Electronic items including 125 laptops, 709 iPads and 176 cellphones which were stolen from the Kalahari.com warehouse in Meadowdale, near OR Tambo International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday morning (8 October) were found later that day around 15:00 in a house in Dickens Place, Tulisa Park.As members from the Hawks stormed on to the premises, they saw five suspects jumping over the back wall. After a heated chase, three of the foreign nationals were caught; however, the other two managed to escape.The Hawks were acting on information received which led them to the make-shift storage unit of the criminals. The members searched the house and found the above items still packed in their boxes neatly stacked to the ceiling. Three vehicles - a VW Polo, Mercedes Benz and Jetta - were found on the premises, impounded and taken to VIS Aeroton. It is believed that the three vehicles were used in the Kalahari.com robbery. The three suspects were detained at Moffatview SAPS.The Kalahari.com warehouse robbery is the second to occur in the space of a week.

Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Lesetja

Mothiba, said a team of investigators had been established to

investigate possible links between the two robberies and added that a R250 000 reward is being offered for information which could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspects who were on the run.

I recently had my obsession with reading ignited again. I had a proper nerd fest when I started reading A Hippo Love Story by Karen Paolillo on a Friday night and then spent most of the weekend with my nose in the book, totally consumed by the lifestyle of a remote bush camp in Zimbabwe as Paolillo and her husband stepped in to save the lives of a group of hippos who were about to die due to a severe drought. The book was completed midweek.I was so drawn in that I even took my dictionary out and made a list of all the words I did not know and then looked them up and wrote down the meanings. I must just add that I had great fun doing this. I am keen to gain knowledge but most of all I adore words.

I love how you can put words together and, once read, they evoke emotions of all kinds. What I find remarkable about reading is that, as you read the description of the scenery or setting, you create clear imagery in your mind. I love books that make you feel like

you are right there, a part of the drama unfolding. Believe me, in this book there is plenty of drama, not only with the severe drought and scary hippo charges - but, most of all, the seizing of the land of white Zimbabweans. There is also true emotion and reality to deal with and I think that is why I prefer true-life stories (this was a true story) to fiction; as they are a testimony of how someone conquered a battle or described their

journey to the present.The exciting question is now what book I will read next? One of my heart’s desire is to be an author. I have always dreamt of spending six months by the coast writing my books, then six back in Joburg, living the rat-race lifestyle. Maybe one day, that will come true, by the grace of God.

Residents of the South have been called on since 2011 to donate their used car seats and help less fortunate families keep their children safe in the car by the Car Seats for Kids Campaign. Over the last three years, 94.7, in partnership with Imperial, have chosen to highlight the importance of child safety during October, which is Transport Month, through the collection, refurbishment and redistribution of car seats. The drop-off point was at The Glen Shopping Centre’s Sportsman’s Warehouse entrance, where activists were on hand to collect the car seats. While tame TIMES was there, Meyersdal resident Michael Bradburry dropped off four car seats. He told tame TIMES that he first heard about the campaign on the radio last year, donated two car seats then and did so again this year. “It is a very good cause,” Bradburry said.Thousands of seats have been shared with those who need them through the campaign, and many more families will receive the gift of safety on 1 November when a Pit Stop Drive Through is held at Bright Water Commons.Niki Cronje, Group Marketing Manager at IMPERIAL said, “If we consider that approximately 250 children die a year in South Africa because they were not strapped in, it is clear that a need exists to increase education around not only strapping a child in, but also ensuring that their child is placed in the correct seat for their weight.” Cronje explained that the used car seats go to the Wheel Well to for refurbishment and are then given away to the families that need them.

Families from the South celebrated Heritage Day at the Seeff National Braai Day event which took place at Rietvlei Zoo Farm on 24 September. Entertainment included African dancers, an inflatable park, live music, kiddie’s karaoke, tractor rides, dance competitions and much more. The children were happy to see Zak the Zoo Buddy and Sammy Seeff; and, with the great weather, there were braais everywhere to celebrate Heritage Day.

