Every year as hurricane seasonrolls in, we wonder if Tampa Bay willget slammed by Mother Nature? It isalways a possibility and those who pre-pare in advance fare better in badweather. National Hurricane Prepared-ness Week ran from May 27–June 2.You can download a Tropical CyclonePreparedness Guide (PDF) atwww.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare or visitwww.ready.gov for tips on how toprotect your family and property. These guides are helpful, but the mostimportant thing when facing a hurri-cane threat is to use common sense.

As someone who has run fromseveral hurricanes, I can tell you this –don’t wait until one is bearing down onyou to leave! The problem with hurri-canes is that you just can’t trust theirnumber – a Cat. 1 storm can morphinto a Cat. 2 in minutes, or a Cat. 2into a Cat. 3, and so on. Many times, the storm will strengthen right before itslams into land. My personal advice isto put your family photos in a box oron a flash drive that you can carry withyou. It is a good idea to keep your in-

surance information and other impor-tant papers in a portable file (or at leastknow where everything is if you needto go). A hurricane is no force to bereckoned with!

Prior to moving to this part of thestate, my husband and I started ourfamily in the Panhandle, building ahouse on St. George Island. I still missthat view! During our 10 years there,we experienced quite a few storms.

Living on a barrier island, evenduring a tropical storm, we left andwould stay at my sister’s house inApalachicola because at that time noone could trust the aging bridge notto be washed out. During one suchtropical storm that did develop into aCat. 1 hurricane just before hittingland, I lay on the floor at my sister’sunable to sleep as I listened to thewind howling and the weather radio, hearing the report of three tornadoeshitting St. George Island and destroy-ing homes there. When we returned, Isaw the path that one of them took –winding around our home and ourtwo closest neighbors, snapping offtrees on the vacant lots around us. Wewere all so fortunate to only lose a few

shingles. The biggest scare of my life was in

September 1995, when hurricane Opaldestroyed a good part of the Panhan-dle east of Panama City Beach. At thattime we were building our home andrenting a tiny house at Indian PassBeach. My husband Jack was out ofthe state and my sister’s husband de-cided to stay and help the NationalGuard. So the two of us girls, withthree little children and two big dogsin tow, decided to wait for other familymembers to leave and travel together.Never again! Waves crashed over mySUV on the land-bridge as we leftApalachicola heading to Perry, andwhile we were on the bridge the localradio station announced that it wasclosed. My sister and I just startedpraying. We had to drive around a treethat had fallen across the highway andparts of Hwy. 98 – usually a scenicdrive along the Gulf Coast – were al-ready washing away. It was truly terrify-ing.

Due to the population, evacuatingfrom here will be much more difficultif you wait. Hopefully, we have anothermild season, but you just never know.

Hurricane Season Rolls In – Will This be the Year?

High School and the University ofFlorida College of Veterinary Medi-cine. Prior to veterinary school, Danihad experience in human hospicecare and she wanted to use thatknowledge to help pets.

Dr. Gardner also graduated fromUniversity of Florida College of Vet-erinary Medicine, where she andDani McVety had became goodfriends. It was her personal experi-ence with providing hospice care toher terminally ill dog that had cancer, and finally having to say goodbye tohim at home, that prompted her tojoin Dr. McVety in this much-neededfield of veterinary medicine.

Rarely have I met a businessowner that brings me to tears, but inmeeting with Dr. McVety, who losther own little dog recently, and talk-ing about my experience of losingour 14-year-old dog, we both endedup a bit teary-eyed. I could feel herempathy and that she truly, deeplycares for the pets and their ownerswho call on her.

Just out of vet-erinary school, Dr.

McVety had an experience that im-pacted her. “I knew I wanted love inthe name of my practice,” she ex-plains. “There was this lady whobrought her dog in to be euthanized. She was holding and hugging him.He was on her lap and I thought thisis how euthanasia should be. Eu-thanasia literally means good death. Most people just want their animal todie of old age in their sleep – wewant that for all of our loved ones

but it’s not usually the case. In-

home euthanasia is the best we cando for our pets.”

Lap of Love Makes NewsLap of Love continues to grow

with more than 30 veterinarians infive different states; all with the com-mon goal to empower every ownerto care for their geriatric pets.

Drs. McVety and Gardner havespoken at the world's largest veteri-nary conferences as well as to localveterinarians and universities about

veterinary hospice, palliative care, and euthanasia. Lap of Love hasbeen featured in numerous newspa-pers, magazines, television news sta-tions, radio shows, and veterinaryrelated publications. You can findlinks to the many articles, press re-leases, interviews, and a newsclipvideo about Lap of Love atwww.LapofLove.com under the ‘Inthe News’ tab.

loss and pet euthanasia resources. You’ll find links to pet loss groupsand counselors. There is a sectiondedicated to ‘Quality of Life’ that de-tails what signs to look for when yourpets’ health has deteriorated to thepoint that they are suffering. At theend of a pet’s life they are often in alot of pain, may have no appetite, and may have problems with inconti-nence and mobility. Most times, petowners innately know when their petis no longer happy.

