Keep them Safe… Keep them in your yard!

Dear Candace, I was most distressed to learn that the Glenvista Shopping Centre has seen fit to get rid of the car guards and replace them with two security guards. I cannot understand how the centre imagines that one security guard can provide sufficient security on an entire floor of the underground parking lot. One late Wednesday afternoon my daughters arrived for gym to find no security guards anywhere in sight. Who is looking after not only our cars, but also the safety of two girls walking through a darkened, vacant parking garage? Who would notice if anything happened? They certainly don’t provide the services the car guards provided! They were always cheerful, polite and helpful. They helped me find a parking space, watched my car while I was away, helped me pack kilos of shopping into my car and guided me out of my parking space often, when I could not see

if anyone was coming while I was reversing out of my parking space. No security guard is going to help me lift a huge dog food packet into my boot. Last year, my daughter’s car was damaged by another shopper while she was shopping, and the car guard gave her a slip of paper with the registration nunmber of the car that had done the damage. How is that for service? These men are trying to make an honest living. The thought of so many more unemployed people on the street breaks my heart and I find it very difficult to consider shopping in the centre that has such a callous attitude to their fellow human beings. I don’t think I am willing to spend my money at the Glenvista Shopping Centre where the service I used to get in the parking area is no longer provided. Customer service is obviously not on their list of priorities!

Dear Editor, I am very pleased that you placed a positive article in the tame TIMES concerning taxi drivers. It would definitely be beneficial to do more of these types of articles. The taxi driver is quoted as saying: “It is usually not the taxi driver who wants to stop just anywhere, but his passengers who insist on being dropped at their exact destinations.” On numerous occasions I have suggested to my ward councillor and a JRA representative that clearly designated taxi shelters with markings on the road be put up in our area and that taxi drivers then only pick up passengers at these stops. This will alleviate the issue of taxis just stopping anywhere and endangering

people’s lives. Another issue that will make taxis and cars safer is that white, yellow and red lines need to be painted on the roads in order to designate lanes, parking, etc clearly. Main Street in Rosettenville is a clear example. I have also corresponded with both the ward councillor and JRA on this issue. Alas, neither the ward councillor or JRA have deemed it necessary to respond to these suggestions. Another issue is cars, buses, trucks, etc parked illegally – where are JMPD either to write tickets or have these vehicles towed away? I do not believe that JMPD are fulfilling their function in our City. They must be brought to task and make the roads safer for taxpayers!

So I mentioned in a previous editor’s letter that I would go birding over the Easter weekend; well, that didn’t happen. Instead, the long weekend was spent packing my entire life into boxes and hauling

all my possessions into my humble new abode – a

spacious two-bedroom one-bathroom townhouse unit on the

third floor. It has an exceptional view (which includes meandering

dassies on the rocks down below), and I’m extremely excited about turning my place into something special. Decor is a passion of mine, so it’s going to be fun.

SPEARHEADING CHANGEAs I pulled into the Spear family’s driveway and got out of my car I was greeted with a warm hug by Sheldon Spear, a 10-year- old boy with a big heart and a burning passion for making a difference. Spear is in Grade 5 at Waterstone College and has started his own campaign that deserves recognition – with the help of his m o m A d e l e , S p e a r

collects books and donates them to less fortunate schools. “I started this project because I used to donate my old books to my school library. I realised that my school has so many books and others do not have as many. This made me think about what a kid like me could do,” explains Spear. “I asked my mom if she would help me start Need2Read. I came up with the name because I love reading and want to share the joy of reading with other children,” he adds with enthusiasm. Need2Read collects books appropriate for babies to 16-year-olds. Spear explains that he started a Facebook page on his mom’s Facebook account on 31 August 2014 and called the project Need2Read.

The school is run by volunteers and is not state-funded so everything they have is from donations. I delivered more books to Lerato Educational Centre on 21 October 2014

as they are trying to start a library,” notes Spear. On 25 October 2014 Spear went with the youth group from his church, Alberton Methodist Church, to Chivirikani Primary School in Katlehong/Eden Park. “I donated books to the children who attend the monthly outreach programme. Many of them are from child-reared homes,” he says. On 28 October 2014 Spear delivered a few large boxes of books to Elethu Themba Public School. “We went after school and met the principal, Ms Joyce Mosala, and some of her teachers. They were so grateful for the books. They had been wanting to develop reading corners in the foundation phase classrooms. Our donation would help them

