International Animal Week (4-10 October) is an annual event, which is used to create awareness and pay tribute to those animals whose world we share. The start of this week happens to also be World Animals Day, which was started in 1931 by a group of ecologists in Florence. 4 October is also St Francis Day of Assisi – St Francis was the Patron Saint of Animals.People are always asking what can I do to help change the world for animals. The movie Evan Almighty (2007) explains this beautifully - “One act of random kindness at a time”. This act of random kindness could be anything, from throwing rubbish in a dustbin, instead of out your car window, to giving a shelter pet a home or donating towards your animal charity. This International Animal week, make a pledge to do one act of random kindness each day for an animal in need.JSPCA’s various teams will be in Orange Farm, visiting members of the community, speaking to them, and vaccinating their pets against rabies and other diseases. They will hopefully meet their target of sterilising 50 animals.Help JSPCA continue to uplift the welfare of all animals by making a donation to the JSPCA this International Animal Week.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL WEEK?

Ever felt how infuriating it is when someone, either an individual or organisation, chooses to insult your intelligence by denying knowledge of something that could not exist without any one’s hand actively participating in its creation? Perhaps that’s a vague way to deliver the question, but I’m sure we have all experienced this. It’s beyond lying, it’s infuriating because this form of denial undermines one’s ability to look at the facts and come up to an accurate conclusion. The intention may have not been to land the plane illegally at Waterkloof, but it happened and it’s just not logical to imagine that the planes landing was unauthorised by anyone. Will the person who gave the green light please stand up.Before I come across as one-sided, I must say: just because a crime happens at a specific centre, it does not necessarily make that centre a bad centre. Just because a Glenvista High student harasses a teacher, it doesn’t make Glenvista High a bad school, and an illegally issued passport does not mean the entire Home Affairs Department is bad. All it means is that we are not there yet, and here is what my vague question seeks to address. We do not need to apply a bureaucratic approach to the solving of such issues. What we need is frankness and some responsibility. A couple of weeks ago I made reference to a JF Kennedy quote, where he advises about a dedicated effort towards problems - the time to repair the roof is while the sun shines not when we’re drenched in the waters of the impending rain. The problem I find with the current order, and unfortunately it’s best observed through government, is that there is hardly any problem solving done by implementation of proactive systems to prevent problems. What we currently call problem solving is actually just a grown up version of pin the tail. So often we either find the donkey, or that which looks like the donkey, we pin the tail and think we have solved the problem when in fact we have just created a gap for the actual problem to fester. As an example I’ll use our police ministry with their recurring donkeys. Would anyone agree with me that we have a capacity problem, or is there a problem with the deployment? What criteria are being used? These are the kinds of questions I feel will actually serve us better on the road to authentic problem solving. In the case of the Gupta plane landing, please quote me on this one - currently it seems Bruce Koloane is the donkey that tail will be pinned on. Even if it the do nkey was ultimately to become Zuma and he was recalled as President, the problem will persist (the donkeys will remain with us) if the problematic eye of the needle is not addressed - and that’s the gospel according to Nieto. Share your views on this or any of the previous week’s topics with me.

I appreciate that this is just my opinion and there are plenty more out there. Let’s have a chat, e-mail me at [email protected], alternatively tweet us @tametimes.

Kristen Martin, Miss Junior Teen South Africa 2013 is preparing for her next project - a Christmas toy run. The Sir John Adamson learner aims to collect over 3000 toys and teddies and to distribute to various government hospitals, hospices and the Bikers Toy Run the end of this year.Chris Hani Baragwaneth, South Rand, Helen Joseph, Rehema Moosa and Charlotte Maxeke hospitals will be the beneficiary government hospitals. The project will run from 14 October to 29 November and toys will be collected once a week on a Friday or on request.

Sir John Adamson and Dalmondeor Primary are already on board but all schools, businesses and individuals are welcome to join in.tame TIMES asked Martin what she ascribes as the cause of troubled youth. Martin said, “Peer pressure. You get to high school and you want to be in the ‘cool’ group so you land up doing what they want you to do. Sadly you only realise when it is too late, like when you fail or something bad happens. The youth tend to be followers instead of leaders.”If you would like to assist with Martin’s toy run, please contact Veronique on 082 734 2709.

