The Chief Veterinarian of Joburg Zoo, Dr Brett Gardener, had to make a very tough decision on 13 August. Africa’s last polar bear Wang had to be put down due to liver failure and chronic arthritis. The much loved bear, born on 21 December 1985, arrived at the Joburg Zoo in December 1986 as part of a conservation exchange programme with a zoo in Japan. In recent months, Wang was pining for his beloved partner of 27 years, GeeBee, who died on 12 January 2014 due to natural causes. So his distraught keeper Ms Agnes Maluleke ensured during the last few weeks that his days were filled with enrichment programmes and special treats, including his own Valentine’s Day celebration this year.In November 2010, Wang was diagnosed with liver ailments and various other medical conditions, but responded well to treatment. The Joburg Zoo did, however, indicate at that stage that they were concerned about his health. They resolved in 2010 not to replace their ageing polar bears, and this decision is still effective today. In tribute to Wang, the Joburg Zoo will dedicate the Zoo Trot on 14 September to the rich legacy of the last polar bear in Johannesburg and on the African continent.

Tributes can be posted on our Twitter and Facebook pages on @JoburgParksZoo or @JoburgParks respectively.

REST IN PEACE: Wang in healthier days

This is the only Global Partners Junior Programme (GPJ) in Africa. The GPJ is a global awareness program located in the Mayor’s Office in New York, which connects New York City youth to their peers around the world on the internet, targeting 2 000 students in classroom and after-school settings from Accra to Warsaw, between the ages of 9 and 13. It provides children with an extraordinary opportunity to foster global awareness, build computer literacy and develop communication skills in English.

Learners from both schools have been linked via Skype and online communication tools, with which they communicate with their peers around the globe. The two schools were identified by the City of Joburg’s Community Development Department, ensuring that there was social cohesion, as one school comes from an affluent area and the other from an informal settlement. This partnership is in line with the vision of the Gauteng MEC for Education, Mr Panyaza Lesufi. Through this programme, the students have been able to share cultural experiences and build long-distance friendships online; and now Hansel and Msenge will have the opportunity to meet their peers face to face. tame TIMES wishes the two learners and their team a successful trip. You make us proud.

At my church home group last week while we were discussing how we as a group could impact our communities my home group leader said something that made complete sense: “We need to clean the hearts of the people.”He was speaking about how his company had just moved premises to a new area full of dumped rubbish and how the company should somehow make a change in the area. He explained that, instead of cleaning the area, they needed to clean the hearts of the people who did the dumping.I think that is spot on. If your heart is filled with love and appreciation for the life you have been given - and especially for the area you stay in - you would not dump rubbish and pollute the area, but rather safeguard it and enhance its beauty.(See page 5 and SOJO’s open letter to the Mayor-pg 6).When we did the SOJO and Cotlands green walk earlier this year, we picked up the rubbish that had been dumped in the Turffontein area. I thought to myself: “What are the residents who stay here thinking?” Either they could be motivated by us and say “Wow, these people are taking time out to clean our neighbourhood, so let us join in” or “Look at these fools who are cleaning up our rubbish.” Now, the question is: how do we clean the hearts of people? I admit I do not have the answer, but I do know that even the smallest gesture that comes from the heart and shows love could be a seed to create change. But in order to create change, we need to starting spending time with people whose hearts need to be cleaned and show them love.

Basil Read’s exclusive Klipriver Business Park, situated just 20km south of Johannesburg, is steadily growing and recent interest from both local and international companies is further testimony that this area is a major new growth node for Gauteng. This prime land comprises a total of 109 saleable erven and is located on the R59 and R550 interchange, east and west of the Heidelberg off-ramp. Allocated exclusively for industrial use, it is designed to cater for warehousing, logistics and distribution nodes and is divided into four phases, with each phase situated on a quadrant of the interchange. All areas have high visibility, maximum exposure and are easily accessible from the major motorways.Phase 1 of the development comprises of 48 stands, of which 16 have already been sold; new sales on additional stands are in the process of being concluded. These stands are all fully serviced and include fibre optic communication systems as well as excellent security that allows for full access control and perimeter security. Chinese investor New Hope South Africa (Pty) Limited, which purchased 2 erven in Phase 1 that were valued at R15million mid-2013, has already commenced building both their office and warehouse facility on their site. Current owners such as Renico Construction have capitalized on the prime location, high visibility and easy accessibility and have already built and let out warehousing or industrial facilities. Interest has already been expressed in purchasing additional stands. Companies like Paramount Trailers and

