Fourth Street in Houghton was packed on Friday morning 6 December, with South Africans and foreigners alike paying their respects and tributes to former president Nelson Mandela.The former statesman(95) passed away on 5 December around 20:50 in his Houghton home. It was reported that he was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.tame TIMES went to Fourth Street to capture history in the making on Friday. Monica Supra, Alberton editor said she really felt proud to be a part of it and that it was a beautiful experience. “We all came together to celebrate his life,” Supra said.The Presidency declared this past Sunday, 8 December a national day of prayer and reflection. President Jacob Zuma called upon all South Africans to gather in halls, churches, mosques, temples, synagogues and in their homes for prayer services and meditation, reflecting on the life of Madiba and his contribution to our country and the world.The main activities of the national week of mourning are as follows: The official memorial service will be held on 10

December at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. From 11 to 13 December, the remains of our beloved Madiba will lie at the seat of government, the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where he served as the first President of this young democracy. During these days, official memorial services will also be held in all provinces and regions. Children from Fremar Christian Centre for Help and Rehabilitation enjoyed a Christmas party on 30 November at Word of Life Ministries in Bellavista. They also got to share in the Sunday school’s closing.“The Santa Shoebox Project was held for the children and we had such a good response from people. The kids really enjoyed themselves and had a fabulous time. We as a community church do hope that we can do much more for the children. We hope to get the centre where the kids live painted and even a play area fitted,” Evelyn Moonsamy from Word of Life Ministries said.

Thanks to the generosity of people from all over South Africa, and many companies and residents of JHB South, the Santa Shoebox Project (SSP) broke all previous records by collecting a whopping 119 663 festive season gifts this year.The gifts are for children from vulnerable social backgrounds in more than 1000 orphanages,

children’s homes and care centres across the country, and as far as Namibia. The 2013 project ended off on a high note, when the Santa Shoebox celebrations took place at centres in each of the nine provinces. Connecting people through the joy of giving, the theme this year was ‘Reaching the Rural Child’. The focus was on increasing support to caregiving facilities in small towns and farming communities all over South Africa, and to take on board many more orphanages and homes in all areas. Forty percent of the Santa Shoeboxes collected at the larger centres in bigger cities were specifically allocated to the rural areas, where the need is particularly great. There has also been substantial growth in terms of support for many more remote satellite centres in all provinces. Other major sponsors this year included Aspire Solutions, Fairheads Trust, BulkSMS, Mpact, and KingJames, to name a few, as well as FIVESTAR PR, the agency that has provided PR services on a pro-bono basis since the project was started in 2007. This year a number of Santa Shoebox Celebrity Ambassadors, such as Jenny Morris, the Giggling Gourmet, and Miss Earth South Africa 2013 Ashanti Mbanga, put their efforts behind the project to motivate and inspire their social media followers to join up as donors.

This is a week of many firsts, so you can imagine my struggle with a topic to address. Thuli’s leaked Nkandla report, the commencement of e-toll, 16 days of activism against violence perpetrated against women and children, the Patriotic Alliance is a week old, Eskom CEO Brian Dames resigned, and lastly the news of the passing of a world icon. As this is the last time we will interact this year on this platform, I’ve decided to touch on the one issue which touches us all (or at least should) - the law. This week I’ve chosen to premise our discussion on the following quotes by Martin Luther King Jr:“One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”“An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.”In a democratic situation, the vote is power, the vote gives power and power makes laws. The one thing many voters never consider is that your vote in reality means you agree with decisions of the party or the individual you choose to delegate your power to. Delegating your power to this party or individual means you agree with their current and future decisions (assuming the voter has spent some time with the policies of the group they choose to empower, otherwise the voter is an irresponsible voter), and lastly it means you believe that the next person will not be harmed by the decisions and laws instituted by the choice you make. The law currently is under immense pressure, being challenged by resistant citizens. History has many examples of civil disobediences that have led to the will of the people forcing governments to listen. Some examples would include the demonstrations that followed Rosa Parks, standing for what she believed was unjust by refusing to stand; and the non-co-operation through civil solidarity which saw the Berlin wall brought down and Germany united. The greatest and most relevant example of falling in order to stand is the life of our late statesman Nelson Mandela, who submitted himself to the punishment which came with defying an unjust law (see insert on the life and times of Madiba). Martin Luther makes a valid point with the first quote. However, dear citizen, it does not end with the disobedience to the law. There are consequences, and those are made clear by Luther’s second quote. One who chooses civil disobedience chooses to disobey power and should be prepared to face the repercussions of their actions, whatever they may be. Ms Mashile (Meredale), a foundation phase teacher and Head of Department, came third in the category Excellence in Primary School Teaching (PST). GDE comments were that Ms

