NOSwimming pools have been a saving grace for the residents of Linmeyer, Risana, South Hills, Tulisa Park and surrounding areas who have them, but those who do not have had to rely on water tankers from Joburg Water and the City of

Johannesburg Emergency Services. Twice-daily queues of residents holding buckets became a common sight in Delmas Street, South Hills the past week.Since Friday 19 September to 26 September, these residents did not have water, because of the problems Rand Water experienced at their pump sites, which resulted in water not flowing into the reservoirs at the normal rate. The Eikenhof pump site provides water to the South Hills reservoir, which in turn supplies all the above areas.

Last Tuesday over 40 residents of Linmeyer and the surrounding areas gathered in Michael Street, Linmeyer to voice their concerns to several news stations. Among these was the placement of the water tanker at the water tower in South Hills, which made it very difficult for residents, especially pensioners, to transport buckets of water back to their homes.

The community of Ward 57 was invited to a Heritage Day celebration on 24 September by Clr Fay Chame. The recently elected councillor told tame TIMES that she wanted to include the community in her celebration as she recently became the ward councillor and really wants to create a true sense of community in her ward.The event took place at South Rand Recreation Centre. Community members

had a chance to speak about their different cultures; various dance groups from the suburbs that fall into Ward 57 showcased their dancing skills; the youth took part in a modelling competition and Linda Kok from Moffatview CPF explained to everyone what measures are being taking to keep the area safe. The MC for the event was Labelz D’glamore.Clr Chame catered for 300 residents with

Fortunately these complaints were heard, and another tanker was brought to Risana Road.Two questions constantly on the lips of disgruntled residents, however, were “Why were we not warned before?” and “What are their back-up plans in times of crisis?” Other complaints were that vagrants and non-residents took advantage of the water tankers, emptying them quickly; and that the water from the tanker had a bad odour, raising suspicions that the tanker was not cleaned before being filled with water.Ralf Bittkau, DA spokesperson for water, joined the residents’

protest and explained that the problem did not lie with Joburg Water but rather with Rand Water, as their pump stations were not working due to a faulty transformer, which meant that water could not be pumped to residents’ homes. “There is water - the problem is just getting the water to the people,” Bittkau said. He added that it had been said that it would take City Power 14 days to replace the faulty transformer. Bittkau said that Rand Water felt it had no responsibility towards the people and was passing the buck on to Johannesburg Water.When tame TIMES phoned Justice Mohale from Rand Water, he declined to answer

the questions posed, as the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, was on her way to visit Rand Water Central Depot. Thereafter he was not available for comment. According to a Department of Water Affairs media release, however, “The Rand Water Board has reported that the main

cause of the interruptions could be pinned down to the ageing infrastructure, vandalism as well as power supply shortage to pump water upstream into reservoirs to supply the affected communities.” The water finally came on at 14:00 this past Saturday.

I would just like to thank the readers who personally sent emails with kind comments regarding last week’s column. I am very privileged to be able to write openly about my faith and belief in Jesus Christ and the way I see it is that I have been blessed with this platform and will use it to the best of my ability to share the love I receive from my Friend Jesus.If that is my one and only purpose in life - to spread the good news - I am okay with that and I will serve my Father faithfully. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.” How can I fix my faults or avoid offending someone if I don’t know what I have done wrong?My Home Group leader said that if I am doing something that is not of Christ, the Holy Spirit will prompt me and show me and once again I welcome that, as the last thing I want to do is to be a bad ambassador for Christ.However, God is still - and always will be – good, as in these situations He prepares you for what is coming. On Monday I experienced Nianell performing her latest songs from her album Just Be and I urge people who like inspirational music to buy this CD as it is beautiful, truthful and speaks to the soul. The song Just Be says: “So be the miracle you want to see, be all the love you want to feel, and make it real - see the magic of what you can be, and believing is what will set you free, free to be who you are meant to be.” Each song is a constant reminder to stand firm for what I believe in. I do not say that I have it all figured out and that I do not have faults of my own – as, if I were perfect, I would not need Christ in my life. I have many faults and I invite Christ into my life to fix these faults and change me for His purposes.In the end, it does not matter who shares the good news of Jesus Christ as long as someone is sharing it.