PNR Transport are already enjoying their new business premises and believe that the high visibility and easy accessibility of the site have definitely contributed to their business improvements. Recent interest from international companies, with a view to taking larger portions of land on the other three phases, will add further impetus to the positioning of Klipriver Business Park as a prime property for development.Yusuf Patel, MD of Basil Read Developments, is very optimistic about this development and said, “The Klipriver Business Park node will definitely be the next growth point for Gauteng, as is evidenced from the already wide variety of local and international businesses on the site and the reputable corporate neighbours that include Heineken, BSI Steel, Crystal Pack, Kwikspace, Nampac and Everite. This excellent mix of visibility, accessibility, security, interest and sales are all signs of a growing economy. Klipriver Business Park is definitely the place to be and the space to watch over the next year.”

For more information on prime land available at the Klipriver Business Park, contact Christelle Siebert on 071 602 8676 or visit www.basilreaddevelopments.co.za.

According to Jack Bloom MPL, DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC, the Gauteng Health Department has paid R5 760 000 to 16 employees suspended with pay, some of them since June last year.Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu responded in a written reply to Bloom’s questions in the Gauteng Legislature that six employees are charged with alleged procurement irregularities, two are charged with alleged fraudulent activities, two others with alleged selling of jobs, and the rest face a variety of charges including insubordination, unacceptable behaviour, and theft of body parts.Ten of the cases date back to last year, including those of four senior employees who were suspended in June 2013. Their salaries

alone amount to R3 372 000. The largest single payment is to a Chief Specialist who was suspended in November last year. The Department claims that the delays are caused by the complexity of the disciplinary matters, some of which involve investigations by the Gauteng Audit Services and the Special Investigations Unit.Bloom said, “I am concerned that disciplinary cases take so long to conclude and that so much money is paid to employees suspended with pay. Cases should ideally be finalised within 90 days, and no case should ever drag on for longer than a year.”He added that the Department needs to build up expertise to speed up disciplinary cases while protecting the rights of employees to fair process.

The National Credit Regulator (NCR) welcomes the measures announced by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) with regard to African Bank Limited, which will bring more stability to the South African credit market. The NCR has for some time engaged African Bank due to concerns about their lending practices and their impact on consumers. NCR investigated the bank last year for reckless lending and entered into a settlement agreement in terms of which the bank paid up R20 million. The NCR expressed concern in 2011 about the sustained growth in unsecured lending in an environment in which many consumers had impaired credit records. Since the latter part of 2012, however, unsecured lending has been declining. African Bank’s recent growth in impairments and bad debts became much worse than

expected. Consumer over-indebtedness is not only caused by reckless lending and borrowing, but also by micro- and macro-economic factors that have a direct impact on the debt repayment capacity of consumers, some of which occur after the granting of credit. The NCR has been working with the SARB, and continues to work closely with them to ensure sound and fair lending practices across the full spectrum of banks providing credit. The NCR will engage the Curator of African Bank in an effort to ensure that the bank continues to serve its clients in a manner which is fair and equitable in terms of the National Credit Act.As announced by the SARB, African Bank remains open for business. Consumers should act responsibly and continue paying off their loans.

