SEEPING SEWAGE CESSPOOLConcerned Johannesburg South resident Hilary Weed is fed up with sewage water seeping into her place of residence. In an unresolved matter that has been going on for nine years, sewage water is flooding the back of the Rockridgeview complex on Soutpansberg Drive in Oakdene. The residential property is located on a koppie

with a steep gradient rising behind it, so the sewage water seems to be coming from the top of the koppie, as it is running down the back of the complex. For several years, Weed has been trying to get the sewage water problem curbed via all possible avenues; however, the Council has failed to fix it. “This has been going on for years and I am being shoved from pillar to post and no one wants to sort it out,” she says. Weed told tame TIMES that several teams from the municipality have come to the complex to inspect the water. “They are quick to arrive, but leave even sooner. They simply won’t address the problem,” urges Weed. Some teams from the municipality have stated that it’s merely spring water. “The water was

recently tested and the results showed that there is a high volume of E. coli bacteria in the water – this can then only mean that there has to be a leaking sewer connection somewhere on the property,” explains Weed, who is also the current Chairman of the Rockridgeview Body Corporate. She adds that the complex’s sewage pipes run out at the front of the property. “I highly suspect that the flooding sewage water is running

from the United Cerebral Palsy Children’s Home situated above the complex at the top of the koppie,” says Weed. “The water is on municipal property – as far as I know the line stops where the rocks start,” she says. “Really, when does this become my mess and not the municipality’s? Can they not run a camera from the top and see if there is a crack? Maybe the pipe they ‘fixed’ hasn’t even been fixed or not fixed properly. It is not acceptable!” she adds. Amidst the mess, Weed would like to thank Andrew Kruger from the City of Johannesburg as well as DA Councillor of Ward 56 Dennis Jane for their efforts in assisting in the matter. tame TIMES will be continue to follow this story as new developments unfold.

Waterstone College will again be hosting their super exciting annual Sports and Family Festival over the weekend of 17 to 19 April. The festival promises to host an exciting array of school sport with over 1000 athletes participating in netball, soccer and hockey. Visiting schools including Greys College in Bloemfontein as well as Parktown Boys and Jeppe Boys to mention just a few, will be fighting to be crowned champions of the festival. Other activities include live performances by well known bands; a craft market, an enclosed play area and a secure Kiddies Carnival for the children. Waterstone College’s annual Open Day also takes place on Saturday 7 March from 09:00 to 12:00.

The world’s biggest boy band, One Direction, have announced, with promoter Big Concerts, that additional seated tickets have been released for the Johannesburg leg of their On The Road Again 2015 Tour taking place on Saturday 28 March and Sunday 29 March at FNB Stadium. Due to the record time in which the South African tour dates sold out last year it's expected that these extra tickets to sell quickly and fans are urged to get them now to avoid disappointment. The Miss Earth SA Women’s Leadership and Empowerment Programme is about the green and glamour and the impact young ladies are able to make in their communities and schools around South Africa. 8 April is the closing date for applications just before the national castings begin. Starting in the Free State on 11 – 12 April, national castings will then move to Johannesburg on 18 – 19 April. The Earth team then moves to the Western Cape on 24 – 25 April and then lastly in KwaZulu-Natal over 1 – 2 May. These castings are interviews and workshop sessions where each applicant is exposed to issues of the environment and ways in which they can contribute and be involved if they proceed to the next round. A project day is also part of these castings where applicants will be able to engage with the community and make a direct impact. On Thursday 12 February the Orlando Children’s Home received a donation of 4046 items of stationery and uniforms in order to assist its children to go back to school with dignity and take their futures into their own hands. The handover followed the Back to School Swop Shop hosted by Southgate Mall from 16 January to 1 February where shoppers could donate new or used uniforms, backpacks, books and other stationery to assist the learners who could not afford the necessary items. “The love that you have shown makes us truly and honestly delighted; thank you for thinking of Orlando Children’s Home and for each and every person who has been part of this,” says Mirriam Mazibuko, Director of the Orlando Children’s Home. “This drive

After a thrilling final against King Edward VII School (KES), Waterstone College became the youngest school to win the Johnny Waite Shield. The youthful team defeated St Stithians in the semi-finals and Trinityhouse in the quarters, before taking on favourites KES in the final which took place on 18 February. The team from the South batted first and struggled to reach 97/9 in their 20 overs against some tight and accurate bowling. Star batsman Codi Yusuf, who scored 63 off just 33 balls in the semi-final, was unable to do the same here, but a late partnership of 42 between Kyle McClean (28) and Jarod

After an aggressive and positive start, the KES batsmen were strangled in the middle overs by spin twins Keagan Malan (4-3-10) and Jarryd van Eeden (4-2-10), with Yusuf taking the final wicket as KES fell 20 runs short. The Shield completed a hat-trick of recent titles for Waterstone, following victories in the 50-over Johannesburg Schools Cricket League A Section in both the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons.