FOAMY WATER: What the Molotswana stream looked liked two week ago

Residents of Chelverton Avenue, Mondeor woke up to a terrible stench on 22 September and when they took a closer look at the Molotswana stream that runs through the same street - it was covered with foam. “The pollution in and around this stream is unacceptable. This stream flows into the Klipriver Nature Reserve,” a frustrated resident said.The same resident told tame TIMES, “Last year in August I contracted the E. coli after we had a picnic next to the Bloubosspruit in the Nature Reserve. I was admitted to hospital and was extremely sick. I didn’t have any contact with the water. We only had a picnic next to the river on the grass in the Reserve. On 10 August 2012 it was announced on MNet’s KYKNET that E. coli has been found in the Klipriver. We immediately alerted my doctor in Mondeor that the bacterium is in the Klipriver Nature Reserve.”The resident is concerned as many people, including school learners and residents have contact with this stream and the Klipriver. “The Gr R to Gr 3 learners from Hartford College regularly have a clean-up in this stream. Who is going to take responsibility if one of these kids contracts the E. coli?”The resident added that there is not even one frog or crab in the stream. “Where are the small fish that once were found in this stream?”tame TIMES requested comment from Joburg City Parks. Jenny Moodley of JHB City Parks said, “We will have to refer the request to JHB Water and the CoJ’s Environmental Department for comment.” tame TIMES has done this and is awaiting comment. Several types of E. coli exist as part of the normal flora of the human gut and have many beneficial functions, such as the production of vitamin K2. They also prevent harmful bacteria, known as pathogenic bacteria, from establishing themselves in the intestine. Most E. coli strains pose no harm to human health, except for serotype O157:H7, which can cause food poisoning in humans and can become life-threatening.The patient will typically experience symptoms within three to four days after being exposed to the bacteria; however, in some cases they may appear within a day or a week later. INFECTED INDIvIDuAlS MAY HAvE:• Abdominal pain - typically, the first symptom is severe abdominal cramping that comes on suddenly.• Diarrhea - a few hours after sudden abdominal pains, the patient typically has watery diarrhea. A day later there may be bright red bloody stools, caused by sores in the intestines.• Nausea• Vomiting - note that many patients who become ill may not vomit• Fever - note that many infected people may not have a fever• Fatigue - diarrhoea causes loss of fluids and electrolytes (dehydration), making the patient feel sick and tired.

Residents who fall in the Moffatview SAPS policing precinct feel that the police station situated at 75 Outspan Road, Moffatview needs to be renovated and made bigger. “The station is just too small and cannot accommodate all the residents that fall in the precinct. The residents, and especially the criminals, are not taking the station seriously due to this - and this doesn’t help as the station has already been labelled due to some officers being crooked and taking bribes from drug dealers and prostitutes,” a resident told tame TIMES. He added that, although certain detectives and officers are trying their best, their efforts are not being seen.When tame TIMES asked Moffatview SAPS management if there are any plans to make the station bigger, the response was, “Yes, the Provincial Office is in the process of making plans.” However, no date was given.

The station was first a satellite station but became a fully fledged station in April 2012. Currently, it has 108 police officers who are originally from different units at other stations, although most of them came from Booysens SAPS. Colonel Mfanangana Shadrack Khoza heads up the station as Station Commander, with 28 loyal years to the police force under his belt. According to the resident who spoke to tame TIMES, “The station needs a new Client Service Centre, new cells and proper offices, not the rent-a-homes that are now being used, and at least another 20 SAPS officers should be employed there.”There are several prefab offices at the back of the permanent building like the ones used at Booysens SAPS station. “If Mondeor SAPS station can get a renovation, why can’t Moffatview also get one?” the resident asked.Share your thoughts on this article with [email protected]

Khoza joined the police in 1986 at Hammanskraal College. He was posted to Brixton SAPS as a student and promoted to the rank of Constable in the same year. In1990 he became Sergeant Khoza and, in 1993, a Warrant Officer (Inspector). He served at Brixton for 12 years, then became a Captain and was transferred to Alexandra SAPS.In 2000 he was promoted to Superintendent level (Lt Colonel) and was placed at Sandton SAPS as Head of Vispol. In 2005 he became Colonel Khoza and in 2009 he was transferred to Booysens SAPS. In 2012 he was transferred to Moffatview SAPS as the Station Commander.