Twenty children from Fremar Christian Centre for Help and Rehabilitation were treated to a special fun day on 21 September hosted by Panoramo Flea Market. The children were transported courtesy of Paulo Calisto and were sponsored lunch boxes from Jimmy’s Killer Fish and Chips (Comaro Crossing), and chips sticks from Chip

Stix, one of the market’s vendors, as well as an ice-cream from the market’s ice-cream vans.Panorama Flea market donated R10 toward the rides as well as waiving the entrance fee of R25 to the Fun House at Panorama. They were entertained by a hilarious clown and all enjoyed the da y.

The Santa Shoebox Project kicked off on 1 September, with the goal to collect 100 000 gifts this year for underprivileged children across the country and Namibia. This inspiring non-profit organisation has been collecting ‘Santa Shoeboxes’ for thousands of children from vulnerable social backgrounds for the past seven years. Last year the target of 100 000 shoeboxes was reached, and this year they are planning to repeat this achievement. The gifts will be dispatched to more than 1000 children’s homes, orphanages and other child care institutions across the country, in time to make many little hearts happy over the festive season. With ‘Reaching the Rural Child’ as this year’s theme, the Santa Shoebox Project offers people from all walks of life the chance to participate in a profoundly valuable and personal experience, which enriches both the lives of those doing the giving and those on the receiving end. This year the project will focus on increasing support to caregiving facilities in small towns and farming communities. The

aim this year is to take on more orphanages in all areas, and to allocate a percentage of Santa Shoeboxes collected at the large city centres to facilities in the rural areas. Join in on the spirit of the festive season early this year and register on-line at www.santashoebox.co.za. By clicking on the “Pledge a Box” button, donors may choose the name of a child or children they’d like to give their Santa Shoeboxes to. Age appropriate gift boxes then have to be filled according to the guidelines provided on the website, which include some practical necessities such as toothpaste and a toothbrush, face cloth and soap, as well as sweets, educational supplies, a toy and an item of clothing. The gift-wrapped Santa Shoeboxes need to be dropped off at central distribution points across the country between 18 October and 2 November (details and directions provided on the website).

Fun day at Panorama

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) MEC, Barbara Creecy gave a congratulatory message on 1 October the last day of a five day job fair at Wembley Stadium. The aim was to link young people with prospective work opportunities. The job fair targeted those who have been offered temporary employment and training as homework assistants and sports coaches by GDE over the past two years. Their contract officially ends next year March.MEC Creecy said, “The department responded to the President’s call to provide opportunities to unemployed youth in collaboration with the Department of Infrastructure through the Extended Public Works Programme. As these young people are now reaching the end of their contracts with the Department, we are trying to ensure they have other opportunities going forward,” the MEC explained. Prior to the job fair, participants have had two years work experience in the department as well as formal training. The GDE not only encourages them to study further but also encourages those who don’t have a matric to obtain one. Creecy used Hotstix as an example, as he completed his martic at the age of 67 years of age.

tame TIMES spoke to Lelane Johnson from Eldorado Park who is an assistant teacher at Boekenhout Primary School. “I only passed my matric with a diploma so my principal at the time told me about this programme. I am really grateful as it helped me decide that I want to study education as well as teaching me to show commitment and how to take a job seriously.” Johnson has decided to complete her Higher Certificate at Unisa and will then study a BA in Education at Unisa. To date the Department has provided basic training to 16 000 assistants and more advanced training to 3288 workers who qualified to receive bursaries and attend part time classes at FET colleges and Unisa. The ETDP SETA has been a significant partner in the delivery of this programme.

Experience gained: ready for the job market

THE AIMS OF THE JOB FAIR:

Forty different employers and training institutions exhibited. These included state-owned enterprises, FET colleges and government departments. Participants are expected to benefi t in the following ways:

The months have passed and so far there has been no response to my and my sister’s application for the over 70’s rebate on rates offered by Joburg Municipality. I queried them via e-mail on 6 September but have not had a reply other than the Auto response: “Thank you for your e-mail enquiry. Your enquiry received via e-mail has reference. Kindly note, this matter has been referred to the relevant department for attention. You will be advised of the outcome soonest.”tame TIMES sent this query to Clr Peter

reconciliation

Meeting up again with someone you haven’t seen for a long time can be truly amazing – even better would be meeting someone you thought was dead. But the Bible says there is one thing even better than that: meeting up with God. Not meeting Him in judgement or discipline, but meeting up with him knowing that He wants to meet with you more than you want to meet with Him. 2 Corinthians 5:19: “...in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them.” Reconciliation is what happens when someone takes God up on his offer. No one is naturally on good terms with God, but through Jesus Christ he is taking the first step towards reconciliation. He ‘puts himself out there’ like an anxious boy saying to a girl he fancies, “I really like you, would you like to go out with me?” The split seconds she takes to answer seem like minutes. As childish as it sounds God ‘has put Himself out there’ by telling everyone He would like to be reconciled to whoever would put their full trust in Jesus. If you trust Jesus as God says, you will experience and know reconciliation.