ENTRANCE ACHIEVEDThe South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) has raised concerns over South African President Jacob Zuma’s announcement during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday 12 February 2015 regarding restrictions on foreign land ownership.During President Zuma’s SONA to a joint sitting of Parliament, he stated that land ownership by foreigners will be prohibited. The President’s statement raises concern about the possible impact on foreign land ownership of property companies, game farms as well as foreign investments in hotels in South Africa. “Foreigners will not be allowed to own land in South Africa,” said President Zuma. He added that foreigners would instead be eligible for long-term leases. “In this regard, the Regulation of Land Holdings Bill will be submitted to Parliament this year,” he noted.President Zuma said more than 36,000 land claims had been lodged nationally, with a cut-off date of 2019. “We are also exploring the 50/50 policy framework, which proposes relative rights for people who live and work on farms,” commented the President, “50 farming enterprises will be identified as a pilot project.”In light of South Africa’s coastline characterised by high-value properties owned by foreigners, the ANC’s land reform proposals will have a significant effect on the property industry – currently an estimated 7% of land in South Africa is owned by foreigners.The ANC’s proposed reforms regarding land ownership is a great concern, believes SAPOA. The ANC Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe said last month that there should be “a ceiling on land ownership.”Mantashe said that if legislation were

passed, “its application retrospectively is an issue which will be tested constitutionally. The government must pass the law and test it constitutionally. It must comply with constitutional requirement.”“The ANC has committed that land will be returned to our people and the government must move with the necessary speed to put legislation in place to effect this,” said Mantashe.“The implementation of such a policy would reduce foreign investor confidence in South Africa, affecting the economy as a whole,” highlights Neil Gopal, Chief Executive Officer of SAPOA.“The issue of land reform proposals in South Africa is nothing new,” he says. “As the issue escalates, it has the potential to hamper investor confidence in the country and curb foreign direct investment flows. Foreign investment in property boasts benefits for the commercial property industry, and with such proposals put forward, the industry falls prey to negative knock-on effects,” adds Gopal.SAPOA feels that the change in policy is not justified. “South Africa’s property market is best served by a policy framework which offers investors certainty of land tenure, the promotion of domestic and foreign investment and which supports the allocation of land to its highest and best use on a sustainable basis,” explains Gopal.“While we support initiatives to redress the injustices of the past in a balanced manner, we don’t believe such land reforms will be positive as the policy is discriminatory and will most likely impede foreign direct investment and job creation,” adds Gopal.Adding to the existing concerns regarding land ownership, SAPOA is simultaneously concerned about the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA) and how the implementation thereof will function alongside the current proposed land reforms.SAPOA is eagerly lobbying for the implementation of Section 60 of SPLUMA which will solve the backlog of property development projects that have been halted. More than R12-billion in property projects nationally across the board are being held up due to the holdup of certain provisions of Section 60 of SPLUMA. “I don’t believe that the Deeds Registries are in any position to provide reliable or accurate information on the actual extent of foreign land ownership in South Africa. Until we know this, one cannot implement policy changes,” says Gopal.“We would like to engage with government with the view of jointly finding solutions to this matter,” concludes Gopal.

Professional boxer and personal trainer Paul “The Natural” Kamanga has been labelled a young boxing legend – the up-and-coming super lightweight was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, raised in the South of Johannesburg in Linmeyer and schooled at The Hill High School. Sponsored by Studio 88, Kamanga is being trained by former professional fi ghter Anton “Irish Terrier” Gilmore, who honed Kamanga from being a street fi ghter to an all-round boxing pro. At the tender age of 21, Kamanga has become a jabbing force to be reckoned with, boasting several boxing achievements under his belt. He is a champion of the World Boxing Association Pan African junior welterweight belt title. His next big fi ght will take place in mid-April.

The second consecutive tame TIMES Alberton Sevens Rugby Tournament took place on 21 and 22 February at the A Square Forklift Aberton Rugby Club. In the 105th year of the Alberton Rugby Club’s existence, the Golden Lions sees the tournament as an excellent opportunity to showcase their club talents and enjoy camaraderie. According to the Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Mondli Gungubele, when you play sport, you are assisting South Africa in its campaign to promote healthy lifestyles and ultimately healthy communities. “At the end of the day, sport must be the winner,’’ the Mayor said in his message to the teams.The tournament was a resounding success, despite

the unpleasant weather on Saturday. The winners of both the junior and senior divisions of the tournament were the University of Johannesburg (UJ) teams, who showed real heart battling it out on the rugby field all weekend. The UJ teams also brought the best players of the tournament. Christopher Schimper was the Junior Player of the Tournament, with Zane Janse Van Rensburg walking away with the senior title. tame TIMES COO, Karin Bignaut, also presented a medal and trophy to Richard Schultz, the referee of the tournament.Congratulations to all the teams that participated. It was an eventful weekend and at the end, sport was definitely the winner.