Gustavo Otero and Vida Ip, representatives of Investors Trust, a Cayman Islands based insurance company, paid a visit to The Papillon Foundation in Rosettenville on 7 August. Investors Trust has decided to support the Papillon Foundation in its efforts to improve communities in this region.Investors Trust has service offices worldwide and they specialise in medium- to long-term unit-linked investment products tailored to international investors around the world.Papillon had 20 children Yeshua Crèche, one of the day-care centres that they support, there to welcome the visitors with some vibrant African songs and a great time was

had by all.The children were given beautiful Investors Trust Cares T-shirts by Otero and Ip on behalf of Investors Trust, and enjoyed sweets and colddrinks afterwards while the guests toured the centre.“We are grateful for the opportunity to visit the Papillon Foundation and show our support in this region. We thank the foundation for the positive impact they have made in this community, and we look forward to collaborating on future efforts to improve the lives of those in the region,” said Gustavo Otero. In attendance were also several Papillon board members and invited guests from companies that support Papillon’s social outreach work such as IT-Web, Imperial Holdings, IITPSA, Bastion Graphics, Mutual and Federal, X-Lan, and the Forest Town Methodist Church.Papillon also extended their gratitude to Resthaven for transporting of the children in their bus.“It is totally unbelievable that an organisation such as The Papillon Foundation, with a small staff, can deliver such stunning results in community empowerment work. 8 508 computer graduates is a number that anyone would associate with a large college or university and the fact that these graduates are unemployed community members blows my mind,” said Mr Vassen Moodley of Santam.

Nthabiseng and Sydney Makume welcomed their second daughter into the world on 11 August, naming their 3,65 kg bundle of joy Sinenhlanhla, which means “we are lucky” in Zulu - because the Brakpan family won an all-expenses-paid-for birth at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital earlier this year in the Baby on Board competition at the Johannesburg MamaMagic Baby Expo.Proud father Sydney said that the prize had provided his family with the opportunity of having their baby in a leading private hospital, where their every need would be taken of. “It gave me great peace of mind, knowing my wife would be able to give birth without any added stresses or worries,” he said. The maternity facilities at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital comprise a 20-bed maternity ward, three delivery rooms that include two birthing baths for parents who opt for a water birth, and a dedicated caesarean section theatre. The NICU has a total of eight beds, four of which are isolation beds. The prize not only covered the cost of the entire birthing process – paid for by Netcare – but it also included the storage

of Sinehlanhla’s umbilical cord blood and tissue stem cells for up to 10 years, as well as maternal blood tests, paid for by Netcells Biosciences. Well-known brands Stokke® and Philips AVENT offered the couple a wide range of premium products such as a carrycot, car chair and pregnancy belt. Pampers sponsored a year’s supply of premium care nappies, and specialist South African retail baby store, Baby City, gave the lucky couple a gift voucher to spend at any of their stores around the country. “These prizes are truly a welcome gift for us and will help take a huge burden off our shoulders. We are very grateful to Netcare Mulbarton Hospital for paying for the full birthing process as well as to the other sponsors of the wonderful prizes which are definitely going to make an unbelievable difference to our lives and the life of our precious new daughter,” Nthabiseng said. The cherry on top for the Makumes was a romantic dinner organised for them by the hospital last Tuesday evening, the night before Nthabiseng and baby Sinenhlanhla were discharged.

With 15 years involvement in the Spar brand, Steven and Madelein Grove have the knowledge and experience to keep their customers happy. The new goal they have set for themselves is to make Mondeor Spar a destination shop where families will not only use the store at their convenience, but also make it their store of choice for their monthly grocery shopping. The Groves purchased the store three months ago and have already made a number of changes, bringing in more stock to widen their range, renovating the store to make the space more accommodating for their customers, as well as revamping the coffee shop. “We want that real supermarket feel as soon as you walk in the store,” Steven Grove said. Before their current business adventure in Mondeor, the Groves managed Sebokeng’s Super Spar for two years and, before that, they worked for two Spars in Pinetown, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The couple told tame TIMES that the reason they love the Spar brand so much is the freedom given to them as franchisees. “We

can run our own specials and have a lot of leeway to try new initiatives in our store,” they explained. One of these initiatives is the specialist cakes made by Madelein, who can turn anything you can imagine into a cake. Be sure to put your order in at the coffee shop for one of her artistic creations when you have a birthday, wedding or any other special occasion. The new store owners also have good hearts. They recently rewarded an elderly lady customer with a R1000 voucher after she picked up a piece of cheese that had fallen on the floor. Steven Grove told tame TIMES, “If I walk into a store and see a fridge open, I will close it, as I know that is costing the store money.”

