Caitlin Shannon is remarkable! She makes a difference to so manychildren in the Tampa Bay Area whoare hospitalized by giving them some-thing to smile about! Caitlin createdSparkle Power, a charity organizationthat gives goody bags filled with funitems to bring “the power of a littlesparkle” to children who really needsomething to lift their spirits. It is nosurprise that the 15-year-old was cho-sen by Trinity Family Physicians’ ownDr. Stephanie Eldridge and Dr. AmirShirmohammad as the second recipi-ent of the Tampa Bay Making A Dif-ference Award. Committed to theirpatients and active in the Tampa BayArea where they both grew up, thehusband-and-wife team of physiciansstarted the Tampa Bay Making A Dif-ference Award to bring recognition toindividuals who make a difference inthe lives of others locally.

Dr. “Shirmo” explains, “Thereare so many terrible things going onaround the world. Dr. Eldridge and Ijust felt that we have to do somethingto make people feel happy and good.”

With this Award, the doctors are ableto honor individuals who work to putsmiles on the faces of many, and theyhope you will feel inspired at hearingCaitlin’s story.

Caitlin suffered irreversible nervedamage during gall bladder surgerywhen she was just 13 years old. In andout of hospitals for two years whiledoctors searched for what was causingher excruciating pain, Caitlin bondedwith many children and their familiesand resolved to make a difference forthem. Wise beyond her years, sheshares, “When someone is first diag-nosed with a chronic illness or chronicpain, other people are so good aboutcoming to the hospital and being in-volved in the first weeks but then it al-ways dies down. I just wanted to dosomething to bring them happiness.”

Caitlin and her family started col-lecting markers and crayons, stickersand notepads, and other items tomake up Sparkle Power bags to give tochildren at local hospitals. SparklePower is proof that one young girlwith the right team behind her can do

a lot! Now Sparkle Power is a501(c)(3) non-profit that can con-tinue to bring happiness to little onesin the hospital. Caitlin’s mom Brookeis a powerhouse herself and she gaveher daughter some brilliant adviceworth sharing.

Brooke said, “I always talk to herabout building your team. We all havepeople who want to help and supportus – they are on our team – and it’simportant to build your team. Likeour guy at Sips Specialty CoffeeHouse [on Gunn Hwy.] – he sees uscoming and has our order ready everytime, and before I can say, ‘We’re in ahurry,’ he is handing out the coffeeand muffins. He is on our team.” Ithink I can speak for Dr. Shirmo andDr. Eldridge when I say that aftermeeting Caitlin, we all want to be onher team!

After multiple stays in the hospital,a local 15-year-old girl has used herexperience to recognize a need ofothers. While at the hospital, CaitlinShannon found herself dreading longdays in the hospital awaiting tests andprocedures and thought that manyother children in her position, orworse, may experience the same feel-ing. When thinking about her experi-ence, Caitlin, the oldest of four siblings, says, “When I was 13, I was in and outof the hospital and surgery centers fortwo years. It gave me an amazingoutlook.”

Caitlin has put her thoughts intoaction. While most 15-year-old girlsare busy trying to take the perfectselfie, Caitlin is helping others. Withthe support of her family, Caitlin hascreated a charity called Sparkle Power. The name is significant because“sparkle” represents goodies thatbrighten a patient’s day and “power”represents the power of a positive

attitude to help apatient recoverfaster. ThroughSparkle Power,Caitlin brings joy tochildren that findthemselves hospital-ized for extendedperiods of time bybringing them ‘carepackages’, that shesimply calls SparklePower Boxes. ASparkle Power Boxconsists of items tobanish hospitalroom boredom andincludes things like coloring books, crayons and even socks for cold hospitalrooms. Her inspiration for the boxescame from little things she receivedwhile in the hospital. She recalls,“When I would get a small gift, likeChapstick, a personal comfort item, orsomething small like we have in the

Sparkle Power goodie bags, it reallybrightens your day.”