start this project,” notes Spear. Need2Read then received donations of brand new books. Spear decided to end the year with a drive to collect books for Christmas gifts. Need2Read donated books to a place of safety for abused and abandoned children called Granny’s House. His initial goal was to collect 1,000 children’s books by the end of 2014. He reached this goal on 22 October 2014 and a whopping 1,288 books were collected in 2014. “Friends and family have donated books. Glenanda Primary School learners donated hundreds of books. I have been overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity,” says Spear. Spear says that

his goal for 2015 is to collect 2,500 books before 01 July. He hopes to be able to share the joy of reading and help the needy kids in his community in a bigger way. In early February 2015 Need2Read donated several boxes to the new Glenvista Primary School. Mr King, the principal of Glenanda Primary School and Glenvista Primary School, was grateful for the books. “On 10 March 2015 I went with the staff of AMCARE and donated 15 boxes of books to Encochoyini Primary School in Phola Park. Their principal and head prefects stayed after school to receive the books for their library,” says Spear. When asked who is his favourite author, Spear excitedly said “Roald Dahl!” adding that his favourite book is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Apart from books, Spear is an avid hockey player and loves to experiment in his very own laboratory – a Wendy house in the back garden. Spear is a true all-rounder – he excels in sports and academics at school. His hero is Albert Einstein and his dream is either to become a professional hockey player or an inventor when he’s older. “Please contact Need2Read if you have good quality children’s books to donate, can assist in collecting books or if you know of a school in need of books,” urges Spear. At the recent monthly meeting for the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) Section 79 Economic Development Oversight Committee, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development, Councillor Ruby Motaung, informed the members that not only had the Chief Executive Officer of the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market, Simangele Sekgobela, been suspended for reasons related to non-performance, but so too has the Chief Financial Officer, Bafana Dhlamini. While the Democratic Alliance (DA) applauds the MMC’s remarks that the officials being suspended (with pay) is a concern for the City and that a speedy but thorough investigation into their non-performance is paramount, the DA is extremely concerned about what is happening at the highest managerial level at the market, that there is more than meets

the eye than just non-performance, and what damage this has caused to this otherwise previously ‘exemplary’ institution. The DA will be asking questions as to when the CoJ’s Department of Economic Development, under the auspices of which the Jo’burg Market falls, first became aware of the delinquencies of the two individuals which have been identified thus far, what investigation and/or corrective action was taken, if any, and whether there are other employees of the market who might be involved. It is difficult not to infer that the instance of ‘non-performance’ of two of the most senior members of the market, (and their suspensions), should and could very well relate to a significant breach of company policy, but, more so, to a major problem within the Jo’burg Market. The DA will be unrelenting in demanding answers to the questions we ask, and in obtaining satisfactory replies thereto.

The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra (JYO) Company’s annual Wozani concert promised to be slightly different this time, as the non-profi t event was presented in the style of an open day. Aimed at inspiring the youth to learn an orchestral instrument and join one of the orchestras, the four ensembles were showcased at the Wozani Block at the Wits Campus on 08 March. Though not held in a formal theatre and although visibility for the audience at the back was not at its best, the event still had a measure of professionalism in both appearance and performance, exceeding everyone’s expectations. The concert started with the intermediate winds conducted by Etienne Mecloen with the theme songs from Games of Thrones, Let It Go from Disney’s Frozen and Dynamite, sweeping up the audience and raising the rafters, setting the mood for the rest of the concert. The percussion rolled straight into an upbeat tribal composition which brought the Symphonic Wind Band (SWB) next on stage, who rocked the place with In the Zone from Earth, Wind and Fire, Blurred Lines, and Final Countdown, delighting the audience with an encore of Hey Brother. Following the SWB was the Intermediate Strings conducted by Kabelo Mothlomi on violin. Though a small group, the clear, soft, tear-jerking notes of the beautiful A Vow to Cherish and Danny Boy brought a reverent hush over the audience, proving that size does not matter. There was laughter and delighted ‘awww’s’ from the children sitting eagerly in the front. Pirates of the Caribbean pulsated with a rhythm that made one expect to see Jack Sparrow himself swagger in. With the audience’s feet tapping and hands clapping, it was no surprise they called for an encore. With a wave of the baton, the JYO concluded the concert with Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir. “The whole afternoon was a major success,” said Clayton, “We’ve never had an audience like that. The orchestras performed unbelievably well, and I hope we can do more like this in the future.” “It was brilliant,” Etienne Mecloen stated, “Amazing.” The excitement of the concert lingered long after it ended; the musicians were tired, but very happy. “It was exhausting,” Brian Moore, the principal cellist of the JYO, said, “But wow, such fun!” echoing everyone’s thoughts.