A dark and dirty alley

RUBBiSH gALORE: The alley is full of rubbish.

Attempts to persuade the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to clean up the alley next to her employer’s store in Main and Lindhorst Streets have exasperated a Rosettenville store employee. She told tame TIMES, “This is a major concern for my boss because not only do thieves use the alley as a place to hide - the long grass gives them an added advantage - but the alley has now also become a place for dumping rubbish.”She has spoken to Clr Dennis Jane, who put her in contact with the correct department. Since then she has obtained several reference

numbers and has spoken to various people, including inspectors, but nothing has been done to clean up the mess so far. “The last correspondence that I received from JRA was that they were processing my request and they were waiting for a team to be assembled. I have been in contact with Catherine Maenetje from JRA,” the employee said. The carcass of a dead dog was even found in the alley, which is of great concern as it poses a danger to the health of residents.tame TIMES tried to contact Ms Maenetje, but she was unavailable. Comment was also requested from the JRA.

DEAD DOg: A dog’s carcass was even dumped in the alley.

Miss Portugal SA, Teniqua da Fonseca, a grade 11 pupil from Assumption Convent, is preparing for this year’s Casual Day Campaign. To celebrate Casual Day’s 20th birthday, Lusito Land are inspiring South Africans to dress up, not down. Go posh, not casual. The colour for the year is Dazzle Blue, a dramatic colour relating to the world of the theatre. Blue is the colour of a new pair of jeans. Top that with your blue shirt, then add a little glitter to your lips, a layer of beads and

a couple of bangles and you are ready to go. Casual Day is all about fantasy so there is no need to go overboard and spend a fortune on an outfit. Just jazz it up with a swish of fabric and that all-important jaunty swagger. So, bling is the word and most importantly… wear your sticker! Bring out the bling and dazzle for disability in 2014, just like Miss Portugal SA is going to do. Celebrate 20 years of service to persons with disabilities. Remember, remember, Friday 5th September 2014 is Casual Day.

When it comes to doing my job, I keep my ego in my handbag.

– Nigerian Minister of Finance: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Why are you not leading by example?Where are you, dear Mayor? You live in the South but the area is deteriorating daily. Have you denied your roots? Why are you not providing those that are living on council property with sufficient amenities to have their refuse removed regularly?Illegal dumping of waste caused by these residents is creating a health and safety hazard. Why are you enforcing the by-laws on business and property owners but not abiding by the same rules on Council-owned land?

Why are there not enough people employed to enforce the by-laws, such as building inspectors? Why are you reducing the value of property by allowing litter and grime to flourish, especially along our main arterials like Kliprivier Drive?Mr Mayor, we are willing to help you, but are you willing to help us?Mr Mayor we (the businesess and residents of the South) invite you to a public meeting to address these issues. Kindly let us know when we can meet.

Open letter to Mayor Clr Parks Tau

SOJO and community members write:

Just as I thought that things could not get worse, they did. The Minister of Transport is intent on squeezing the taxpayer via the e-Tolls programme, yet at the same time it squanders taxpayer’s money with no thought for the consequences. In replies to questions from the DA, the Minister’s own replies to our questions confirm that over R1 billion was spent irregularly. This astronomical number results mostly from contracts being extended without approval and procurement

procedures not being followed. The figures tell us a story: taxpayer’s money is not being respected; procedures and proper approvals are simply being ignored. The R1 078 476 847 could have been spent to pay off the Sanral R1 billion e-Toll debt that Minister Dipuo Peters admitted it is in.How can the Transport Department justify this when they continue to intimidate citizens into paying their multi-billion rand e-Tolls system?

