As you read this I will be on my way to race in the Sandown 500 with Will Davison in Car #6 for Ford Performance Racing. So it really is the season of endurance and as a team we have just completed our first endurance race at Taupo on September 1-2, the Fathers Day 400. Before I talk about how the event went for JMR, it’s important to share my thoughts on how successful the first endurance race for V8 SuperTourers was. Just seven months ago V 8SuperTourers debuted at Hampton Downs with 16 cars and a great field of drivers. The cars were overheating, the gearboxes giv-ing issues but aside from that the racing was incredible.

At Taupo last weekend we saw the finest field of touring car drivers in NZ since the Wellington street race in the 1990’s. The V8 SuperTourers field had grown to 20 cars and the majority had uprated gearboxes and cooling systems to cope with longer races, it worked. To think what V8 SuperTourers have achieved in such a short time is astounding. For the majority of the cars to complete 400kms of racing without trouble was a great tribute to the teams and the category for sorting out some of the technical issues. Although we had to split the races up in to two so that we could safely refuel, the event still very much felt like an endurance event. In 2013 expect to see competition re-fuelling and there will be no need for breaks in-between the races. 

The event for JMR started early in the week on Tuesday when Jono Lester (co-driver #47) and Will Bamber (co-driver #556) arrived in Taupo. We wanted everyone there as early as possible so we could all gel together as a team and work on the specifics of endurance racing, like setting up the belts/seats in the race cars. On Wednesday we went onto the Taupo circuit to run-in all of our new compo-nents (gearbox, diff, axles, bearings, drive flanges, brake rotors and more). The co-drivers did all of this work while I spent the morning driving the old NZV8 (our previous championship winning car) with Glenn Inkster, who drives this car in the Challenge Cup Series.

Podium start to V8 SuperTourer enduro series cont...Our morning went to plan and the boys got through the program. Steve Richards arrived from Melbourne that evening and we made a plan to sort out all of the belts/seats and driver comfort areas on Thursday. Steve Richards was great at this; he showed Will and Jono exactly how to set the belts up. This means putting bungee cord around the belts so that the belts flick up and out of you way when you release them. Then for the in-coming driver the belts are sitting up so that they are not sat on or get stuck behind your back. Thursday flew by. Jono had #47 sorted for me while I was busy sorting out other parts of the weekend.

Friday was the final day for getting the cars ready, setting up the pits and the whole team (18 of us) were all in Taupo on Friday by midday. One of the major jobs is the fitting and purging of the tyres. With 30 slicks and a possible 32 wet tyres for both cars, the team must have all of these tyres marked and ready to go in the right place when the weekend starts.

One of the highlights of the event was a parade held on Friday night in the Taupo town centre. We had a Police escort to guide us down the main street as we drove the race cars towards the ‘pub street’ in Taupo. Once there, the drivers all performed a signing session which was very popular. At the end of the signing session, the JMR #47 team and the Greg Murphy #51 Team had a pit-stop race. WE WON! It was a lot of fun and a great way to kick off the weekend for the teams and the fans. 

Saturday was incredibly busy. We had two hour long practice sessions and we decided to give the co-drivers as much running in the cars as possible. We focused on running the cars with a full load of fuel (approx. 116 litres) and on used tyres. Our theory here was to give our co-drivers a feel for the cars on full tanks because it changes the balance quite a lot. Steve and I have experienced this many times with V8Supercar duties, but the young guys hadn’t done this before. This extra full tank running proved to be very beneficial in the races. Our practice pace was actually very good considering our strategy to run on full tanks and the co-drivers were coming up to speed nicely. Near the end of the practice sessions some of our competitors fitted new tyres to get an idea of where they were for qualifying. I knew we were in trouble with our outright speed when Jonathan Webb managed a 1m28.9, faster than JMR had ever gone at Taupo in our testing previously. Both cars and all four drivers struggled in qualifying which was held in 2x20 minute sessions. Jono and Will were in the first session and Will did a great job to come in 12th, Jono was disappointed to be in 16th. In fairness to both of them the cars just weren’t quick enough for anything better than that.