The Lusito Land AGM took place recently at the Lusito School and the Executive Committee was elected. The Executive Committee for 2014/2015 is as follows: Chairman- Sergio Aquino, 1st Vice Chairman - Demetrio Sousa, 2nd Vice Chairman - Tony da Mota, Treasurer - Isabel Cadilhe, Secretary - Koos van der Schyff, Public Relations - Noemia Contente and Project Coordinator - Jose Barreto.The Administrative Council2014/2015 was also appointed and consists of eight members: Deolinda Molina, Leandro Cadilhe, Danielle dos Santos, Angelique da Silva, Jose da Silva, Jose Miranda, Kayla Miranda and Nicholas Cadenhead. Deolinda Molina and the Lusito staff including Sara Gomes, Janet Schneider and Gloria Gkickas shared an insightful talk on the new inclusive learning programme that has been implemented whereby the learners are divided into different groups and taught skills which involve, health and beauty, bead work, arts and crafts, sensory integration, life orientation, garden and vegetable processing as well as alternative communication.

Last week the National Credit Regulator (NCR) released the Consumer Credit Market Report (CCMR) and the Credit Bureau Monitor (CBM), which are based on the data submitted to the NCR by registered credit providers and credit bureaus respectively. These reports cover credit market information up to June 2014. New credit extended for mortgages grew by R2.3 billion (7.6%) when compared to the previous quarter and R3.08 billion (10.25%) when compared to the quarter ended June 2013. The value of the mortgages debtor’s book was R834 billion as at June 2014, which amounted to 53.18% of the total debtor’s book. A total of 90.62% of the mortgage repayments were up to date as at June 2014. Nomsa

Motshegare, CEO of the NCR, commended the latest trends in consumers seeking assets building credit. She encouraged consumers to know their credit status, to live within their means and to use credit responsibly. The total value of new credit granted increased from R105.60 billion for the quarter ended March 2014 to R107.19 billion for the quarter ended June 2014, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 1.50%. There was an overall quarter-on-quarter growth for all credit types with the exception of “developmental” credit, which declined. The number of applications received for credit increased by 696,000 from 9.67 million in March 2014 to 10.37 million in June 2014, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 7.21%.

The banks’ share of the total outstanding consumer credit as at June 2014 was R1.33 trillion (84.60%), retailers was R36.29 billion (2.31%), non-bank vehicle financiers stood at R58.45 billion (3.72%), and “other credit providers,” at R146.92 billion (9.36%). Other credit providers consist primarily of pension-backed lenders, insurers, non-bank mortgage lenders and securitised debt. Comparisons in this release that are “quarter-on-quarter” refer to a comparison between the March 2014 and June 2014 quarters, and “year-on-year” refers to a comparison between the June 2013 and June 2014 quarters.

The following were some of the most significant trends observed in terms of credit granted for the quarter ended June 2014: • The value of new mortgages granted increased by 7.60% quarter-on-quarter from R30.84 billion to R33.18 billion.• Secured credit, which is dominated by vehicle finance, increased from R35.35 billion for March 2014 to R35.76 billion for June 2014, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 1.14%.• Credit facilities, consisting mainly of credit cards, store cards and bank overdrafts, had an increase of 2.31% quarter-on- quarter from R16.22 billion to R16.59 billion.• Unsecured credit increased from R18.82 billion for March 2014 to R19.32 billion for June 2014, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 2.64%. • Short-term credit increased from R1.23 billion for the quarter ended March 2014 to R1.29 billion for the quarter ended June 2014, an increase of 4.75%.• Developmental credit had a quarter-on- quarter decrease of 66.53% from R 3.14 billion to R 1.05 billion.