Jozi@Work, which will see communities partner with the City of Johannesburg to boost the delivery of services in their neighbourhoods, has been officially launched by City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Cllr Parks Tau. The launch took place at Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado Park Ext 59 (the pilot project) after the programme was announced for the first time by the Mayor during the State of the City Address in April this year. He described it as a Developmental Service Delivery Model “designed to address poverty, inequality and unemployment in the City.”Jozi@Work will see over R1 billion of the City’s contracts put in the hands of cooperatives and other community-based enterprises for work in sectors that include Greening services, Agri-processing, ICT & digital services, as well as Energy and Construction, maintenance and repair of infrastructure.The Mayor said, “The City has changed the way it does business to create a platform for co-production that is driven and built on the principle that those who use a service are well

The first occurred at Wimpy at Columbine Square at 7:00 in the morning while the second was at Comaro Junction (Bassonia) involving a Spar employee at 9:15. At the Wimpy, the cashier watched as two men entered the store. While one of them ordered a coffee, the other asked for a job and then, after telling the cashier that he would be coming to work at Wimpy, showed her his firearm. Seven workers were ordered to the back of the restaurant and the suspects took R22 000 from the safe, a hard drive, one iPhone and six phones belonging to the workers, and fled in a silver A4 Audi (SXW 198). A case of business robbery was opened at Mondeor SAPS.The second armed robbery occurred when two employees walked out of Spar to deposit money at The Glen Shopping Centre. As

soon as they reached their vehicle, a Ford Ranger (WHL225GP) drove in front of their vehicle, blocking them. The complainant immediately threw the money-bag at them and was slapped across the face. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.tame TIMES asked Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, Mondeor SAPS spokeswoman, if extra measures have been put in place by Mondeor SAPS for the festive season, when crime generally increases. She confirmed that extra measures had been planned and were already in progress. “Unfortunately we don’t want to divulge our plans as we don’t want the criminals to have the advantage. However we are doing our best to keep the community of Mondeor Policing precinct safe. We also urge the community to be alert and report any suspicious people and vehicles to 10111 or the sector van numbers,” Cst Mnguni said.

According to Clr Peter Stewart, continuous illegal dumping on vacant land around the suburbs is becoming a nightmare for its residents as Pikitup refuses to clear rubbish from private properties, which means that refuse could be left there forever, scarring an already bruised environment.“We urge residents to be vigilant and report anybody seen dumping. It was established that 90% of illegal dumping is done by our own residents. Anybody doing alterations to their properties must hire a skip for dumping rubble and apply for a hoarding certificate from

the council. If it is found that you are hoarding building material on the pavements or building rubble without the proper hoarding way leave, you will be fined.”He also urged residents to send the authorities photographs of illegal dumpers, preferably with the number-plates of the vehicles visible, so that tracing can easily be done. “The only way to stop this disgusting habit of illegal dumping is to take ownership of our suburbs and not to tolerate anybody messing on our doorsteps," said the Councillor.

Please see below an extract from the Joburg Water by-laws which indicates that no adjustment can be processed in cases of internal leaks. Joburg Water has asked residents to pay special attention to the clauses that indicate that they cannot process adjustments even if the customer’s meters are not read for a period of 180 days. In terms of the Water Services By-laws, published in Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No 179 dated 21 May 2004 under notice number 835 as amended: Section 1 of the By-laws define a water installation as the pipes and water fittings which are situated on any premises and vested in the owner thereof, and used or intended to be used in connection with the use of water on such premises, and includes a pipe and water fitting situated outside the boundary of the premises, which either connects to the connection pipe relating to such premises, or otherwise laid with the permission of Council. Section 38 read with section 40 requires that an owner must provide and maintain his /her water installation at his /her own cost and, except where permitted in terms of these By-laws, must ensure that the installation is situated within the boundary of his / her premises. Section 45(1) states that no consumer may permit the purposeless or wasteful discharge of water from terminal water fittings or permit pipes or pipes fittings forming part of a water installation to leak. Section 45(2) further states that an owner must repair or replace any part of his or her water installation which is in such a state of disrepair that it is either causing or likely to cause a leak referred to in section 45(1). Section 34 states that a consumer is not entitled to a reduction of the amount payable in respect of water wasted or water losses in a water installation. In terms of the above due to a leak in the water installation the owner is liable to repair the leak and liable for all water lost from such leak. The owner will not be entitled to a reduction of its bill due to losses from the water installation. The owner is obliged to repair such water installation.

