Notice is hereby given that the 111th Annual General Meeting of Members of the Johannesburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(including Krugersdorp) will take place in the Board Room at the Johannesburg SPCA, 5 Benray Road, Reuven on 19 July at 10:00.

SPCA AGM - 19 July

Winter is upon us, and that means the Johannesburg SPCA are gearing up for the big freeze. On the Highveld, the nights and early mornings are particularly bitter during the long winter months. They therefore need to provide warm bedding, nourishing food and medical care for the animals under their protection. They also need to step up their sterilisation programme to ensure that the population of unwanted animals in Joburg does not increase dramatically in the spring. All donations are welcome and, for every R500 received, one cat or dog in an underprivileged area will be

sterilised, vaccinated and de-wormed.

SuCCESS STORyTwo JSCPA Outreach officers were approached by a man of limited means. His dog, Daphne, was in good condition - and it was clear that she was loved and cared for, but she needed to be sterilised. Her owner could not afford the services of a vet and did not even have transport to get to one. So the expert team transported Daphne to JSPCA’s hospital, where she was sterilised, vaccinated and de-wormed for free. A day later, she was returned to her owner with a

warm blanket, a lead and a collar with a JSPCA tag on it.The outreach team has since had a follow-up visit with Daphne and her owner. They report that she is well and happy - and enjoying her lovely warm blanket.

MAKING yOuR DONATIONAlthough JSPCA offers many critical services, they currently receive no government or

Lotto funding, and depend on donations, bequests and corporate sponsorships to help these vulnerable animals. You can use the online donations facility on www.jhbspca.co.za or make an EFT / direct deposit into the JSPCA bank account.

For more information please contact Jolene Beyleveld: [email protected] or 011 681 3600

STERILISED: Daphne is one of the many animals JSPCA has recently been able to help.

It is amazing how time flies the older you get. I remember as a child it felt as if time just stood still and I wanted it to go faster, but now it feels that at times I am left behind. Half of 2014 is done and dusted and last month, June, marked my fourth year working for tame TIMES.The one thing that I do appreciate is when I look back at the person I was then and compared her to who I am now - there has been growth. Amen to that. It scares me when a person is still exactly the same after years have passed.Last week in home group we had a discussion on prophecies and did an exercise. I had three images prophesised over me: the first was that Jesus was in His workshop, working on a chair (which was me), and He gave His undivided attention to the chair and was pleased at what was coming about. If He saw a problem He quickly fixed it up. The chair was a work in progress. Is it not so reassuring to know that even though time is flying past we are not the end result? God and Jesus are still working miracles in our lives and making us what we were purposed to be. Time may fly past me but God controls that time. The second one was Jaguar’s new ad campaign slogan: how alive are you? I ask everyone this question: how alive are you? Are you living for a passion or are you just living? The words of the ad are: “there are machines that can do things for us, machines that can make things for us, machines that can see right through us, machines that want to be us, machines that replaced us, but they are not us, but there is a machine that makes us greater” - obviously this is the Jaguar. The difference here is that not everyone can afford a Jaguar, but there is certainly something else that makes us greater. God makes us greater and His love is for free. This brings me to the question: how alive am I for Jesus? The last one was a remote control with only a play button. With time passing us, we sometimes want to rewind back to good times and fast forward past the bad times, but really we just have to stay on play mode and make the best of every day. I was told to wake up every day and expect something great to happen. With the Almighty Father in power, I am expectant.Time does fly by so quickly, so make the most of the valuable time we are blessed with. Time flies but God remains.

