Well done to learners who participated in the competition and walked away with great prizes. Thanks to MacDonald’s Vosloorus for sponsoring the event. However, on a sad note, Orlando Pirates lost the CAF Champions cup against Al-Ahly at the Arab Contractors Stadium. In as much as they did not win, their effort in managing to reach the final level was applauded and we hope that they have learnt from their mistakes.Let’s meet again next week; we hope you continue to enjoy our newspaper. Cheers for now.

Kapta to raise taxi fares Charity Moyo

Charity [email protected]

Katlehong People’s Taxi Association (Kapta) is raising taxi fares by R1 to R5, depending on the distance. The new increased fares will start on 18 November. Speaking to tame TIMES, Simon Vilakazi, secretary for Kapta said, “We have been experiencing escalating fuel prices and expenditure on mechanical parts for the past two years and we did not increase the taxi fare. The pressure is beyond our control, hence we had to increase the fares. The increase is reasonable, starting from R1 to R5 depending on the distance.”The increased fares are as follows:In Katlehong’s local operation, from zone 1

to 4, the taxi will increase from R7 to R8; Hospital to Sunrise, zone 6, 7, 8 and 9, is going to be R9; Katlehong to Chris Hani will be R8; and Hospital to Spruitview, Phumula, Tsietsi and Sonwabo will increase to R9,50. The taxi fare from Hospital to Palmridge will be R9, and Hospital to Vosloorus will be R10.For more information regarding the taxi fare increases, please contact Kapta offices at 011 439 5012 or visit the offices at Natalspruit Hospital and Kgotso Street, Maphanga section, Katlehong.

Mduduzi Nkosi, Katlehong People’s Taxi Association (Kapta) patrol car driver and David Bougaard, Greater Alberton Taxi Association (GATA) member were shot and killed during a taxi war between the two associations at Greenfields recently. According to a member of GATA, a witness who requested to remain anonymous the fight was over the K146 route from Palmridge, Edenpark, Greenfields to Johannesburg which they claim it belong to them. He said some members of GATA went to barricade the road not to allow the Kapta cars to use the route. He said the Kapta members came in numbers and started shooting. He said Bougaard was shot twice and he tried to run inside his car where he collapsed and died on the scene. He added that some Kapta members involved ran away leaving their marked vehicles on the scene. Hennie Maile, public relations officer for GATA said they intend to meet with Kapta to solve the problem.

Kapta executive member, representing the office who also requested to remain anonymous said, “We don’t know the cause of the fight. GATA instructed us not to use K146 route when going to Johannesburg and they were stopping our cars at Eden Park robots. Our members used an alternative route via Klipriver and GATA members also attacked them stopping us from using the route. We feel that we are harassed and we have lost a patrol car driver.”Captain Mega Ndobe, Communications Officer for Katlehong Police Station said, “Police are still investigating the incidents and no arrests have been made. GATA and Kapta members should learn to resolve their issues amicable as no one is above the law and has a right to shot anybody. If they can’t solve their problems they should seek assistance from the relevant boards.” David Bougaard was laid to rest at Kromvlei cemetery and Mduduzi Nkosi at his home in Swaziland.

Trees are essentially for the environment to provide food, shelter and oxygen. In supporting the environment, Scaw Metals group in collaboration with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) planted 1000 fruit trees for ward 50 and 51 residents of Katlehong. The initiative was conducted at Monde Primary School in Katlehong. They also trained local community educators who will make sure that the community are fully equipped to maintain the trees and increase environmental awareness. The fruit trees were peach, apricot and apple. Ayanda Nondenga, a resident from ward 51 said, “They have taught us how to plant and

maintain fruit trees. The trees are important in our lives in that they provide us with fruit, oxygen and shelter. The fruit can also be sold as a way to earn a living.” Markus Hannemann, chief executive officer of Scaw Metals group said, “We are committed to improving the lives and social situation of the communities in which we operate in. Most of our employees reside in and around Ekurhuleni, and we believe that by making the community look better it will

install a sense of pride in them.” Jeunesse Park, founder of FTFA, said FTFA is a social enterprise that develops, promotes and facilitates greening, climate change action, food security and sustainable natural resource use and management. “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Scaw Metals group. Hopefully it will be the first of much similar collaboration. This project has been designed to improve the quality of life of the community members by providing fruit for sustenance and contributing to the development of sustainable human settlements,” said Park.

As young girls grow up their feminine instincts kick in naturally, and the fashion and beauty bug in their blood begins to bite. Women are therefore beauty and fashion icons from an early stage in their lives. Palesa Sepadi, a 21-year-old, is passionate about vintage fashion.“I love old-school fashion and it looks good on me. Vintage is stylish, quality oriented and the material is cotton. The vintage clothes that l have, I inherited from my grandmother,” she said. Sepadi said vintage clothes are strong and the colours don’t easily fade. She said the vintage originals are not easily obtainable at the shops, as those that are generally sold are imitations of a polyester material. She said she is not a fan of colour blocking and she likes matching colours and wearing blouses and vintage chinos. Sepadi said women should wear clothes that make them feel comfortable and that

suit their body structure. “I suggest that plus-sized women should avoid wearing miniskirts, shorts and leggings, because it does not do justice to their body shapes. They should wear long blouses and dresses. Slender women can wear those things because it suits their bodies,” she said. Sepadi added that people should refrain from saying women are wearing miniskirts to attract the opposite sex. She said they wear them because they like them and its part of fashion.

Her advice to the youth, “They should chase their goals and not allow anyone

to hold them back. They should be goal-getters and know nothing is

impossible.” In the professional world, she is inspired by her sister who is a

civil engineer. Sepadi is currently studying for a human resources

diploma at Ekurhuleni West college Kathorus campus. Her dream is to become a human resource manager. Sepadi’s favourite food is burgers and she enjoys going out and

socialising with friends. Palesa Sepadi loves vintage fashion.

Sifiso Khoza does not buy a car with the sole purpose of getting from point A to B. He makes sure that the car is a reflection of his personality and profession. Khoza’s motto regarding his car is that appearance is everything.

What type of a car do you drive?Yellow Ford Focus ST3, 2013 model. What made you choose this particular car?I am an attention seeker, so it blends with me. It is an extension of my personality. The

colour and the speed attracts attention. I am an accountant and need to lure clients for my business. Is this your first car?No, it is my fifth car. Every year I buy a new car. Last year I bought a Mazda 3 MPS 2.3, 2009 model. It also commands respect because it is powerful.Do you have any traffic fines? Yes I do, for exceeding the speed limit by travelling at

80km/h in a 60km zone. How do you ensure to avoid

traffic fines? I no longer drive all over the place. I mainly drive around Kathorus, so chances of getting fines are minimal. What advice can you give motorists? Be patient on the roads. If you are late, there is nothing you can do about it. Drinking and driving is also a cause of many accidents and people should refrain from it. In addition, driving and using the cell phone is also dangerous. It is wise to invest in a Bluetooth device. To those who travel with babies, invest in car seats.

The Keketso Primary School is the new Joe Slovo Basketball Cup champions in the u/14 category for both males and females. This Katlehong-based school demonstrated agility and commitment while sailing onto the final.