As at June 2014, the total outstanding consumer credit balances (or gross debtor’s book) was R1.57 trillion, representing a quarter-on-quarter growth of 1.16% and a year-on-year growth of 6.96%. The trends for outstanding balances for the quarter ended June 2014 were as follows:

• The mortgages debtor’s book increased from R823.33 billion for the quarter ended March 2014 to R834.37 billion for the quarter ended June 2014, an increase

of 1.34%.• The secured debtor’s book, which is dominated by vehicle finance, increased from R331.72 billion for March 2014 to R340.36 billion for June 2014, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 2.60%.• The credit facilities debtor’s book, which consists mainly of credit cards, store cards and bank overdrafts, had a quarter-on-quarter increase of 2.45% from R190.58 billion to R195.26 billion.• The unsecured credit debtor’s book decreased from R172.97 billion for March 2014 to R172.20 billion for June 2014, a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 0.45%. • The short-term credit debtor’s book decreased from R707.34 million for the quarter ended March 2014 to R704.99 million for the quarter ended June 2014, a decrease of 0.33%.• The developmental credit debtor’s book decreased from R31.67 billion for the quarter ended March 2014 to R26.10 billion for the quarter ended June 2014, an decrease of 17.58%.

I loved Journey to 30 Something this week. It is so amazing when you give your life to Jesus, as you see everything different from the way the world’s standards are. We are not from this world, only passing through to eternal bliss to see Jesus Face to face.

This letter is a response to the Rape is a male problem article.Perhaps I am angry because I am someone who took part in the Slutwalk, or maybe it is the fact that I am a human being (despite what Mrs Yates said) who is completely shocked that someone would even write an article of this nature as she did.The Slutwalk was created to stop people blaming the victims. Maybe people who have been raped live with the shame their whole lives because they know that people will ask them, “What were you wearing? Where you drunk? Did you seduce him and then say no?” Men, women, and even children take part in the walk, screaming different chants, such as, “No means No; Yes means Yes.” Many people watched as we took to the streets with our posters and signs held high, informing people that rape is not all right. The buzz you feel afterwards is something no one can explain so it saddens me when I read an article that degrades the Slutwalk and those who take part in it.The first thing that caught my attention in the article was the fact that it was titled Rape is a male problem. Women are not the only ones who are raped, and this is acknowledged and mentioned at the Slutwalk. Rape is everyone’s problem, even if it has not directly affected you in anyway. We cannot place it on one gender as it can happen to everyone. The women who take part in the Slutwalk are not giving up their dignity as Mrs Yates claims. Many women dress in casual clothing. Dress style does not equate dignity. There is no right/wrong way to dress, and if there is, it is only because old men with power put those standards there. Many women who were dressed in jeans and a T-shirt have been raped. Children and

babies have been raped. Men have been raped. Even nuns have been raped. Should we blame all those people for their outfits as well, or is it only okay to do so when the skirt is above the knee?It is incorrect to claim the Slutwalk is just about women, since a lot of men take part in the event as well. A group of men do the whole walk in six-inch heels and tight short dresses, something only three or four women do. I believe Mrs Yates should first take part in the Slutwalk and see what it is all about before she claims that woman are voluntarily giving up their dignity. The most shocking part of the article is the last paragraph which states, “They could choose to portray themselves as human beings with hearts, souls and minds as well as bodies; but, instead they attract male sight-seers with all the wrong intentions.” Since when does taking a stand against something mean we are not human beings?Many of the people who take part in the Slutwalk have either been raped, know someone who has been raped or just want to take a stand against the injustice of rape. We cannot sit back and allow someone to insult people who are taking a stand against something that is a growing problem. I fail to understand how screaming “No means No” and “It’s a dress not a yes,” with signs that show why we are protesting will “attract male sight-seers with all the wrong intentions.” This event is worldwide and it will continue to grow each year. We have to join together to fight this continuous battle against not only rapists, but also against those who put down the fight. If being human and having dignity means wearing long dresses and keeping quiet when an injustice occurs, then I will continue to have no dignity and not be a human.