The chairperson of Tambotie Preparatory School Management Forum, Mrs Riette Els, former principal of the pre-primary school, as well as the current management, staff and learners, wish to congratulate Daryl Impey and his team with their marvellous achievement at the UCI Road World

Championship in Italy. We are all very proud of our South African cyclists and even more so because Daryl is from the South of Johannesburg and a former learner of our school, Tambotie. We trust their future in cycling will exceed their biggest expectations.

tambotie proud of former learner Daryl ImpeyTambotie Preparatory School writes:

Assessment of young children (1)Development during early childhood can be seen as crucial to the further development of the child into adolescence and adulthood. The sooner a child is assessed, the sooner an intervention can be implemented to assist the child in certain shortcomings. It is important to do a comprehensive developmental assessment of a child in physical, cognitive, social and emotional developmental levels, as problems in one or more of the different levels can influence another. If poor performance on one or more levels are identified and addressed, the other levels might also be positively influenced by the intervention on the levels that indicated shortcomings.

Next week more on the different types of measures. For more information please contact the centre on 082 495 8401.

It is difficult to see why the ANC is so upset about the billboards that have been erected on Gauteng highways next to e-tolling gantries. The billboards carry the message: “E-tolls. Proudly brought to you by the ANC”. This message is 100% accurate.E-tolls were conceived under the watch of an ANC Minister, supported by an ANC executive in Gauteng, passed into law by an ANC majority parliament, and signed, sealed and delivered by an ANC President. So what’s the ANC’s problem with the billboard? Is the ANC ashamed of E-tolls all of a sudden? It is reported that the ANC has complained about the billboards to the Advertising Standards Authority and the Independent Electoral Commission. We say: bring it on. We will defend our right to erect these billboards in any forum the ANC chooses. The ANC is panicking now because it knows that the public doesn’t want e-tolls. And with good reason: E-tolls will make people poorer and cost jobs. The DA stands on the side of immense public opposition to e-tolls. If I am elected Premier, I will do everything in my power to stop e-tolling in its tracks.

‘n Troue is wraggies ‘n aangename ding.

Below are some tips that could assist if you are ever in danger:-If a robber asks for your handbag- toss it away from you - he is probably more interested in your handbag than you and he will go for the handbag. Run in the other direction.-If you are ever thrown into the boot of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm through the hole and start waving. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.-Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc, and just sit doing something. Don’t do this. A predator could be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side and attack you. As soon as you get into your car, lock the doors and leave.-A few notes about getting into your car in a

car park:A.) Be aware - look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and check the back seat.B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most attackers surprise their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.C.) Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the shop, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.It is always better to be safe than sorry. -Always take the lift instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot.-If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, always run. The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times. As women, we are naturally sympathetic - be careful of this as it could lead to dangerous situations if people see you soft hreat and take advantage of it. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well-educated man, who always played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked ‘for help’ into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

Joburgers united on a Johannesburg rooftop for the Peace Starts concert in celebration of International Peace Day.Some of South Africa’s most talented musicians performed at a sold out venue at SkyRoomLive to promote the peaceful day.Peace Starts received a special message from the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon.Moon said, “International Day of Peace is a time for reflection, a day where we reiterate our belief in non-violence and call for a global ceasefire.”“This year we are highlighting education for peace. Education is vital for fostering .global citizenship and for building peaceful societies,” he added. The sold out event pleased Peace Starts founder and

WONDERboom lead singer, Cito, “I am thrilled at the incredible response we have received for this event; not only in the demand for getting tickets to attend, but people across all corners of the globe

wanting to tune in to see what South Africa is doing for the day.

It proves that what we are doing to promote the day – our primary goal – is working! “We are so humbled to be receiving official support from the United Nations as well. Knowing that they validate our efforts is worth the ongoing journey our organisation is taking in promoting this day, which I believe is the most significant one of the annual calendar.”On 21 September, everywhere around the world thousands of activities and initiatives took place to commemorate this day.The United Nations general assembly designated an International Day of Peace as a day to strengthen the ideals of peace within and among nations and people.

