the Art on Main Committee will host 30 new

artists in the 52nd annual Art on Main Festi-

val, set for October 1 and 2 along Hender-

sonville’s historic Main Street. Hours are

10am – 5pm both days.

Among the new artists this year are Larry

Brown (wood) of Spruce Pine, Caroline Kwas

(oils) of Spring Hill, Florida, and Rachel

Wilder (jewelry) of Asheville. Larry’s “studio

furniture” reflects his 34 years of experience

in his dramatic yet elegant work. Caroline

Kwas paints

with oils on

birch panels

with inspiration

coming from

the beaches of

Montauk, NY.

Rachel Wilder

incorporates

sterling silver,

gold-filled,

brass and oxi-

dized copper

into her pieces

of jewelry

drawing inspi-

Live Art Demonstrations will take place in

front of the Historic Court House on Main

Street on both days and will include spin-

ning, weaving and felting provided by the

Heritage Weavers of Henderson County

(they will even have sheep and a bunny as

part of their educational presentation!);

wheel-thrown and hand built pottery; paint-

ing in several different styles including

watercolor and oils; blacksmithing, a raku fir-

ing and an iron pour by students from Blue

Ridge Community College; jewelry making;

gourd art and clay sculpting; stained glass

by the WNC Glass Crafters; and woodturning

by Southern Highland Craft Guild member,

Joe Ruminski. Artists will take time to

explain their processes and motivation and

will have finished work for sale.

“Festival-goers will have the chance to learn

about how an artist goes about the creative

process, and to see it happen first hand,” said

artist and Art on Main co-chair Kim Adams.

These demonstrations help to bring the

artist’s work directly to the public.”

Art on Main, in its 52nd year, is one of the

region’s most popular outdoor arts festivals.

Artists from the southeast region and

beyond will be participating in the 2011 Art

on Main, exhibiting a mix of contemporary

and traditional fine art and crafts.

Art on Main is presented by The Arts Council

of Henderson County with major support

Chimney maintenance and a fireplaceinspection can make the differencebetween warm safety and drafty danger.

Your fireplace, the most low-tech piece ofequipment in your house, may seem like asimple load-and-light operation, butignoring annual maintenance can impairits performance, leading to heated air(and dollars) blowing out the chimney,harmful smoke inside, and possibly even achimney fire.

The average number of annual U.S. homefires caused by fireplace, chimney, andchimney connectors between 2003 and2005 was 25,100, and the average costsfor those fires was $126.1 million, based

on the most recentstatistics from theChimney Safety Insti-tute of America.That's roughly $5,024in damage per home.Annual chimneymaintenanceremoves flammablecreosote, the majorcause of chimneyfires, and identifiesother performanceproblems.

Is it worth the $205fee, two-hour servicecall, and all that ashpossibly blackeningyour carpet? Here'swhat you need toknow to decide.

Annual inspectionskeep flames burningright

Creosote-com-bustible, tar-likedroplets-is a naturalbyproduct of burningwood. The morewood you burn, thewetter or greener thewood, and the moreoften you restrict air-flow by keeping yourfireplace doors closedor your damper bare-

ly open, the more creosote is produced.

Soot build-up, while not flammable, canhamper venting. One half-inch of soot canrestrict airflow 17% in a masonry chimneyand 30% in a factory-built unit, accordingto the CSIA (http://www.csia.org). Soot isalso aggressively acidic and can damagethe inside of your chimney.

The more creosote and soot, the morelikely you are to see signs of chimney fire-loud popping, dense smoke, or evenflames shooting out the top of your chim-ney into the sky. Chimney fires damagethe structure of your chimney and canprovide a route for the fire to jump to theframe of your house.

"If the chimney is properly maintained,you'll never have a chimney fire," saysAshley Eldridge, the education director of

the CSIA.

The best way to ensure your chimneyisn't an oil slick waiting to ignite? Get itinspected.

Three inspection levels let you choosewhat you need

A level-one inspection includes a visualcheck of the fireplace and chimney with-out any special equipment or climbing upon the roof. The inspector comes to yourhouse with a flashlight, looks for damage,obstructions, creosote build-up, and soot,and tells you if you need a sweep. If so,he'll grab his brushes, extension poles,and vacuum, and do it on the spot.

"You should have it inspected every yearto determine if it needs to be swept. Anannual inspection will also cover you ifthe neighbor's children have thrown abasketball in it, or a bird has built a nest,"says Eldridge.

A level one typically runs about $125. Adda sweep, and you're talking another $80,or about $205 for both services, accordingto CSIA.

Consider a level-two inspection if you'veexperienced a dramatic weather event,like a tornado or hurricane; if you've madea major change to your fireplace; orbought a new house. This includes a level-one investigation, plus the inspector'stime to visit the roof, attic, and crawlspace in search of disrepair. It concludeswith a sweep, if necessary, and informa-tion on what repair is needed. The pricewill depend on the situation.

A level three inspection is considered"destructive and intrusive" and can resem-ble a demolition job. It may involve tear-ing down and rebuilding walls and yourchimney, and is usually done after a chim-ney fire. The cost will depend on the situa-tion.

Small steps can improve your fireplace'sefficiency

Besides the annual sweep, improve yourfireplace's functioning with responsibleuse.

•Only burn dry, cured wood-logsthat have been split, stacked, and driedfor eight to 12 months. Cover your logpile on top, but leave the sides open forair flow. Hardwoods such as hickory, whiteoak, beech, sugar maple, and white ash

burn longest, though dry firewood is more important than thespecies. Less dense woods like spruce or white pine burn well if suf-ficiently dry, but you'll need to add more wood to your fire moreoften, according to CSIA.