An alleged over voltage was reported in the Glenanda area on the evening of 21 June by a resident of Fangio Place, Glenanda.“It started at about 18:00,” she said, “when the earth leakage started tripping. We checked our DB Board to see what the prob-lem was and reset the earth leakage. At this stage we could not work out what the prob-lem was. The lights started blowing and the electricity carried on tripping. We switched everything off for fear of losing our TVs and

electrical appliances. We noticed the street lights were very bright - they were going on and off and eventually they blew,” the resi-dent explained. On the 23 June the street lights were still not working. She contacted Clr Paul Smit and he explained there was a problem at the substation and that he was inundated with telephone calls because no one could get an answer from City Power. She went on to say, “My husband is an elec-trician and he got his meter out to measure the electricity coming into the house. It measured 380 vac between live and neu-tral; the norm should be 230 vac. We conse-quently switched the main switch of the DB off.” The next day they checked everything, only to discover they had lost most of their lights, two fridges, cooking hood, microwave, garage door motors and alarm system. “This situation is unacceptable because it is out of our control. We have to claim off our insurance because we were told by our in-surance company the municipality is not in-terested in paying compensation. There are certain items, however, that we cannot claim for, like garage motors and alarm systems. This means we are now out of pocket for items that were working perfectly until this happened,” the resident stated. tame TIMES has requested comment from City Power on the matter, but have not yet received any information from them in this regard. There have been various reports of vandalism at sub-stations in the area.

It is critically important that parents do everything possible to protect their chil-dren from sustaining serious injuries in a car accident. For this reason The Glen Shopping Centre, in conjunction with Net-care and Netcare 911, held a Trauma Injury Prevention (TIP) family day on 21 June on the shopping centre’s rooftop.Other contributors which made the day pos-sible were Wheel Well, Cartrack, Masterdrive, the SAPS and the Johannesburg Metro Po-lice.Wheel Well gave away 114 car seats to par-ents in exchange for a donation. Regardless of the size of their donations, the parents could choose their preferred car-seats. Peggy Mars, founder of Wheel Well, demonstrated to each parent how their car-seat worked. Old car-seats and bicycle helmets could also be brought to be cleaned and refurbished for do-nation to others.Masterdrive displayed goggles that simulated the average person’s vision after eight beers and the public was encouraged to put them on and try to walk on selected blocks. There was also a Skid Master vehicle to teach driv-ers how to counter-steer after losing control of their vehicles. Imperial’s I Pledge program provided an opportunity for drivers to commit

to make the roads safer.Rene Grobler, who heads up the Netcare TIP programme, said the aim was to reach and educate as many parents and guardians as possible about the benefits of using car re-straints. Grobler pointed out that every year in South Africa, around 10 000 people die and another 150 000 people are injured in road accidents. “Studies show that, in the case of vehicle accidents, injuries are often pre-vented and lives are saved when adults and children are properly restrained. Fitted safety belts and child restraints have been found to absorb the energy caused by the rapid decel-eration which occurs during a crash. In addi-tion, restraints reduce the risk of ejection from the vehicle and, if fitted properly, spread the forces caused by a crash over stronger bones rather than softer internal organs,” observed Grobler. The South African National Road Traffic Act states that all reasonable steps must be taken to protect children from injury while travelling with them on the roads, and the benefits of properly restraining children are clear.According to Grobler, rearward-facing child restraints have been shown to reduce injury by as much as 76% and severe injury by 92%. Forward-facing restraints are less effec-tive but still reduce injury by 34% and severe injury by 60%.

city Power will increase its tariffs by an average of 7% from 1 July following the decision by the national electricity regulator of south africa (nersa) to approve its tariff increase application across different consumer segments.City Power had previously applied to the regulator for variable tariff increases across different segments and has now been given the green light to implement the requested tariff increases. City Power had requested a 9.3% tariff increase for time of use (TOU) for medium voltage which the regulator has granted, and the utility had also requested a 0.17% time of use tariff increase for low voltage customers which has also been approved. Medium voltage large power users (LPU) will incur an energy hike of 7.41%, while low voltage LPUs will see a 7.37% increase in the price of electricity.Conventional commercial users will pay 4.79% more for their energy usage, while commercial pre-paid customers will pay 9.40% more for their energy use.Residents who are billed using conventional means will pay 7.36% more for electricity usage, while prepaid customers will pay 7.45% extra for their electricity consumption. “City Power welcomes the decision by the regulator to approve all the tariff increase applications submitted by the utility.