Steve and I went into the main qualifying making a couple of changes to the cars due to the feedback of Will and Jono. I managed eighth and Steve 10th. Neither of us felt the ‘new’ tyre gain, when the tyre really bites into the circuit and you can turn the car into the corners faster, brake later and get on the throttle earlier. There have only been a few tracks that we have been to that and have our cars work for qualifying (more to come on this).

As we finished our day at the track I was actually quite confident that we would have a reasonable race car for the two 56 lap races the next day. We finished our day off hosting some of our sponsors at the JMR race shop, now that the showroom and trophy room have been completed. It was a nice way to finish off a hectic day (for the drivers). The team however stayed late into the night perfecting their pit stop/wheel changing strategies and techniques. We were going to need them.

Sunday dawned fine and the whole team were at the track early (7am) to start pit stop practice and driver changes. As a team we decided early that if it was dry we would change the two outside tyres (right hand) to give us more pace later in the races. So the team got down to some very impressive time for the wheel changes (around 20 seconds). The drivers had their changes down to 18 seconds and we were looking good.

On these endurance race days, there is so much for the team to do to prepare for the races. They must have the cars prepared, cleaned, set-up and ready well in advance of the race. The fuel has to be topped up to its maximum and then they need to prepare the garages with all of our spare parts in case we need them during the race. 

The weather was fantastic over the whole weekend and the crowd on Sunday was as big as I have seen at Taupo since the A1GP. We had decided that the lead drivers (Steve and I) would start race one which under the rules meant we would finish the second race too. Will and Jono needed to be in the cars no later than lap 35 in race one and Steve and I had to be in the cars no later than lap 35 in race two. The races themselves ended up being like a sprint race, but the exception was that the pit stop could either make or break your result. 

We ran slightly different strategies with #556 pitting first after a great stint from Richo, handing over to Will Bamber. On fresh outside tyres and with a great pit stop Will moved through the field to finish seventh. I drove the longest stint of anyone (35 laps) and we managed to pit under safety car. The wheels were changed just before I was ready to let the car down off the jacks and Jono was away. He re-joined in fourth and then drove brilliantly to record another podium for the team, finishing a strong third.

In-between the two races we had just 20 minutes to remove all the fuel left (about a cup-full) and put in 116 litres, prep the cars, talk to the engineers about any subtle changes. I was so proud of the team; they turned both cars around and presented them in a clean state with three minutes to go, well done! For this race with Will and Jono driving, again they would have fresh tyres to start on. We decided to change our strategy in the break and we would only change right side tyres if we pitted under safety car. Steve and I were comfortable to drive the whole stint on the original four tyres.

At the start both Will and Jono made incredible starts, with Will vaulting from 12th to fifth in the first corner!. Jono followed and was seventh from starting in 16th! As the race wore on, Will’s leg starting cramping and he started to lose some pace. Jono was really enjoying the stint and moved past #556 and was in fifth position for most of the stint. Will pitted early (lap 30) and Richo jumped in. Jono pitted on Lap 34 (we were waiting for a safety car). Will and Steve lost a little bit of time in the pit stop and so too did Jono and I. Steve came out in seventh place but struggled with the car balance to the end and finished ninth. I wondered what the tyres would be like after 35 laps and no rest, but they were actually very good. I immediately set about catching and passing Richard Moore for third. I gave Richard Moore a pretty hard time in the closing laps; to his credit he drove extremely well but just locked up at turn one letting me by for third.

So for our first endurance race to have both cars in the top-10 was a credit to everyone. The pit stops were amazing from the crew; the cars were reliable and well presented. The drivers need to sharpen up a bit more on our changes, but that will come with more practice. The series has found that some cars have interpreted the rules in such a way that they have a big advantage in handling. We have struggled with handling all year because we have been playing it by the book. There will be new clarifications to come out in the next weeks that will clarify the rules and I believe will help us find that gap in qualifying and race pace that we have lacked all year.

