While many spend Valentines Day wining and dining, consuming chocolates and gasping over large bundles of red roses, I take the time to think about what happened on this day roughly two years ago the day when four bullets took the life of Reeva Steenkamp. The first time I learned about Reeva, or saw her rather, was during my days working as a features writer for the high-end Sandton magazine clad in a stunning dress, Reeva featured in an advert for the exclusive designer clothing brand Pallu which Sandton magazine published. Some time thereafter, a media invite popped into my mailbox one day it was an invite to the Tropika Island of Treasure press junket, a South African reality TV show which Reeva took part in as a celebrity contestant for Season 5 of the show. I turned the invite down due to another event that I had to attend. Two days before the first episode of Tropika Island of Treasure was broadcasted, Reeva was killed. I was shocked; the thought of you should have gone! consumed me as I would have met her in the flesh. What was even more ironic is that I had interviewed Reevas good friend, Kim Myers, a while back at a function before the world learned that Oscar Pistorius had shot and

killed his model girlfriend. I still feel regret for not accepting that media invite. I think that many

South Africans hold a piece of Reeva in their hearts the SA model and law graduate, in my opinion, symbolises how woman abuse is so prevalent in our society. The day after Reeva died, she was due to wear black in a Black Friday protest against

the countrys disturbingly high rate of rape and violence against women. Reeva was a

victim herself. I will always remember that text message she sent Oscar stating, I am scared of

you sometimes and how you snap at me. Its etched in my mind, along with her smile and the fact that I had the chance to meet her several days before that fateful night. So instead of sipping a glass of wine over a sumptuously romantic meal, Valentines Day will always be to me a day of remembrance of Reeva as well as a day of reflecting on violence against women. RIP Reeva.

Dear Editor,The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Councillor Mpho Parks Tau must be recognised as a great comedian. I think he lies in bed at night dreaming up schemes to waste more of the taxpayers money. He has now decided to create a Community Safety Forum for the City of Johannesburg. What a foolhardy plan! There are already Community Policing Forums (CPF) established in many areas in Johannesburg. Why does he not just strengthen these bodies so that they can work more effectively? I understand that a CPF is linked to the South African Police Service but why should the City not be involved? Also, Mayor Tau has forgotten that he has a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Force (JMPD). If he really wants to bring safety and security to the public then first sort out the JMPD root out the corruption and get rid of the lazy officers who drive around in big vans all day collecting food and sitting in the shade eating their way through the day. Also, why do officers only have speed traps or stop and search close to the end of every month? The reason: so that they can reap what they have not sown. If the JMPD was truly a world-class force that did their work by enforcing the City of Johannesburgs by-laws consistently, then we would have less crime and more honest citizens. The City also needs to ensure that fire and medical emergency services are also involved with their local CPFs. This will display to the community that all parties involved, including the City, are working together for safety and security. Come, Mr Mayor, wake up and sort out your own backyard before wasting my hard earned salary.

DA PETITIONS TO IMPROVE MOFFATVIEW POLICE STATION

On Saturday 08 February the Democratic Alliance (DA) Boroang Branch in Ward 56 in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) presented a DA petition at The Glen Shopping Centre in an effort to address the plethora of problems that the Moffatview Police Station currently faces.Together with the DA Johannesburg South Constituency, the DAs petition demanded appropriate office accommodation for the police officers; lockup cell facilities for arrested suspects; adequate staffing levels to cater for the population within the precinct; appropriately equipped and trained staff, as well as the possible criminality of SAPS members to be investigated and prosecuted.DA Boroang Branch Secretary Michael Crichton said, The Moffatview Police Station is still facing severe staff shortages as they are currently unable to have two patrol vehicles per policing sector, which is a concern. Since Moffatview Police Station became independent they have not received new recruits from the academy

and the current staff have been depleted by deaths, retirements and resignations. This certainly needs to be rectified!DA Boroang Branch Deputy Chair Phillip Venter said, The Moffatview Police Station currently does not have adequate infrastructure to function properly for instance there are currently no holding cell facilities to lock up suspects. It is also concerning that the morale amongst the officers appear to be low as they are understaffed. There was also a DA information table at the event. Ward Councillor Dennis Jane said, In addition to our petition we were able to inform the public of an upcoming meeting on property rates that the CoJ is going to hold.Councillor Jane further added that he was pleased that over 560 people signed the petition as the police station problem needed to be addressed as soon as possible. Over the past several months, load shedding in