Caitlin’s mom, Brooke Shannon,is in awe of her daughter’s level of phi-lanthropy. When asked about Caitlin’sinspiration to create Sparkle Power,Brooke said, “It really touched herheart when she saw other children

alone, bored or really not having any-thing to get them through the day andshe had her siblings and my husbandand I to visit and bring little goodies, but she noticed that some of the otherchildren in the hospital would be lonelyand sad. She thought maybe, once shewas feeling better, she could do some-

thing to help brighten these kids’ daysand maybe that would help them re-cover a little faster. That’s whatprompted her to come up with hercharity. Now that she’s feeling better, she wants to give back to her commu-nity.”

One look at this amazing younglady’s charity Instagram account,@sparklepoweroffical, and even thecoldest heart will begin to melt. View-ers are met with the smiling faces ofchildren that Caitlin has helped and thestories of hope and courage that eachchild possesses. It is clear to see thatCaitlin has a huge heart and caresdeeply for each and every child shehelps. Since security protocols at somehospitals make it difficult to deliver thepackages directly to patients, RonaldMcDonald House charities seemed likethe perfect way to get the care packagesin the hands of the families. RonaldMcDonald House provides no costhousing to families with children thatare long term or frequent patients atnearby hospitals.

Moved by Caitlin’s dedication tohelping others, a corporate conferencecompany called IQPC Exchange tooknotice of Sparkle Power. While its par-ent company, IQPC, is a worldwide

business, IQPC Exchange itself onlyhas two offices in the United States, including New York and one here inTampa. The company plans and hostsmultiple nationwide conferences forexecutives and thought leaders fromFortune 1000 companies.

IQPC Exchange has now joinedforces with Sparkle Power to help chil-dren and their families with extendedhospital stays. To take it a step further,IQPC Exchange has expanded the carepackages to include items for not onlythe patients, but for the families as well.Items include non-perishable fooditems, toys for siblings, toiletries andmore. IQPC Exchange has placed Jes-sica Yeshaiek in a lead position of theefforts and she could not be morethrilled. Jessica’s college sorority washeavily involved with RMH and she’secstatic to be involved with such an in-credible mix of caring organizations.IQPC Exchange has also begun bring-ing the items to the conferences andgetting the attending executives on-board with participating in creatingthe packages to give to the families. One of the attendees tweeted a photoof the packages and said how muchhe loved being a part of the ‘socialresponsibility.’

Yeshaiek said, “It is really heart-warming for us to have a chance to giveback to the Tampa Bay community. Weare proud to be part of an initiative tosupport Sparkle Power and RonaldMcDonald House by assembling theSparkle Power goodie bags at IQPCevents around the country, then deliv-ering them to The Ronald McDonaldHouse to give to deserving families.”

With the help of more companieslike IQPC Exchange, Caitlin andSparkle Power will be able to reachmore families. Sparkle Power, Inc. is a501(c)(3) non-profit company.

By Katie Thomas

Healthy skin translates to beauti-ful skin, something we all strive forand if you’re anything like me (andmany others) you know that healthyskin doesn’t always come easy. As ateen, my skin was clear, but along withadulthood came adult acne and I triedproduct after product with no satisfac-tion until recently when I received astarter kit of TréSkinRX products fromglowwithdoreen.com. Whether strug-gling with acne, wrinkles, uneven tex-ture, dry or dull skin, the hassle offinding a product that really works canbe frustrating and mistakes are costly, and believe me, I’d wasted my share ofmoney on products that didn’t work.

I wanted an all-natural productthat really works, that is simple to usewith simple ingredients, and one thatwould give my skin the healthy glow Idesired. Was that too much to ask?Lucky for me, Doreen Selby, CFO ofNeighborhood News & Lifestyles founda skin care line that delivers on itspromises! It all started with a Mother’sDay gift from her family; after a facial

with International Aesthetician An-nette McPhee, who owns Celtic DaySpa in Westchase, Doreen’s skin wastruly glowing. She says, “All the prod-ucts used during my facial were fromTréSkinRX. The facial itself was a re-laxing, transcendent experience but itwas the aftermath of the product thatreally blew me away. I immediately felta full change in my skin - it was soft, hydrated and had a glow to it that Ihadn’t seen in a long time.” Im-pressed, she brought home a two-week sample kit of the TréSkinRXbasic skin care products. “I wasamazed at the difference in my skinafter only a few days into using theproduct,” shares Doreen. “Upon fur-ther use, I realized the 100% organicaloe vera, the base ingredient of allTréSkinRX products, was literally heal-ing my skin. It reduced the inflamma-tion I had been experiencing, resultingin getting rid of my rosacea. Myfriends, family members and cowork-ers began complimenting my skin andasking what product I was using. Thatis when I decided to look deeper intothe reason TréSkinRX was working

better than any other product I hadever used before, because it was appar-ent to me and others that my skin wasundergoing a change for the better!”