Peace Starts is an independent organisation that promotes the International Day of Peace (21 September) in South Africa. It is endorsed by Peace One Day, a UK-based organisation that per-suaded the United Nations to officially declare 21 September an annual Peace Day.Peace Starts stemmed from a World Peace Day concert held at a live music venue in Johannesburg, on 21 September 2008. Concep-tualised by Sabine Bittle and shared with Peace Starts founder Cito, lead singer of WONDERboom, the World Peace Concert served to raise awareness of the International Day of Peace, while encour-aging the audience to cross-culture dress as a symbol of cultural tolerance. In August 2009, Cito and a group of friends came together in order to officially create the initiative and call it Peace Starts in Your Heart, which was sparked by the brutal murder of Tracey Leigh-Frankish, a close friend of Cito’s. The group’s purpose was to raise aware-ness and promote peace and universal solidarity amongst Joburg citizens and, that year, organised a peaceful march and concert. Peace Starts in Your Heart was a great success with hundreds of participants joining in the procession.Peace Starts has managed to recruit highly skilled volunteers and in 2011 welcomed Collett Dawson, a respected publicist and profile strategist who, with her coming on board, introduced a whole new vital component to the initiative. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, Peace Starts launched “Pledge for Peace”, a yearlong awareness campaign that served as a platform for all walks of life, all over South Africa, to get involved through in-dividual pledges and shared their documented actions through the Peace Starts website and social media community. This campaign will continue into 2013-2014.For more information please visit www.peacestarts.co.za.

ToughLove South Africa started a group to support families in the Lenasia community. The meetings take place every Saturday between 10:00 and 12:00. ToughLove is a loving solution for families that are being torn apart by unacceptable behaviour, be it drugs, alcohol, substance, verbal or physical abuse.ToughLove offers really effective, practical support. They will never tell you what to do, but will assist you in providing a structure in dealing with this most complex of family problems. The longer you leave it, the deeper you are likely to sink into an issue where your loved one simply cannot extricate himself/herself.What to expect from your first meeting? The first support meeting is always the hardest. Most people are amazed and relieved to find that the group is composed of people just like themselves (5 to 8) who have been or are going through the same thing they are. No one “telling you what to do” is a welcome relief. The group understands the emotions you are experiencing, especially that it is a big commitment on your part to be there. The meetings will review members’ success stories (large or small); they may have a guest speaker, conduct a role play or discuss a topic of general relevance. You will be asked to fill in a Crisis Assessment form and bring it back with you the following week.ToughLove wishes they could tell you that your problems are now over. From their experience, you will need to give your group at least six weeks before you start seeing changes.

Mondeor resident and Rhythm City actress Fiona Nay has recently been made the brand ambassador of Sculpt Hair, a hair salon situated in Parkhurst. Besides this, Nay has been asked by Ambassadors Youth and Community Development to be part of a project where they will be going to schools to search for talent. It seems the sky is the limit for this young beauty. Her character in Rhythm City is having a lot of drama at the moment after winning the Mia tickets, but due to not being present at the draw her competitor and enemy, Sfiso, won. According to Nay, she finds portraying her character, whom is also named Fiona, exciting. When asked what her being the brand ambassador entails, she explained, “It entails social networking through Twitter, Facebook and blogging, MC’ing and hosting functions

and promotions. Being Sculpt’s hair brand ambassador and being sponsored by them is very big right now, they are a beautiful salon and their passion is exposed immediately as you step foot in their salon. I’ve worked on one of the biggest Caribbean ships in the USA and their salon is a spitting image. Alana King and owner Jana Aspeling are doing my makeover.”Sculpt Hair has been established for seven years. Jana Aspeling has had sole ownership for the last two years. At Sculpt Hair you will never find impersonal treatment. Quality is never compromised and is what they strive for. Their mission is to ensure that your hair is healthy and easy to maintain without compromising on colour and style. They keep up with the latest hair trends, expert cutting techniques and colour technology, specialising in colour correction.

Recently the Grade PR children from Marist Brothers Linmeyer went on an outing to the Montecasino Bird Gardens. They saw lots of interesting and colourful birds and learnt a lot of new things about birds.