South Africa has become a major concern. Not only does load shedding impact the daily routines of residents and the operational processes of businesses, but it can

also damage electronic equipment, resulting in unfortunate insurance claims.

Because of load shedding, consumers are at a higher risk and may suffer damage to equipment brought on by power surges or loss of goods because of theft or burglary during blackouts. Therefore, consumers need to be proactive and speak to their broker or insurer to ensure that they are adequately covered for the load shedding risks affecting them.Coenraad De Jager, Executive for Personal Lines at Mutual & Federal, notes that consumers should never assume they are adequately covered as the basic cover might not include specific risks related to load shedding.We are finding that consumers are generally unaware of what their cover includes or excludes; in some instances, additional cover may be required. In the case of load shedding, for example, the battery of the alarm system plays a major role and policyholders should ensure that their alarm systems batteries are tested regularly to ensure that maximum protection is provided, says De Jager.Also, load shedding can dramatically reduce the lifespan of an alarm battery and, should the battery be older than one year, consumers should make the necessary arrangements either to replace or check the battery, he added. When consumers are underinsured for certain load shedding risks and have not taken the necessary safety precautions, it could lead to further frustration when an insurance company is unable to settle a claim.When the load shedding period ends and electricity has returned, in most cases a power surge occurs due to a boost in the electrical charge in the power lines, increasing the current flow of electricity to the wall outlet. As a result, appliances and other electronic devices in households might short-circuit or malfunction. Its therefore crucial for consumers to check the extent of their cover in respect of power surge incidents to ensure that they are adequately covered, says De Jager.De Jager advises that there are simple steps to take that may have lasting consequences with regard to load shedding risks. Simple steps such as unplugging appliances not in use to minimise the chances of damage; installing surge protectors to prevent power surge damage; keeping refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep frozen food safe from spoilage; regularly testing your alarm system; ensuring that electric fencing and gates still work during a blackout, or requesting more regular patrols and checks from your security company will all go a long way in ensuring minimum exposure to load shedding risks, he said.

Nestled in the heart of Meredale Ext. 2, the Shalom House of Refuge is a hidden gem a place of peace for broken people living among us in society. Founded and registered in August 2011, Shalom House of Refuge is a home that shelters abused women and their children.Its focal aim is to develop women into strong and independent individuals who can support their children as well as sustain a meaningful and empowered lifestyle.Broken women come here, explained Margaret Sikhulu, founder of the Shalom House of Refuge, who has dedicated her life to the project.Sitting with Sikhulu in the makeshift office at the shelter, she told me that since its inception, the home has been funded by Charles Woodhatch and Peter Howard Browne of WB Solutions, a specialised finance solutions company.In the beginning no one wanted to support us. Kindly, Charles and Peter started to fund the project and a property was offered to us for rent by businessman Mohammad Khan, explained Sikhulu. Sikhulu noted that Pick n Pay and Woolworths currently sponsor the shelter with food. We see the need to support a large amount of abused women and children. Our aim is to heal and empower these battered individuals. We want to help them with education, employment and to build their confidence. We want to motivate these ladies to be the best they can be, said Sikhulu.Several success stories have come out of the shelter. Thus far, the shelter has discharged up to 80 women who are now self-sustained and employed. One woman that came here is currently finishing her college diploma in hospitality, explained Sikhulu.