The Greenovate Awards – an exciting initiative launched by Growthpoint Properties and the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) – is set to inspire and encourage students of the built environment to discover, explore and invent ways to live more sustainably. It’s a competition where everyone wins. Werner van Antwerpen, Head of Utilities and Sustainability at South Africa’s largest JSE-listed REIT, Growthpoint Properties, explains the Greenovate Awards will introduce university students to the thinking behind green building and encourage them to take it forward, into a better, greener future. He says: “The built environment has a major impact on the environment and sustainability. With the Greenovate Awards, we want to recognise excellence and innovation in students’ own understanding of green principles for the built environment, across all aspects and disciplines. These aspiring young professionals have the potential to transform the way we live, with gentler impacts on the world around us. The Greenovate Awards will link environmental challenges to innovative thinking.” According to the GBCSA’s Chief Executive Officer Brian Wilkinson, besides igniting a new wave of green thinking, the aim of the programme is also to educate as many property, construction and quantity surveying third year and honours level students as possible in green building principles. This includes awareness of South Africa’s own Green Star SA rating system. Wilkinson notes: “We want to encourage students to learn about green building and sustainability early on in their careers. Investing in the youth is investing in our future. These are tomorrow’s leaders who will take the green building movement forward and ensure it continues to innovate and inspire. Essentially, we want them to enter the market as advocates for green building with a passion to create better, more sustainable, cities, towns and neighbourhoods. We’re excited at the incredible potential of this programme.” The awards programme will be set up and piloted at the University of Cape Town, University of the Witwatersrand and University of Pretoria, and the competition will test the interest of both students and faculty. Yet, just like their vision for environmentally innovative thinking, the founders see the awards programme becoming much, much bigger. If the pilot is successful, it will be rolled out to all universities in the country with the appropriate built environment faculties. For its inaugural

programme, organisers are not only looking for smart green thinking, but big thinking too. The challenge is for students to come up with ideas that would result in a research project that promotes a more sustainable built environment. These can be applied to any aspect of a building – design, development, planning, construction, materials – anything that makes the way we live greener and our environmental footprint lighter. Round one of the competition will take place internally and each university’s panel will select the top two projects submitted by student groups. “Collaboration between different departments will be allowed. We really hope to see students placed in an environment that requires the use of an integrated approach to problem solving with a shared vision across all disciplines in the built environment,” says van Antwerpen. Workshops with industry professionals will run up until September and the top six projects will be selected by mid November. The top six groups will then have the opportunity to present their projects to a panel of industry experts selected by the GBCSA and Growthpoint. A gala dinner and prize giving will be held on 26 November to announce the overall winners. The winning group will receive the prize of a big stack of greenbacks for their big green idea – R30,000 in cash. They’ll also get to present their research to leading built environment professionals at the annual GBCSA Green Building Convention. But the benefits of participation go far beyond the winning prize. The programme will also provide students with an opportunity to work with leading industry thinkers and possibly expose them to exciting employment opportunities. It will give leading companies direct access to real talent. Students will also be exposed to The Green Star SA Accredited Professional Programme (GSSA AP), which will be made available to entrants at a discounted student rate. “This includes a supported online course and a face-to-face workshop. On completion of the GSSA AP Programme, students will then have the choice to go ahead and complete the online exam and become a GSSA AP and though it is not compulsory, it is definitely recommended,” Wilkinson says. Importantly, everyone is a winner when innovation for a greener, healthier, more sustainable environment is nurtured, and this is exactly what the Greenovate Awards are setting out to do.

With strained power utility Eskom warning South Africans to expect load shedding for the next two years at least, many homeowners and businesses are hurriedly purchasing generators. While “gennies” are fast becoming a necessity in South African homes, their installation in complexes is the subject of heated debate, according to sectional title property specialist Marina Constas, a director of BBM Attorneys. But, she stresses, if trustees and homeowners arm themselves with the facts, a generator could be an invaluable acquisition for every sectional title development aiming

to adapt to load shedding. Constas’s first word of advice is that it is preferable to have one generator for the complex as a whole, rather than permitting individual owners to have their own generators. Once this has been agreed upon, a point in question is whether a complex buying a generator is making a “necessary” or a “luxurious” improvement to the development. Different resolutions are required for each, according to the Sectional Titles Act. “If it is a luxurious improvement, then a unanimous resolution is required in terms of Management Rule 33 (1),” Constas explains. “If the generator is seen as a necessary improvement, then a special resolution is required and the procedure set out in Management Rule