Despite all of that I am still leading the championship, but remember that on corrected points (drop your worst round) we are only 99 points ahead of Scott McLaughlin. We will need to lift our game for Pukekohe, a circuit that JMR have won on many times before. Right now the cars are being serviced in Taupo in preparation for testing in October. Co-driver’s perspective: Jono Lester #47

What an introduction to V8 touring car racing! Arriving on Tuesday to make the most of slotting into the JMR team environment and getting a heap of driver change and pit stop practice in proved key when John and I had the weighty task of two come-from-behind podiums on race day.

There’s still a bit to work on in all areas, and as a team we will band together to in particular ensure our qualifying pace at Pukekohe is as good as our long distance pace.

Roll on Pukekohe, and two spots higher for the #47!

Co-driver’s perspective: Will Bamber #556

The JMR team and I spent months preparing for the Father’s Day 400 so it was no surprise that the weekend just flew by. Debuting in the V8 SuperTourers against some of the world’s best touring car drivers was a tall order and surreal to say the least; I had to pinch myself a few times that’s for sure.

To finish sixth in my first ever endurance event was amazing and to work alongside a legend like Steve Richards and the JMR team was a pleasure. My weekend highlight would have to be coming back through the field in race one to finish seventh while along the way having to deal with a ‘dead’ leg and cramping.

John warned me it was going to be intense out there but that was an understatement! I’m counting down the days to Pukekohe, I can’t wait to get back out there.

Double podium for McIntyre and Lester in V8 SuperTourer enduro; two top tens for Richards and BamberV8 SuperTourers’ sprint champion John McIntyre and co-driver Jono Lester secured third place in both of the long distance races which comprised the inaugural V8 SuperTourer endur-ance event in Taupo on 2 September.

McIntyre and Lester, supported by impeccable teamwork from the John McIntyre Racing crew, turned their starting positions of sixth in race one and 13th in race two into two hard-fought and well-deserved third places in the #47 Blackwoods Protector Falcon.

Team-mates Steve Richards and William Bamber in the #556 CRC Motornews.co.nz Falcon also improved on their qualifying positions to finish the two 56-lap races in seventh and ninth respectively.

“Overall it was an excellent weekend for John McIntyre Racing,” says McIntyre, the team’s owner and lead driver, from Nelson.

“The speed with either car wasn’t quite there, but they were reliable and strong, we had solid race pace and our young co-drivers did a great job. With #47, we definitely had the fastest crew, who changed both right hand tyres during our pit stop in less time than it took for me and Jono to swap places.

“We really nailed the race strategy and I’m delighted with the overall results.”

Lester, the 22-year-old international race driver formerly of Palmerston North and now residing in Auckland, was rapt to finish his first event with JMR so well.

“I was quietly confident we could get a better result than our qualifying times indicated and it’s terrific to then secure two podium finishes. The last few laps of race two when John was battling with Richard Moore for third place were really intense.”

The endurance event format saw V8 SuperTourer teams complete two 60 minute practice sessions on Saturday, then there were separate qualifying sessions for co-drivers and lead driv-ers. Originally scheduled to be 60 laps each, the two races on Sunday were shortened to 56 laps each when officials reviewed likely fuel usage versus tank capacity. Each driver had to start one race each with the start order determined by relative qualifying times.

JMR’s strategy saw McIntyre and Richards start the first race – McIntyre gridded up sixth, Richards ninth.

By the time Richards pitted on lap 32 he was up to fifth before handing over to 18-year-old former Suzuki Swift Cup champion William Bamber in his first-ever V8 touring car race. Around the usual re-shuffling of race order once all the pit stops were complete, Bamber took advantage of the opportunity to pass a number of cars to bring the #556 JMR Falcon home in sev-enth place.

“You couldn’t ask for a better introduction to V8 SuperTourers,” says Bamber, formally of Wanganui and now based in Auckland. “Driving with Steve, with his massive experience and two Bathurst wins, it’s been brilliant.”