Currently, Shalom House of Refuge houses 10 women and 11 children. However, the shelter is plagued by financial problems. Coupled with this, the home is in desperate need of an upgrade and maintenance. Sorry about the pool. It looks terrible, apologised Sikhulu. Apart from the pools murky green water, the jungle gym not far from it is in very bad shape.Transport is also an issue, highlighted Sikhulu. Transport is one of our biggest bottlenecks, she added. Living opposite the shelter, Sibusiso Nkosi helps out by offering up his private vehicle to collect food as well as to transport the women and children.Shalom House of Refuge currently empowers the women with sewing skills the women at the house are making pillows. We are negotiating with a school in Kempton Park for the ladies to be skilled and qualified in sewing in order to be able to use domestic and industrial sewing machines, explained Sikhulu.One long term goal of the shelter is to be based in Jackson Park, a nearby squatter camp, where many abused women and children reside. We want to be based in Jackson Park and skill the people there through the initiation of food gardens and clay brick making, said Sikhulu.We are really intending to grow this place from strength to strength and we plan on getting our own property in the future. However, we need support so we can rehabilitate and empower more women. It will be a shame if the doors have to close when we are making such a difference in the community. This is just the beginning, said Sikhulu.

Taxi drivers are probably the best drivers on our roads. Technically, they are superb. They can park anywhere, stop anywhere, drive anywhere and they do it day in and day out, from dawn to dusk, during rush-hour, in good weather and bad.At tjaile (knock-off) time around Johannesburgs infamous Noord Street taxi rank, Quantums slide effortlessly past each other in all directions with mere centimetres to spare while their drivers pick up new passengers, drop off others and exchange greetings with each other. A few years ago, SABC news showed a taxi driver posing with a vehicle that looked somewhat the worse for wear after crossing a bridge somewhere in the North West or Limpopo. This remarkable man should have won a medal for his efforts. It was the rainy season, and, as he was driving across the bridge with a full load of 15 passengers, it gave way. Somehow, he managed to fly the vehicle to the opposite riverbank; and, incredibly, not one of his passengers was seriously hurt.More recently, the writer of this article had the privilege of driving along with taxi driver Bra Vusi (real name withheld) around Gauteng for a day. He was a much better navigator than Google Maps and superb at negotiating parking wherever and whenever it was needed; but rather impatient with the drivers failure to take advantage of absolutely every opportunity to join the fast lane. Theres a gap on your right indicate and move! became a constant refrain. It is a fact that taxi-drivers are aggressive and often intimidate other drivers. They do not always observe the rules of the road or maintain the roadworthiness of their vehicles sufficiently. According to statistics found on the Arrive Alive website, out of the 36 people who die on our roads every day, three die as a result of accidents in which taxis were involved.Clearly, a typical day in the life of a taxi-driver is a difficult one. He (there are very few women who do this job) always rises before dawn, drives all day, shares the road with motorists who hate him and has to make good time in an old and often unserviced vehicle while keeping the peace among his passengers who may all have different tastes in music.It is usually not the taxi-driver who wants to stop just anywhere, but his passengers

who insist on being dropped at their exact des t ina t ions . Also, taxi-drivers feel the stress of rush hour more than anyone else because they experience it from beginning to end. Outside these times, they are comparatively calm and serene, very often being quite generous about helping other motorists to change lanes. The greatest stress, however, felt by drivers of taxis is the need to deliver to their bosses. Every day they are required to hand over a lump sum of cash before they can take any money home.Bra Vusi shared a very meaningful story of his encounter with an irate Alberton driver. Furious because Bra Vusi had just cut in front of him and stopped his Quantum at some random point in the road, the Alberton man parked his 4X4 vehicle behind him, climbed out and hurled foul language at him. Bra Vusi kept his cool and explained his situation to the angry motorist. I drive like this, he said, because I have to hand over money to my boss every day before I can take a cent home to my family. If I do not transport enough passengers, even after driving people around for more than 12 hours, I will have nothing to take home. Bra Vusis words gave the Alberton motorist a change of heart. How much do you need? he asked. R600, answered Bra Vusi, and the now chastened motorist took out his wallet and gave him the money. Many taxi-drivers need to clean up their image including the vulgar signs some of them stick to their back windows but these much maligned members of our society provide an essential service.According to the Arrive Alive website, 65% of public transport in South Africa is provided by minibus taxis; buses deliver only 20% and trains, a minimal 15%. Also, there are roughly 20 000 taxi owners in our country and the industry employs about 200 000 of our workforce. For now at least, the taxi industry is here to stay.