Lap of Love is Here to HelpLosing pet is never easy and it is

even more traumatic for the pet andthe owner when you have to trans-port them to the veterinary office – aplace they most likely would ratheravoid altogether. That is why manyvets in the area recommend Lap ofLove; they know that their clients arein good hands. “The vast majority ofcalls require me to be flexible andmost vets can’t afford the time awayfrom the clinic,” explains Dr.McVety.

You’ll know that you’ve done thevery best you can for your pet whenyou call Lap of Love. When hospicecare is needed, medication is provided

to keep the pet comfortable. “To beable to see the pet in their own sur-roundings is huge in end-of-life vet-erinary care,” says Dr. McVety. “Thewhole point of what I do is about thecomfort of the animal.”

There is no good way to lose apet, but Lap of Love is the best alter-native to a bad situation. Dr. McVetyand her colleagues will ensure thatyour pet is heavily sedated and willfeel as if they are just going to sleep, basking in the loving attention oftheir humans.

When a pet dies it affects every-one in the family, including otherpets. Lap of Love offers loving com-passion and tips on how to help yourfamily and your pets during thisgrieving period. Lap of Love doeseverything possible to make this timespecial.

“I always provide a paw print, hair clippings and a pet loss booklet,”says Dr. McVety. Eternal Pawprintsis the memorial booklet given out toher clients, and provides a place torecord the name of your pet and thedate of passing. Eternal Pawprintswas carefully constructed to honorthe life of special pets with poetry, special letters and tips on how to

honor the memory of your lostfriend. It also includes special lettersfrom Dr. McVety dealing with thesubject of canine grief and felinegrief.

Lap of Love also provides after-care services. The care of the pet’s re-mains is a very personal decision andis the pet owner’s alone to make.Owners may want to bury their ownpet, choose cremation (private orcommunal), or opt to bury their petin a pet cemetery.

No matter what the decision,Lap of Love providers are equipped

to transport a pet and will take careof cremation arrangements. You canalso purchase headstones and urnsdesigned for pets from Lap of Love,as well as items for pet senior care.

UF. A true Gator-fan, his office is fes-tively decorated to display the love ofhis favorite team. You’ll also find pic-tures of his beautiful family, his wifeJacque and their three daughters.

Get Wired In!Whether you are just gathering

information for someone in your fam-ily, actually getting braces or just tak-ing your child in for theirappointment, it’s easy to get “wiredin” at Albert Family Orthodontics! Itis clear that Dr. Albert values the timethat many parents spend at his officewaiting for their children, which iswhy he provides conveniences thatmany other offices don’t have, fromself-check-in options and free Wi-Fi,to freshly brewed Keurig Coffee andfreshly baked Otis Spunkmeyer choco-late chip cookies.

The entire crew will enjoy thewaiting area which is bright androomy. It’s actually the perfect get-away for parents who may enjoywatching a movie or the news on oneof the large flat-screen televisions whilerelaxing in one of the comfortable

seating areas. If relaxing with coffeeand cookies isn’t your thing, you andthe kids can play XBOX with Kinect!

Dr. Albert said, “It’s great howoften we see parents and the kidsjumping around and playing XBOXKinect. It’s cool.”

However cool the waiting area is,you won’t wait there too long becauseDr. Albert has recently streamlined thecheck-in process with touch screen pa-tient self-check-in pads and has addedadditional state-of-the-art dental chairsto shorten the wait time. Speaking ofdental chairs, these aren’t just yourrun-of-the-mill dental chairs. Dr. Al-bert’s patients get to lie down in Tem-pur-Pedic dental chairs and watch aflat screen television while they receivetheir treatment. Sign me up!

In order to make everything in hispractice run smoothly, he uses a com-puterized program called a “ChartList” that tracks the progress of eachpatient and makes everything easily ac-cessible for the doctor and his staff. He also has a program called “Dol-phin Aquarium” which is an amazingvirtual educating program that showspatients how to take care of theirbraces, use and change their rubberbands and even explains how to cor-rect an overbite. In fact, nearly all of

the things that can be done via tech-nology are done so, which gives Dr.Albert and his staff the chance to reallyspend more time with their patients, and their patients’ families.

Albert Family Orthodontics iscommitted to educating patients andtheir families, so they have developedan interactive website at www.albert-familyortho, which is a great way togather information, learn about thepractice, and to find out about its af-fordable payment options. There’s

even a way for parents or patients tolog in to their own account, view theirchart, see pictures of their progression, and to even make an appointment ormake a payment.

One parent said, "Our family ab-solutely loves Jeremy Albert and hisstaff! He has such a wonderful andfriendly demeanor with us and ourchildren. His office is beautiful andsuper clean with cool video games forthe kids to play on while they wait.

The actual patient rarely has to waitover five minutes before they're seen, but the video games are great for thesiblings who have to come along tothe appointments. There's also Wi-Fiaccess and great coffee for the parentsto access. [The] staff up front alwaysgreet you with a smile and are sopleasant to work with.”

Dr. Albert likes to see his futurepatients for a free consultation aroundthe age of seven or eight, so that hecan better educate the parents on whatto expect when they are teenagers andtheir permanent teeth come in. WhenDr. Albert works with families in thisway, everyone is prepared and ready togo when treatment begins.