Meanwhile, now in the lead, McIntyre held off pitting until the last possible lap and was able to take advantage of the safety car being called out on the same lap. With tyres holding up well, McIntyre was delighted to see Lester do a great job to wrap up the race with third place behind the pairings of Jack Perkins and Nick Cassidy, and Scott McLaughlin and Jonathan Webb.

Lester said: “John made my job really easy and I just drove nice and straight to bring it home.”

After the lunchtime break and a refuelling interval, Bamber and Lester gridded up in 11th and 13th respectively.

Bamber explains what came next. “Everyone went wide into turn one and with Jono behind me, we took an inside line. Then Andre Heimgartner’s engine blew right on the corner and several were caught up in that, so we both improved seven places coming out of turn one!”

McIntyre praised the young co-drivers. “They both showed really good judgement and Jono really set us up for another podium with #47 with the way he came through the first part of race two. Again we were in the lead when we pitted. When I came out, I was determined to catch Richard Moore just in front of me – I had to think about balancing pace against how much fuel was left, so to finish with a second podium position was excellent.”

Finishing race two in ninth, Richards comments: “We have little improvements to make – the race pace is not quite there in order for us to get both cars in the top three, but to finish the weekend with both cars damage-free, Jono and Will doing a great job and really good teamwork, we’re in a strong position looking at the final two enduros this season.”

Next up for the team is a similar endurance race format at Pukekohe Park Raceway over the weekend of 26-28 October, then the season finale in Christchurch 23 to 25 November.

The next round of the V8SuperTourer series will be at one of my favourite tracks, Pukekohe. As many of you will know, next year Pukekohe will again host the V8Supercars and with that event will come many changes to the track layout. Our race though will be held on the very fast and original layout, as it currently stands. The V8STs will all be fitted with 3.0 ratio final drives and we expect to reach 280km/h+ down the famous back straight. It will be interesting to compare our lap times against what the V8Supercars had previously achieved; can a V8ST actually lap quicker than a V8Supercar?

The race weekend will be the best ‘show’ that V8ST have put on in their short history. There will be action and racing on all three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be seven races on Saturday and eight on Sunday. The support classes are headlined by the Central Muscle Cars with their 30 plus classic field. Other supports include the V8Challenge Cup, Honda Cup and a new class called Extreme Sports and GT. These cars must be able to lap Pukekohe in less than 60 seconds and that is basically the main rule. Look to see fire breathing TraNZam Cars and Sport GT Porsches.

All tickets to the venue include a ticket to see The Feelers Play live at the track on Saturday night! So bring your deck chairs and blankets for what will be a great concert to finish off Satur-day’s racing.

V8 SuperTourers are delighted to announce that rock group the Feelers will headline on the V8ST Super Stage on the evening of Saturday October 27th at the Pukekohe circuit for its International 500 event.

The Feelers are promising one of their best live shows yet, so fans can rest assured they will be revisiting all their biggest hits with a new found enthusiasm! The band has sold a quarter of a million albums, has five multi-platinum albums, three Number One albums, seven Number One singles and has enjoyed more radio air-play than any other New Zealand artist or band since radio stats began in 1999!

This weekend sees the start of my two race endurance campaign with Ford Perform-ance Racing. I will be driving in the Sandown 500 in Melbourne as co-driver for Will Davison. This is my best chance yet of winning a V8Supercar endurance race. FPR have been one of the two form teams this season. Will and the #6 Trading Post Falcon has won six races thus far and he sits third in the points behind Whincup and Winterbot-tom. It will be great to be back at Sandown after three years of 500km races at Phillip Island. FPR are very strong at Sandown and we expect to be right up the front. Straight after Taupo I was testing the next day at Winton (rural Victoria) in preparation for Sand-own and Bathurst. We completed two days of testing in beautiful conditions and I was able to reacquaint myself with the #6 Falcon after a weekend in the JMR #47 Falcon. I really enjoyed the test on the second day and my lap times improved the whole time. My job as is usual - to bring the car back to Will in one piece and in a strong position. I can’t wait to get over there!