Often misunderstood, the average domestic cat can in fact make a great companion animal. While he or she will boast that impervious, arrogant air about themselves, it makes perfect sense when one thinks that at a specific time in our history the cat was held in high esteem there is evidence to support that the ancestry of the majority of the worlds cats can be traced back to the felines of ancient Egyptian times when cats were considered to be demigods.Furthermore, the cat is intrinsically a hunter; so when they proudly present a smelly offering to you sometimes still alive and twitching dont scold them too harshly as after all in days gone by this would have been his or her meal ticket and way of survival. Now as much as some value their domestic cats, how do people feel about feral cats? We believe that their valuable role in society also needs to be acknowledged. Feral cats are probably the most eco-friendly rodent controllers you are likely to find.Unlike dogs, which were bred at one stage to be good ratters, cats did it all naturally and continue to do so. The Animal Anti-Cruelty League has a very effective way of managing these populations through its Trap, Neuter and Release Programme. We advise that caretakers and staff of companies and residential complexes should forge relationships with feral cats.Owners and managers need to be aware that permanent removal of feral cats will only create a vacuum for other feral cats to fill. The wisest solution is to trap and remove the feral cats and get them vaccinated and sterilised and then returned to their original location. Feral cats can also play a major role when containing rodent infestations on farms and stables. Rodents can negatively impact farmers financially through the feed they contaminate as well as the disease they can pass on to livestock. Schools are i n c r e a s i n g l y seeing the benefits of going green through energy and water saving initiatives in the face of spiralling utility costs, says Brian Wilkinson, Chief Executive Officer of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). However, there is a lot more that can be done and schools need to be educated about the benefits.With the 2015 school year now underway countrywide following the back to school rush, it is an opportune time for school leaders and governing bodies to look more seriously at the benefits of green initiatives. While the main benefit may be cost savings, there are other positive outcomes, including promoting going green to learners in their formative years, says Wilkinson.The start of the new school year is also a time when many schools face the stark reality of a lack of funding and infrastructure problems, with a larger number of learners to cater for.Wilkinson comments: Financial management has become a key responsibility for school principals, staff and governing bodies who, at times, have very few options at their disposal. Research done and reports on the state of schools in the country convey a lack of funding, poor infrastructure, inadequate equipment and the sometimes dire state of school property, buildings and playgrounds.The greening of schools offers a unique

opportunity to address these issues and is an extraordinarily

cost-effective way to enhance student

learning, reduce health and o p e r a t i o n a l costs and, u l t i m a t e l y , i n c r e a s e quality.The key motivator of

the GBCSA and the green building

initiative is the fight against global warming,

climate change and the effects that each of these are having on our planet. Learning centres should provide prime opportunities for their inhabitants not only to do well on the school front, but also to do good on the environmental front too, he added.Through its residential-focused My Green Home challenge, the GBCSA has seen positive results. The initiative saw the Ngewana family from Pinelands in Cape Town accept the challenge, with a complete green retrofit of their home. To date, electricity usage at their home has fallen by 53%; water use by 44% and waste to landfill by 81%. This translates into a direct annual saving of about R18,000. Imagine that R18,000 in the life of a poorly resourced South African school, says Wilkinson.Through encounters with those in our green network, we have found that there are green solutions that schools can implement in order to help them tackle their pressing budgetary needs. The benefits go beyond savings on utility costs at schools. Positive lessons the learners get to absorb through their exposure to green alternatives at school create an all-round win-win situation, he said. Green initiatives must be implemented at even more schools countrywide. Public schools in particular need to be empowered to be able to implement such initiatives, as many grapple with the dilemma of reducing their operating costs. Cost savings from going green can then be redirected to other important priorities such as better facilities and resources , says Wilkinson.