Mashile’s classroom planning and recording skills are good, that she accommodates learners with different needs, and that she possesses good leadership skills.Mr Antoniou (Mondeor), a Life Science teacher for 15 years and Head of Department was awarded Excellence in Secondary School Teaching (SST). It was said that he enjoys being in the classroom so much that teaching does not feel like work. He puts in a lot of time and effort to ensure that he is well prepared for lessons and combines in depth subject knowledge with passion for teaching. His caring and compassionate leadership is an inspiration to others.Ms Watson (Glenvista) has been a Life Science teacher for two years and was awarded in Excellence in Science. It was said that she is energetic and is an enthusiastic young teacher with an abundance of subject knowledge. She inspires and is innovative. She integrates technology into her lessons with excellent slide shows and video clips and her learners’ 2012 Grade 12 results were above the national average.

Gold reef City (GrC) donated a double cab bakkie to soJo Business and Tourism Forum on 4 December.SOJO represents eight precincts in Johannesburg South and they are responsible for urban management in the area. Their duties include cleaning the streets, reporting potholes in the roads or broken traffic lights, and ensuring that any dilapidated infrastructure is attended to. These responsibilities require a lot of travelling within the area, and SOJO staff were in dire need of reliable transport. According to SOJO CEO Nicky Vakaloudis, the previous bakkie, which was also donated by GRC, is about ten years old and was deteriorating. It was a small 1.4 litre 1995 Ford Bantam with over 300 000 kilometres on the clock. SOJO battled to drive it, especially on tough roads, and it consequently became very difficult for them to fulfil their duties in the area.

Gold Reef City’s Security Manager Thomas Pillay heard SOJO’s plight. Pillay consulted with Gold Reef City General Manager Mike Page and together they agreed to donate their 2008 GWM double cab to SOJO. With brand new tyres, the bakkie has less than 45 000km, making it practically new.Vakaloudis expressed her gratitude for the donation, “We are extremely delighted and very surprised. It’s a huge upgrade. We are the eyes and ears for the community. Especially when we drive into areas that aren’t well maintained, it is difficult to manage. Now we have a 4x4 [that] will conquer all our problems.” SOJO chairman Richard Bennet is very pleased with the continued support from Gold Reef City. SOJO will use the new bakkie mainly to transport SOJO cleaners and infrastructure management staff around the area.

At the beginning of the year Johannesburg road Agency issued a statement concerning their turnaround time. When soJo first read this, they were not sure whether to feel amazed or delighted. Being the start of a new year, they decided to receive the news on a positive note with the understanding that this department has endured many “bumpy roads” over the past decade because of collapsed internal management and inability to get the job done.“We are now at the end of the year and sadly need to report that JRA again delivered empty promises that are highly costly to our business environment and community. One such area that is suffering extreme business loss and setbacks is Rosherville Road in City

Deep. This road is one of the main inland import and export hubs which have not received proper road maintenance for the past three years,” Nicky Vakaloudis, CEO of SOJO said.According to Vakaloudis the last time potholes in this road were repaired was last year. “Unfortunately JRA have only patch-repaired the potholes, which now clearly illustrate the collapse of the road due to the pressure of the heavy trucks. However, our endless pleading falls on deaf ears. Whether we speak to senior management or to the operators of this department, nothing gets done. Our problem reporting list reflects a total of 273 problems reported for this year, of which only 99 have been repaired to date. A shocking 36% performance rate. The article reflecting their turnaround time is laughable,” Vakaloudis added.