Doreen did some research onlineand found that TréSkinRX productsare made with 100% organic pharma-ceutical grade aloe vera, which isproven to be anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, wound healing, therapeuticand an anesthetic. The molecular

structure of aloe is able to penetratethrough our skin, to hydrate it andbring pH levels back to normal.

TréSkinRX products were createdby Ahmed Abdullah, MD, who is aboard certified plastic and cosmeticsurgeon and a recognized expert onthe restorative and medicinal effects ofaloe vera. Dr. Abdullah is a member ofthe International Aloe Science Council(IASC) based in Dallas, Texas, and has

served on its board of directors. He isa pioneer of the practice of using phar-maceutical-grade aloe in plastic sur-gery for the treatment of skin damage.

“After researching and investigat-ing the TréSkinRX product line formyself and becoming fully aware ofthe science behind 100% organic aloevera, I knew I had to become a part ofthe TréSkinRX team to better sharethe amazing, transformative skin careline with people that I know,” saysDoreen. “Even though I have a fulltime career with Neighborhood News &Lifestyles, I find that Glow WithDoreen is a fun and rewarding busi-ness venture that has been very satisfy-ing. I like it that I am not required tocarry inventory or meet sales quotas. Ihave always enjoyed helping peopleand becoming a TréSkinRX LaunchManager has given me the ability tonot only help people with their skin, but with their confidence as well. Itjust feels good!”

My Personal Experience WithTréSkinRX

For some reason, I had beautifulclear skin as a teenager, but as soon asI turned 22, I started having problemswith adult acne from small red marks

on my cheeks to cystic under-the-skinpimples that really hurt. I have tried somany different skin care products fromall natural products, to over-the-counter acne washes and toners, todermatologist-prescribed topical treat-ments. I’ve known Doreen for overtwelve years and she has personallyseen me struggle with adult acne. Shethought TréSkinRX might help andgave me a trial kit just to try.

I could not believe the results. The inflammation in my cheeks wentaway after one week. After twoweeks, I was amazed at the differencein my skin. I even felt confidentenough to not wear concealer orfoundation!

I love the simplicity ofTréSkinRX. I still use the same prod-ucts that come in the two-week,four-product trial kit: PurifyingCleanser, EX3 Daily Renewing Exfo-liant, Triple Defense Day Moisturizerwith SPF 15, and Night RepairMoisturizer. Plus, I added the ClearSkin Blemish Control cream.

My favorite product is the EX3Daily Renewing Exfoliant, which iscomposed of certified organic phar-maceutical grade aloe vera, glycolicacid with an effective pH level of

2.1–2.3 and high potency vitamin C.To understand how EX3 works, youhave to first understand the ph scalein relation to skin and how it workswith glycolic acid - the lower the pH,the more acidic a product, ultimatelyresulting in being more effective atremoving keratin or dead skin cells.EX3 has the lowest effective pHavailable without a doctor’s officepeel. Dr. Abdullah realized that givenaloe’s superior anti-inflammatoryproperties, it seemed logical thatgenerous amounts of aloe pairedwith acid would ensure enough hy-drogen ions (acid) to dissolve deadskin layers while preventing a burn.Basically, EX3’s pH level of 2.1 – 2.3is nearly the same as that of an in-of-fice chemical peel (pH 2.0), but youcan do it yourself at home. EX3 uti-lizes pure pharmaceutical aloe andglycolic acid in conjunction with

Vitamin C, A and E, which serve asantioxidants.

The TréSkinRX product lineincludes options for people withsensitive skin, normal skin, dry skin, and there even is a line available forpeople suffering from acne.