33 (2) must be complied with. Among the stipulations is that owners must receive all the costs at a special general meeting. They will need everything in front of them before they are able to decide, and take the special resolution,” she notes. “A special levy may then be imposed for the generator’s service and maintenance.” Constas believes that in view of the security risks posed by electricity outages and load shedding, an immovable generator is a necessity. She elaborates: “A complex’s security systems are generally dependent on the electricity supply. Electric fencing, alarms, electric

gates and intercoms may be affected if there is a power outage, and homeowners put at risk. For this reason, a generator should, in most instances, be viewed as a necessary improvement to the sectional title scheme.” When it comes to generators, however, not all units are created equal, and in a complex in particular, the noise emitted is a significant consideration. Constas recommends that trustees should investigate all options and attempt to purchase the generator with the lowest noise levels. “The generator should be stored where it will cause the least amount of nuisance to all homeowners in the scheme, and where the fumes will not affect the owners,” she concludes.

Two precious Eastern White Pelican hatchlings were welcomed at the Montecasino Bird Gardens on 11 March. One hatched with its proud parents looking on, and the other one hatched after being artificially incubated by Bird Gardens’ staff. The second egg was pulled from the nest for artificial incubation due to the generally low survival rate of the second chick. This is usually due to starvation of the younger chick, after domination by the older chick. According to Deidre Jameson, Property Manager of Montecasino, Eastern White Pelican numbers are declining due to overfishing in certain areas, as well as to their being exploited for their meat. Their skin is turned into leather and their pouches used for tobacco bags. Breeding in captivity is thus becoming more important, but it is notoriously difficult and quite rare. Their eggs are often infertile or break during incubation. “To our knowledge, Montecasino Bird Gardens is the only institution in South Africa that is breeding these birds in captivity and we are thrilled with our new hatchlings. The pelicans bred for the first time in 2013, and one chick was parent-raised. The Bird Gardens have 13 Eastern White Pelicans–12 can be seen on the main dam, including the newly-hatched chick. The chicks will be sexed using blood samples for DNA sexing when older. The chick that is being hand-reared is currently on five feeds per day. The diet consists of small pieces of fish and fluids to keep it hydrated. “We will give the

chicks names when we know their sex and when the chicks’ personalities are a bit more evident,” adds Jameson. The Eastern White Pelican, also known as the Great White Pelican, is a huge bird with a wingspan ranging from 2.26m to 3.60m. It comes from Africa, Asia and Europe, breeding in swamps and shallow lakes and feeding mainly on fish. Breeding in Africa is usually all year round and the young are cared for by both parents. The Montecasino Bird Gardens was established in 2001 as an extension of the property’s diverse entertainment offering. Since then, the tranquil Gardens has been home to about 179 species of birds, 43 species of reptiles, 16 species of mammals, and 12 amphibians. Over the years it has become established as an educational and rehabilitation centre, moving up to a new level in conservation when its breeding facility was established in May 2010 and again late last year when it was awarded African Association of Zoos and Aquariums (PAAZA) accreditation, seeing Montecasino join an elite group of just seven other institutional PAAZA members responsible for the African region within the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. PAAZA accreditation is the highest possible recognition that a living animal institution can achieve in Africa and not all institutions that apply for accreditation receive it. Prior to the award being made, a comprehensive audit is carried out by a team of professionals including scientists, conservationists and aquarium specialists.

The selection debacle that has been hounding the South African cricket team ever since their return to the country after the Cricket World Cup took a twist on Tuesday afternoon.Reports alleged that CEO, Haroon Lorgat, had sent Proteas coach Russel Domingo an SMS hours before the team took on New Zealand in the semi-fi nal, making demands on selection of the team that would play later that day.Numerous reports claimed that Lorgat had sent the message at around 01:00, allegedly telling Domingo to choose between certain players.According to EWN, Cricket South Africa took an unusual step, replying to the accusations via statement:“This is utter nonsense reporting with false allegations being made. There was no SMS, WhatsApp or BBM sent by me to the coach, and why would I want to do that when I know the team was confi rmed and already announced to the players and team management at their usual 6pm team meeting that evening?

“Our media policy is not to respond to speculative or false media reports where unnamed sources are quoted, but in this case, due to the damage being caused to the reputation of the Proteas, CSA and individual players soon after a painful exit from the World Cup, I feel it necessary to speak out and make it clear that this report is false.”He added that he wanted to place on record that at no time did he ever speak to any journalist from Beeld, Die Burger or Netwerk 24, despite being quoted in the article. “It is very sad to read such poor and false reports which I believe is no more than an attempt to discredit the Proteas and CSA.“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all South African fans for their fantastic support of our much loved Proteas team and assure fans that we will do our best to build winning teams,” concluded Lorgat.