The Cotlands collection tin initiative is almost as old as the 77-year-old organisation itself, and is a familiar site in stores across Johannesburg. These small cans of hope enable Cotlands to provide children with access to early learning resources and opportunities. Sadly, Cotlands’ tin collection project has recently been damaged by rumours that the organisation and/or the project have closed, but this is certainly not the case. Former tin reps Gavern Cradick and Ron and Dot Fennell resigned from Cotlands to assist another organisation to get their tin project off the ground, but Cotlands has replaced them with dedicated and passionate staffers who are keen to get their tins back to full strength. While a 10 cent coin may not seem like a lot to some, each donation contributes towards providing a child with the care they need to thrive in their formative years. The tin initiative is vital to the survival of the organisation as the money received goes directly to improving the lives of children who have already been exposed to difficult situations. To all store owners who have hosted and continued to host Cotlands tins, a very big thank you. Thank you to everyone who places their small change in Cotlands tins. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, in conjunction with The Star and Hospice, held the spectacular Tree of Light that was switched on at Johannesburg Zoo on 1 December. The evening was held to remember all who passed on due to chronic illnesses.Invited guests included Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Clr Mpho Parks Tau, Members of the Mayoral Committee, Section 79 Committee, CoJ officials as well as community representatives.The evening saw many families picnicking while waiting for the much anticipated Tree of Light to be switched on. The magnificent scene saw many people in awe of the beauty of the lights in the peaceful zoo.

Gauteng’s magnificent and most colourful carnival street parade took place on 7 and 8 December. Gauteng (Provincial Government) and the City of Joburg collaborated to host the 9th edition of the biggest and most flamboyant street parade of the province.This year over 21 000 participants took part in the 5.6km parade with magnificent costumes, colourful displays, enthralling dance and lively sounds. The parade started at Johannesburg Stadium and ran through Hilbrow, Braamfontein, the JHB CBD and back to the stadium. Leading the parade was a provincial float measuring over 5 meters in height. Joburg, Tshwane, Sedibeng, Merafong and Ekurhuleni were headed by mini floats. The parade included troupes from Botswana, Namibia, DRC and locally from the North West. It was a display of art, choreography, costumes, colour and sound. As part of the razzmatazz over 400 high-performance vehicles and motorbikes were part of the street parade to amplify the carnival mood throughout the city. Maile said, “This year’s Gauteng Carnival is the provincial launch pad of the celebration of 20 years of freedom and democracy. It is more than fun and the showcasing of talent, it is also a means to celebrate the cosmopolitan and rainbow nature of Gauteng. It is also about remembering and honouring Africa’s heroes who brought it freedom and democracy. We know that though a lot still needs to be achieved, we need to celebrate ourselves and the achievements made thus far,” added MaileHeld under the theme ‘Celebrating Africa’s Legacy’, the parade is aimed at recognising the role of Africa’s freedom fighters. It is also aimed at celebrating Gauteng for being the preferred home to fellow Africans who come to seek better opportunities. Over 1000 job opportunities have been created for production of the 2013 carnival, including seamstresses, sound production, welders, choreographers, designers and many more. Some of the service providers used have been trained and developed through the carnival.

Their love has grown too cold

As the working year comes to an end and this being our last edition for 2013, it is a sad reality to have to report on the loss of South Africa’s national father, Nelson Mandela. In the same breath though, it is an absolute honour and an amazing privilege to be able to devote this last edition to Tata.I was woken up from a sms by my father (who is generally technologically behind) on Thursday night at 00:30. The message read ‘Nelson passed away’. I immediately went to Twitter and read all updates, switched on the TV and listened to President Jacob Zuma announce the news. It finally became a reality, the great Baobab Tree had fallen.Friday morning’s weather was grey and gloomy and as I said that morning, “Today’s weather reflects how we feel as a country. A great man, Tata, closed his eyes and is resting in heaven.”As I look back at this year, one thing is evident: change is constant and nothing we ever do will be able to stop it. The only thing

that remains is God. God’s love and grace are forever available and I delight in that. Madiba was a man who fought for what he believed in, no matter the consequence. I pray that all South Africans will do the same and fight for what they believe in. To my fellow Christians that would be our Saviour- Jesus Christ.Even though we mourn together as a nation it is now our turn to walk in Madiba’s footsteps and make him proud. A tweet by Howard Dembovsky encapsulates it all, “If every South African man can be just one tenth of the man Nelson Mandela was, we’ll be just fine. Hamba kahle Madiba.”I thank every tame TIMES reader for sup-porting the work we do and adding their contribution. I found your article Christians eat Christians very interesting and I must say that I have never previously heard of Cliffmas Carols or Gareth Cliff; but on reading your article, which was very clear, I think I gained a correct understanding. Firstly, I believe the points you made were completely correct, fair and unbiased and I congratulate you on managing to express these views in a general manner without endeavouring to support any particular group or religious body, which obviously you cannot do being the writer of a newspaper column. I am a Christian and I think you have already expressed my views in your article. However, from a Christian point of view I would like to add to what you have already said that the Bible clearly tells us that in the end times “the love of many will grow cold and many will fall away from the faith, but he who perseveres to the end will be saved” and “when the Son of Man comes will he even find faith on earth”. This appears to apply to your statement that

