Importance of using the correct institution

Using the correct institution for your film is very important because the institution choice has a great impact on how successful a film is going to be. The different ways it can affect your films are:

Reputation within the industry because if your institution is well known and is respected by the industry, then your film is due to be more successful and higher grossing. If your institution is unknown, then your film will be probably receive less promotion and it would be likely that the audience will not engage with the film as much, therefore smaller profits will be made. Reputation is vital, as this can easily influence audiences to watching you film and can help if the film is being promoted or getting critic reviews.

They provide funding to your film - a bigger film institution would be able to give you more money in order to make a film better and make it have more promotional methods in order for the film to be more successful. If institutions have bigger funding available, this can help with the production, distribution and the exhibition of a film. The better distributed the film is, the more likely you are to appeal to international audiences.

They need to be international: Institutions like Disney are international companies that dominate the film industry therefore they would be able to distribute your film in many countries across the world. Companies like Disney make films that appeal to all with ideas that are Universal across the globe so it is important that your institution have international success, that way your film will be higher grossing.

Importance of using the correct institution

The audience have an expectation of each institution, for example if a film is by Warner Bros will carry certain expectations due to previous films made by them. The audience would have more than likely seen a film made by them before so they would be more interested in watching a new film by them because they have a good reputation amongst the industry and audience and audiences expect high grossing films by them as they offer escapism.

Genre association: it is important for your film that the institution has had experience in producing a similar film to the one you are making so they have experience in budget, casting, production and picking conventions . For example if you have a thriller film and your institution is Disney, then automatically the audience will think it is a kids film which will make the audience have the wrong interpretation of your film.

Who would I choose to distribute my thriller and why?

I would choose the ‘Warner Brothers’ institution because of their previous history in making similar films and because they can budget my film as they are a popular company which dominate in the film industry.

Also, as they are so well known they can invest in famous actors and actresses which will help make my film more successful as more people would watch it with A-List stars.

Also, there budget could help the location of the film and other film production equipment to ensure it is filmed with the best technology. Their promotion methods will also be better because they are so popular, for example my film could have TV adverts, YouTube trailers and bus adverts. In that way my film can spread to an audience internationally that loves and respects the thriller genre.

Furthermore the popular movies “IT”(1990) and “V for Vendetta”(2006) were both made under Warner Bros and they have many similarities to my film. Some examples are the trade marketed Guy Fawkes mask and a psychopath like antagonist. These films have good reputations so if people liked them, they are more likely to watch my film.

Similarities to films Warner Bros have produced

One film that is similar to our film is ‘V for Vendetta’. It has similar themes as our film such as violence and death and we also use the mask that they use in the film to create mystery and thrill for the audience.

The other film that is similar to our film is ‘IT the Clown’ as it shows the antagonist being a psychopath and he kills people and uses violence towards them. My character and this character are both represented as unusual and creepy characters.

Being created by ‘Warner Bros’ would mean more people will have good expectations for this film and could also lead to more people going to watch the film and give it a good rating. This is because Warner Bros have a good history and reputation of making Blockbuster films.