City Power applied its mind fully to the submissions before it made the application and took a number of variables into consideration. These tariff increases strike the balance between raising the required capital to improve infrastructure to ensure a steady and uninterrupted supply of electricity, and the economic realities faced by hard-pressed consumers. The lower increase also significantly reduces the pressure on revenue collection – the more affordable the price of electricity is kept for our broad customer base, the less severe this challenge becomes for City Power,” said Sicelo Xulu, City Power Managing Director. The utility is currently implementing a pragmatic performance transformation plan that is geared at enabling the organisation to operate efficiently, with a specific focus on meeting customer needs. One of the areas being looked at and earmarked to benefit its broad customer base is tariff hikes and their impact.City Power is a transmitter of electricity with around 75% of its business input costs attributable to the purchase of power from Eskom. If this input cost is kept lowered to 8%, the utility will be in a position to keep the tariff increase to its customers low – most likely a figure around CPI plus 2 percent - slightly below 8%.

My response to Louis Mofokeng, an ANC member, on why I went to the paper is: as usual, when the ANC is backed into a corner, they simply always play the race card, as Mo-fokeng is trying to do. Do you understand the meaning of the word racism, Louis? Here’s an explanation for you from the Collins Pa-perback Dictionary: “hostile or oppressive be-haviour towards people because they belong to a different race”. Now, you tell me where did I bring up race in my report? Why go to the papers you ask? Well, why not? Or do you really mean why did I expose your ANC in the papers for trashing a public park over the weekend? Yes, the park was neglected prior to the elec-tion party, but does that make it right for the ANC to still turn it into a tavern, or leave their

rubbish all over the place? Why is it neglected? You can answer that as a member of the ANC which controls our city. Why don’t you explain it? As you say, no-one is above the law, so I challenge you to take the matter up with your ANC members. You seem to have missed the point of my let-ter; however, to remedy the situation it should start with leaders that should set an exam-ple of keeping a park clean and maintained. Once that happens, then the tennis courts etc. can be repaired but if they trash the park, well, is it worth fixing it if your party cannot set the pace? No, clearly not. Indeed God bless Africa, and bless the change we need in 2016 in Johannesburg.

Why not go to the paper?Clr Tyrell Meyers writes:

The topic “Dangerous overload or helpful lift” 2014 was brought to my attention by my son, who attends Mondeor High.I happen to be in the fortunate position of staying and working close to the school, and am therefore able to pick up my child after exams. Many times I have asked myself the question as per the topic. In short, the answer to both is “yes,” but what can be done and whose problem is it? What can the school, parents and/or municipality do? Many of these kids

take buses to school. Would it be that difficult to re-schedule the dedicated school buses? Who should do that and why is it not done?I feel for parents who are reliant on public transport and often do not know what happens to their kids after writing exams. Should the school not stick to normal hours during exams and keep the children safe at school?Sorry that I do not offer solutions but simply add more questions to this troublesome topic.

Dangerous overload: more questionsA parent at heart writes:

It is that time of the year again which is most rewarding for South of Johannesburg Business and Tourism Forum (SOJO) - their Christmas in July. The organisation hopes the community will be joining them in their drive to warm the hearts of less fortunate children in the South.Through their Christmas in July event, SOJO aims to provide each child with an educational toy which will undoubtedly fill the gap from birth to 5 years of age, the stage which is generally recognised as the foundation for early development and learning.

This year the event has a three-fold purpose while still keeping the focus on the children. SOJO has outsourced the provision of toys for the evening to a company called Upcycle. Their motto is “giving junk a second chance” – in other words they will be making educational toys out of waste. This concept supports the council’s educational drive to turn trash into treasure for a cleaner environment. It will also create job opportunities for those designing the products while ultimately providing a child with an educational toy. SOJO has chosen Cotlands as the beneficiary of the toys. They have opened toy libraries around the country with the purpose of reaching mothers or care-givers responsible for children from birth till school-readiness age. They feel that this early developmental stage in many children’s lives is missed because there is often no form of stimulation at such early age for them. Through their toy libraries, they will teach mother and caregivers how to educate their children through play.SOJO encourages you to purchase your educational hand-made toy on the evening. THANK YOU: Marist Brothers Linmeyer extended their gratitude to Clr Dennis Jane and Balwin Properties for erecting the speed humps by handing over a gift to them. In picture: Burton Saunders, Gary Norton and Clr Dennis Jane.

