#70 Fastway Couriers Falcon; Drivers Steve Richards and Dominic Storey

Results; Race 1: 7th, Race 2: 8th

Steve Richards was joined by his third diff erent co-driver in three round endurance series. It has been great to meet all of these young emerging talents on the NZ racing scene and the latest to join JMR, Dominic Storey certainly did not disappoint. Dominic was entering his fi rst ever Touring Car race at Ruapuna after a short career in single seaters in NZ and Europe. Dom had only done a handful of laps at Taupo before we left to go down south. With Steve Richards there to show him the way, Dominic worked well to come up to speed in the two practice sessions before qualifying. It’s fair to say that the competition was the toughest it was all season. Every team and driver knew their cars well by now and so Dominic had a diffi cult job to enter the co-driver qualifying against the other regulars. With just his fi rst taste of new tyres Dom acquitted himself well to qualify 15th of the 20 drivers. Steve jumped in and did a great job to go P7, only 0.5 off the pole time. On Sunday the #70 Fastway Couriers Falcon lined up for the fi rst race using Steve’s grid position of sev-enth. As it normally does at Ruapuna, the fi rst corner “funnelling” eff ect caused drama ahead of Steve and he had to take avoiding action - into Greg Murphy! The front splitter was damaged but Steve just pressed on from the tail of the fi eld and stormed through to eventually be in the lead due to other cars pit stopping and his great speed. Dom then took the wheel for his fi rst ever tin-top race and did an outstanding job to eventually fi nish seventh. A great result for the team and the big crowd of supporters around the circuit.

After that experience and the hour break it was time for race two, also over 53 laps. This time it was Dom’s turn to start from his position - 15th. He made a steady start and then had a constant run to hand the car over in a similar position to Steve, yet nice and straight. Steve then charged on with worn tyres before getting the safety car period they needed and coming in to pit. The JMR team performed an excellent stop and put fresh tyres on the #70 machine so Steve could charge back into the race. After late race drama, Steve had caught up to the pack and eventually fi nished a close eighth. Two top-ten’s for the Fastway Couriers Falcon was an excellent result for the weekend. Well done to Dominic on his debut drive and to Steve for his excellent driving all season.

#47 Blackwoods Protector Falcon; Drivers John McIntyre and Jono Lester

Results; DNS (accident practice) third overall in V8 SuperTourer Championship

We had high hopes heading into the round at the only track we had won on, in Easter just holding off Fabian Coulthard. Our early pace was strong and we worked on getting Jono up to speed. In session two we were just starting to make progress with the set-up when I experienced a brake failure at the fastest part of the track, turn two. Many of you will have seen the resulting crash on TV, YouTube or our Facebook site. It was the fi rst time in my racing career that I have been injured in an accident. I have fi nally realised I am NOT bulletproof, that has taken a whole 35 years! But I am very lucky that the safety of the cars and the driving equipment is so good, it could have been much worse. I have had an MRI(A) scan and have seen a surgeon who thinks my shoulder will heal on its own, in time for the fi rst round on Feb 16-17.

For now we are all working hard to prepare for an exciting second season of V8 SuperTourers. The car will be repaired in mid/late January, ready for testing early February.

I’d like to thank everyone for their support this season. To have won the fi rst ever title on off er (Sprint) in the most com-petitive series ever held in NZ for V8s is a great accomplishment. To have held onto third overall in the Championship keeps JMR’s record intact. Six full V8 championships contested and we have fi nished on the podium in every year (includ-ing three wins). That is something for everyone to be proud of.

There is a lot of excitement for next year and plenty of information to share with you all in the next few weeks. Enjoy the Xmas and New Year holidays, drive safely and we will do it all again next year!