Residential estates are in demand for good reason the environment is secure and well maintained; residents can often access recreational and shopping facilities on site, and entry is privileged. But security at these enclosed estates can go very wrong. Quite often this is because the multi-dimensional aspects of estate security are not integrated, creating gaps in the system with no single point of authority or accountability.This is according to Leon Cahill, design specialist, enterprise security at the Jasco Group, a company that provides true end-to-end converged solutions across interlinked sectors including ICT, energy and industry. The Group delivers systems, solutions and integration across the entire value chain, offering a seamless link between areas that in the past have been separated by technology. Security at residential estates must encompass not only perimeter protection and 24-hour surveillance within the estate, but access control too. Possibly the most complex of tasks, access control systems must cater for service and maintenance contractors, staff of the residents, the entry and exit of residents themselves and of their visitors, explains Cahill.If there is a golf estate attached to the residential estate, entry and exit of golfers and their guests must be managed, as must staff of any shopping or recreational facilities on the estate, he adds. For the security systems to work, Cahill notes that processes and schedules that comply with security policy requirements need to be developed. Security staff must have clear roles and be held accountable for the tasks assigned to them, he says.The communications and other systems such as utilities that enable security systems must also be integrated into the security blueprint. Where there is potential for collusion, there needs to be a separation of

functions and service providers for example, security guards and control room staff. There also needs to be tight control, comments Cahill.At the head of this multi-faceted solution there must be a single point of authority, one that monitors and identifies system failures; is fully informed via system alerts and alarms; is constantly aware; has the technical knowledge and skills to manage and maintain systems and has the domain experience to troubleshoot and pre-empt security and other challenges specific to residential estates.Traditionally, estate managers were tasked with the appointment and coordination of service providers and with overseeing the various aspects of security. Today, due to growing complexity, a greater reliance on technology, and the increasing specialisation of specific functions, many of these functions are outsourced.In many instances this only serves to shift the problem, as the estate manager remains responsible for coordinating disparate teams to get the job done. What is needed is a single provider with multiple capabilities and an experienced team that can ensure high-level service-level agreements are met, says Cahill.As crime syndicates become increasingly sophisticated, the security industry must continually evolve and so must residential estate management. Cahill advises that it is essential that estate managers and home owners associations pick a solution provider that has the depth of experience and capability to deliver innovative, integrated solutions that address specific challenges and are sustainable, maintainable and cost effective.

Fry the red chilli peppers, cumin seeds and whole cloves in the hot oil until the cumin seeds begin to splutter.- Stir the onion paste into the mixture and cook, stirring frequently, until golden brown. Season with the ground turmeric, ground cumin and ground coriander.- Continue cooking for a few more seconds before adding the tomatoes. Cook until the

tomatoes are completely tender.- Add the drained kidney beans to the pressure cooker with enough water to cover. Pour the two cups of water additionally to the cooker. Add the sugar and salt.- Close the pressure cooker and bring to 15 pounds (psi) of pressure; cook about 40 minutes.- Lower the heat to low and cook another 10 to 15 minutes. Release the pressure and open the cooker. Stir the garam masala and ground red pepper into the bean mixture. - Lastly, garnish with chopped cilantro to serve.

The first horseriding interschools qualifier for the Gauteng Sedibeng region kicked off on 07 and 08 February at Southerns Equestrian Centre close to Walkerville.With a total of 638 entries over two days,

the regions numbers are improving. Each region hosts four qualifying shows within the first half of the year, after which the top eight riders in each individual class qualify to go through to the Gauteng Finals. At the Finals, the top riders throughout Gauteng compete for a spot in a team to go to the Nationals. At the Nationals, horses and riders travel from all over the country to compete against some of the best for individual glory. Interschool competitions allow learners to represent their school at the shows and to receive school colours. The Ekurhuleni show is due to take place on 21 and 22 February.