Saying thank you

One of the biggest debates I have had this week has been about the football World Cup which is currently underway in Brazil. Firstly, before I get into it, I have to drop this disclaimer: I know the topic I am about to discuss touches on one of the three themes you must avoid if you desire to keep your friends – the other two being religion and politics. That said, please hear me out.During the 2010 World Cup in the dying minutes of a quarter-final game between Uruguay and Ghana, Luis Suarez pulled off an offence so decisive it denied Ghana and Africa its first ever semi-final finish at the universe’s biggest sporting meeting. From the moment Suarez illegally stopped the goalward ball, he instantly became one of the most controversial public figures. From that time there were many debates on how FIFA should have handled the obviously malicious action, and I argue that these debates are valid, seeing that he has been involved in at least 8 separate illegal incidents – talk about an appetite for controversy. My question is: how effective are the disciplinary measures at the world’s footballing body (FIFA)? I mean, for a repeat offence, Suarez faces the same measure – he repeated the same offence, clearly he learnt nothing. Frankly, his actions show what respect he has for FIFA.My parting question is this: Suarez is a professional, he is an individual so close to the game’s rules he should never err, he knows the consequences of an illegal action and has been subjected to various disciplinary measures - do you think another four months off the pitch will teach him the lesson which the first suspension (seven league games) failed to? I look forward to hearing some of your responses, but judging by his response to the first biting incident ( “No, I do not regret what happened. Normally I always keep calm but I didn’t ... I’m a little tired. This week I had to travel a lot.”) I doubt he will learn anything. The better option would be to make a resolute statement against such malicious actions by handing him a lifetime ban. Let’s chat, let me know what you think about this or any other talking point you think will make for a good discussion. Email [email protected] or send a tweet to @NietoVoice.

ER24 paramedics were called to a motor vehicle collision on the M1 north near the Booysens off-ramp in Booysens on Tuesday 24 June. On arrival they noticed that a taxi and four other vehicles had been involved in the accident. When the ER24 paramedics investigated, they found that both a passenger and the driver of the taxi were trapped in the vehicle as a result of rear-ending a Toyota Hilux at high speed. The Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life to cut the taxi away from the two trapped patients. Once the female passenger was freed, she was carefully extricated from the vehicle by the paramedics. After further assessment, she was found to have sustained a possible fracture to her right ankle as well as injuries to her back.ER24 transported the female passenger with moderate injuries to Baragwanath Hospital for further assessment. • A house-breaking and theft suspect was convicted to six years imprisonment at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 16 June thanks to the investigation of Con- stable Malebane. The case was opened at Mondeor SAPS and occurred in Ursula Street, Mulbarton on 16 October 2013. The 48-year-old male was arrested the same day. • Three suspects, aged between 18 and 29 years, were convicted to six years im prisonment at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 20 June. A case of house-breaking and theft was opened at Mondeor SAPS and assigned to Constable Rakgoale. The incident occurred in Potgieter Street, Suideroord on 27 July 2010.

Mondeor SAPS convictionsAfter numerous investigations, Booysens SAPS has established that many of the stolen goods sold to second-hand dealers are not marked.Booysens SAPS management is therefore appealing to members of the community to mark their personal goods. All that is needed is a small mark or a sign somewhere on each item so that stolen goods are easy to identify if recovered. The SAPS have also requested that community members keep all serial numbers of personal equipment in a safe place. In the event of house-breaking, these numbers can be reported and circulated on police systems. This is especially helpful if stolen goods are taken into another area and sold there because SAPS members inspecting second-hand dealers will then be able to identify stolen items bought by them.