the 2012 miniskirt march in Joburg attracted many male comments (since removed) on the “hotness” of the marchers – missing the whole point of the campaign, which was to fight rape. Traditionally, the month of September is a difficult time at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS). Owing to preliminary examinations and preparations towards the final quarter of the year, blood drives at schools and universities are generally not possible at this time of year. This, together with poor turnouts at companies and organisational blood drives, has placed immense pressure on the blood stock levels.“SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of 5 days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival. However, at the moment we have only 1,6 days of blood stock available, and we are concerned that, should this continue, we are looking at a major crisis as we head towards the festive season,” says Vanessa Raju, Communications Manager of

SANBS.It is only with the help of selfless blood donors that SANBS is able to rectify this situation. They have implemented a cut-back approach, according to which they are not fully able to meet requests by doctors. For example, if a doctor requests four units of blood, SANBS may only be able to offer two units, and this approach will continue until the blood stocks recover. SANBS is encouraging all regular donors and those who have made a conscious decision to join this cause of “saving lives” not to miss out on their next donation date. This is also a reminder to all donors who selflessly donated blood on Mandela Day to remember that they are due to donate again and to continue making every day a Mandela Day.Members of the public who meet the minimum requirements to give the gift of life by becoming regular donors are urged to visit SANBS as soon as they possibly can.

The SAPS JHB Cluster (Booysens, Mondeor, Moffatview, Langlaagte, Sophiatown, JHB Central, Fairlands and Brixton SAPS) celebrated Heritage Day a day early on 23 September where each station cooked a different cultural meal and enjoyed sharing the meal together.

The departments involved were Communications, Social Crime Prevention and Women’s Network. Various cultures and traditional dress were showcased in a beautiful mirage of colour with the joyous celebration starting in the parking lot before the event started.

Mondeor resident, Pierre Brydges (47), was shot in the chest and killed while he and his family were braaiing on Heritage Day at his residence in Bellefield Road. At about 20:00 four men jumped over the wall and accosted the deceased and his family. “As the deceased stood up, one of the suspects shot the deceased in the chest. The suspects, all armed, searched the house and robbed them of jewels, cellphones, TVs and a white Nissan Maxima with a registration number of SCF 937 GP. The suspects were driving a Kombi, with an unknown registration number,” Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, spokeswoman for Mondeor SAPS said. A case of murder and armed robbery has been opened at Mondeor SAPS.Brydges leaves behind his fiancée Bronwyn Walton, his daughters Reo and Jordyn Brydges, his parents Annelore and Werner Kienhofer, his brothers Glen Brydges and

Frank Kienhofer and numerous close friends. The funeral will be at 15:00 on Friday 3 October at the St John Bosco Catholic. The Arts and Culture Committee of the Johannesburg Junior Council presents the Youth Exhibition at Vega School of Brand Leadership. Emilio Ziniades – Chairperson of the Arts and Culture Committee and a Grade 11 Learner at St John’s College explains, “The exhibition is an opportunity for the Youth of Johannesburg to express themselves through the medium of art.”The Youth Exhibition commenced from this past Saturday and runs till 4 October. Artworks from over 36 Johannesburg high schools will be exhibited. The other schools participating include: St John’s College; KES; Jeppe Boys; Reddham House – Bedfordview; Athlone Boys; Assumption Convent; Kingsmead College; Greenside High; Holy Rosary; Crawford College; Eden College, Redhill and St David’s.Lefika Art Therapy Centre will be adding to the exhibition with artworks from the youth that they assist. Lefika La Phodiso (The Rock of Holding) is Africa’s first psychoanalytically informed Community Art Counselling training centre. Their mission is to build capacity for

empathy by training groups of Community Art Counsellors dedicated to psychosocial transformation. Exhibits will be on sale through a silent auction with a minimum bid of R100. Proceeds from the sale of the artwork will go to the young artists, with a portion being donated to Lefika.The exhibition is open to the public daily from 10:00 to 16:00.