Christians do not stand against this type of thing - for some their love has grown too cold to bother. We are also told that in the end times family members will betray each other to the death, so your statement about certain Christians siding with this person is perhaps the beginning of the division that is to come. I don’t want to write a book although there is much more I could say, so lastly, when the Anti-Christ comes he will try to stand in the Temple and replace God and demand that people worship him as God. Someone or something else instead of Christ. The above is merely a personal viewpoint based on my understanding of the scriptures and I am not attempting to present it as the viewpoint of the Christian Church or to start a religious debate. These days many people who claim to be Christians have no real understanding of what that term actually means and, in addition, many people are just obsessed with themselves and what they consider to be their rights and the rights of others to do just about anything they like.

A taxi and two light motor vehicles collided on the Old Vereeniging Road before Swartkoppies Road in Kibler Park on 3 December. A quantum kombi was donated to the village, and the children enjoyed a breakfast and a fun day.A widowed mother is assessed through a social worker and is incorporated into the village on the long term. Ten fully equipped homes will be given to the mothers to house eight orphaned children, which she will adopt as her own and raise to be heroes.“Children are our future and we aim to equip them with a loving and sound family environment, allowing them to grow into influential adults affecting the community and the nation. This in turn will promote team effort that will encourage the future leaders to live with one another in harmony and be able to laugh throughout the coming years as God builds our nation. They’ll be able to live life to the fullest each and every day,” said Jason Sutherland, one of the Ethemba Village directors said.Ethemba’s dream is to develop a self-sustaining village whereby the mothers have the ability to grow fresh produce for

themselves as well as a system whereby they will be able to earn a small income for themselves. They would also like to develop a Skills Development Program, where the mothers and older children are given the skills to produce marketing items for the sustainability of the village, such as jewellery, aprons, child care overalls, and prayer.The village will adopt the green thinking, applying solar energy, solar geysers, recycling rain water and wind turbines and hydroponics.

Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile has promised to make sure that excellence in school sports is properly recognised with the re-establishment of the Gauteng School Sport Awards. The official re-launch took place on 9 December at Wits University, in cooperation with the Gauteng Department of Education. The provincial school sport awards were last held in 2002. MEC Maile has since expressed his intentions to host the awards into one of the important events consistent with the annual glory of the Gauteng Sport Awards.Maile said, “In line with our renewed commitment to school sport in general, these awards will be used as a tool to promote, reward and celebrate excellence at school sport level. Some of our celebrated champion

athletes such as Olympians Chad Le Clos, Khotso Mokoena and Cameron van der Burg, footballers Simphiwe Tshabalala, Senzo Meyiwa and others, as well as Wheelchair Tennis star Lucas Sithole are among the abundant talent that started shining from school level, and an example of the future stars that the awards will seek to honour and recognise in schools.”MEC Maile introduced the categories to be awarded as well as the nomination procedure, which will include awards for both Primary and Secondary school levels.

For the 4-Bird Roast you’ll need:

• 1 x 4-Bird Roast; approximately 2,3 kg • Salt and white pepper to taste• 2 tsp. cumin; toasted and ground• 1 tsp. coriander; toasted and ground• 2 tbsp. oil

For the sauce you’ll need:• 1 tbsp. vegetable or olive oil• 2 tbsp. fresh ginger; chopped• 1 clove garlic; chopped• 200 g gooseberry jam• ½ cup sweet chilli sauce• 1 tbsp. fresh rosemary needles• 1 tbsp. white balsamic vinegar• 1 tbsp. orange zest• ½ tsp. sesame oil