The members proceeded to the premises where they found two suspects

cutting up cables and putting them into the back of their van.The suspects were placed under arrest and with the assist of the City Power’s task team it was established that the cables had been stolen.Investigations are currently ongoing concerning this arrest.

A suspect was arrested on 24 June in the Booysens Reserve area for theft. After receiving a complaint of suspected sto-len goods being transported to a scrapyard, members of the Booysens Crime Control of-fice went there and waited until the vehicle approached the premises. They pulled the vehicle over and identified themselves as police officials. On searching the vehicle, they found a large amount of copper cables. The suspect was arrested for theft and taken to the Booysens SAPS. Investigations are still taking place.

Two security guards helped in the capture and arrest of two suspects for attempted murder in City Deep on 18 June.Security guard A was busy calling for backup after someone had started shooting at him while security guard B, who was patrolling at the time, noticed a vehicle dropping off a suspicious-looking man. Security guard B detained the suspicious-looking man and went to the shooting scene, where he discovered that a suspect had been shot by a security guard during the shoot-out.On being asked if he knew the person who had been shot, the detained suspect was emphatic in his denial. The security guard then took his phone to check the last person he had called and dialled the number. The wounded suspect’s phone rang, and it was established that the two suspects were together. Moffatview SAPS members were called and arrested the two suspects and took them to Moffatview SAPS for further detention. “The suspects went to City Deep with a motive of robbing,” Moffatview SAPS spokeswoman said.

The nominees for The 4th Annual South African Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards® (CCA’s) were announced on 25 June at Parker’s Comedy Club at Montecasino. When Mark Banks was announced as the recipient of the CCA’s Lifetime Achiever award, one very dramatic and totally bonkers scene was provided by Banks with him exclaiming, “I am only 55 years old!”

If you fancy seeing a panel of “grill masters” hurl comedic insults and downright abuse at him, book your tickets from the venue. The Savanna CCA ceremony takes place at The Teatro at Montecasino on 2 August. It is a hilarious variety show, comprising sketches, stand-ups, impressionists and witty one-liners delivered by South Africa’s top comedians.

No work, no future for 36% of SA youth

Almost 3 million South Africans between the ages of 18 and 24 are not in employment, education or training. One-third of our young men are jobless and almost 40% of our young women are unemployed. And the situation is becoming worse, not better. Youth unemployment - according to the official figures from Statistics South Africa - was 32,7% in 2008, but is now 36,1%.This means that over a third of South Africans between the ages of 15 and 34 have no income, no careers and very little, if any, work experience. Their lives are on hold. Unless they are fortunate enough to find the financial sponsorship to do so, they cannot marry, buy houses or study. They also cannot pay tax or save for retirement. Many manage to subsist by sharing a grandmother’s pension or a child’s social grant. As a result, South Africa has a huge and dangerous imbalance between tax-consumers and tax-payers. We have about 16 million recipients of social grants but only about 5 million payers of tax. This is not financially sustainable, especially as the

current population ages and today’s tax-payers retire from their jobs and become pensioners. The situation is also not socially sustainable, especially as the numbers of long-term unemployed youth grow. According to the latest figures released by the Statistician-General, almost half the youth in Free State are out of work and nearly two-thirds of 20- to 24-year-olds are in long-term unemployment. These are people with all the hope, energy and ambition of youth but no future. When neighbours return from work, they are still sitting on their parents’ sofas; while others drive past in cars, they are wearing holes in dusty street corners. Theirs is a twilight existence, one that makes them feel marginalized, unworthy and unwanted. The tragedy is that government has been vocal about promising jobs since 2004, raising hopes and aspirations but delivering little apart from an increase in civil service jobs and short-term Expanded Public Works Programme job opportunities that burden the tax-payer. South Africa has a serious shortage of skills but an education system that is one of the worst in the world, especially in job-friendly subjects like mathematics and science. Most of our artisans are fifty-something, but we currently produce only 3000 a year in place of the 30 000 previously produced every year under the old apprentice system. Still, government – and even some members of the opposition – promise to create jobs even though it is universally acknowledged by economists that governments are unable to increase permanent, sustainable jobs and can do no more than to create a business-friendly environment for the private sector to do so.