•Wood, only wood! Crates, lumber, construction scraps,painted wood, or other treated wood releases chemicals into yourhome, compromising your air quality. Log starters are fine for get-ting your fire going, but they burn very hot; generally only use oneat a time.

•Close your damper when not using the fireplace to preventwarm indoor air-and the dollars you're spending to heat it-fromrushing up the chimney.

•On a factory-built, prefab wood-burning fireplace, keepbifold glass doors open when burning a fire to allow heat to getinto the room.

•Have a chimney cap installed to prevent objects, rain, andsnow from falling into your chimney and to reduce downdrafts. Thecaps have side vents so smoke escapes. A chimney sweep usuallyprovides and can install a stainless steel cap, which is better than agalvanized metal one available at most home improvement retailersbecause it won't rust, says Anthony Drago, manager of Ashleigh'sHearth and Home in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

•Replace a poorly sealing damper to prevent heat loss. "Youcan get a top-mounted damper that functions as a rain cap, too, animprovement over the traditional damper because it provides atighter closure," says CSIA's Eldridge.

•Install carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors inyour house-near the fireplace as well as in bedroom areas.

•If you burn more than three cords of wood annually, getyour chimney cleaned twice a year. A cord is 4-feet high, by 4-feetwide, by 8-feet long, or the amount that would fill two full-size pick-up trucks.

•To burn fire safely, build it slowly, adding more wood as itheats and keeping your damper completely open to increase drawin the early stages. Burn the fire hot, at least occasionally-with thedamper all the way open to help prevent smoke from lingering thefireplace and creosote from developing.

By the way, fireplaces aren't officially rated for energy efficiencybecause they're so varied. Depending on the source of information,they can be 10% to 30% efficient in converting fuel to heat.

No inspection will turn a masonry or factory-built fireplace into afurnace, but it can improve efficiency somewhat, decrease theamount of heating dollars you're sending up the chimney, andincrease your enjoyment of your hearth time by reducing smoke. Ifa sweeping prevents a chimney fire, you're talking about the differ-ence between another ordinary January day, and the potential lossof your home, or even life.

Naturally, if you're paying 6% for your mortgage and you canrefinance at 5%, you're gonna do it. Although cutting yourmonthly payment remains an important motive, there are atleast five other reasons to consider a mortgage refinance, forlong-term savings and convenience.

1. Change your mortgage termIf you decrease the term of your mortgage in a refinance bygoing from a 30-year to a 15-year, you'll pay a lower interestrate and shorten your total interest costs. You'll build homeequity more quickly, and pay off your loan sooner, eventhough your monthly payments go up.

2. Move from an adjustable rate to a fixed rateARMs offer low introductory rates, but they also offer longperiods of uncertainty that make it hard to budget. It makessense in a mortgage refinance to go from an ARM to a fixed-rate loan during a low-interest rate environment. You'll getemotional security and your rate won't fluctuate with chang-ing economic conditions.

3. Take out cashWith a cash-out mortgage refinance, you can turn an intangi-ble asset-accumulated home equity-into a tangible one-cash.It makes sense for a project that will generate long-term ben-efits, like a home improvement or funding a child's collegeeducation . However, don't do it for frivolous reasons. Unlessyou're extremely disciplined, you could find yourself in evendeeper debt.

4. Consolidate two mortgagesWhen interest rates are low, a mortgage refinance lets youconsolidate your main mortgage and an outstanding homeequity loan to realize a lower overall monthly payment. Plus,you'll have only one mortgage payment to make each month.

5. Recover from divorceIf your home is jointly owned with your soon-to-be ex-spouse,a mortgage refinance will turn a joint obligation into theresponsibility of the person keeping the home. Nothing ismore frustrating than tracking down a former spouse whodoesn't keep up with his or her end of the mortgage pay-ment.

Lay the groundworkIf one of these reasons resonates with you, contact your cur-rent lender to see if it'll offer you preferred rates or reducedclosing costs on a mortgage refinance. But don't assume thecurrent lender is best: Leave no stone unturned by searchingfor lenders online and calling community banks and localcredit unions.

No matter which lender you choose, a mortgage refinance forthe right reasons can save you lots of money-and that's thebest reason of all.

Surprise: Your utility may offer big-time

energy rebates to offset the cost of ener-

gy-efficient retrofits.

When it comes to managing your house-

hold energy costs , you'd think your elec-

tric and gas utility would be the last

place to look for help. After all, why

would they pay you to use less energy?

Because regulations now give them

financial rewards for meeting energy-

efficiency goals.

Even though it costs about one-third to

one-fourth less to save a kilowatt hour

through conservation than it does to

build, fuel, and operate a new power

plant, utilities resisted conservation pro-

grams for years, says Martin Kushler, sen-

ior fellow with the American Council for

an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

Instead, they opted to finance new

plants over the long term and pass along

the costs to all of us as higher rates-until

regulators stepped in.

What energy rebates are available

through your utility?

Some are small-say, a $20 rebate after

you purchase a programmable thermo-

stat (http://www.houselogic.com/arti-

into the thousands of dollars, especially

for expensive items such as solar panels

your house and tell you exactly which

energy-efficient retrofits will be cost-

effective for you.

Some utilities:

•Offer free in-home energy evalu-

ations performed by utility staff.

•Give a rebate against the price

of an energy audit conducted by an

independent pro.

•Rebate part of the cost of any

recommended improvements. In Califor-

nia, for example, Pacific Gas & Electric

offers up to $4,000 in rebates for any

household that receives an energy audit,

implements the recommended changes,

and achieves a 15% reduction or more in

energy consumption.

The auditor will advise you on the poten-

tial cost of recommended improvements

vs. the money they'll save you on your

energy bills. If your utility rebates part of

the cost of those improvements, the

return on your investment will come

much faster.

It's definitely worth checking out-espe-

cially if the audit is free or at a reduced

cost.