Pre-heat the oven to 180 ºC. Rub the meat well with the oil, mix the seasoning and rub it into the meat. Place in the pre-heated oven and cook until golden brown for about 25 min. Turn over and cook for another 25 min. Wrap the meat in foil and cook in the foil for another 25 min. For the sauce, heat 1 tbsp. of oil in a saucepan, add the ginger and garlic. Cook stirring for 30 sec. Add the gooseberry jam, sweet chilli sauce, rosemary, balsamic vinegar, orange zest and sesame oil. Cook gently for 12 min. or until it starts to look glossy. Remove the roast from the oven and remove the foil. Cover the roast with half

the sauce and cook for a further 20 min. at 200 – 220 ºC until light golden brown. Don’t exceed the total cooking time of 40 min. per 1 kg. Remove from the oven and serve with the remaining sweet gooseberry and chilli sauce.

For the cookies:- 180g soft butter - 200g caster sugar - 2 large eggs - 2tsp ground ginger - 1/2tsp ground nutmeg - 2tsp ground cinnamon - 400g flour - 1 tsp baking powder - 1/2 tsp salt- Cookie cutters

For the icing:- 3 cups sifted icing sugar - 2 egg whites - A squeeze of lemon juice - Artificial colouring of your choice and edible gold balls to decorate.

- Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.- Add the spices, flour, baking powder

and salt and beat well.- Wrap the dough in cling wrap and refrigerate for 20 minutes.- When the dough has been chilled, roll it out on a floured surface and cut into the shapes of your choice.- Bake at 180°C for 10-15 minutes until just golden.- Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before decorating.

Beat the egg whites and icing sugar for about 3-5 minutes until it is thick and glossy. Add the lemon juice and gel the colouring (liquid will thin it out too much) and beat again. Place the mix in a small piping-/or sandwich bag (snip off a corner) and deco-rate the cookies as desired. Sprinkle with edible glitter and gold balls and allow the icing to harden.

- 140g cake flour- 1ml salt- 80g cold butter, cut into small cubes- 8ml castor sugar- 1 large egg yolk- 10ml iced water- 2.50 ml lemon juice

- 3 eggs- 60g butter, melted- 225ml brown sugar- 80ml golden syrup and 5ml vanilla essence- 125g whole pecan halves

- To make the pastry, sift the cake flour and salt together. - Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. - Add the castor sugar to the flour mixture. - Mix the egg yolk, water and lemon juice together and add the mixture to the dry ingredients to make stiff dough; knead well. - Wrap the dough in cling film and chill for

about an hour. - Roll out the pastry and line a greased 23 cm loose-bottomed pie dish.- Prick the base a few times with a fork. - Bake in a preheated 180°C oven for 10 minutes. - To make the filling, lightly beat the eggs and continue beating while adding the butter and brown sugar. - Add the golden syrup and continue to beat until the mixture is foamy and add the vanilla essence. - Arrange the nuts in the pastry case and pour the egg mixture on top. - Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes. - Allow the pie to cool until it is set. - Serve with cream or ice cream. (Serves 8).

The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour arrived in South Africa on 1 December as part of its programmed tour around the world in partnership with Federation International Football Association (FIFA) and The Coca-Cola Company. The trophy was displayed at Southgate Mall for two days and allowed football fans to experience football’s most coveted prize within their own communities. Boxing legend Jacob “Baby Jake” Matlala (51) died this past Saturday (7 December), in the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital. The Winchester Hills resident had been battling an illness since 2010. He leaves behind a wife and two children.Matlala was the shortest ever world champion, standing at just 1.47 meters. He won four flyweight titles from the World Boxing Organisation (WBO), World Boxing Union (WBU) and International Boxing Association (IBA), with a record of 53 wins in 68 fights.The boxer has been described as a great legend and a humble family man who was not only praised for his career in the ring but also for the work he did to uplift the poor.Former boxer Brian Mitchell said, “It’s shocking to think that he died a day or two after the great Nelson Mandela. It’s shocking because I was at boxing tournaments with Baby Jake Matlala and Nelson Mandela. Matlala was a legend to SA boxing.”It has been said that after the first meeting Baby Jake had with Madiba he was motivated in all the fights that followed it. He later said “All

I need is to remember that Madiba is watching me fight.”Baby Jake also said “Madiba came and drank tea in my home and I am simply invincible.”Baby Jake presented his WBU belt to Nelson Mandela after his final fight against Juan Herrera in 2002.