BLEAK FUTURE: 36% of South Africa’s youth are jobless.

When 20-year-old Riedwaan Patel matriculated in 2012 from Mondeor High School with four distinctions, he was one of their top Matriculants and his dream was to study Aeronautical Engineering. This was not to be as his application was declined by a number of universities. He then decided to do the first year of a general Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Witwatersrand, as this was the only other option left to him.Although he was pleased to pass his first year of study, his ultimate dream was still burning in his heart so he did further research on how to fulfil it. Finally, he was accepted for the course of his choice at Beihang University in China. The first semester starts in September, but Patel now has to find funds for tuition, accommodation and the living and transport money he will need while in China. “I have been doing promotional work and tutoring,” he said. “It is very difficult to obtain funding or any bursaries for international studies but this has not brought me to giving up. As much as being declined demotivates me and leaves me at a complete halt, I am in no position to allow it to get me off track since this is my dream. My parents are unable to sponsor me since the funding is a

vast amount.” The approximate amount Patel needs for his first year is R160 000.

Patel pleads with any business or community member who is the position to assist please to call him on 071 353 9554 or 011 942 4799 or e-mail [email protected].

Not giving up

DETERMINED: Riedwaan Patel’s dream is to study Aeronautical Engineering and will not allow any obstacles to deter him.

Alberton gebore.

Nkazimulu “Zuluboy” Zulu is the first holder of Extreme Fighting Championship’s (EFC) Bantamweight title and he aims to keep it for as long as possible. He is 100% confident about going up against Demarte “The Wolf” Pena in EFC 31’s main bout on Thursday. “All I want to do is knock him out. There has been a lot of smack talk and I think we are both hungry for a spectacular finish,” Zulu told tame TIMES.The 24-year-old, who resides in Bramley, trains at Kombat Lifetsyle Gym in Steeldale and is coached by Walter Wendt. “I feel like I am at home at Kombat. No matter who you are, what your background is and all of that, you are welcomed and made to feel a part of the family.”He explained that when he met Wendt, he had no ground game or MMA game at all, only stand up. He believes that under Wendt’s guidance he has bettered himself by 80%. “Coach Walter puts so much effort into my training and has faith and belief in me.”He explained that it is amazing to know that so far he has been the best fighter in his division. He has had five EFC fights: he lost via decision against Donnovan Wilken, won via KO(knock out) against Lourens Botes, won via submission against Cedric Doyle, won via decision against Craig Ninow and, of course, the fight everyone can remember is the one which won him the

Bantamweight title by TKO (technical knock out) against Charlie Weyer.Zulu’s training programme consists of Mauy Thai, boxing, wrestling and Jiu Jitsu. He comes from a karate background which all together makes his MMA game. His confidence stems from “knowing what I have put in, so I know what I am going to get out. I feel I was born for this (MMA). I enjoy spending time with my fellow fighters and trainers in the gym - even outside of the gym. This is my life; it is what I enjoy doing.”When asked where the name Zuluboy comes from, he explained, “My surname is Zulu so my friends used to call me that instead of my full name. The name gained momentum and all of a sudden everyone was calling me Zuluboy.”Zulu believes these cage names are important as they are the way by which the fans recognise fighters, and they describe what kind of fighter you are in the ring. “Hey, Zulus are well known as great warriors,” he added.Zulu believes that one song should always be used when walking out into the ring. “If you use different songs, your fans won’t recognise you.” However, this time his normal song has been re-mixed up by a DJ friend of his - so expect to be pumped up and ready to be entertained with his skill. “It’s a new era for the Zuluboy, my first title defence, so I am coming with a new song.”We all know a Zuluboy can kill a wolf.