Earlier this month, Readathon Ambassadors Hlubi Mboya, Grethe Fox, Ntsiki Mazwai and Thato Tholo gathered at READ’s head office for the Annual Reading Starz Workshops. These leaders in the entertainment industry held separate workshops to help selected learners to master their particular fields.Only 25 learners were selected from an overwhelming number of entries to a Readathon competition held at the beginning of the year. The challenges were three-pronged:Write a script that would earn a place in the Drama and Script-writing Workshop held by Grethe Fox and Hlubi Mboya.Submit a poem that would stand a chance to join Ntsiki Mazwai in her workshop, Poetry and WritingCreate a television advertisement link good enough to secure a spot in Thato Tholo’s workshop, TV Presenting and Public Speaking Workshop.A fourth workshop gave everyone a chance to learn how to run a successful book club. This was hosted by Katherine Alexander from READ Educational Trust, who shared her vast knowledge on book clubs, which includes how to combat challenges facing book clubs in disadvantaged communities.

Carel Snyman of SANEDI was this month’s guest speaker at the Green Business Platform, which was held at Thaba Ya Batswana on Tuesday 1 October. Snyman has been in the energy business since 1988 and has spearheaded many developments towards realising the

benefits of renewable energy. Carel’s address was premised on October being transport month, and key to his addressing the platform was a motivation to be more observant in as far as energy expenditure is concerned. Also as part of the address was a presentation of the relatively

untapped potential of natural energy we have at our disposal in South Africa. The potential of solar energy, for instance, is not limited

to the ability to power geysers in our homes. Attendees were introduced to the potential business opportunities linked to maintenance, infrastructure, and monitoring applications among others. “We need to rethink our cars,” said Carel as

he drew his talk towards transport month. Currently most vehicles are powered by energy from u n d e r g r o u n d , but according to Carel the current situation is not sustainable and to optimise travel we may have to look above the ground and into the sky.

Asked about the South African electric car, Carel who himself drives

an electric car, answered that in terms of the introduction of the technology, commercial vehicles were supposed to have been the starting point because the technology is still relatively expensive for the private user. The next Green Business Platform will be hosted on 5 November, and will be addressing recycling. Springboks Rugby Championship resultsEpic, no other word could describe the

events of the final match in the 2013 Rugby Championship between the Springboks and the All Blacks. Ellis Park Stadium, infused with the excitement of a 1995 World Cup Final re-match, was literally buzzing with excitement; rivers of green jerseys hustling into this SA Rugby Garden of Eden. The excitement and ’95 World Cup throwbacks were further bolstered by massive fireworks displays and a Boeing doing three booming fly-bys over the stadium. The pre-match proceedings were rounded off with anthems and a version of the Maori Haka, only reserved for opponents the All Blacks have the highest respect for.The stage was fantastically set for the intense

80 minute battle that was about to take place.Supporters were treated to one of the toughest, most physical encounters of the year. The Springboks drew first blood by converting an early penalty, but the All Blacks were first to score a try. It took little time for Habana to rake in two quick tries, breaking the record for most tries in a single Rugby Championship competition, and putting the Boks in the lead. However, the Kiwi’s weren’t dissuaded from their game plan and answered back with two tries of their own before halftime.Early in the second half the All Blacks received the first of two yellow cards, with the Boks capitalising with a try. A fourth bonus-point try was scored by captain Jean de Villiers not long after, making it seem like the Boks could pull off the victory. Another try from

the Kiwi’s, and a bonus-point of their own, unfortunately put the championship beyond the reach of the Springboks. However, it was a try scored while the All Blacks only had 14 men on the field that put the final nail in the Bok coffin.A truly epic battle between two worthy opponents unfortunately ended in dismay for the home team, but they leave happy about some great performances and achievements throughout the competition and confident that they’ve grown and improved for future clashes to end differently.

Malajika, of South Hills Boxing, is the current South African Champion in the 54kg division thanks to a focused showing at the South African Games hosted in the Free State.Leading up to the SA Games, Ricardo fought for and

won the Johannesburg title. He gained the opportunity to participate in the Gauteng Championships, where his winning streak continued. Being crowned Gauteng champion meant the 15-year-old Speed-Train was eligible to challenge for his first South African title.Ricardo fought in two bouts, which both ended prematurely by means of technical knock-outs (TKO), in the first and second rounds respectively, before beating the former South African champion on points.

A glamorous showing by Kaizer Chiefs against Polokwane City in the Telkom Knockout cup resulted in a 3 – 0 win, with the Chiefs breaking their trend of losing to smaller teams in cup games. Two identical goals by Tefo Mashamaite and one by goal poacher Knowledge Musona sealed the game for Amakhosi at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