Squanders money while squeezing taxpayer

Manny de Freitas MP, Shadow Minister of Transport, writes:

We would like to thank Mr Chris Manikam, Mr Patrick Yende and Ms Ipeleng Dube from City Parks for providing us with ten trees in order to continue beautifying Donnington Drive Park. The trees were meant to be planted on Mandela Day, but due to the volume of requests on that special day, City Parks was out of stock. Ultimately, however, they were delivered and planted in Donnington Drive as part of our phase 2. We have already completed phase 1 in Mogg Avenue and would like to urge the support of the community in finalising the second phase as this park belongs to all of us. To the above-mentioned officials, thank you for always being there for us - your commitment, dedication and support is much appreciated.

Trees for Donnington Drive ParkPaseka Matlhaku writes:

I have a beef about the response from local businesses. As much as I try to buy Southern, I am disappointed with two providers who responded to my request for their fencing products by measuring up, and then dropped the ball. If one needs a product or a service, it is surely incumbent upon the supplier to follow through, at least to the extent where a quotation is supplied for acceptance or rejection.

Poor service A resident writes:

Recently, Caleb Mutombo was surrounded by beautiful women while being treated to a delicious pizza at Little Italy in Glenanda. However the attention the 17-year-old was receiving from the women came from the heart, as the teenager had been left destitute when his brother passed away from a heart attack after his legs were amputated and his sister was then taken into foster care.Juanita Mitchell, the driving force behind the event, met the young man in Rosettenville a few years back. “We would assist with food and have him and his siblings over for weekends at our house,” Mitchell said.Mitchell was recently contacted by Caleb and told the tragic news and so she decided to raise money for him. “We arranged a pizza day for him at Little Italy. Glam and Glitz and O So Bling helped sponsor the day,” Mitchell said.Miss Southern Suburbs 2014 Irish Rangel, Out of Africa 2014 finalist Madeleine Theron van Niekerk and actress Fiona Nay were the beauties who flocked around the young man.Mitchell added that she and her husband, Brian Mitchell, are planning to host more fundraisers for Caleb to make his life just a little easier.

August is the month in which we celebrate women for their courage and resilience, but the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) knows the challenges many women face when they experience childbirth and other gynaecological complications. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the death of women from childbirth compl ica t ions continues to be a serious global health challenge. Currently, approximately 800 women die needlessly from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications every day. Severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth is a major cause of death, illness and long-term disability. However, blood transfusion has been identified as one of the nine key life-saving interventions for the management of pregnancy-related complications. Approximately 26% of donated blood that SANBS collects is used for childbirth and gynaecological cases. In honour of Women’s Month, SANBS urges people who meet the minimum requirements to help prevent maternal deaths and any other complications by donating blood.

A Soweto man has pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty and, as of 25 July, has a criminal record and a five-year suspended sentence. The JSPCA welcomes the conviction and sentence, and would like to thank the Protea Glen SAPS team, which did not waste any time in bringing the suspect to book.In February, the JSPCA reported a case of animal cruelty in Soweto to the SAPS, and Inspector Gideon Morar went to investigate. He found an emaciated Boerboel chained up without food or water, and covered in ticks.Due to the severity of the dog’s condition, Inspector Morar immediately removed him and took him to the JSPCA’s expert veterinary team for help. Unfortunately, however, despite the veterinary team’s best efforts, the dog died after three days of intensive treatment. A case of animal cruelty was then opened at the Protea Glen SAPS.“Thank you, Inspector Morar, for your dedication to your work and your love towards all animals,” Jolene Beyleveld, JSPCA public relations officer said.

