Audience Research
For my audience research I have decided to complete a questionnaire about film
trailers. I have also researched how popular different trailers of the same genre
are by using the statistics available to you on Youtube.
The genre of film trailer that I am creating is going to be a Sci-Fi / Horror /
Thriller. Therefore the three trailers I am going to get statistics from will be:
28 Days Later
Apollo 18
Super 8
I have chosen these film trailers as they all fit the category of Sci-fi / Horror /
Thriller, what I am doing.
I have split the Youtube statistics for each trailer up into two different categories: Audience
Views
The ‘Audience’ category will give me an idea of what the age and gender is of the
majority of people who are watching similar trailers, it will also give me an idea
of where people are watching similar genres of trailer.
The ‘Views’ category will give me the popularity of the trailer, the amount of
views, how many people like it and how many people have the trailer in their
favourites.
I am going to start with 28 Days Later.
As you can see from the screenshot above, 28 Days Later is the most popular
with males aged 18-24, followed by males aged 25-34 and then by males aged
13-17. The trailer is very popular in the UK, the USA and Alaska, then followed by
Canada, Australia and Sweden. Around the rest of the world, it is relatively
popular but not as high as the 6 countries I have already mentioned.

As you can see above, when the video was first posted on Youtube it was not
very popular, in 2 years in only managed to gain around 100,000 views. But since
then it has been more popular, in 18 months it has gained an additional 500,000
views taking the view count to just over 600,000.
It also shows you that 489 people have liked the trailer since it has been on
Youtube and only 35 people have disliked it. The trailer has also been added to
323 people’s Youtube favourites indicating t hat it is quite popular.
The next trailer I will be looking at is Apollo 18.
Much like 28 Days Later, Apollo 18 is more popular with males of around the
same ages. It is most popular with males aged 13-17, followed by males aged 18-
24 and then males aged 25-34. The trailer is most popular in the USA and Alaska
(much like 28 Days Later) but not as popular in the UK. The popularity is then
followed by Canada, Australia, Brazil and Finland. It appears to be reasonably
popular throughout the rest of the world however, it is not very popular at all in
China in comparison to 28 Days Later.

Apollo 18 has had less views than 28 Days Later because Apollo 18 is a recent
film, however the popularity is almost completely opposite to 28 Days Later in
the sense that it was very popular at the start and has slowly become less viewed
over time. It gained almost 200,000 views in the first month and since then the
views have slowly increased up to 275,000. Apollo 18 appears much more
popular than 28 Days Later as it has 1454 likes. The favourites statistic is verysimilar to the amount of views in the same respect that it was added to peoples
favourites quite a lot initially but has been added a lot less since the start.
The final trailer I will be looking at is Super 8.
Identical to the other two trailers, they are most viewed by males, however
unlike the other two, it is more popular with older males. The most popular
being males aged 35-44, followed by males aged 25-34 and then by males aged
45-54. Super 8 appears to be a lot more popular all over the world in comparisonto 28 Days Later and Apollo 18. If you look at the screenshot, you can see that it
is most popular in the USA, the UK and Alaska (like the other two) followed by
Canada, Australia, Sweden, Spain and the Ukraine. Also it appears to be quite
popular throughout the rest of the world, unlike the other two trailers.
Super 8 is definitely the most popular trailer of the three, with over 5.5 million
views in under one year. Unlike the other two trailers, Super 8 has had a steady
increase in views since the video was added to Youtube. It was uploaded in the
middle of March, and by June it had already had 2 million views. Since then, thepopularity has increased slightly and has had an additional 3.5 million views in

the 4 months from June to October. Backing up the popularity of Super 8 is the
amount of likes and favourites it has had in comparison to the other two trailers.
The trailer has had 6654 likes and has been added to over three thousand users
favourites on Youtube.
The most popular age and gender out of the three trailers were: Males
Aged 18-24 and 25-34
And the trailers were most popular in the USA, Alaska and the UK.
This will be my target market.