Like technology, orthodontics hasevolved a great deal. Braces have moreoptions, are more comfortable, smallerthan in years past, and are affordablefor more people. Also, braces can getthe job done faster now than in yearspast. Where it might have taken a pa-tient five years to reach their desiredsmile a decade ago, the average lengthfor braces is now about two years. Also, Dr. Albert has a digital x-ray ma-chine that reduces radiation and pro-vides phenomenal images fordiagnosis.

The regular silver smile is alwaysavailable and effective, but they alsooffer “clear” or tooth-colored bracesthat really seem to make the bracesdisappear. Also, there is an alternativeto braces called Invisalign, which is aclear retainer-like plate or “aligner”that patients wear over their teeth, andusing computer imaging and molds ofthe patient’s teeth, a series of theseclear aligners are worn until the de-sired outcome is reached.

Dr. Albert says, “We have recentlyadded digital scanning technology forour patients seeking Invisalign treat-ment. Patients can now avoid the messor awkward feelings of dental impres-sions with our iTero digital orthodon-tic scanner - a technology which usesan intraoral camera wand that takesthousands of pictures which are digi-tally assimilated into 3D models of thepatient's teeth. The 3D models pro-vide highly accurate fit of the In-visalign aligners and the ability todigitally submit records to Invisalignwill shorten time for the turnaroundtime for aligners to be received.”

In it to Win it!Albert Family Orthodontics is re-

"CPS-3 will help us better understandwhat factors cause cancer, and once weknow that, we will be better equippedto prevent cancer."

This study is the latest in a seriesof American Cancer Society (ACS)studies that began in the 1950s andcollectively have involved millions ofvolunteer participants. Those studiesconfirmed the link between cigarettesmoking and lung cancer, demon-strated the link between larger waistsize and increased death rates fromcancer and other causes, and showedthe considerable impact of air pollu-tion on heart and lung conditions.

The current study, CPS-2, beganin 1982. The new study takes into ac-count changes in the average lifestyleand progress in the understanding ofcancer.

"Taking an hour or so every fewyears to fill out a survey, and poten-tially saving someone from being diag-nosed with cancer in the future, is acommitment that thousands of volun-teer participants have already made. We're looking for more like-mindedindividuals to join this effort that we

know will save lives and improve theoutlook for future generations," Patelsaid.

According to Ashley Jones, pro-gram specialist for the ACS, "This is aonce-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be apart of the research that may changethe course of cancer forever. Together,we have the power to save countlesslives and create a world with less can-cer and more birthdays! You may recall the story we didlast year about U.S. Marine CorpsCorporal Justin Gaertner, the Trinitymarine who suffered the loss of bothof his legs, and a severe injury to hisleft arm, when an improvised bombexploded beneath his feet inAfghanistan in November 2010.

Gaertner, now 23, and a 2007graduate of Mitchell High School inTrinity, went through intensive ther-apy with passionate determination andmotivation. While it normally takes aperson about six to nine months tolearn how to walk on artificial legs,Justin Gaertner did it in three. Justinnow has eight pairs of prosthetic legs.He can walk, surf and snowboard andrecently won silver medals in the 2012Warrior Games.

On Memorial Day, a day onwhich we honor those who served ourcountry, Justin was picked up at 10a.m. by The Florida Patriot GuardRiders, who escorted him in POW-MIA formation from his home in

Trinity tothe SunToyotadealershipin Holi-day. Hewasgreeted by a carnival atmosphere; thewhole dealership was transformed intoa display of military men and women, along with the public, all of whomsaluted Justin. The community eventtook place during the weekend of May25 through Memorial Day on May 28.

Then came the pièce de résis-tance—Joe Reth, general manager ofSun Toyota, presented Justin with thekeys to a new Toyota Tundra PlatinumCrewmax, especially fitted with handcontrols, step bars and other conven-iences by Sun Toyota. The total costfor the vehicle with its modifications is$60,000. This new truck will be lowerto the ground and easier to get intofrom a wheelchair. It will have handcontrols, dual climate control andbackup camera. The dealership is pick-ing up a good portion of the cost. Thetruck was missing parts on Memorial

Day, but the hope was to have it readyby the following Thursday for pickup.President and co-founder of theWounded Vets Association (WVA),Greg Amira, met Justin last year inNew York during the 9/11 tenth an-niversary observance. He was very im-

pressed with Justin’s attitude and de-termination, so when Toyota ap-proached Amira saying they wanted todo something special for a veteran onMemorial Day, he immediately knewJustin would be the perfect choice.(The WVA advocate for, and assist, wounded veterans dealing with physi-cal and psychological injuries sufferedon the battlefield).

Gaertner says he is planning to at-tend school at Florida State College inJacksonville, concentrating on home-land security and business. He hadwords of wisdom to recently injuredveterans. “There’s always going to besomeone there to help you.”Sun Toyota has opened a page on itswebsite, www.suntoyota.com/sol-dier.html where Justin’s story can beread and donations can be made to-wards the cost of his customizedvehicle.