The article published in City Press dated 10 August refers. The basis of the article, which alleges that City Power owes eskom to the tune of R1.08 billion is factually incorrect. The article in question is factually incorrect, disingenuous and misleading. We would like to place it on record that City Power, like any other entity, purchases electricity from Eskom which it on-sells to its customers across Johannesburg. City Power in turn pays Eskom on or before the due date which is a normal business practice. This media article misrepresented the facts and created a false perception that City Power was in arrears. The utility makes its monthly payments to Eskom on time every month. City Power views these incorrect allegations in a serious light. In its dealings with Eskom and all of its suppliers, City Power is guided by corporate governance principles and accepted business practice. We are engaging with the authorities on this matter to ensure they have the correct records. We have always enjoyed a constructive and professional relationship with Eskom and all our suppliers, and we look forward to continued meaningful relations with all our stakeholders.

City Power corrects City Press’

allegationsSicelo Xulu, Managing Director

of City Power, writes:

Last Thursday evening seven armed robbers escaped with R1,3 million Apple products from the iStore in The glen Shopping Centre, injuring a security guard by shooting him in the leg on their way out.The Glen Shopping Centre Management sent out the following media release: “The management and staff of The Glen Shopping Centre regret to confirm that an armed robbery took place at the iStore. Seven armed perpetrators, posing as customers, entered the shopping centre through entrance 9 at around 18:30 on 14 August and proceeded to the iStore. Staff were held at gunpoint while the perpetrators loaded a shopping trolley and bags with a range of Apple products,

escaping in two separate vehicles.”“Shopping centre security responded swiftly to a panic alert and upon exit, Mr Joao Mingito, a Fidelity security guard manning the relevant exit attempted to deploy spikes at the boom when the perpetrators opened fire, wounding Mr Mingito in the leg. Mr Mingito was transferred to the Union Hospital and has subsequently been released. Staff received trauma counselling on the scene. Centre Management are co-operating with the relevant authorities, who, together with Netcare 911, responded swiftly to the incident.“Cst Rebecca Bila, Moffatview SAPS spokeswoman confirmed the value of the stolen goods was R1,3 million.

The recently announced Absa Joburg City Festi-val, taking place across Joburg City from 2 to 5 October, will see an amazing array of entertainment on offer in a diversity of venues, all showcasing the vibrant en-ergy and culture of one of Africa’s largest cities. The Absa Joburg City Fes-tival is an initiative of the Joburg City Tourism Asso-ciation (JCTA), a voluntary group of businesses and organisations committed to growing the inner city’s tour-ism industry. The first Joburg City Festival took place last year. This year ten main festival venues will host some of South Af-rica’s most loved artists, from Johnny Clegg and Jack Parow to Loyiso Gola and Amanda Strydom. With an additional 50-plus fringe venues offering an incredible range of food, drink and entertainment, the four days of the festival will be a celebration of the regeneration of the city centre. On 4 October the Springboks take on New Zealand at El-lis Park Stadium. To mark the occasion, Absa will align its sponsorship of the Springboks with that of the Festival by hosting the popular Boktown at Absa Campus and sup-

porting the Fan Mile from Absa Campus to Ellis Park Stadium via Maboneng.

mances by various artists during the Festival.

September will mark Jazzy Masala’s sixth annual production as they stage Badtamasti at The Lyric at Gold Reef City on 6 and 7 September for 2 shows only.Following the fusion of gumboot, gungroo and tap accompanied by pure classical Indian music in Footprints of a Dancer in 2013, which proved to be a huge audience hit, Jazzy Masala now brings the Jozi public Badtamasti. Badtamasti- a vibrant celebration of dance

