethe full test. Results are published ina password protected account on theinternet, and are also mailed to thestudent, 3 - 4 weeks after the test.

The stated purpose of the ACTis to assess a student’s current level ofeducational achievement and theirability to succeed in college. SAT AND ACT ARE VERYDIFFERENT

On the surface, it may seem thatthe SAT and ACT are very similar. In fact, they have major differences.

For example: the SAT hasdifferent requirements for the essay; ismore dependent on vocabulary; is notas dependent on reading passages andevaluations; and math is easier becausemany formulas are given to students atthe beginning of the math sections, problems are not as advanced, trigonometry is not included, and itdoes not have testing in science.

The ACT is the opposite.Students with stronger mathematicalskills and logical thinking tend to dobetter on the ACT. Students withstronger verbal skills and intuitivethinking tend to do better on the SAT.

THE PSATThe PSAT is far more than just

preparation for the SAT. It is theonly national test used to determineif a student is to determine eligibil-ity and qualification for the Na-tional Merit Scholarship Programthat can include major NationalMerit Scholarships. Colleges givemajor additional scholarships to Na-tional Merit Scholars.

THE FCATThe Florida Comprehensive

Assessment Test is given to all tenthgraders in public high schools in thespring. If a high school student doesnot pass the FCAT or an acceptablesubstitute before the end of theirsenior year, that student will notgraduate. Scoring an 18 on and theReading or the Math sections of theACT, or a 280 in Reading and a 370in Math on the SAT, fulfill thisrequirement as well. The FCAT isbeing phased out by the EOC inFlorida public high schools.

THE EOC (End-of-Course Assessments)

EOC testing has already started inpublic high schools in mathematics.Shortly, this testing will berequired for reading, writing, science, and history. Examinations are taken

during one week at the completion ofa full course. Students have all the timeneeded (normally 80 minutes or less)to complete the test in onesitting, everything is computerized, and the student must pass the test toreceive credit for the course. EOC’sare not required for students withcertifications for longer times on tests.