Further the owner is liable for the full cost of all water loss through the water installation work. With regard to the contention that had the customer received regular accounts it would have been made aware of the leak please be advised that in terms of the following section there is no obligation that the meter be read regularly. Section 8 (3) states that the Council may estimate the quantity of water services provided in respect of a period or periods within the interval between successive measurements which may not be more than 180 days apart, and may render an account to a consumer for the services so estimated, which estimate must, for the purposes of these By-laws, be regarded as an accurate measurement until the contrary is proved. 2. Section 8 (6) states that failure by the Council to comply with the period of 180 days referred to in subsection (3) will not disentitle the Council from recovering any monies due to it by a consumer. 3.Section 9A (2) states that failure by the Council to render an account does not relieve a consumer of the obligation to pay any amount due and payable. 4. Section 30 (1) states that the Council must measure the quantity of water supplied at such regular intervals as the Council may determine, but which must not exceed 180 days. 5. Section 30(9) states that failure by the Council to comply with the period of 180 days referred to in subsection (1), will not disentitle the Council from recovering any monies due to it by a consumer. 6. Section 31(5) states that nothing in these By-laws may be construed as imposing on the Council an obligation to cause any measuring device installed on any premises to be measured at the end of any fixed period, and the Council may estimate the quantity of water supplied over any period during the interval between successive measurements of the measuring device, which may not be more than 180 days apart, and render an account to a consumer for the quantity of water so estimated. 7. Section 31(13) states that failure by the Council to comply

with the period of 180 days referred to in subsections (4)(a) and (5), will not disentitle the Council from recovering any monies due to it by a consumer. Accordingly the customer is liable for the water loss.

The National Credit Regulator (NCR) has announced that it is commissioning an investigation into various credit providers regarding shortfalls arising from sales of consumers’ repossessed motor vehicles and houses by credit providers. The investigation is part of the effort by the NCR to ensure that credit providers sell consumers’ repossessed motor vehicles and houses as soon as reasonably practicable or for the best price reasonably obtainable.

Power outages due to cable theft and vandalized substations are causing havoc in the City of Johannesburg. The city’s inability to curb these criminal activities is causing severe losses that some battle to recoup, resulting in businesses struggling to survive, resulting directly or indirectly in job losses. Costs of municipal services has become a major factor in a business’s daily operations and cannot be regarded as a meagre factor in its planning operations. It is still an expense that has to be covered, even if you had the privilege of its supply or not. Unexpected outages and service cuts can cause major repercussions to your ability to produce

on time or force you to invest in major expenses to install back-up facilities which you would not have had to plan for if you had an absolutely reliable supply of services, making it especially hard for small to medium enterprises to compete with big businesses.

Not only has the lack and unexpected supply of services affected the inhabitants of the City, but the constant inability of the city’s billing department to resolve the billing queries that plague so many of its customers causes unnecessary stress and the inability of the city’s department to achieve its collection ratio to again provide the necessary financial means to keep its promises on service deliveries.

I requested an invoice for September of this year - herewith are the answers that were received after phoning the customer line:- 30/09/2014 – Spoke to Lerato who informed me that the invoices had not been printed as yet. She gave me a reference number.- 03/10/2014 – Spoke to Adele who informed me that the invoice was still not available and I should pay a provisional amount in the interim as invoices may only be available in October with two months billing. The same reference number was given.- 07/10/2014 – Spoke to Zena, took details down, and waited for 20 minutes until I was cut off - for her to download details? - 07/10/2014 – Phoned back again and spoke to Sam, who was very helpful. He suggested I try again the next week!It is little wonder that they, the City of Johannesburg, cannot balance their books because of the incompetence of their staff. Surely the first thing in any business is to send out accounts timeously for payment?My accounts have always been up to date. Should they attempt to cut off my electricity, I can assure them I will not be happy.

They have assisted several schools already during this year to provide Matric farewell dresses to girls who would not otherwise have attended their dance, due to lack of funds to afford the outfit. St Declans School for Boys Open Day - 18 October

Resilience Gymnastics Club started tumbling this May after three boys, Seth van der Merwe, Dane Gunkel and Ethan van der Merwe, joined the club and showed great talent in tumbling.The three tumblers were joined by Adrian Knoetze, who is an Artistic Gymnast as well. All boys were put in Level 3 with competitions starting in June. All four boys received top placings at all four competitions, as well as the Gauteng Inter-Provincials. Seth van der Merwe proved to be the star of the competitions, winning four out of five. Knoetze placed first in the last competition and Seth second. Ethan also won most of his competitions, with Dane also achieving excellent results.All these competitions qualified the gymnasts to qualify for the SA Games (Nationals) which are being held in Cape Town

Sgt LP Sithole from Mondeor SAPS has once again taken a criminal off the streets of Joburg.On 2 October, Godfrey Ndou from Eikenhof Informal Settlement was sentenced to 15 years behind bars by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for armed robbery and attempted murder.The accused robbed the victim of his cellphone with a beer bottle in the Eikenhof Informal Settlement in 2013, stabbing him in the process. He was arrested by Sgt LP Sithole, who was assigned to investigate the case. The Detective Branch Commander Lieutenant Colonel Haasbroek would like to commend the investigating officer for his efforts throughout the investigation.