The last movie I watched at Southgate Ster-Kinekor was invigorating, and I was taken aback by their staff, who were most helpful and polite. This exciting sequel is full of punch-lines, and one does not have to watch the original Think Like a Man in order to understand the sequel, Think Like a Man Too.This romantic comedy is set in Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, “an ideal location for getting married,” where the guests are gathering to attend the wedding of Candice, played by Regina Hall. Her husband-to-be, Michael, played by Terrence Jenkins, is a man who does all he can to equal his fiancé and his mother Loretta, played by Jenifer Lewis. Loretta has the perception that her son is still a young boy. When an argument ensues between Candice and Loretta, Michael puts his foot down. The scatological Cedric (Kevin Hart) is best man (literally), going from a nearly winning streak to doing damage control. Zeke (Romany Malco) is coerced to confront his past as it catches up with him while he is with Maya (Meagan Good). Tish (Wendy McLendon) gets a makeover while with the girls. However, I was impressed by Uncle Eddie (Dennis Haysbert). In a dulcet voice he sweeps the authoritarian Loretta off her feet. Declan (Jim Paddock) seems to pull a few tricks from his sleeve to save the day. In a nutshell: the film does not refute the proposition that opposites attract. It is a movie where the soundtrack creates the milieu, with nostalgic songs such as Too Legit to Quit (MC Hammer) and a Poison remix by Bell Biv Devoe. The film is definitely worth watching. Enough said ...

Sun International’s Carnival City Casino and Entertain-ment World, in association with A Festa Portuguesa, has booked Portugal’s big-gest recording artist, Jorge Ferreira, to play at their Brakpan venue during this year’s highly anticipated A Festa Portuguesa 2014 from 23 to 28 September. South Africans, and the bet-ter part of the First World, know and love him for his early 80s breakout hit-single Papai, which, having sold in excess of 1.2 million copies, stands as the country’s fifth

best-selling song of all time.In a career that has spanned four decades, Ferreira has found fans in the United States, Canada, Bermuda, Venezuela, the United King-dom, France, the Portuguese islands of Madeira, the Azores and, of course, South Africa. He has released full-length albums, more than four mini-albums, 16 singles, 20 compilations, three live albums, 16 musical collaborations, one VHS, eight DVDs and a large number of music videos. The singing sensation has also made the following genres his own: country, rock, American pop, rockabilly, ballads, reg-gae, dance, flamenco, Latin music, American folk, fado, Christmas songs, hip-hop, kuduro, desgarrada and Portuguese folklore. In 1979 he began with the single Conjunto Mars and its accompany-ing full-length album Mars, which showcased a mix of Portuguese and American pop songs in a way that has yet to be repeated by anyone. Next up was Amar Como Jesu Amou (To Love like Jesus Loved), an album that was also released in Portugal with great suc-cess. The game-changer, though, was the release of the album Viva Fall River (Live Fall River), arguably an album that changed the face of continental pop forever. Jorge Ferreira will perform at The Big Top Arena at Carnival City Casino and Entertainment World on Friday 26 September, at 7pm, and again on Saturday 27 September, at 1pm. Tickets to see him live in concert range from R300 to R600 each, and will also allow fans entrance to A Festa Portuguesa on the day of the performance they attend.

S’manga Khumalo has achieved the second of his two ultimate career goals. The first was his historic win at last year’s Vodacom Durban July, South Africa’s richest race. The second occurred on

13 August when the 29-year-old was announced as the Champion Jockey for the 2013 / 2014 national season in South Africa. This announcement took place at the prestigious Equus Awards held at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg, known at the “Oscars” of the South African horse-racing industry.Khumalo is the first black jockey to walk away with this title, one which was cemented by his impressive 185 wins this season, which saw him outdo his closest competitor, Richard Fourie - who had 143 wins to his name - by 42 wins. Khumalo ends this season with a remarkable 1 381 races.Known affectionately as “Bling” within racing circles, he was spotted by a talent scout, who visited his school in Kwa Mashu in Durban, at age 15. While his wiry 154cm frame had caused him much teasing as a teenager, the scout recognised in him the makings of a jockey. In 2000 Khumalo joined the Durban Jockey Academy in Summerveld where he started a five-year apprenticeship - and the rest, as they say, is history. Khumalo has been racing professionally since 2006.After a short but well deserved rest, Khumalo will start the 2014/2015 national season with his heart set on more prominent race wins locally, as well as a number of international races.