Theo Wassenaar Primary’s revue, centred on a fictional game show in the year 2030, introduced the crowd to a number of different eras and styles of music. The impres-sive dancing, which was supported by good music and great humour, created a wonderful show. The positive energy generated by the children’s dancing inspired many to clap and sing along and left everyone smiling.

Hoërskool President High School senior rugby team were crowned champions in the Roodepoort Rugby Club series for High Schools as President was victorious in each game.They started off the series with a good win against Bryanston High in the first match, scoring all the bonus points they could. President kept on winning in their pool games against HTS, Nic Diedericks and Kagiso, and then took the quarter-finals and the semi-finals in their stride, beating Fochville XV in that game. However, the night of the final was cold and harsh, and playing against Krugersdorp High School was an uphill battle. With the wind at their backs, President kept just ahead of KHS and went into half-time with an 8-5 lead.The second half was tough and defence was crucial.

President held out against wave after wave of KHS attacks. Their tiger-like defence paid off and President got out of their half, winning a penalty and the subsequent line-out on KHS’s 22-metre line.President’s forwards started a rolling maul, an unstoppable machine in the game. Winning another penalty and kicking it out on the 5-metre line, earned President a second rolling maul, and this time, even pulling it down could not stop President from barging over the KHS defensive line and scoring the second try of the match.With minutes left in the game, President held out for a final victory, winning the game 13-5. President was crowned the champions once more of the Roodepoort Series.

Mulbarton Remedial School celebrated their 10th anniversary on 23 September. The school day started with a special assembly, with all learners’ parents invited to attend and have a birthday cupcake courtesy of the school.In the assembly, learners shared why their school is special to them and each teacher and staff member received a thank you gift. Carnival City plays host to EFC 34 this Thursday night. Striking specialist Sibusiso “The Monster” Mdoko challenges the champion Leon “Iron Lion” Mynhardt for the lightweight title. Mdoko, the showman from Cape Town, is a crowd favourite with an impressive finishing record. “The Monster” has put away all three of his last opponents and has never been finished.Another must-see-clash is between Francois “Franaconda” Groenewald and the most dominant athlete in EFC history, Demarte “The Wolf” Pena, for EFC Gold. Boks sponsorship extended

Twenty four Resilience Gymnastic Club Artistic gymnasts (levels 1-3), took part in this year’s friendly competition as well as the Central Gauteng Regionals in Pretoria during August. After diligent training and hard work by coaches Roxanne van Herwaarde (owner), Tracy van Herwaarde and Angie Enslin, all the gymnasts did extremely well, with several gymnasts being placed in the top three in their levels and age groups.All the gymnasts qualified for the North Zone Competition (Mini-Nationals), which was held

in Kempton Park on 5 and 6 September. Bronze, Silver and Gold medals were awarded to all gymnasts according to their overall marks. Most of the Resilience gymnasts received gold medals for their performances and all will be awarded with their Provincial Colours. “We are extremely proud of this year’s success of our gymnasts. Thank you, gymnasts and coaches, for the extra hours put in and thank you to the parents for their support,” van Herwaarde said.

Aspen Nature Estate held a Heritage Day Soccer Tournament with three divisions - u/7 to u/8, u/11 to u/12 and u/13 to u/14 - competing. Alberton Soccer Club won the u/7 to u/8 and u/11 to u/12 divisions, and the Black Aces 2 won the u/13 to u/14 divisions.Second place went to the Rovers in the u/7 to u/8 division, Corinthians in the u/11 to u/12 division and the Black Aces 3 in the u/13 to u/14 group. The other teams that competed were Benoni Northerns, Bye, Aspen Rangers, Banero and Boksburg.The day was filled with fierce competition with families coming out to support the soccer players and to enjoy a day out in the African sun.Well done to all the teams that took part.