My skin has never felt so goodand my confidence in my skin’shealth and appearance has never beenhigher. TréSkinRX is soon releasing amineral makeup line that will containno oils, talc, bismuth, oxychloride, fragrances, synthetic materials orchemicals – I’m excited about that!

One Angie’s List member writes,“I have used Yeager Flooring in thepast (about 4 years ago) to install hard-wood flooring in my living room, din-ing room and hallways and had afabulous experience. So when we de-cided to replace the carpet in one of

our bedrooms with hardwood floors,we knew we would only consider giv-ing the job to Jim Yeager and his com-pany. Jim is the ultimate professionaland he is THE VERY BEST at what hedoes. He’s the only vendor I’ve used inTampa that does WHAT he says hiscompany is going to do, WHEN theysay they’re going to do it and forHOW MUCH they are going to do it.You simply can’t get better than YeagerFlooring!”

Another Angie’s List member, who used Yeager and Co. to com-pletely remodel the master suite, shares,“This is the second major remodelingjob we have done with Yeager. We didour did our due diligence and met withsome other contractors obtaining esti-mates, but again chose to do business

with Yeager based upon the price, com-fort level with Yeager, and (most im-portantly) our satisfaction with theprevious job. We had a good idea ofwhat we wanted and worked with theirdesigner Melanie to fill in the details. She was great to work with and JimYeager also kept the project in line andon time. Jim Yeager clearly cares aboutthe quality of the finished project.”

want them to feel a sense of ‘wow’; wetry to make it so they actually enjoycoming to the dentist.”

Dr. Tran’s goal is to make his pa-tients feel so comfortable with comingto the dentist that they don’t procrasti-nate. Instead, he wants them to makecoming a priority, not only becausethey need to come, but because theyenjoy coming and interacting with theTEAM.

One patient writes, “EXCEL-LENT experience! I have anxiety aboutseeing dentists (as many people do),but the staff was very friendly and pro-fessional, the hygienist was extremelygentle and thorough. The office itselfwas very sanitary. Dr. Tran was friendlyand took the time to go over my x-raysand explain to me various aspects ofwhat was going on (which is rare for adentist to actually take time explainingas he did). I wasn't waiting long at all.Afterwards my teeth looked great! Iwould highly recommend this dentistto anyone who has anxiety or fear ofdentists, or just anyone who is lookingfor a quality dental practice to take yourfamily.”

By empowering his patients withthe proper information Dr. Tran givesthem the power to choose what is bestfor them. “When a patient is knowl-edgeable and educated they will makethe right decision for themselves,” saysDr. Tran. “I don’t try to force theminto anything. I am confident that if Ieducate them enough about their op-tions they will do what is right for theirdental health.”

What I enjoy most about Dr. Tranis how easy he is to talk to – even whensitting down for the interview it waslike I was talking with a long-timefriend. And, after reading all the posi-

tive testimonials online I can see why somany have chosen him as their dentist. Not only does he take the time to getto know his patients, but he is reallygood at communicating with them andkeeping them informed about theirdental health. Teeth are something alot of people take for granted, that isuntil they have a problem. Dr. Tran notonly teaches his patients the impor-tance of appreciating the teeth theyhave, but he also educates them onproper hygiene, as to avoid any prob-lems before they can ever arise.

“The thing I love most aboutdentistry is building relationships withthe patients,” says Dr. Tran. “I meetpeople from all walks of life, all withdifferent experiences and life stories. Ienjoy talking with my patients and get-ting to know them. You never knowwho is going to walk in or what the daywill bring.”

The TEAM at Mangrove BayDentistry understands that you have abusy schedule and that you don’t wantto make going to the dentist an all dayaffair, especially if you are just going infor minor work or a cleaning. Dr. Tranand his TEAM will always respect yourtime; they want to break the negativestigma that many people have aboutgoing to the dentist – thinking thatdentists always run late. Dr. Tran says,“We value our patients’ time and do

our best to stay on time. We don’t liketo make our patients wait and do ourbest to get you in and out as quickly aspossible while still offering the very bestin dental care.”