TO DO:1. Your neighbours:Get to know your neighbours and your neighbourhood. Exchange telephone numbers with them. This way you will be able to tell if something or someone does not belong. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially when arriving or leaving home. Before entering or leaving your driveway check all around you and stay alert. If you feel unsafe, contact Moffatview Police Station on 011 405 1546 and/or your security company immediately; alternatively, drive to the nearest police station and report your suspicions – the police are there to protect the community. Form or join a Neighbourhood Watch or Resident’s Association. Join the Community Policing Forum and attend relevant security meetings with your neighbours.

2. Your domestic staff and/or gardener:Do not employ people directly off the street if you do not know them. Always request contactable references and a copy of their ID. Equip your domestic helpers and/or gardeners with panic buttons and/or whistles, if available, and make sure they know what to do and who to contact in an emergency.

3. Your perimeter:Walk around the perimeter of your property and check for weaknesses. Make sure your gate is secured and cannot be lifted off its rails. Check your gate motor and place a safety cage over your motor. Trim back any trees or bushes that may interfere with your wall and/or electric fence. Place lights around your perimeter. Ensure that your lawn is trimmed regularly, as long grass outside your property gives perpetrators the impression that the property is vacant and, more importantly, gives perpetrators a place to hide.

4. Your street name and number:Ensure that your street number is visible so that SAPS and EMS can find you when they need to. If your street name is not visible, contact your local Ward Councillor and request that the street names be repainted.

5. Your short-term insurance:Ensure that your short-term insurance policy is up to date.

6. Your car keys:Whether at home or in a public place, always have your car keys or the car remote ready in your hand as you approach your vehicle. Do not become vulnerable when you divert your attention from your surroundings to look for your car keys.

IF YOU HAVE A SECURITY COMPANY, THEN ALSO DO THE FOLLOWING:7. Your security profile:Ensure that your security profile is always up to date. Phone your security company to check your information. Ensure that your security company can get to you when you need help.

8. Your home alarm:Just like your car, your home alarm needs to be serviced at regular intervals and it is important to test it regularly. Also test all panic buttons and outdoor security systems.

9. Late arrival:If you work late hours, upon arriving home, alert your security company to be on standby, waiting for you close to your driveway or at your nearest street corner.

This 23-year-old South African man is wanted by Moffatview SAPS for a business robbery. He is described as short and slender with a scar on the right side of his mouth. He was last seen wearing a dirty black jacket and blue jeans. He has medium, uncombed black hair. The complainant, a security guard, was on duty outside the guard room when he noticed two men approaching him.

One suspect pulled a gun and ordered him to lie down. The other suspect had a crow-bar and walked towards trailers that were parked on the premises and stripped them off their wheels.The suspect walked from the scene carrying the wheels and disappeared into the darkness. Olympic Gold medallist Sizwe Lawrence Ndlovu will once again take on WonderBoom frontman Cito at this year’s tame TIMES Jozi South Half Marathon on Sunday. Last year Team Seize was victorious in the 10km race, leaving Team Showbiz in the dust. This year, anything could happen.The Jozi South Half Marathon, organized by Brotherhood

Athletic Club, Gold Reef City and tame TIMES, is in its third year and is set to be a great success, as it was in the past two years. This year Gold Reef City has chosen Bree Street Primary School to be the beneficiary. R10 from each entry for the 21km and 10km races will benefit the primary school. There are three different races: 21km, 10km and the 4km fun walk. The fun walk takes place in Gold Reef City Theme Park and is perfect for families and children. All proceeds from the fun walk will be donated to Bree Street Primary. All race entrants will receive free entry into the Theme Park on the day of the race, upon verification of race registration, plus 50% discount on Theme Park entry fees for two family members.The race starts at the Apartheid Museum parking area at Gold Reef City, winds its

way through Soweto, passing Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital

and South Gate Mall, and ends at the museum. The prize-giving will be held at Theme Park Town Square at 10:30.Last year Lucky Mohale and Rene Kalmer won the 21km race and Derocious Makhobolo and Christine Kalmer were the 10km winners. Weather permitting, fast times are expected, as the course is a flat and easy one. Watch out for the results in next week’s edition.
